Page 4: 2015-2016 ACADEMIC YEAR APRIL 25, 2016 OzU Is Among The …€¦ · Our Çekmeköy Campus expands further with its three new buildings. We take immense pride in our students’ achievements

As we forge ahead with our future plans, I welcome all new colleagues that have recently joined the OzU family and wish success to all our students and new colleagues.

ACCOLADES and ACCOMPLISHMENTS Highly coveted faculty and student accomplishments that

made us extremely proud during the 2014-2015 academic year have continued into the 2015-2016 academic year. I am delighted to see that our faculty, students and staff make real impacts on their disciplines and on the communities we serve.

In particular, I would like to share with you our two most re-cent international recognitions below, highlighting our unique, pioneering efforts in sustainability.

• The GreenMetric World University Ranking: Launched to assess the world’s greenest universities based on their com-mitment to “sustainable development” and “environmental protection” in six main categories, the ranking included over 400 universities in its assessment this year. Özyeğin University ranked 170th in the overall ranking, and first among Turkish foundation universities. We were also ranked first among all Turkish universities in the Energy and Climate Change catego-ry. This is a fitting affirmation of our continuing efforts towards becoming one of the most active, energy efficient and environ-mentally friendly universities and I find this achievement highly significant as it sets OzU as a role model for other universities.

• International Sustainable Campus Network (ISCN): Our University was among the 19 universities and the only university from Turkey included in the international sustain-able campus best practices annual report of the International Sustainable Campus Network (ISCN) and Global University Leader Forum (GULF), which is the academic platform of World Economic Forum. Our Sectoral Education program was showcased as one of the best examples of how universities are developing their students’ sustainability skills and building their capacities in collaboration with corporate partners. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the managing team of our Sectoral Education program for taking our program to new heights with their dedicated work, to all instructors and organi-

zations for making valuable contributions to course offerings, and to all our students for internalizing our program’s unique philosophy and putting their best efforts towards its success. Thanks to our Sectoral Education program, our university stood out in the campus best practices report as the only university from Turkey among the world’s most prestigious universities. Our Sectoral Education program is our collective work, and this success is the result of our efforts collectively.

We owe these most recent international recognitions as well as numerous others received to-date, without a doubt, to scientific research conducted by our distinguished faculty. I would like to extend my most heartfelt congratulations to all of you.

In terms of sponsored research activities, we surpassed the 50 M TL mark by the end of 2015. During the fiscal year of 2015 alone, our Technology Transfer Office (TTO) managed all operations for 68 new sponsored research projects totally 15.2 M TL. A much deserved and heartfelt thanks to our TTO for their dedicated work.

What thrills us as much as our faculty’s highly-acclaimed research is to witness each day that these studies are also in-extricably blended into our academic education and practices, adding a unique richness to the academic wherewithal of our students. In fact, one of the defining and differentiating attrib-utes of Ozyegin University is our focus on education as a jour-ney of self-discovery and personal fulfillment. Our unique and comprehensive personal development programs are designed to ensure that this journey allows OzU students to find out who they are and what talents they have, and who they can be and want to be as responsible citizens in their professional and civic communities. It is, therefore, a source of pride to us to have the spotlight turned on the international and national recognitions and achievements of our students who capitalize on not only our world-class education but on our personal development opportunities to fulfill their dreams. Please join me in congrat-ulating each and every one of our past and present students highlighted in these pages for their personal accomplishments and for the recognition they bring to OzU in fields ranging from robotics to technical and graphic design, from law to finance

and marketing, from dance to fencing and swimming.

