She is a 2007 graduate of the Lions Leadership Institute. She currently serves on the Minnesota Lions Vision Foundation as a trustee. She was our District Governor in 2011-2012. She is a Melvin Jones Fellow, Dream Catcher, and Helen Keller Award recipient along with other awards. She teaches at Marshall High School and, along with Wayne has raised two sons.

Dr. Amos Deinard is an Associate
Professor, Department of Pediatrics and
School of Public Health, University of
Minnesota. He received his BA in 1957
(Harvard University), his MD in 1962
(University of Minnesota), his Pediatric
training from 1962-69 (University of
Minnesota), and his MPH in 1985
(University of Minnesota). He has
worked in the community for the past 45 years as part of
his University appointment, first as Pediatric Consultant
to the Minneapolis Health Department’s Maternal and
Child Health Program (1969-84), next as Executive
Director, Community-University Health Care Center/
Variety Children’s Clinic, a neighborhood-based, primary
care clinic (medical, dental and mental health care)
serving a medical-social high-risk, racially heterogeneous
population (1984-99) and last as the holder of the Ruben-
Bentson Chair in Pediatric Community Health (1998-
2004).
For 15 years he ran a community health center and for
the past 14 years, he has devoted 80%-100% of his time
working to improve the oral health status of high-risk
children. He created a web-based training program for
primary care medical providers (Dental Health Screening
and Fluoride Varnish Application) and an atlas of
common dental pathology in English and Spanish. He is
currently involved in the MN Oral Health Project in 21
counties in Southwestern Minnesota in conjunction with
the MN Southwestern Health and Human Services
agency. One aspect of that project is to encourage
members of three service organizations (Kiwanis, Lions
and Rotary) to become vocal advocates of the project so
the community can take ownership of the caries crisis
affecting their children and solve it.
Brent Olson is a writer living near
Clinton, Minnesota. His first four books
are The Lay of the Land, A View from
the Prairie, Letters from a Peasant, Still
Whistling, the only sane response to a
complicated world and Papa, Figuring
Out What Matters. The Midwest
Independent Publishers Association awarded Brent Olson
the award for Best Regional Book for Letters from a
Peasant.
The Upper Minnesota River Art Crawl selected him as
their Tributary Artist of 2010. He is the first ever recipient
of this award.
He won the American Agricultural Editor's Association
Award for "Best Regular Column" in 2010 and 2013. He
also won AAEA Awards in 2011 and 2012.
His weekly column, "Independently Speaking", is
syndicated around the world.
He is a member of the American Agricultural Editor's
Association and the International Federation of
Agricultural Journalists.
In 2012 he was awarded a Bush Foundation Fellowship.
His Bush Foundation Project, The Inadvertent Cafe, was
profiled by Minnesota Public Radio.
In the past ten years he’s filed stories from six
continents.
Leos Experience 5M2 Leo Hilary Wickenhauser, age 17, is a member of the Cologne Leos, Charter Member and Current Leo President. She received the Leo of the Year 2014, Recipient of IPP Barry Palmer’s Presidential Leadership Medal, USA Leo Representative of Leo Europa Forum (LEF) held in Istanbul, Turkey. Panelist speaker at USA/Canada Forum in San Juan Puerto Rico. She is a Senior at Main Street School of Performing Arts in Hopkins, Minnesota.
Her presentation will be about her involvement with the book drive which will cross over into Leo
of the Year and Presidential Leadership Medal which will carry into speaking in Istanbul and
Puerto Rico.
Foster Parenting – PDG Allen & Karen Struck Karen and Allen have been Foster Parents since 1998 (16 years). We have had over 65 children in our home. One as short as over-night and one as long as nine years. We want to share our experiences, the challenges, and the rewards. There is a strong need for Foster Parents in most Counties. It fits in with being a Lion. It is a way to give back to our communities. There is nothing that can match being in a young person’s life and making a difference.

