programs and services. Clients have access to a variety

of medical and professional services and participate in

an individualized program plan (IPP) to identify

individual needs and abilities.

The goal of programs and activities is to enhance care,

independence, health, social and daily living skills, and

learning.

KRRC employs some 600 full and part time

About the Apple Tree Foundation

and Kings Regional Rehabilitation Centre

The Apple Tree

Foundation

(ATF) was

incorporated in

1994 as a

fundraising arm

of Kings Regional

Rehabilitation

Centre (KRRC).

ATF is a registered public Foundation in

accordance with sub-section 140.1 (1) of the

Income Tax Act.

The Foundation is led by a 15-member

volunteer Board of Directors made up of

members from the Community, Staff and Kings

Regional Rehabilitation Centre Board of

Directors. Together they work on sub-

committees to plan events and a variety of

fundraising and profile building activities.

KRRC receives government funding through

the Department of Community Services; monies

raised through ATF support special projects and

programs that might not otherwise be possible.

It has been my pleasure to serve in the role of Chair of the Apple Tree Foundation this past year since

taking over the office from Jeanne Douglas. The Foundation has been fortunate to have Jeanne remain

on the Board Executive to help guide our work forward through 2016.

Fundraising efforts present many challenges, especially in today’s struggling economic climate where

worthy charitable causes compete for financial support.

In 2015, we were fortunate to again collaborate with Pete Luckett in hosting a Rock, Blues and Green

Shoes event at Luckett Vineyards in Grand Pre in August. The evening was filled with wonderful food

and music. Earlier in the month the annual Apple Tree Golf Classic took place at Berwick Heights.

This was the 21st year for our long-running tournament which drew 31 teams. These were our two

largest events, and together they netted over $23,000.

This spring we held an Easter Lobster Lotto with ticket sales netting over $4,100. The 300 pounds of

live lobster for this fundraiser was generously donated by a fishing family of a KRRC client.

Aside from hands-on fundraising, we also took the opportunity to promote our work in the community

at public events and displays. The Foundation participated in the Annapolis Valley Apple Blossom

Festival Grand Street Parade, hosted a booth at the Tools for Life Conference and Exhibit and at a

SipChat Connect (SCC) Business Mixer. All provided a chance to converse with non-profits,

businesses, community leaders and citizens and raise the Foundation’s visibility.

One of the highlights for our Board in the summer of 2015 was the official opening of the new KRRC

Greenhouse with a ribbon cutting, speeches, music, refreshments and of course beautiful flowers. It

was rewarding for the Foundation to see this project, which began with our $50,000 contribution three

years ago, come to fruition.

I invite you to browse through this Annual Report to see photos from the past year, and read more

about our events and projects.

In closing I want to acknowledge all the Foundation Directors who put time and energy into our

initiatives this year, and also express appreciation to our administrative office support staff who

oversee day-to-day operations of the Board. A special thanks as well to KRRC staff and community

volunteers, and to our donors – big and small – whose support enables us to enrich the lives of clients

residing at Kings Regional Rehabilitation Centre.

Kind Regards,

F. Wayne Morgan, ATF Chair for 2015-2016

Apple Tree Golf Classic trophy to Tournament

winning team TKO.

Golfers:

Thirty-one teams participated in

the 21st Annual Apple Tree Golf

Classic in August 2015.

The 124 golfers enjoyed a pleasant

day on the course at Berwick

Heights, followed by a chicken

BBQ meal, silent and live auctions

and trophy presentation.

TKO, the Town of Kentville, was

the overall tournament winner.

In the new First Responders

Category, the winner was Ladder

41, Waterville & District

Volunteer Fire Department.

The long-running tournament is

the Foundation’s major fundraiser,

which this year netted $16,994.

Volunteers:

The tournament would not be

possible without the support of

dedicated volunteers. Emcee for

the event was Rod Reeves and

auctioneer was George Moody.

The Golf Tournament Planning

Committee consisted of Board,

KRRC staff and community

volunteers led by long-time Chair,

Darrell Cook.

Rock, Blues & Green Shoes

Another successful Rock, Blues & Green Shoes dinner and

dance was hosted at Luckett Vineyards in August 2015.

KRRC’s client band, The Beat, opened

for the group Radioland, providing a lively evening of music.

Some 100 guests dined on

Prime Rib and Pork Loin,

along with colorful salads, grilled

veggies, tasty dessert, and also

enjoyed Luckett Wines.

Sincere thanks are extended to

Pete Luckett and his staff and

to Jeanne Douglas who was the

committee lead for this event and handled the majority of ticket sales.

The Dinner netted $6,620.

5-K Run / Walk

The second annual Apple Tree Foundation 5 K Run / Walk in April 2015 drew some 40 participants. This fun

event continues to grow with runners and walkers of all ages and abilities. Special thanks to Run Committee

Chair Bernie Tracey. The Run was sponsored by The Running Room, with local community sponsorship from

Merry Maids, Family 1st Medical, Morse Farm Ltd, Unwind Massage Therapy and Byers Refrigeration.

The event netted $1,125.

Lobster Lotto

The 2016 Lobster Lotto draw was held at a new time this year, just prior to the

Easter weekend. Three hundred pounds of live lobster was generously donated

by the Malone Family. There were 15 draws of 20 pounds of lobster each.

Thanks are extended to all staff, directors and volunteers who helped sell some

430 tickets for this fundraiser which netted $4,184. Kudos to ATF Board

member Bob Stewart who sold 120 of the tickets!

After several years of funding larger projects (Greenhouse, Wheelchair accessible vans and Learning Centre

upgrades) the Foundation committed funds to five smaller scale projects in 2015-2016 that will benefit both

individual clients and overall program areas.

The Foundation provided $50,000 in initial funding to set up the 30 X 72 foot structure behind the Centre. The

process involved site approvals and design modifications over the next two years, but the project came together in

May when the greenhouse began operations. “It’s wonderful to see it become a reality,” said KRRC CEO Joe

Haverstock. Health and Wellness Minister and Kings West MLA Hon. Leo Glavine who attended the opening to

tour the greenhouse and purchase a plant said, “This is another creative development for KRRC …This site continues

to be regarded for its outstanding work. I commend the staff and residents and all who have made it possible.”

On a sunny, summer day in July KRRC officially opened its new greenhouse with

music, cake, speeches, tours and an official ribbon cutting. “This is a terrific day,”

said Jeanne Douglas, outgoing Chair of the Apple Tree Foundation, in her greetings to

clients, staff, Board members, guests and public who came to celebrate. Jeanne noted

it was 2012 when staff members Charles Niesink and Robbie Hiltz first approached

the Foundation with a proposal to develop a greenhouse operation as a vocational

opportunity and therapeutic support for clients.

While the main goal of the Foundation is to fundraise, it is also

important to network in the community, educating the public about

the work of the Foundation and the needs of individuals with

disabilities served by Kings Regional Rehabilitation Centre. Events

included Sipchat Connect’s (SCC), The Big One, a business mixer

in Windsor; the 10th

Annual Tools for Life Conference & Exhibit in

Greenwich; and the Grand Street Parade at the Annapolis Valley

Apple Blossom Festival in Kentville. Two Board Members

also participated in event planning workshops at NSCC

Kingstec Campus.

KRRC Mission Statement