NEW APPOINTMENTS I am very pleased to announce the appointment of As-

sociate Prof. Güray Erkol as our first Dean of Students, effec-tive February 2016. Dr. Erkol is an accomplished researcher, dedicated teacher and mentor and a true ally of students. I am confident that he is going to fulfill the responsibilities of this important role with utmost due diligence. In his new position, Dr. Erkol reports directly to the Rector and is responsible for the Psychological Development, Social Development and Student Life Office departments. I wish Dr. Erkal success in his new posi-tion and look forward to working with him towards the goal of offering our students a high-quality campus life and expanding our personal development opportunities to be even further in line with OzU’s philosophy. I am also confident that our stu-dents, faculty and staff will support Dr. Erkol by all means pos-sible in this important role.

On the administrative side, three new members joined our management team in the 2015-2016 academic year: Our new Corporate Communications Director, Mrs. Günfer Haklı, our In-formation Systems Director, Mr. Ünsal Yavuz, and our Accom-modation Services Manager, Mr. Baran Demir. Please join me in extending a warm welcome to those who have recently joined our OzU family and in wishing them continued success in their new positions.

NEW INITIATIVES • Several committees and advisory boards played an instru-

mental role as shared governance bodies during our institu-tionalization efforts, representing the needs and concerns of various OzU constituents and participating in campus deci-sion-making. Please join me in thanking the committees and advisory boards highlighted below for their invaluable contri-butions to University governance and to our institutionaliza-tion efforts.

Campus Services Advisory Board: Chaired by Dr. Ba-

In addition to our world-class academic education, we offer opportunities to our students to discover who they are, develop their talents, set new goals and own their responsibilities in their communities. In doing so, we help them pave the way of success.

har Başım Doğan, a member of our Faculty of Engineering , the Board is made up of representatives from Administrative Services and the Student Union as well as at least one repre-sentative from each academic unit. The board is responsible for addressing any issues pertaining to campus services, rec-ommending solutions, and submitting reports to the Rector’s Office when required. The board actively contributes to the solution of a variety of on-campus issues. These include but are not limited to any issue pertaining to transportation, parking lots, our on-campus animal friends, the hygiene and cleanli-ness of classrooms and shared spaces, and the dining hall.

Student Clubs and Events Commission: Working closely with the Social Activities Coordinator, the SCAC meets regularly to evaluate new club applications as well as to counsel clubs and individual club members about special requests. Chaired by Prof. Korkut Kanadoglu, a member of our Faculty of Law, the members of the SCAC include the following faculty members: Prof. Dr. Saadet Erbay from the Faculty of Engineering, Associ-ate Prof. Murat Şahin from the Faculty of Architecture and De-sign, and Mr. Mehmet Demir from the School of Languages.

Center for Learning and Teaching Excellence (CLTE): Initiated by five faculty members; Ms. Nergis Akbay from the School of Languages, Dr. Sinem Atakan from the Faculty of Business, Associate Prof. Güray Erkol from the Faculty of Engi-neering, Ms. Bahar Hasırcı from the School of Languages, and Luis Martin-Domingo from the School of Aviation; the CLTE is designated as a catalyst for a university-wide dialogue to foster a shared vision of teaching excellence at OzU and to advance scholarly activities related to teaching and learning.

Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP): ERP is a major sys-tem-wide undertaking which launched in May 2015 and went live successfully on January 4th, 2016. This is no small accom-plishment and I am grateful to our ERP team - more affection-ately known as the VOLTRAN – for their meticulous planning as well as tireless participation in countless hours of meetings, training and testing. Thank you VOLTRAN!

Özyeğin University Scholarship Program for Equal Op-portunities in Education: In line with our founding principles and as part of our continuing efforts to make our world class education accessible to successful students from all economic backgrounds, a new scholarship program was launched, start-ing with this year’s incoming students. The first student cohort of the Equal Opportunity in Education Scholarship Program consists of 28 students who will have 50% of their tuition and board covered by 24 different institutional donors. Please al-low me to express my sincerest gratitude to our first donors for serving as role models with their generosity and join me in thanking them for their invaluable support to our new scholar-ship program.