Another year ends and a new one begins. As an old song says, "Time keeps on
slipping, slipping, into the future”. It has been a great year thus far with about half of
the clubs in our district visited. What a great part of Minnesota we live in, and the clubs
I have visited seem to be actively involved in their communities. Some at first don't
think they do much, and then the list starts growing. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK,
LIONS!
Our District had a shining moment of success in November. Our health assessment
report arrived with a plus 5 in membership. That means 5 more lions joined the
organization than left or died. WOW! When I was an active pastor there were times
when I wanted to just savor Easter and Christmas for a few extra weeks; unfortunately,
"time keeps on slipping into the future”. Our membership growth was just for a
moment as there is still a club closing that has not been made official yet. BUT WAIT!
What if each club continued to seek out new members? What if each club member did
truly "Ask One!" in the next few weeks to join their club, come check it out, help at an
event. Maybe our shining moment could become a sun-shiny day or even bigger. Did
you see the new version of Peter Pan? Did you join, like you did as a kid, in bringing
Tinkerbell back to life? DID YOU BELIEVE? Do you BELIEVE we can keep the
growth in this District going? I do. Do you BELIEVE we can "Strengthen the Pride?" I
DO.
Elsewhere you will find information on the speakers coming for Mid-Winter. Stop
being a typical Southwestern Minnesotan, putting your registration off to the last
minute, and get yourself registered for what I think will be another great event this
year. What's that you say? "Never been there!" This is your year. Could we possibly get
every club in the District to send at least one person to discover what a great
opportunity this is to fellowship with other Lions, get new ideas, and find out there's
something out there beyond the local club. Don't let your District Governor team, and
planning committee, down!
Cheri's probably wondering how to get all these words and the other great stuff into
the newsletter in a limited space, so I will end. Remember to send in your club
visitation forms; I want to visit every club. There’s still room for those who wish to
attend the Leadership Institute, and of course we're still looking for that one or two
individuals who willing to step into District leadership positions in the coming year. I
hope you had a blessed Holiday Season, and that you will have a Happy New Year.

1st VDG Steve Collins visited the Lucan Lions
Happy Holidays! We are in the thick of celebrating Christmas and New Year's! It's an exciting time to be a Lion. We are getting our final plans into place for the upcoming Mid-Winter Convention in February and also looking toward the coming year! I am continuing my training to be your next District Governor -- and the time is coming! I spent a fun night in Lucan recently, celebrating the 41st year of the Lucan Lions Club. What I found most exciting about the visit was that there were several charter members there. The Lucan Lions is also growing -- adding new members who are bringing in new ideas and energy! The Lucan club is a perfect example of a service club -- even though Lucan is a town of less than 200 people, the Lucan Lions has more than 30 members. And the club continues its strong history of dedicated service! The DG Team has been working with the MD5M to develop a plan to increase membership. I support DG Dave's mission to strengthen 5M3 by supporting the existing clubs in our district. Many of our clubs are located in communities like Lucan, where finding new members is not impossible, but is definitely challenging. We need to support our local clubs in our rural areas. Often those communities are in most need of the service Lions Clubs provide. So as we go into 2015, we need to focus on developing the future of the clubs in 5M3! Invite a friend or family member to a club meeting...or simply share the details of your club with your co-workers. Spreading the word is key. Once people understand how important Lions are to our rural communities, they will want to join and support our mission of service! Have a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! I look forward to seeing you all in Marshall in 2015!

With a poster pulling open the curtain to illuminate a colorful world of love among nations, Murray County Central sixth-grader Josie Harms won this year's Lions District 5M3 Peace Poster Contest. Harms, from Slayton, also won the local Hadley Lions Club contest. The runner-up honor was given to Ezekial R. Conway of Heron Lake, a Windom Area sixth-grader whose collage of symbols spoke to a world filled with peace, love and understanding. Other district finalists competed after winning local contests sponsored by the New Ulm, Milroy, Tracy, Lakefield/Jackson and Fairmont Lions Clubs. Harms' poster will now compete at the multiple district level, and 5M3's top two posters will be recognized at the Mid-Winter Convention.

We are nearing the middle of the Lions year
and getting closer to the upcoming Midwinter Convention. To the best of my knowledge,
we still don’t have anyone who has committed to running for 2VDG for next year. If anyone is interested, please contact
DG David or PDG Wayne Radloff. We can provide more information about what is needed to do the job. I would encourage
anyone interested either in running this year or thinking about it in the future to contact me
and I can give you information about it.
I would also like to encourage all Lions to
consider attending the MD5M Lions
Leadership Institute which will be held in
April in Mahnoman. It is a tremendous
learning experience. You will learn a lot of
skills that will help you not only in Lions but
in your jobs, your community and personally.
Please consider attending. By the time this
newsletter comes out, it will be past the due
date for applications. That said, many
districts don’t get all slots filled so they will
take applications from other districts to fill
the slots. There is still a good chance to get
into the training if you are interested.

