Transaction of any business for which proper notice had been given under the Rules of the Club – Motion for a Special Resolution

Alan Butorac advised the meeting that notice had been provided to members within the statutory timeframe (21 days) of four proposed special resolutions to amend the Constitution of the Canberra Rowing Club.

Proposed Special Resolution 1—removal of sub-rule 4.6

That the Canberra Rowing Club Constitution be amended to remove sub-rule 4.6 (relating to membership of coxswains) so that the corresponding rule can be reflected in a by-law of the Club rather than in the Club Constitution, and that corresponding amendments be made to rule 4 for consistent numbering.

General discussion on Proposed Special Resolution ensued, with members expressing differing opinions on requiring coxswain members to pay membership fees.

Following conclusion of discussion, Alan Butorac asked for a show of hands and there being more than a two-thirds majority, Proposed Special Resolution 1 was deemed carried.

Proposed Special Resolution 2—clarification of dates of birth for junior/senior members

That the Canberra Rowing Club Constitution be amended as follows:

replace:

5.2 Senior members are Ordinary Members properly registered under rule 4 who are eighteen (18) years of age or over. Senior members are entitled to all the rights and privileges of the Club including the right to attend and vote at General Meetings of the Club.

5.3 Junior members are Ordinary Members properly registered under rule 4 who are under the age of eighteen (18). Junior Members are entitled to all the rights and privileges of the Club, save for the right to vote at any meeting of the Club or to hold office as an Office Bearer or an Ordinary Committee Member of the Club.

replace:

7.1 There shall be two categories of life Members: (a) Honorary Life Members; and (b) Paid Life Members. (c) Associate Life Members

Alan opened the floor of the meeting for discussion on Proposed Special Resolutions 2, 3 and 4. There being no questions, a show of hands for each proposed special resolution indicated well over the required two-thirds majority of those present and the special resolutions were deemed carried.

Election of Office Bearers

Alan noted nomination details were displayed on the club notice board for the required period of time. As there were no more than the required nominations received for each position, the positions were deemed to have been filled:

President Alan Butorac Vice President Peter Lundy Secretary John Southwell Treasurer Jeff Hart Captain Tom Trobe Vice Captain Pat Davoren Committee Louise Parry Michael Colledge Cathy Starling

Proposed changes to membership fees

Alan Butorac referred the meeting to the proposed new membership fees circulated to the membership ahead of the meeting and opened the meeting for discussion.

Various attendees expressed views for and against the increase in fees (including in relation to rack fees for private boats). Alan noted that as the proposed new membership fees were a matter for the incoming committee and would be considered at the first committee meeting. He noted the concerns of members and undertook on behalf of the new committee to have a full consideration of all fees at the next meeting.

Boathouse Development

Alan Butorac commended the work of the boathouse subcommittee (Peter Lundy and John Daley) as well other members who assisted (Kath Wellman and Gail Davis).

John Daley addressed the meeting noting the report of the subcommittee would be available to members online shortly in the member’s web portal. John noted the report would provoke a serious discussion on the things the club needs, the things the club would like and the things that the club can pay for, but that the firmest conclusion was that the club should stay in Yarralumla Bay.

In closing the meeting, Alan Butorac thanked all for attending.

3. MINUTES OF GENERAL MEETING ON 11 OCTOBER 2014

Held at Canberra Rowing Club.

Present: Edwin Bien, Pat Davoren, Mark Kwiatkowski, Randal Lawrence, Brendon Prout, Jenny Harber, Jeff Hart, Alex Hodges, Michael, Cusack, John Daley, Barrie Denny, Dennis Dyer, Janet Farnan, Kym Fisher, Adair Ferguson, Cathy Starling, John Strapps, Tom Trobe, Tony Wilkes, Lyndell Wilson, Heather Snedden, Ann Nicolay, Laurence Sandral, Angus Harding, Vicky Still, Simon Tulloh, Janice Jago, Dermot Balaam, Claudia Bottrill, Geoff Brown, Mike Burgess, Alan Butorac, Mike Clifford, Gillian Colledge, Michael Colledge, Kerry Collins, Narelle Connor, Peter Lundy, Karen McVicker, Darrell Ninham, Louise Parry, Michael Peedom, Damien Pentony, Margaret Pentony, Chris Polyichanin, Anita Preiner, Evelyn Sommer, John Southwell.

Apologies: Paul Philippa, John Simson, Ann Hewitt, Brian Hewitt, Jackie Nielsen, Scott Waller, Alison Creagh, Nerida Carter, Robin Poke, Janny Corry, Elaine Bissaker, Irene Brewer, Anne Charlton, Peter Chivers, Deb Cook, Peter Laidlaw.