Accreditation Applications: Four of our academic units have initiated their respective accreditation processes follow-ing a comprehensive assessment of their offerings, accompa-nied by notable curriculum redevelopments. These include: an AACSB application of the Faculty of Business, aFaculty of Engineering application to MÜDEK, a TPD Application from our Psychology program, and an EAQUALS application submit-ted by our English Language Program. I am grateful to the respective Deans, and all members of our faculty and staff at each of these academic units for undertaking this important initiative, following it through various demanding stages, and submitting their applications as planned. Our Accreditation and Quality Assurance Team led by Ms. Yasemin Kilit deserves special thanks as well for the support they provided to each of the academic units throughout this process. I wish continued success to all of you...

The Strategic Planning Steering Committee (SPSC): A new and important initiative successfully launched last year was the establishment of our Strategic Planning Steering Com-mittee. Chaired by Prof. Muhittin Oral from the Faculty of Busi-ness, the SPSC was formed to provide direction and counsel throughout our strategic planning process, which is of utmost importance to me. The members of the committee include Prof. Dr. Pınar Mengüç, Head of the Mechanical Engineering De-partment, Prof. Dr. Alpay Er, Head of the Industrial Design De-partment, and Prof. Dr. Özlem Yenerer Çakmut from the Faculty of Law. SPSC’s fundamental and multi-phased responsibility is to initiate and supervise the process that will culminate in the preparation of our 2016-2021 Strategic Plan. The initial phase of this process involved assessment of our accomplishments to-date with reflection on our continuing and future responsi-

bilities in the realms of research, teaching, service, and sectoral transfer/engagement by each of our academic units. I want to take this opportunity to thank Prof. Dr. Muhittin Oral and the appointed members of the SPSC for their successful leadership and dedicated efforts throughout this process. Over the com-ing days, our strategic planning process will continue to evolve with the participation of different stakeholders. Further details about the discussions planned for the second phase of our strategic planning process will be announced later.

CAMPUS EXPANSION In addition to on-going campus improvements; which

include various modifications to our laboratories, classrooms, cafeteria, recreation areas and student club facilities, we are well into the planning for the development of 3 new buildings. These include a new academic building (AB4), an innovation space/lab, and a new dorm (Dorm 6).

After a long planning and official authorization process, our new AB4 building is finally becoming real. The building will be constructed on the parcel of land to the north of AB1 where our Faculty of Engineering is located. The primary focus will be to build classrooms, laboratories, studios, multi-functional spaces as well as teaching areas and faculty offices to meet the needs of our Faculty of Architecture and Design. The building is planned to have a 31,000 sqm usage area in total and will be connected to the AB1 building via an underground passage to also cater to the needs of the Faculty of Engineering. AB4 construction will start in July 2016 and will be completed by September 2017 unless there are unforeseeable events and circumstances beyond our control.

Our second project involves the location across from AB3. Initially planned as a cafeteria, this area will be re-designed as a different center of attraction in line with our University’s en-trepreneurial and innovative identity. We aim to transform this location into a supra-disciplinary, creative and collaborative workspace that will bring together our students and faculty from different academic programs with a brand new under-standing, and serve both on-campus and off-campus partici-pants. We have already begun the project proposal and archi-tectural design phase and hope to complete the construction of the building by Fall 2016.

Our final construction project is a dorm to be built on the parcel of land northeast of Dorm 1. While the preliminary ar-chitectural design phase has been underway, the details will be finalized over the coming days.

These large-scale projects are an ample testament to our Board’s trust and support for our University. I would like to ex-press my sincerest gratitude to our Board of Trustees for sharing our excitement and putting their faith in our University and its future.

Over the coming days, we will conduct a series of user studies for these projects, and I am confident that all respective members of the OzU family will partake in these studies to help us move forward. Further details about these studies and future developments will be announced later in the Semester.

LOOKING AHEAD: SAVE THE DATES As usual, the Spring semester has brought a number of op-

portunities for us to come together at special OzU events.