The Lions International Trading Pin Club (LITPC) is now awarding an annual $2,500 Youth Scholarship to a graduating senior who is the child/grandchild of a Lion, Lioness or a member of a Leo Club. The most important aspect of the Youth Scholarship Program is to help a young person pursue his/her education and follow their dreams. The LITPC takes great pride in fulfilling the motto of Lions Club International, “We Serve”. During the SightFirst II Campaign, the pin traders contributed $144,000 (US) to LCIF. Our Scholarship Program is another example of the pin trader’s Slogan, “Lions First”. Selection of the scholarship recipient will be based on academic achievement, an essay stating the student’s goals, a statement of reason(s) for applying and an overview of work, community and school service, and letters of recommendation. Applications and supporting documentation are to be completed and submitted to the pin trading club scholarship chairman named below by March 1, 2015. Three (3) $2,500 Youth Scholarships have been awarded so far. The first recipient was a Leo from Pennsylvania in 2012. A Leo from Virginia was awarded the second Youth Scholarship in 2013. The third recipient was a graduate from Iowa in 2014. Please have applicants begin checking the LITPC website for the application form. district. 2. Secure the endorsement of his/her club or a majority of the club’s in his/her district. 3. Have served or will have served at the time he/she takes office as second vice district governor: A. As President of a Lions Club for a full term or major portion thereof, and a member of the board
of directors of a Lions Club for no less than two(2) additional years; and B. As zone chairperson or region chairperson or cabinet secretary and/or treasurer for a full term

PURPOSE: To honor those Lion & Lioness members of character and substance who have demonstrated the highest level of commitment and dedication to the efforts of their club, district or multiple district and the motto of our association, “We Serve”.
CRITERIA: A Candidate may be a Lion or Lioness, must have been a member in good standing for at least 15 years, be at least two (2) years removed from the Council of Governors if a PDG, should have qualifications above and beyond the call of duty including social and human endeavors, and he/she should be of good moral character and have a good reputation in his/her community. A nominee must be a member in good standing of a Lions or Lioness Club in MD5M at the time of their death.
AWARD: There will be a maximum of one (1) recipient of the MD5M Hall of Fame Award per district, inducted into the MD5M Hall of Fame each year. The award may be presented posthumously.
The MD5M Hall of Fame award recipients are to be inducted into the Hall of Fame at the annual MD5M Multiple District Convention during the Saturday noon luncheon.
MD5M Hall of Fame recipients will receive a MD5M Hall of Fame award plaque and a Hall of Fame lapel pin in recognition of their induction in the MD5M Hall of Fame. In addition, a complete listing of all MD5M Hall of Fame recipients will appear in the annual MD5M directory and a perpetual plaque, with the names of all the inductees and the year of their induction inscribed thereon, will be kept in a prominent place in the MD5M office, when available.
PROCESS: A candidate may be sponsored by any Lion, Lioness, Lions Club, Lioness Club, Zone or District. There will be a nomination fee of $150.00 per each candidate nominated. The nomination fee will be returned to those sponsors whose candidates are not elected for induction into the MD5M Hall of Fame. The nomination fee for those selected for induction will be sent to MD5M and will be used to offset the cost of the award process, plaques and pin.
NOMINATIONS, INCLUDING THE NOMINATION FEE, MUST BE RECEIVED BY THE DISTRICT GOVERNOR AT LEAST 30 DAYS PRIOR TO THE DISTRICT’S MID WINTER CONVENTION.