In welcoming attendees, Alan Butorac advised that the purpose of the meeting was be to discuss the boathouse development project and a possible course of action involving the upcoming auction of blocks 15 and 16 on the east side of Yarralumla Bay on 15 October 2014. Alan thanked John Daley and Peter Lundy for their work in identifying the opportunity for the Club and working on possible options for the Club to pursue in the event of bidding at the auction.

Alan meeting was a formal general meeting under the club rules with one motion for consideration, with no further decisions given no notices of motion had been submitted. The text of the motion read as followed:

That the Canberra Rowing Club continue to pursue the redevelopment of the boathouse on the east side of Yarralumla Bay, involving registration for bidding for blocks 15 and 16 at auction on 15 October 2014 and:

A the club actively bidding to acquire the lease for both blocks.

B the club not bidding to acquire the lease for both blocks.

In outlining the background to the motion, Alan explained that two blocks of land on the Eastern shore of Yarralumla Bay were to be auctioned by the ACT Government on 15 October 2014.

The Club had previously registered an Expression of Interest in blocks, in order to keep open the Club’s options for redevelopment of our boatshed. Alan advised that the Committee had concluded the only currently viable options for redevelopment are our present site, and the opposite shore of Yarralumla Bay. To that end, the Committee is of the view that the Club should keep its options open by registering as a bidder at the auction, regardless of whether it chose to bid at the auction.

Page 11: 2015 Annual Report...2015 Annual Report 3 2. MINUTES OF THE 50th ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING Held at the ACT Rugby Union Club on 29 July 2014 Present: Edwin Bien, Alison Chinn, Pat Davoren,

2015 Annual Report 9

In order to assist members in considering our preferred position, Alan presented the below summary of pros and cons of development at our present location and the site across the water (should we be in a position to acquire both blocks).

Blocks 15 & 16 (assumes acquisition of both blocks)

Pro

Potentially double the shed area for boat storage

Upstairs clubrooms

Opportunity to develop with a commercial partner to share costs (restaurant)

Potential to lease a bay or bays to eg a school rowing program / dragon-boaters / kayakers etc

Better car parking

Attractive surrounds – grassed area to North; access to Yarralumla Beach etc

No disruption to rowing activities during construction phase

Con

Less attractive visual outlook across the Bay

Commercial property rates – higher than present rates

Auction risk – Less attractive if only one block acquired

Possible additional operating costs arising from the business tenancy

Present Location

Pro

Attractive visual outlook across the lake

Lower annual rates cost

Opportunity to develop upstairs clubrooms

Con

Smaller area for development

Disruption to rowing activities during construction phase

Restrictive lease provisions – no opportunity for commercial partner

Limited opportunity to significantly increase shed area for boat storage

Robust discussion ensued with a number of members expressing views for and against bidding at the upcoming auction.

It was generally agreed that registration for bidding, in and of itself, would keep the

Page 12: 2015 Annual Report...2015 Annual Report 3 2. MINUTES OF THE 50th ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING Held at the ACT Rugby Union Club on 29 July 2014 Present: Edwin Bien, Alison Chinn, Pat Davoren,

2015 Annual Report 10

Club 'in the game' in the event the auction was passed in (i.e. no result) and that registration would demonstrate Club’s interest in future development.

It was generally agreed by attendees that a two-thirds majority should be required to decide the outcome of the meeting to ensure a clear decision was made.

The motion was put to attendees with a well-over two thirds majority voting as follows:

That the Canberra Rowing Club continue to pursue the redevelopment of the boathouse on the east side of Yarralumla Bay, involving registration for bidding for blocks 15 and 16 at auction on 15 October 2014 and the club not bidding to acquire the lease for both blocks.

In closing the meeting, Alan advised that the Committee would take the resolution as being a clear Club decision not to bid for either or both of the blocks, but that the Committee would register to bid to demonstrate the Club’s interest in future development. Alan advised that the Committee would take action consistent with the results of the general meeting and would advise of developments as they occur.

** The auction of blocks 15 and 16 on the east side of Yarralumla Bay resulted in Canberra Girls Grammar School (CGGS) winning both auctions for $860,000 and $925,000 respectively.

Our representatives at the auction reported vigorous bidding in both auctions as well as international participation in the auction.

This outcome of the auction was good news for CRC as it further assists us in developing the future directions for our boatshed and our presence at the auction further demonstrates our commitment to our future development.

It should be noted that CGGS rowing club was incubated within CRC, similar to Marist College Canberra Rowing Club, and this auction result and ongoing CGGS investment in rowing demonstrates the success of CRC’s investment years ago.**

4. PRESIDENT’S REPORT

It can seem a little anti-climactic. 51. Big milestones seem to take an age to arrive. There’s a flurry of activity that never seems to provide enough time to properly reflect. And then it’s old news. Then, you’re 51, looking back.