• The 6th annual Sectoral Orienteering was held from March 28th to April 8th. Just like previous years, the program offered invaluable opportunities to experience a variety of academic, professional, social and sportive events including case stud-ies, panels, mock interviews, theatre performances, concerts, and in-class sectoral discussion. The two-week program con-sisted of 101 events, each designed in collaboration with 115 participating institution in line with the University’s education philosophy. Over the course of these two weeks, the program brought approximately 3,000 students -from ScOLa students to seniors- together with executives, entrepreneurs, artists and athletes from all walks of life.

This year, Sectoral Orienteering also featured two impor-tant exhibitions.

Sectoral Orienteering Days is a comprehensive program that involves all academic units of our University; one that calls for collective efforts of all members of the OzU family. As such, I extend my heartfelt thanks to all those who made different contributions to enrich the offerings of this year’s program for their genuine support.

• Several campus-wide student club activities are planned for the last week of Spring semester classes (May 9-13). These will be a prelude to Homecoming on Saturday, May 14th

which is designed to bring students, faculty and staff together and for all of us to welcome our alumni back to campus.

Our 5th Commencement Ceremony is scheduled for Satur-day, June 25th, this year. While we do not have our final count of graduating seniors yet, close to 800 degree candidates are expected to participate in the ceremony. As we continue to move forward with the preparations for this significant event, I am thrilled to inform you that Mr. Muhtar Kent, Chairman of the Board of Directors and CEO of the Coca Cola Company, has agreed to join our Commencement Ceremony as our key note speaker. Mr. Kent is a visionary with an impressive global perspective and is a successful business leader. To-date, he has participated in numerous commencement ceremonies as a speaker. Mr. Kent last addressed the class of 2014 at Georgia Institute of Technology.

• As you know, new student recruiting is a yearlong under-taking and our recruiting team has been busy visiting target high schools, attending fairs, and organizing on and off-cam-pus custom-made programs. This, however, does not replace the formal “Information and Recruiting Days” when we host thousands of high school graduates on campus each year. While the dates for 2016 have not been announced yet, July 15th to August 4th appears to be the most likely time period. As always, our collective effort and participation - from students and alumni to faculty and administrative staff – is necessary to offer a well-organized, welcoming, and informative experience for all visitors. The positive outcome of this effort has been the steadily climbing student quality, placement scores, and our reputation. This is great news for the University, and espe-cially so for all our students and alumni. I am confident that this year’s recruitment will be no exception, resulting in even higher placement scores and enrollment rates, which we can all be proud of. Therefore, please make a special note of this formal recruiting period and consider it as full-time on-campus work while making your summer plans.

In appreciation and recognition for all you do, and with best wishes for yet another memorable and productive se-mester.

As such Özyeğin University added another success story to its international achievements. Our university was recognized

worldwide for its exemplary work and practices towards becom-ing a ‘’sustainable university’’. During the World Economic Forum (WEF) 2016 meetings held in Davos, the International Sustainable Campus Network (ISCN) in collaboration with the Global Univer-sity Leader Forum (GULF) which is the academic platform of WEF, shared exemplary “sustainable university” case studies provided by the world’s leading universities. Özyeğin University was includ-ed in the annual report of international sustainable campus best practices with its Sectoral Education Program. OzU contributed to the report as one of the 19 universities with selected case studies in “Capacity Building”, and “Innovation for Best Practices” reflect-ing how universities are developing their sustainability skills and building capacities in collaboration with corporate partners. The report showcased the world’s most renowned universities includ-ing University of Oxford, Harvard University, Princeton University, Yale University, University of California-Berkeley, University of Brit-ish Columbia, Technical University of Denmark, and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.

Founded in 2007, our University topped the “2015 Rankings of Turkish Universities Founded After 2000” published by the University Ranking by Academic Performance (URAP) Research Laboratory at the METU Graduate School of Informatics

Every year, the GreenMetric ranking measures each participating uni-versity’s performance based on six main categories including “Envi-

ronmental Setting, Energy and Climate Change, Waste, Water, Transpor-tation, and Education” as well as sub-categories. Universities are then ranked according to the success of their sustainable development and environmental protection approaches.

