Overview of Jamaica Bay Jamaica Bay is designated for primary contact
and it’s tributaries are designated for secondary contact
Water quality in Jamaica Bay is better than its been in 100 years and supports a wide variety of wildlife but there are still impairments:
Waters tend to be eutrophic Seasonal low DO levels
These water quality impairments are linked to high nutrient loadings in conjunction with man-made physical alterations
DEP is upgrading all for of it’s WWTP that discharge into Jamaica Bay for Step Feed BNR
Loss of the marsh islands is another critical issue within Jamaica Bay
DEP has partnered with ACOE to restore many of these marsh islands ($13M funded)

Historical Water Quality
Additional Water Quality Studies
In 1995/96 DEP conducted comprehensive water quality and ecological studies to calibrate JEM
Subsequent comprehensive water quality, ecological, and finfish studies were conducted in 2005/2006
Ongoing Jamaica Bay Science & Resiliency Institute will be refining JEM
DEP to conduct a comprehensive Post Construction Monitoring Plan from 2016 thru 2019