But really...what a fabulous year it was. A great celebration of our first half century, thanks to the tireless efforts of the 50th Anniversary Committee. And to all the members and friends who joined in to help us celebrate.

And what better way to celebrate our 50th season! The women’s Premiership. The men’s Premiership. The overall Premiership. The Uriarra Cup. The Phere Niki Trophy. The President’s Shovel.

That’s quite a season! Congratulations one and all for a very fine collection of pennants and silverware for 2014-15.

Page 13: 2015 Annual Report...2015 Annual Report 3 2. MINUTES OF THE 50th ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING Held at the ACT Rugby Union Club on 29 July 2014 Present: Edwin Bien, Alison Chinn, Pat Davoren,

2015 Annual Report 11

And some stellar performances at National level too through the year. World Cup Gold (8+ & 4-) to Angus Moore. National Gold (LM2X & LM4X) and Silver (LM1X) to Tom Perry, culminating in National selection for the World Championships in the LM4X. And National Gold (LTA1X) to Cameron Crombie.

Congratulations to those three...and to all those who did CRC proud at National regattas.

Our Masters rowers also lived up once again the outstanding record of CRC at Masters regattas. Too many to mention...but special mention must go to Mike Burgess, winner of the Champion of Champions at the AMRC regatta at Penrith. Well done!

And another fine year too for our Junior (Marist) rowers. The Marist program has thoroughly matured, into a steady rhythm that has seen the original juniors become the seniors, and has brought increasing success in local and interstate regattas as well as some creditable individual performances at National regattas.

A key measure of the success of the Marist program has been the seamless transition from the dedicated and tireless founding Executive of the MCCRC to the “new guard”, who have begun to build on the solid foundation established by the founders.

We look forward to watching with pride the continuing success of our young Marist clubmates.

Off the water...and our major focus has been and remains our vision to redevelop our boatshed. To turn our boatshed into a clubhouse...a place for fellowship, not just for rowing. And a place we can proudly recommend as the best rowing club in the land.

A few years ago, we decided to make a start on setting funds aside. With a concept but no real plan. A way to start to focus our minds to what will be a significant endeavour.

We set out to commit $20,000 each year to form the beginnings of a clubhouse fund. And we have exceeded that commitment most years.

This year, we have more than doubled it. Through careful management of Club funds. And through some effective fundraising, thanks to all the enthusiastic CRC volunteers who have participated as marshalls and helpers for Capital Punishment and the Canberra Marathon.

We have established a new ASF fund for tax-deductible contributions to our Clubhouse Fund. I urge you to consider making a contribution – however large or small you can afford.

And we will be looking to ramp up fundraising efforts in the year ahead.

We will shortly have concept plans to share, as we work with all members to refine what we want our new clubhouse to offer. I urge all members to get involved, and be

Page 14: 2015 Annual Report...2015 Annual Report 3 2. MINUTES OF THE 50th ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING Held at the ACT Rugby Union Club on 29 July 2014 Present: Edwin Bien, Alison Chinn, Pat Davoren,

2015 Annual Report 12

part of the planning process.

As ever, I urge you also to remember Corporate Rowing. It’s a major fundraiser for our Club. The more crews we can engage, the sooner we can reach (and exceed) our fundraising targets.

For information on ASF donations, or Corporate Rowing...please ask any member of your Committee.

To all those members who have cheerfully volunteered to take on all sorts of roles and tasks throughout the year...thank you!! Without you, we would not have achieved the things we have achieved, and we would not be the Club we are.

In particular, my thanks to each member of the Committee for their support and hard work during this past year:

Peter Lundy Vice President John Southwell Secretary Jeff Hart Treasurer Tom Trobe Club Captain Pat Davoren Club Vice-Captain Louise Parry Committee Michael Colledge Committee Cathy Starling Committee (Part year) Sara Wightman Committee (Part year)

Each of these people takes on a good deal of responsibility and commitment on behalf of all CRC members.

Without their cheerful contributions, we wouldn’t have the best rowing club in Australia!

To all of the CRC community...good health, and happy rowing.

Alan Butorac President

Equipment

The club has acquired a new build of Sykes boat called the Initiator. The Initiator range has been designed by Sykes, but is built in Zhaoqing, China. The boat has fibreglass exterior and internal surfaces, which combined with Spheretex gives supreme durability. The unique design and construction, which includes structural elements in carbon fibre, means the boat is remarkably light for a boat of this style. The club acquired a medium Initiator covering the 70-85kg range. Based on the success of the purchase, there is a plan to purchase a small Initiator, with a weight range of 55-70kg.

