Dear Friends of Holy Family School,
Now in its 79th year, Holy Family School continues to serve the needs of our community by preparing leaders and faithful citizens for the 21st Century. Today Holy Family School serves a near capacity 311 students in grades K-8. Our well-rounded program—in addition to providing a solid academic and faith-formation core—offers music, technology, the arts, Spanish, and athletics, to name just a few. Our staff includes classroom teachers, aides, resource specialist, school nurses, technology and library technicians, and counselor. We have a strong staff to student ratio of about 1:8.
This Annual Report reflects our financial and philanthropic success, as well as challenges for the future. It chronicles the positive changes that have taken place in our school, as well as our efforts to keep Holy Family affordable to all interested members of our parish community. It is a primary goal of Holy Family School to be good stewards whose financial efforts are focused solely on the success of our students; spiritually, academically and emotionally.
This past year saw major progress in different areas. In August 2016 a new Outdoor Learning Center (OLC) was completed. The OLC includes new play structures, a revamped lunch area, and new landscaping. At the same time, new gates and fences were installed to provide additional safety measures for students and staff. These projects were completed with the significant help of our parish leadership and members of our school and parish community.
As I move through my fourth year as Principal at Holy Family School, I want to express my sincere thanks and appreciation to each of you for helping to strengthen our school community through your continued dedication and support. I have seen our school grow in many ways during this time, and I am excited for our future.
The best is yet to come for Holy Family School!
In Christ,
Frank Montejano, Ed.D.Principal

perspective
Holy Family School (HFS)
is a gift to our children
and our family. It is a
loving community of
households looking to
raise their children in a
nurturing environment that
helps children grow into
well-rounded responsible
young adults. The past
graduates I have had the
privilege to know have
been amazing young
people and I am looking
forward to my children
graduating with the same
kindness, intelligence, and
self-possession. Through
our participation at HFS
we have been blessed to
develop lasting friendships
with other Catholic families
in the community.

Dear Holy Family Parents and Friends,
On behalf of the Holy Family School Board, I am pleased to share with you our 2015-16 Annual Report. As you will see, our school continues to evolve and grow. Paramount to our continued success is the support from this incredible community. Our parents, teachers, parishioners, friends and families have generously contributed their time, talent and resources to make our school an outstanding academic institution.
We continue to strive for scholastic excellence in an environment that nurtures the faith formation of every individual. Service learning is integrated into our curriculum, creating empathy, tolerance and action in our students. At our core is the belief that every child can be a difference maker in the world and the success of our graduates continues to affirm the value of a Holy Family education.
Parents and donors are critical to our continued progress. The Parent Guild fundraisers, combined with our annual Legacy of Learning campaign, are vital to sustaining the excellent programs offered. We also strive to provide an education that is financially accessible to all members of the parish community and have increased funding efforts to support scholarships and financial aide for qualifying families.
Thank you to our faculty and staff who enable us to achieve and flourish. It is our continued objective to employ, train and retain highly engaged and capable educators who are vested in the next generation. Dr. Montejano has increased professional development opportunities and technology advancements continue to be integrated into the curriculum, fostering the development of well-rounded, independent, and responsible students. I would like to personally thank the School Board for their unrelenting commitment to our goals. We are making definitive progress towards achieving the objectives laid out in in our 2015-2020 Five-Year Strategic Plan.
Thank you for believing in the mission of Holy Family School. It is uniquely special to be educated in an environment that celebrates our profession of faith, and it has been my pleasure to serve as board President for the past three years.
Sincerely,
Connie HardingPresident, Holy Family School Board Grace ‘07, Joe ‘10 and Mary ‘12

our mission stAtementThe mission of Holy Family School is to instill Christian values and Catholic principles in students through the Gospel message of Jesus. We foster and nurture the development of the whole child and strive to achieve educational excellence. We are guided in faith and principle by our Schoolwide Learning Expectations, and we work toward enabling our students to grow and be successful in attaining them.
mission stAtement & philosophy
One of the greatest things about Holy Family is the value placed on experiences outside of the classroom. I was involved in activities such as athletics, the musical production, helping at the Giving Bank, student ambassadors, altar serving and mock trial – all of which gave me the opportunity to build on my confidence and leadership skills while at the time providing me with a well-rounded educational experience to prepare me for high school. Everyone’s experience at Holy Family is unique because there are so many different ways to learn both academically and spiritually in and outside of the classroom.
– Caitlin Sigler, Holy Family Class of 2012
our philosophyHoly Family students are nourished by liturgical and sacramental life in the environment of a faith community, where service, respect and concern for others are demonstrated. In striving for academic excellence, we at Holy Family School take individual needs into account. Our students are encouraged to be self-directed. In addition, good citizenship, physical well-being, Catholic doctrine and tradition are integrated into the curriculum.
Mindful that parents are the prime educators, we at Holy Family School support and encourage parental responsibility in helping students to become involved Christians. Our purpose is to develop the Catholic faith in the present generation of children, and through them, to touch future generations. The development of the whole child is the essence of our teaching mission at Holy Family School.
Integrating a love of learning with Catholic beliefs and values that are centered in the Spirit, our students are instilled with a vision of hope.