The Al Jensen Award is in memory of PCC Alvin “Al” Jensen, a Lion who was a caring, effective, dedicated
but quiet leader. He was a man who taught by word and example. Lion Al Jensen had a deep love for what
Lionism meant and he did everything he could to share that love with others. Lion Al died of cancer in 1995.
This award is given at the MD5M Multiple Convention. This award for Lion’s members within two
categories “under 5 years of membership” or “over 5 years of membership”. This form is also located on the

WHICH AWARD CAN YOU GIVE? Contact your 5M3 District Chairman to obtain your clubs donation status to District Charities
so you can honor a club member.
Hall of Fame Award– Each District can award 1 per year. An application has be submitted to the DG in advance
of the convention and is voted on at the business meeting. The winner is announced and awarded at the MD5M
Convention in Bloomington. Do you have a member who qualifies for this award? If so, go to our 5M3 website–
Forms. Submit them before February 1, 2015 to DG David.
Al Jensen Award– This is an MD5M award that is given at the MD5M Multiple Convention in Bloomington on
April 18th. Only 2 are given in the Minnesota, Manitoba & NW Ontario area. Criteria for this award is listed at
the 5M3 website under Forms.
MD5M Diabetes Dream Catcher Award– An accumulative donation of $1,000 to the Diabetes Foundation or
Camp Needlepoint or any other donation related to Diabetes will merit qualifications for an award. You need to
track your own club activity in this area and notify Lion Mary Snobl at [email protected] (507-629-4734) OR
Lion Bob Schirlinger at [email protected] (507-354-8940) to acquire the award.
Melvin Jones Fellowships– highest award that can be received by a Lion is the Melvin Jones Fellow (MJF). It was established in 1973 as a means to provide funds to Lions Clubs International (LCI) and also to establish the
highest form of recognition for dedication and humanitarian service. Today, the MJF provide 70% of the funds
provided for the LCI humanitarian programs such as relief to victims of earthquakes, tornados, hurricanes, etc. The
fellowship is obtained for US $1000, and may be given to men or women , not necessarily Lions, in recognition for
their service. The recipient receives an inscribed plaque and lapel pin. Financing needs to be completed within a
five year period with a minimum of $100 in any one year. For those who have a MJF, a Progressive MJF (PMJF)
is available for each additional $1000 with the recipient receiving a lapel pin with a “level” gemstone. This award
can be presented at a club meeting or at our 5M3 Mid Winter Convention. More information regarding this award

Lions MD5M Hearing Foundation Award– The MD5M Hearing Foundation gives the Fellowship award for
$1,000. This can be an accumulative donation to achieve the $1,000 goal. Contact PDG Wayne Radloff at

Leader Dogs Founders Tribute– This program allows clubs to honor an individual club member or event sponsor

Can Do Canines- “Top Dog” Award can be given to any club, member or non Lion’s member with a $500.

Helen Keller Award– are given to honor those who have distinguished themselves within your Lions Club for
outstanding commitment or service to your club or community. This is an excellent way to honor a Lion, Lioness,
non-Lion individual, business, or organization. A $1,000 donation to the Minnesota Lions Vision Foundation (for
the MN Lions Eye Bank, Lions Children’s Eye Clinic, the MAC Center, the Fund to Prevent Blindness in Infants
and Children, or other Vision Foundation projects) allows the donor to present a Helen Keller Award. The award
recipient receives a beautiful plaque and pin, and the recipient’s name is displayed on the Helen Keller board in the
University of Minnesota Eye Clinic. Both the donor and the recipient have the satisfaction of supporting
worthwhile Lions projects. Established in 1992, more the 2000 Helen Keller Awards have now been bestowed on

Project New Hope– Awards to individuals and clubs is a thank you for your generosity and caring for our veterans
and their families. The awards look much like a military ribbon that would be worn on a uniform. Most have put
them on club vests or jackets. We also have a PNH pin for a donation of $25. The ribbon awards are red, white
and blue ribbon with a rectangular medal that says Project New Hope. Levels of the award are Gold medal at
$300., Blue medal at $600. and Red medal at $1200. Black & White ribbon with red medal & our dog tag symbol