To extend the life of the existing club fleet, over the past year we have had 3 major boat refurbishments – the Still, Piccadilly Circus and Googong. The Still has been heavily used as standard club boat over the past years and was having issues with wear on the gunnels. The Piccadilly Circus was purchased from ACTAS many years ago and had suffered from the unfortunate decision to use Jiff as a cleaner. The Googong was also a second hand purchase but was just in the need of many minor hull repairs. All boats have been re-sprayed and repairs made as needed. In addition to the refurbishment, the Still and Piccadilly Circus have been converted to quick release – scull and sweep. This change adds huge flexibility to the boats and the fleet. Minor refurbishment was also completed on the Craig Jones, Kerry Knowler and John Simson – replacing running gear.

The past season has also seen the acquisition of a new trailer for the club, purchased from the AIS to replace the ‘large’ trailer. This trailer is a more modern style, providing greater capacity and flexibility than the ‘large’ trailer with vertical supports on the outside, opposed to the traditional T structure. The trailer was custom built by Prime Trailers in Geelong, modelled off a German built trailer that was transported back to Australia by the AIS.

I would like to thank the many members who, over the years, have maintained and towed the old trailer, specifically to Daz, Simmo, Warner and Strapsy. And especially to Edwin, who whilst at CGGS designed and invested many hours into designing and building the trailer, and of course continued to provide maintenance while at CRC

Competition

This year the club has maintained a high level of competition participation and success established over the past years. Again the Club has retained the men’s, women’s and overall premiership in the local competition and is increasing our presence at interstate regattas. All members of the club have contributed to these amazing results. Thank you to the members who organise crews, entries and training. A huge thank you to all the coaches and coxes – these results would not be achievable with their tireless efforts and commitment.

Elite

Tom Perry has achieved outstanding results over the past 3 years after his return to rowing. He is currently selected in the Australian Senior A team in the lightweight coxless quad. This crew is training to compete at the World Rowing Championship in France later this year. In Canberra, Tom has achieved a full time scholarship with the ACT Academy of Sport. This has allowed him to shoot to success, taking out silver in the Lightweight Men's Single Scull and gold medals in the Lightweight Men's Double Scull and the Lightweight Men's Quadruple Scull at this year’s National Championships. At the ACT Championships, Tom won gold in the Open Men’s Single, Coxless Quad, Coxless Four and Eight, and fortunately missing out on the clean sweep, placing second in the Double. Good luck with your upcoming trip Tom - we are looking forward to watching one of our own on the international circuit.

Sub-Elite/Club Grade

The sub-elite program has continued solidify their presence in the local rowing scene and is beginning to crack into the interstate regattas. The combined squad has grown to almost 40 rowers.

Season highlights

ACT Champs – retaining the Urriara Cup (OM8+), President’s Shovel (Open Men 2nd 8+), Banjo Cup (OM4-), Open Men’s Quad Scull, Open Men’s Single Scull and placing second in the Open Men’s Double Sculls. The Women have improved dramatically from last year, winning the Open Women’s Quad and placing third in the Coxless Four, Double and Eight.

Winning 23 medals at Ed Trickett regatta in SIRC (10 gold, 8 silver and 5 bronze medals).

The squad has increased their coaching capacity, with the inclusion of Geoff Brown. Geoff brings a tremendous amount of experience to the coaching team, and has been able to provide a little relief to the current coaching team.

Marist School

Marist Rowing Club has progressed over the past years to become extremely competitive amongst their peer schools. Locally the boys placed second in the men’s premiership, stepping over Radford College and Black Mountain RC from last season. A season highlight was the winning of the under 15 double scull – well done to Will and Spencer.

As the club completes its 5th year, there comes an end for some of the foundation rowers. These boys have progressed from year 7 to 12. A handful of these boys have been integrating into the CRC Men’s squad for the past few years, and are planning to continue rowing with CRC.

This year the school has competed in over 15 regattas, local and interstate, keeping the club coaches and administrators extremely busy. A huge thank you to the management group and parents for continuing to grow the club and increase participation of rowing in the ACT.

Masters

The masters have had an extremely successful season, from local competition through to international. The season kicked off in October in Ballarat, with the FISA World Masters regatta. CRC collected an amazing 10 gold, 10 silver and 11 bronze.

With very little time to recover, a month later, many CRC masters set their goals on the longer race of 8.6km at the Head of the Yarra. CRC sent a contingent of 5 eights. All eights achieved great results in the tough competition, with one of the crews retaining the gold in the Women’s F eight. Showing great depth, CRC also placed second in the same category.

Throughout the local season there was a strong consistent effort from all masters with strong performances in the small boats – singles and pairs.

