Texts, Translations, & Musical Examples

If you want to go with this man, then go with him happily from here, for our blessing goes with you. Put your trust in the Almighty, and He will build your house, which will always flourish.

J. S. Bach BWV 216:

2. Rezitativ S A - Neisse, Pleisse Sopran So angenehm auch mein Revier, So weicht mein Schönstes doch von mir. Wohin, Du anmutsvolle Hempelin?

1. Aria (Duet) - Neisse, Pleisse Contented city of the Pleisse, - Fortunate city of the Neisse, – Your delight - Your flourishing - increases and sparkles above all others. Whoever takes pleasure in your splendor, - your beauty, - Will fall in love and remain in love with you, And nothing else will please him more. 2. Recitative S A - Neisse, Pleisse Neisse As pleasant as my borders are, Yet the fairest inhabitant departs from me. Where are you going, Most charming Fräulein Hempel? Pleisse Here, where the Naiads themselves Welcome her to Pleisse’s banks. Neisse Ah, Pleisse’s shore, hated Pleisse’s shore! Who has praised you so And described you as lovely to her? You have your own Abundance of beautiful children; Why do you want to take her from my region? With annoyance I now say to you: You have stolen my best from me. 3. Aria S Neisse Charming Fräulein Hempel, Your soul has no flaw, Your face is like an angel’s, And angelic are all your thoughts, Charming Fräulein Hempel. Darling Fräulein Hempel, You, you were my jewel, But since you have left me, My crown has also gone, Darling Fräulein Hempel.

4. Recitative A Pleisse Temper your annoyance, Dear Neisse River, And send your Fräulein Hempel To me with a good will! Come, make a choice Here among my sons! Were it to happen, that among them One pleased you as a bridegroom For one of your beauties, Then you would have at any time A free choice here. Let it be enough, that every day I will care for your lovely child With health and good fortune. 5. Aria A Pleisse With laughter and play, With kisses and caresses, Love creates its eternal bonds. Then years seem like days gone by, Then even hours can be called minutes. 6. Recitative A S - Pleisse, Neisse Pleisse How lovingly will she now be welcomed among my women! Behold, how friendly they are with her! They send their greetings to her through me. Neisse I wish that, after I have brought her here, my Fräulein Hempel Will lose nothing of her joy. Dearest Wolff; loving and attached to her, Receive her all in garlands! Pleisse She will wear her veil tomorrow. Neisse For a young maiden, that is a great pleasure! Pleisse Meanwhile I will enclose these two In my most earnest wishes. Neisse My thoughts will be one with yours.

7. Aria (Duet) A S - Pleisse, Neisse Pleisse Health and blessing Shall care for you, worthy pair, As my stream refreshes the meadows. Neisse And the delight you share Shall spring forth More richly than my stream gushes. Pleisse and Neisse Thus will their cradles- their souls - with children - with delight - be adorned, and the longer these are enjoyed, the dearer they will be.