This year, more than 400 universities from different countries partici-pated in the ranking. Turkish universities stood out with their high rank-ings. Bülent Ecevit University ranked 217th in the overall ranking and first among universities from Turkey, while Özyeğin University ranked 260th in the overall ranking and second among universities from Turkey. Sabancı University ranked 276th in the overall ranking and third among universi-ties from Turkey. OzU thus also ranked first among foundation universi-ties from Turkey. Özyeğin University Rector Prof. Dr. Esra Gençtürk stated that the Çekmeköy Campus is a powerful testament to OzU’s innovative vision. “On campus and in all our activities, we have always endeavored to nurture an understanding that places a primary focus on creating a safe and environmentally friendly culture, and put it at the top of our list of priorities with the collective efforts of our stakeholders,” said Rector Prof. Dr. Gençtürk. “In recognition of our sensitiveness and commitment, we were awarded the LEED Gold Certificate in 2012 and 2013 for our three buildings. Added to this achievement, we were also granted the “Environ-mental Management System and Occupational Health and Safety Man-agement System” certifications in 2014. Further-more, having been included in a global ranking among the world’s most prestigious universities, and having ranked first among foundation univer-sities from Turkey was another source of pride to us all.”

Our success continues

The University Ranking by Academic Per-formance (URAP) Research Laboratory at the METU Graduate School of Informatics

has been releasing a report, which ranks Turk-ish universities based on their academic perfor-mance since 2009. In URAP’s latest report, OzU claimed first place among universities founded after 2000 and eighth place in the general rank-ing among foundation universities.

The URAP’s ranking is based on 9 perfor-mance indicators which aim to measure aca-demic productivity including the number of articles, the number of articles per faculty, the number of citations, the number of citations per faculty member, the total number of scientific publications, the total number of scientific publi-cations per faculty, the number of PhD students, the percentage of Ph.D. students and the num-ber of students per faculty. The study ranks Turk-ish universities based on these 9 performance

indicators under 9 different sub-categories. Accordingly, 72 universities founded before

2000, 62 universities founded after 2000, 95 state universities, and 39 foundation universities were ranked separately among themselves in their respective categories. METU, Hacettepe University and Istanbul University ranked in the top 3 among state universities, while Bilkent, Sabancı and Koç were placed in the top three among foundation universities. In evaluating the position of Özyeğin University in the URAP rank-ing, Rector Prof. Dr. Gencturk pointed to the fact that Özyeğin University is only a 7-year-old university and emphasized that she is pleased with the University’s performance, despite its young age. “The fact that we ranked first among universities founded after 2000 in the URAP ranking is ample testament to the impor-tance we attach to research,” said Rector Prof. Dr. Gençtürk.

The GreenMetric World University Ranking assesses the world’s greenest universities based on their commitment to environmental protection and sustainable development. Özyeğin topped the GreenMetric ranking among foundation universities from Turkey.

OzU was placed among the world’s most

prestigious universities, includingOxford,

Harvard, Princeton and Yale in recognition of its

outstanding “sustainab-le university” practices.

This is the first time in history that a university

from Turkey achieved such a success.

The Campus Services Advisory Board (CSAB) was formed in November 2015 with a team made up of representa-

tives from Administrative Services and the Student Union, as well as at least one representative from each academic department. The board is responsible for addressing any issues that have arisen or might arise pertaining to current or planned on-campus administrative services either on the Çekmeköy Campus or on Özyeğin University’s other cam-puses. The board is also responsible for suggesting solu-tions or recommendations to these issues and preparing and submitting reports to the Rector’s Office, when neces-sary. Any issue reported via the “Solution Center”, which is repetitive or which calls for structural changes also falls