HEALTH PROJECT (MNOHP)
In my travels with the staff of the
MNOHP, this has been the knowledge
I have gained in listening to community
stakeholders who want to improve the health of
children’s teeth.
THE MOUTH IS PART OF THE BODY, TOO.
Every child should have the opportunity to be safe and
healthy.
We have to start working with caregivers where we
meet them.
Don’t create something new, work within the current
systems to build parenting skills.
Engage direct caregiver with preventive education to
internalize parenting skills.
Encourage direct care giver to be empowered to ask
about their child’s oral health care while being seen by
their medical provider(s).
In 2005, CDC Declaration: “water fluoridation most
cost effective Public Health measure of the 20th
century.”
In Minnesota, 99% of the communities contain
fluoride in their water which keeps teeth from
developing cavities. Individual well water can be
tested by your local health department for fluoride
content and other minerals.
Most bottled water brands have no fluoride.
75% of the Dentists Practicing in South
western Minnesota are 55 years or older.
Reimbursement rates are at greater
levels for Metro Dentists compared
to Rural Dentists. The focus is increase access, increase awareness, and
educational materials. The MNOHP is planning to do an
awareness program in February for National Oral Health
Month. The MNOHP will start meeting with stakeholders
in the Counties of Brown, Martin, Cottonwood, Jackson,
and Watonwan. The MNOHP is scheduled to do
presentations at the District 5M2, 5M3 and 5M4 2015
Mid-Winter Conventions.

Our assistance dogs fetch amazing things
Merry Christmas to all Lions out there in 5M3
This month I am forwarding a letter from PDI Brian Sheehan that he has written on behalf of
Can-Do-Canines. As we are celebrating our 25th year of providing service dogs (absolutely free) to recipients with
disabilities. We have made great strides with the 5 different assistance dogs we provide.
Hearing dogs, Mobility assist dogs, Seizure assist dogs, Diabetic assist dogs, and Autistic assist dogs. We have a
waiting list of about 180 recipients who are waiting for their assistance dogs. We have a donor who will match
funds up to $20,000 till the end of the month. So if it is in your budget to help us out we can double our donations if
we donate before the end of the month.

Dear Fellow Lions, Lioness and Leos, I am writing to invite you to learn more about one of our Multiple District 5M projects, Can Do Canines. I have
watched them grow over the years, visited their facility, and met some graduates and their assistance dogs. I can
fully endorse them as a worthy charity. Lions clubs have supported this organization since 1989 and they became an official Multiple Project in 1997.
More than 560 clubs in our multiple have made donations to Can Do Canines. Clubs in the multiple joined forces
with an LCIF grant in 2011, raising $150,000 to add a wing of kennels to their facility. Lions are behind them,
100%. This year, Can Do Canines is celebrating 25 years of service to our community, placing assistance dogs with
people who have disabilities, free of charge.
They have graduated more than 470 assistance dog teams and plan to graduate 46 new teams in 2015.

Years of Service"or "So Many Stories," both of which share interviews with the people whose lives have been
changed.
I am so sure you will agree that Can Do Canines is of special interest that I am asking them to send you their

We can’t do the work that we do to help others with hearing problems without the donations from the individual Lions Clubs. Thank you for your support in the past. Membership!
Win Some, Lose Some This month I thought I would relate
a real story on Membership. Our club
Membership chair was relating about the membership
drives historically held in October. This year our club
thought it would be awesome to remember when the
club had a special night to invite perspective members
in for fellowship. Our International Lions President was
encouraging clubs to have a membership effort in
October. In September we formed a committee to work
on this project. We set a date for the 3rd week in
October to avoid fall harvest for our farming
community. We set a time of 7 p.m. to reduce non-
participation for those working. We encouraged
potential members to bring the family and the open
house was for only 1.5 hours so kids could get home by
9 p.m. We had activities planned for the kids as well.
Next we developed a list of perspective members. As a
result we mailed out over 60 invitations.
The day came, we had 10 members show up to
welcome any potential members. We had refreshments
ready, meat & cheese platters waiting, waiting,
waiting…
Not one potential member showed up. Not one!
What went wrong we asked ourselves? What could
we have done to improve our results?
1. As it turned out, fall harvest was not completed.
Several names on our list are farmers or
potential members associated with farming.
2. Critical– We did not follow-up the written
invitation with a personal call from a member
who was familiar with those invited.
3. Personal contact is the key. “Just Ask” is a very
real reason why people join Lions, because they
were asked.
4. Make an effort to bring a potential member to
the meeting or event.
Although we gained 0 members for our effort, the
club learned a valuable lesson on Membership. We
can’t expect people in this day and age to walk in when
invited. We need to make more of an effort.
Our 10 members had a nice visit, enjoyed the snacks
and refreshments while learning a valuable lesson. We
win some and lose some in this Membership arena.