Completing the masters season, CRC sent teams to the NSW Masters Championships and Australian Masters Championships at SIRC. CRC took out 1st place in the medal count at the NSW Champs, and picked up the most gold at the Australian Masters Championships. An amazing performance at the regatta was Mick Burgess winning the Champion of Champions single sculling race. Adding to the already great regatta for CRC, was the large contingent of CRC members representing the ACT inter-state races,

It has been an enjoyable season as captain of the Canberra Rowing Club. Thank you for all the support I have received from the committee and members.

6. CORPORATE ROWING

The Club’s held its 13th Corporate Rowing Program during 2014-15. Participating crews were:

Server Racks Australia Learn to Row A

Department of Defence Red Learn to Row B

Department of Defence White Marist College CRC Parents

The program ended with a successful regatta on Yarramundi Reach on Sunday 23rd November 2014 followed by lunch at the boatshed. The winning crew was Learn to Row B by a narrow margin over Defence White.

This program depends on the willingness of over 20 members to severely restrict their own training and coaching for a month and dedicate their time to corporate crew preparation. It also requires a major effort from members in publicising corporate rowing with their agencies and businesses and recruiting them to the program. The importance of this effort should not be underestimated. A number of members made determined efforts to recruit crews that were ultimately unsuccessful. Despite this, we are grateful for them having a go.

Particular thanks are due to Ewart Challis and Simon Dunphy for successfully marketing this event. If everyone approached this event with the determination of these members its success would be guaranteed!

The number of crews was only sufficient for a viable program with the addition of two Learn to Row crews. A better effort at recruitment could have seen all training slots filled and additional income of at least $20,000. Despite a continuing difficult financial environment for Commonwealth agencies and local businesses, we must make every effort to redress this situation by vigorously marketing the event all year through all of our contacts. Corporate rowing events are the easiest method of raising significant funds and are crucial to timely fundraising for an improved boatshed.

In addition to financial benefits, corporate rowing provides an important avenue for recruiting capable new Club members who emerge from the program ready to train and race in Club crews. Ex-corporate rowers are prominent in the Club as some of our most enthusiastic competitors and as coaches and administrators.

Dates for Corporate Rowing 2015 are:

Introduction: Sunday 18th October

Training Starts: Monday 26th October

Training Ends: Saturday 21 November

Regatta: Sunday 22nd November

7. MARIST COLLEGE CANBERRA ROWING CLUB

Marist College Canberra Rowing Club (MCCRC) continued its growth and development as a junior rowing club in 2014-15. A school boy club established in 2010, its broad aim is to develop the sport of rowing within Marist College Canberra and to provide students with access to rowing as a summer sport option in a safe, enjoyable and competitive environment. The Club's vision remains to be a leading school rowing program and Club in the ACT in the areas of competition, development and governance.

MCCRC maintains a mutually beneficial affiliation with Canberra Rowing Club. From foundation of the club MCCRC has had the good fortune to be able to use the facilities of Canberra Rowing Club (CRC) for training and Regattas. As in previous years the majority of MCCRC training sessions in 2014-15 were held after school throughout the summer months. This year a core group of senior boys undertook dedicated training with CRC coaches and competed locally and interstate as Marist / CRC rowers and coxswains.

Marist boys and parents continue to make a valuable contribution to CRC through club membership, working bees, jointly hosting the ACT Championships with CRC and numerous other jobs around the shed.

The 2014/15 rowing season proved to be as busy as any other season. It started with a mini ‘camp’ in September and the mandatory ‘run, swim, roll-over’ testing in October and ended with a very successful Trivia night in March and senior boys rowing at Nationals in April.

The start of the season brought a number of changes and additions to the MCCRC committee. Not least was Neil Smith, our long term President, coach and committee member, stepping down from the role of President. On behalf of the committee, a huge thanks to Neil for his dedication to date and his continuing support of MCCRC.

MCCRC registrations in 2014-15 numbered 56, with 28 returning rowers and 28 new rowers. Our junior rowers were exceptionally strong in number and enthusiasm and we saw some terrific results during the season, including at the NSW School Boy Head of the River and the ACT Championships.

Some of the highlights for the year include:

the election of Patrick Dunphy as Captain of Boats and Ben Page as Vice-Captain of Boats;

competing in 15 regattas between November 2014 and April 2015, with some of our Year 12 boys finishing the season at the Edward Trickett Regatta at SIRC, rowing for CRC;

a State Championship in the U15Ch 2x with Will Dimoff and Spencer Collaviti

Page 21: 2015 Annual Report...2015 Annual Report 3 2. MINUTES OF THE 50th ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING Held at the ACT Rugby Union Club on 29 July 2014 Present: Edwin Bien, Alison Chinn, Pat Davoren,

2015 Annual Report 19

the annual rowing ‘camp’ in January complete with ‘Tough Farmer’ obstacle course thanks to the Cusack family;

increased exposure within the College as a successful, vibrant and popular summer sporting club. This included a very generous donation from the College towards a new boat, a number of senior College staff attending regattas and social functions, and general encouragement of participation within the College;

the emergence of a keen new parent group eager to push the Club into the future;

the successful MCCRC Learn to Row program held in both April and September;

a parent/teacher crew (Totally Rigged) participating in CRC’s corporate rowing regatta for the second year in a row;

senior boys transitioning to CRC junior men’s crews;

three senior boys attaining their Level 1 rowing coaching qualifications and certification

a number of very enjoyable social occasions, not least the trivia night which raised the better part of funding required to purchase two new training singles!