within the scope of CSAB’s key line of duties. The Advisory Board also addresses any issues raised by the Rector, advi-sors, administrative departments, faculty and/or the Student Union pertaining to on-campus administrative services. To-date the board has focused on the following issues: Resolv-ing transportation issues (student and staff shuttles), man-aging parking lots, building a happy campus life with our on-campus cats and dogs, ensuring hygiene and order in classrooms and shared spaces, addressing on-campus se-curity, healthcare, bookstore and printer issues, managing dining hall and food/drinks services, managing the impacts of road constructions for the third bridge on our campus, and creating and maintaining a smoke-free airspace.

The Student Clubs and Events Commission was formed in November 2015 with a team of faculty representatives,

faculty members and the Social Activities Coordinator. It also aims to support, promote, and enhance teaching effec-tiveness; to create a platform and build a bridge across all disciplines to discuss and share different teaching practices at OzU, and ultimately to have a positive impact on student learning and development. The CLTE team was formed in March, 2015 and it started having its weekly meetings on

a voluntary basis with 5 members representing various fac-ulties of OzU (Engineering Faculty- Güray Erkol; Business Faculty- Sinem Atakan; School of Languages- Nergis Akbay, Bahar Hasırcı; School of Aviation- Luis Martin-Domingo). The CLTE members ground the center’s activities in line with the needs and wishes of the faculty members of the univer-sity. The main activities of the center include “Workshops” on recent teaching trends and approaches with some guest speakers, “Faculty Discussion Series” on daily teaching practices and issues, and a “Graduate Student Teaching Excellence Program” aiming to support new graduate stu-dents in the first years of their teaching career.

A university is a big business by any standard and de-mands due consideration and calls for effective strategic

planning. Özyeğin University Rector Prof. Dr. Esra Gencturk responded to this requirement by forming a team called the ‘Strategy Steering Committee’ as part of 2016-2021 strat-egy activities that she initiated. Chaired by Prof. Dr. Muhittin Oral, a member of our Faculty of Business, the committee will prepare the strategic plan of our university. What is new in the campus?

The Çekmeköy Campus is a concrete testimony to Özyeğin University’s innovative vision. The campus was designed as a green campus

that will make cultural and physical contributions to its surrounding environment. OzU’s environmental focus is also carefully maintained in its new campus buildings. OzU’s three new buildings are the best examples of its commitment to being a green and environmentally friendly university, for each of these buildings has been designed to respond to the de-velopmental needs of the University as it continues to evolve. The architectural design has already been completed and the architectural project has begun for the building coined “the fourth academic build-ing”. The fourth academic building is expected to open its doors in the Fall semester next year.

Also, the preliminary design process has been completed and the project phase has begun for the building which will house the Fit Startup Factory, the Center for Entrepreneurship, Sectoral Sustainability Laboratory, Maker Lab and other shared spaces. The location which was initially planned and partially built as a cafeteria has been “re-modeled” to serve other functions. The building is planned to open its doors in the Fall semester next year. Added to these buildings, a sixth dorm is planned for the northeast of the campus. The dorm will also accommodate a guest house.

Our Çekmeköy Campus will expand further with its new buildings.

In 2015, we hosted many events and welcomed world-renowned figures. One of them was Prof. Dr. Mohsen

Mostafavi, the Dean of the Harvard Graduate School of Design. Prof. Dr. Mostafavi attended a round table meet-ing during our event on Urban Design and Urbanization.

Last year, our students also made us proud with their remarkable achievements. OzU Architecture stu-dents claimed eight awards in a local architectural idea challenge on the rehabilitation of the Küçük Armutlu neighborhood.

Our faculty were admitted as members to the Inter-national Association of Universities and Colleges of Art, Design and Media (CUMULUS).