students helping hAnds Each year, fifth grade students have the opportunity to participate in weekly art lessons with seniors from the community to raise funds for a cause. This program is known as “Ministry to the Elderly” Intergenerational Art Program. The collaborative art pieces created by the students and seniors are auctioned off in April at an annual Coffee Shop Poetry Event. All proceeds from the Coffee Shop are donated to a nonprofit organization of the class’ choosing.
Through a collaborative process the students determine one organization that is solving a current world problem. Selecting the foundation involves students identifying the top five things that break their hearts in the world, researching nonprofit organizations, and finally voting for the organization
that makes a tremendous difference. Past foundations have included Jane
Goodall’s Roots and Shoots Foundation and Charity: Water. The Roots and
Shoots Foundation was so impacted by the passion and commitment of
the Holy Family Students, that Jane Goodall herself came to speak to our
students about their ability to make the world a better place!
This past year, the fifth grade raised over $4,000 for the Make-A-Wish
Foundation. Fifth graders were deeply touched by the impact of their
gift when a South Pasadena high school student, struggling with Cystic
Fibrosis, came to share his incredible opportunity at having a wish granted
by the Make-A-Wish Foundation. We are proud of our students’ efforts to
significantly transform our greater community through their loving actions.
The 2nd Annual Holy Family Connolly Golf Classic was a great success! 130 eager participants gathered at Brookside Golf Course to play the scramble format, allowing golfers of all skill levels to participate and have fun. The day wrapped up with a festive BBQ on the Brookside Patio, and the raffle and silent auction raised additional funds for our Holy Family Playground Project and Scholarship efforts.
We are thankful to our generous sponsors, dedicated golf committee and volunteers who stepped up in support of the school. We look forward to the Connolly Golf Classic becoming a tradition and community builder for years to come. What a great day for Holy Family School! See you next year at the 3rd Annual Connolly Golf Classic! Look for updated information in the bulletin.

drAmAOver the past decade, we have seen how participation in theatre can really touch a child’s life. A girl, once too shy to speak in front of her class, finally finds her voice. A boy, struggling to fit in, takes the lead and sings a solo. Small moments of victory coalesce into a wonderful experience in our Drama Program. With the support of many, we can proudly say we continue to live the Holy Family School Mission and foster and nurture the development of the whole child. Over $10,000 was raised in 2015-16 to enhance the learning experience of all the students involved with the play.
pArent guild An active and engaged Parent Guild greatly contributes to the operations of Holy Family School every year. Parent Guild fundraisers include a fall Christmas Tree Sale and spring Jog-a-Thon. These successful fundraisers contributed over $40,000 to the school operating budget in 2015-16. We are truly grateful for our dedicated Parent Guild leadership and school-wide participation from families. A very special thank you to Vice President of Fundraising, Jill Sigler, as well as Christmas Tree Sale chairs, Aimee Gutierrez and Claudia Perez, and Jog-a-Thon chairs Jackie Hoshek and Heather Timmons. Together we make a difference!
scripScrip is a fundraising program that allows participating merchants to contribute a percentage of family purchases to the school. Families participate by purchasing scrip in the form of gift cards either online with ShopWithScrip.com, at the Pastoral Center, or via eScrip by registering membership and payment cards online with certain grocery and department stores. Although Scrip is a parish-wide fundraiser, the profits go directly into the school’s annual operating budget. This past year, Scrip raised $48,000 for Holy Family School.

mAteriAl donAtions Throughout the year, Holy Family Church and School sponsor special drives for specific ministries, requesting items such as food, clothing, and other gently used items. We greatly appreciate these material donations, which are quickly distributed to needy individuals and families. For more information about donating material goods, please contact the Giving Bank at 626-403-6141.

This special opportunity keeps Katherine’s dream of attending Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy alive in the hearts of the young women it supports.
finAnciAl givingMail Campaigns Throughout the year families and alumni will receive annual campaign mailers to support specific causes. These funds enable Holy Family to grow scholastically and care for our Education Center. By supporting these funds, you are ensuring the legacy of educational programs at Holy Family.
online giving Online giving is the quickest and most convenient way to give. Click the “Support HFS” tab on the school website http://school.holyfamily.org and a donation page will appear that will guide you through the process. You can make a one-time gift or enroll in monthly or quarterly Automatic Giving. All information is secure and handled through Vanco, a donor-managed payment provider. For questions about giving to Holy Family School, please contact Shannon Porter at 626-403-6130.
Giving happens all year long, and is a deeply personal and sincere expression of authentic discipleship. Tuition and educational fees only cover 89% of Holy Family School’s operating budget. This gap is aided by a generous parish contribution as well as the fundraising efforts listed in this report. As grateful Stewards, we realize that all we are and all we have is a gift. Through your continued grace, gratitude and generosity we continue to make Holy Family a better place.