As our fifth rowing season drew to a close, MCCRC reached a significant milestone with our final group of founding rowers coming to the end of their time rowing for the Club and due to finish Year 12 this year. The boys – Patrick Dunphy, Ben Page, Ben Mossop, Andrew Paton, Sam Smith and Hugo Webster - began in Year 7 in 2010 when MCCRC was formed with Ben McMahon and Ruaraidh Mills, the club’s two other year 12 senior rowers, having been involved since Year 8. To the credit and dedication of these boys:

four have gone on to represent Marist at national level (2013-quad, 2014 -single, 2015-singles and double);

three were selected in the ACT Men’s Youth VIII training squad in 2015; three became accredited and practising rowing coaches; and

four joined the MCCRC committee.

We thank these young men and their parents for their efforts and wish them well in the future. It is hoped they will continue with the sport of rowing – ideally maintaining support for MCCRC and rowing with CRC!!!

The new season begins in Term 4, 2015. We continue our ongoing journey towards a long term home for MCCRC. Focus as always will be on purchase of additional equipment (including hopefully two new singles and a second hand quad) and the inevitable search for storage space required for this equipment. 2014-15 saw an invigorated parent group working to raise funds for the boys and club, and hopefully this continues in 2015-16 and beyond.

The committee, coaches, parents and boys wish to thank CRC for their ongoing support of the MCCRC rowing program and we look forward to continuing our relationship to the betterment of both clubs.

Here’s to continued success for MCCRC and CRC both on and off the water.

8. ACT ROWING ASSOCIATION

As a foundation club of the ACT Rowing Association (Rowing ACT) and its largest affiliated club, we have a particular responsibility to support Rowing ACT. This is done through the work of our members on the RACT Board and the Union of Boat Race Officials and by our support of many other RACT activities.

Two Club members, Pat Davoren (Secretary and Public Officer) and Alan Butorac (Committee Member), serve on the RACT Board. Edwin Bien, Alan Butorac, Claudia Bottrill, Brendon Prout and Ron Hibberson have served as members of the Union of Boat Race Officials. Alison Chinn made a major contribution to the effective operation of the RACT office as a volunteer by supporting Executive Officer Michael Cusack throughout the year.

Page 23: 2015 Annual Report...2015 Annual Report 3 2. MINUTES OF THE 50th ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING Held at the ACT Rugby Union Club on 29 July 2014 Present: Edwin Bien, Alison Chinn, Pat Davoren,

Susan Linacre is a member of the Rowing Australia Masters Commission that advises RA on policy for masters rowing. John Simson, along with Alex Leitch of Black Mountain Rowing Club, puts in many hours maintaining the buoyed course on Yarramundi Reach. Tom Trobe has put a major effort into improving regatta entry software.

Chris Polyichanin, Geoff Brown and Mark Kwiatkowski have all contributed as coaches to rowing development activities by RACT and the rowing unit of the ACT Academy of Sport.

Rowing ACT has engaged in the following areas that directly affect the Club:

progressing options for establishing a joint (with Triathlon ACT) boatshed and administrative facility on Black Mountain Peninsula;

implementing strategies to limit the length of regattas – a cause of strain amongst our dedicated boat race officials;

amending the constitution of Rowing ACT to bring its operation in line with modern practice and give effect to governance principles mandated by the Australian Sports Commission; and

improving facilities for competitors and spectators on the Yarramundi Reach Rowing Course, including installation of pontoon moorings at Weston Park.

Andrew Randal, who commenced his rowing career in Canberra as a CRC junior, has achieved great success in his first year as Head Coach of the ACT Academy of Sport Rowing Unit. He has reinvigorated the pathways of recruitment of rowers to ACTAS and increased its coaching output leading to improved performance of ACT rowing teams and ensuring a stream of talented young rowers for the future. RACT awarded Andrew the Cliff Hill Shield for an outstanding contribution to ACT Rowing in 2014-15.

10. CAPITAL (BOATSHED) FUND

During the 2010-11 season, the Committee resolved to establish a capital fund with the dual objectives of accumulating sufficient money for redevelopment of the boatshed and providing a contingency reserve to meet unexpected calls on Club funds.