For 2016, we are very excited because we plan to

organize numerous other significant events. The 2016 European Design Communication Conference organ-ized annually by the Design Communication Associa-tion in the USA will be held by faculty on our Çekmeköy Campus from May 11 to May 14 this year. In June 2016, our university will also host the Board of Directors meet-ing of the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design (ICSID) to which Prof. Dr. Alpay Er, head of our Department of Industrial Design, is one of the members.

We are the address for international meetings

So far, our faculty held eight workshops in computer sciences, communications, lighting technologies

and high energy physics. These are held either directly by our faculty members or with their significant contribu-tions. Also, members of our Department of Computer Science spearheaded the organization of two interna-tional competitions. One of these competitions focuses on the use of robots in disaster management. In addi-tion, our Department of Electrical-Electronics Engineer-ing made an invaluable contribution to the international IEEE mobile communication standard with the commu-nication technology they recently developed as part of their ongoing European Union research project. Added to these achievements, the “Hour-of-Code”, a worldwide

computer programming training offered in more than 180 counties, and “CERN Masterclass”, a training ses-sion in particle physics which was offered at around 200 universities across the globe, were delivered in Turkey for the first time by faculty at our University. Our faculty members were also awarded six new TUBITAK research grants this year. Lastly, our faculty members were elect-ed the head of the IEEE Turkey, which is the world’s largest professional association for the advancement of technology, and were admitted as members to the IEEE Communications Society Awards Committee, as well as to the Advisory Boards of TUBITAK’s Electrical, Electronics, and Informatics Research Group and Math-ematics, Physics Research Support Group.

Following our official membership application of AACSB (The Association to Advance Collegiate

Schools of Business) in December 2014 our “Eligibility Application” report was accepted at the AACSB - Ini-tial Accreditation Committee (IAC) meeting on Febru-ary 2-3, 2016. This means that the Business School is ready to start the AACSB accreditation process.

Furthermore, Assistant Prof. Dr. Sinem Atakan, a member of our Faculty of Business, has been awarded research support from TUBITAK. Assistant Prof. Sinem Atakan’s project “An Investigation of Consumers’ Healthy Food Preparation and Consumption Behavior” aims to reveal whether preparing food for oneself actu-ally results in healthy food consumption, and, if so, why

and through which psychological processes it shapes the healthy consumption behavior. The project will be one of the first studies that investigate the impact of preparing food for oneself on healthy food consump-tion behavior from the perspective of consumers’ psy-chological processes.

On the students’ achievements side, the OzU team, which was chosen among five finalists of the CFA Challenge Turkey under the academic mentorship of Assistant Prof. Dr. Erkan Yönder, a member of our Faculty of Business, won the local finale. The team then successfully represented Turkey in the regional competition held in Amsterdam, the Netherlands in April.

The third NATO Model Event organized by the NATO Committee will take place in OzU on May 4-5, 2016.

Our student Defne Şahin was granted the Best Counsel award in the Model Courts of Justice event held by the Ankara University Model United Nations Club (FLAU-MUN) on February 5-7, 2016.

As the Dean of the Faculty of Law, I have been elect-ed a member of the International Anti-Drug Trafficking and Smuggling Unit (UBIM) of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. UBIM also hosts the third mission of the United Nations, following those in Los Angeles and Budapest. Furthermore, I am happy to announce that we organized an exhibition titled “Human Rights Through Caricatures” from February 28 to March 10, 2016, in cooperation with the Union of the Turkish Bar Associations and the As-

sociation of Caricaturists in Turkey. We also organized a panel on the “Freedom of Expression and its Limits From The Perspective of Theories and Trial Practices” on April 15, 2016.

In addition, I am also thrilled to announce that we will publish the tenth edition of our law journal, “Law Bridge”. The journal is intended to offer a comparison between Turkish Law and German Law, which is the main source of our law system, with a primary focus on current issues, court practices and implementation. The journal is the only bilingual (Turkish-German) publication in the field of law in Turkey. In closing, we take immense pride in our law programs, each enriched with our certi-fication programs and designed to make a difference in law education in Turkey.