From the original commitment was for $20,000 per year to be set aside for the Capital Fund, we have now completed our sixth year and are over 50% higher than our initial target.

As at the close of the financial year, 30 April 2015, there has been no expenditure for the boathouse. Although the committee would note, we have now received the completed the Site Survey and Geotech reports, These are the first expenditure items against the Capital fund, and will be reflected in the 2015-16 financial year.

The Capital fund Balance is $185,882.33 as at 30 April 2015.

2009-10 $20,000.00

11. FUNDRAISING

During 2014-15, the CRC fundraising subcommittee was established, made up of Jeff Hart, Louise Parry and Peter Lundy to drive fundraising efforts.

A determined effort of fundraising supplemented the savings, which make up the 2014-15 commitment to the boathouse fund. Fundraising activities undertaken during 2014-15 include, but are not limited to…

Volunteer Marshalling at

o Capital Punishment

o CBR100

o Fairfax Running Festival

Corporate Rowing and Learn to Row

Savings from the Trailer upgrade through the AIS

Page 25: 2015 Annual Report...2015 Annual Report 3 2. MINUTES OF THE 50th ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING Held at the ACT Rugby Union Club on 29 July 2014 Present: Edwin Bien, Alison Chinn, Pat Davoren,

2015 Annual Report 23

Rowing experience

CRC Wine Sales

Winter Time Trial BBQs

Miscellaneous club events

The committee would like to thank all club members, who contributed both time and effort to assist in all fundraising activities.

It is also noted that with the support of the Club Captain, the committee has developed a policy to review the fleet for refurbishment of current fleet before considering new purchases, during this period of fundraising - leading up to the new Boathouse. The benefits are twofold in maintaining a core of the current fleet to a high standard for racing and to maximize the lifespan of the current fleet and improve utilisation of current asset base.

Through the Australian Sports foundation, the committee has established the Canberra Rowing Club Foundation.

The ‘Foundation’ includes two funds for Canberra Rowing Club:

Boat Shed Redevelopment Fund

Rowing Equipment Fund

The ‘Foundation’ utilises the online portal from the Australian Sports foundation, where CRC holds its own webpage. This portal accepts online ‘tax deductible’ donations and holds ‘deductible gift status’ for the benefit of donors. https://asf.org.au/organisation/canberra-rowing-club-inc/

These activities assist us in getting towards a target of $900,000. However, this is only the start and the next year is crucial in driving towards our target. Therefore we will need to do more and need the best efforts of all members help to build on the fundraising efforts made thus far.

Already in the next financial year, we have had some great fundraising efforts undertaken including the raffle and silent auctions at the CRC Annual Dinner and the kind donations we received through the Australian Sports Foundation at the end of the financial year.

I look forward to your support in the upcoming fundraising activities

Jeff Hart Fundraising Subcommittee

Note 1: Summary of Significant Accounting Policies

This financial report is a special purpose financial report prepared in order to satisfy the financial reporting requirements of the Associations Incorporations Act of the Australian Capital Territory. The committee has determined that the association is not a reporting entity.

The financial report has been prepared on an accruals basis and is based on historical costs and does not take into account changing money values or, except where specifically stated, current valuations of non-current assets.

The following significant accounting policies, which are consistent with the previous period unless otherwise stated, have been adopted in the preparation of this financial report.

(a) Income Tax

The income tax expense (income) for the year comprises current income tax expense (income). The association does not apply deferred tax.

Current income tax expense charged to profit or loss is the tax payable on taxable income calculated using applicable income tax rates enacted, or substantially enacted, as at the end of the reporting period. Current tax liabilities (assets) are therefore measured at the amounts expected to be paid to (recovered from) the relevant taxation authority.

Deferred income tax expense reflects movements in deferred tax asset and deferred tax liability

Current and deferred income tax expense (income) is charged or credited directly to equity instead of the profit or loss when the tax relates to items that are credited or charged directly to equity.

Deferred tax assets and liabilities are ascertained based on temporary differences arising between the tax bases of assets and liabilities and their carrying amounts in the financial statements. Deferred tax assets also result where amounts have been fully expensed but future tax deductions are available. No deferred income tax will be recognised from the initial recognition of an asset or liability, excluding a business combination, where there is no effect on accounting or taxable profit or loss.

Deferred tax assets and liabilities are calculated at the tax rates that are expected to apply to the period when the asset is realised or the liability is settled, based on tax rates enacted or substantively enacted at the end of the reporting period. Their measurement also reflects the manner in which management expects to recover or settle the carrying amount of the related asset or liability.

Deferred tax assets relating to temporary differences and unused tax losses are recognised only to the extent that it is probable that future taxable profit will be available against which the benefits of the deferred tax asset can be used.

(b) Property, Plant and Equipment (PPE)

Leasehold improvements and office equipment are carried at cost less, where applicable, any accumulated depreciation.

Page 36: 2015 Annual Report...2015 Annual Report 3 2. MINUTES OF THE 50th ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING Held at the ACT Rugby Union Club on 29 July 2014 Present: Edwin Bien, Alison Chinn, Pat Davoren,

Notes to the Financial Statements

For the year ended 30 April 2015

2015 Annual Report 34

The depreciable amount of all PPE is depreciated over the useful lives of the assets to the association commencing from the time the asset is held ready for use.

Leasehold improvements are amortised over the shorter of either the unexpired period of the lease or the estimated useful lives of the improvements.

(c) Impairment of Assets

At the end of each reporting period, the entity reviews the carrying values of its tangible and intangible assets to determine whether there is any indication that those assets have been impaired. If such an indication exists, the recoverable amount of the asset, being the higher of the asset’s fair value less costs to sell and value in use, is compared to the asset’s carrying value. Any excess of the asset’s carrying value over its recoverable amount is expensed to the income statement.

(d) Provisions

Provisions are recognised when the association has a legal or constructive obligation, as a result of past events, for which it is probable that an outflow of economic benefits will result and that outflow can be reasonably measured. Provisions are measured at the best estimate of the amounts required to settle the obligation at the end of the reporting period.

(e) Cash and Cash Equivalents

Cash and cash equivalents include cash on hand, deposits held at call with banks, and other short-term highly liquid investments with original maturities of three months or less.

(f) Revenue and Other Income

Revenue is measured at the fair value of the consideration received or receivable after taking into account any trade discounts and volume rebates allowed. For this purpose, deferred consideration is not discounted to present values when recognising revenue.

Interest revenue is recognised using the effective interest rate method, which for floating rate financial assets is the rate inherent in the instrument. Dividend revenue is recognised when the right to receive a dividend has been established.

Grant and donation income is recognised when the entity obtains control over the funds, which is generally at the time of receipt.

All revenue is stated net of the amount of goods and services tax (GST).

(g) Goods and Services Tax (GST)

Revenues, expenses and assets are recognised net of the amount of GST, except where the amount of GST incurred is not recoverable from the Tax Office. In these circumstances, the GST is recognised as part of the cost of acquisition of the asset or as part of an item of the expense. Receivables and payables in the assets and liabilities statement are shown inclusive of GST.

(h) Trade and Other Payables

Trade and other payables represent the liability outstanding at the end of the reporting period for goods and services received by the association during the reporting period, which remain unpaid. The balance is recognised as a current liability with the amounts normally paid within 30 days of recognition of the liability.

Independent Auditor's Report to the Members

We have audited the accompanying financial report, being a special purpose financial report, of Canberra Rowing Club Inc (the association), which comprises the Statement by Members of the Committee, Income and Expenditure Statement, Balance Sheet, notes comprising a summary of significant accounting policies and other explanatory notes for the financial year ended 30 April 2015.

Committee's Responsibility for the Financial Report

The committee of Canberra Rowing Club Inc is responsible for the preparation and fair presentation of the financial report, and have determined that the basis of preparation described in Note 1 is appropriate to meet the requirements of the Associations Incorporation Act of the Australian Capital Territory 1991 and is appropriate to meet the needs of the members. The committee’s responsibilities also includes such internal control as the committee determine is necessary to enable the preparation and fair presentation of a financial report that is free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error.

Auditor's Responsibility

Our responsibility is to express an opinion on the financial report based on our audit. We have conducted our audit in accordance with Australian Auditing Standards. Those Standards require that we comply with relevant ethical requirements relating to audit engagements and plan and perform the audit to obtain reasonable assurance whether the financial report is free from material misstatement.

An audit involves performing procedures to obtain audit evidence about the amounts and disclosures in the financial report. The procedures selected depend on the auditor’s judgement, including the assessment of the risks of material misstatement of the financial report, whether due to fraud or error. In making those risk assessments, the auditor considers internal control relevant to the association's preparation and fair presentation of the financial report in order to design audit procedures that are appropriate in the circumstances, but not for the purpose of expressing an opinion on the effectiveness of the association's internal control. An audit also includes evaluating the appropriateness of accounting policies used and the reasonableness of accounting estimates made by the committee, as well as evaluating the overall presentation of the financial report.

We believe that the audit evidence we have obtained is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for our audit opinion.

Opinion

In our opinion, the financial report presents fairly, in all material respects, the financial position of Canberra Rowing Club Inc as at 30 April 2015 and its financial performance for the year then ended in accordance with the accounting policies described in Note 1 to the financial statements, and the requirements of the Associations Incorporation Act of the Australian Capital Territory 1991.
