2015-2016 has been a year for refocussing the direction and activities of The Epilepsy
Centre within its fundamental Mission - “To significantly improve in all respects the
welfare of people with epilepsy and their families in South Australia and The Northern
Territory.”
It is essential as an organisation that we urgently strengthen our financial position,
and create the capacity to significantly increase the services we can provide to those
living with epilepsy and their families in South Australia. Again as a priority, we must
re-establish much more meaningful services in the Northern Territory.
Since accepting the role of Chief Executive Officer, I have taken action to reduce the
size of the administration by 50%. This has included absorbing my previous position of
Operations and Call Centre Manager. We have paid out a number of historical staffing
and contractual obligations, and despite the cost of meeting those obligations, our financial performance has shown positive
improvement since 1 July, 2016.
We must continue to build on the partnerships we have with existing supporters, and engage more closely with our
Membership. Some of our supporters and Members have contributed well beyond what reasonably could have been
expected. I refer to corporates such as Kon Skothos of Pro Paint ’n Panel; Cameron Mudge of MCN; Adrian Emeny of National
Wine Centre of Australia and, Tim Brinkworth of Midea Automotive Products (Wynn’s). Fiona MacLachlan has continued her
private financial support. On the personal side, I sincerely thank Kym and Jarrod Meers; Vikki and Glenn Threapleton; Erin
Burbidge and the entire Burbidge family; Simone Stewart and Brenton Schulz; Sharon and Adrian van Homelen; and, Elizabeth
and Peter Backshall. These wonderful people have donated so much of their personal time, effort and resources to raise
epilepsy awareness and support for The Epilepsy Centre. We are indebted to them all.
To secure our future sustainability, we must secure a number of new supporters on our merits, in a very competitive charity
space. The Ambassador, John Stock OAM and Patty Dollery as volunteers have been working with me to develop a strategic
approach to attracting substantial new sponsorship during 2017, and this is now being implemented.
The Epilepsy Centre of SA & NT does not receive any South Australian or Northern Territory Government Funding. This is a
matter for serious attention in the coming year. Our quest for Government funding must be based on a strong business case,
highlighting our ability to deliver high quality, capacity building, value-for-money supports to our participants. We must present
the ability of The Epilepsy Centre to support participants potential to participate and contribute to society, and have a say in
their own future. We must actively support families to access the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), and continue
to deliver high quality, person centred supports to help our participants achieve their individual goals.
Lastly, I want to acknowledge the huge support of the current staff of The Epilepsy Centre over the past year. We all owe a
debt of gratitude to Dianne Day and the Client Services team; Team Leader Bree Draper and the entire Call Centre team; to our
Accountant, Nicole Zhou; and, Administration and Marketing Team Kaye Carter and Troy Watherston. I thank you all from my
heart - for your passion for our cause, and for your level of personal commitment and support.

This year has seen the Epilepsy Association of SA & NT Inc. (The Epilepsy Centre) make significant changes to the way we operate. We have appointed a new CEO a new President and strengthened our Board; restructured our client services; in-creased our focus on direct donor and event fund raising; reenergised our Ambassa-dor programme and refocussed our call centre’s efforts. We have also tightened our financial management and significantly reduced some of our fixed costs, particularly those associated with rent and other occupancy costs.
The year has not been without its challenges, one of the first actions undertaken under our new CEO was to request a midyear review of our financial position by our auditor. That review returned a number of suggestions, all of which were adopted by The Board. Working with the Board, our new CEO, Robyn Wakefield, and her team have made significant progress towards re-pairing The Epilepsy Centre’s financial position. After several very challenging years of sustained losses, we are now back to operating with a budget surplus from our normal operations. This is a very important milestone, it places The Epilepsy Centre back on a sustainable financial footing and will allow us to start rebuilding our reserves and increase our service delivery to peo-ple living with or affected by epilepsy.
While, we continue to receive no South Australian Government support, we have taken some significant steps towards improv-ing the discourse between The Epilepsy Centre and members of both the Government and Opposition. We have also become much more forthright in communicating this lack of support to the broader community. We are hopeful that this will eventually lead to some level of support for our services from Government.
These efforts to foster relationships with parliamentarians and with many of South Australia’s major private benefactors has been greatly enhanced by the appointment of Mr John Stock OAM as an Ambassador to The Epilepsy Centre. John has worked very closely with our CEO offering great support and expertise, he continues to work with Robyn and the Board and his assis-tance is greatly appreciated.
I take this opportunity to personally thank The Board for their ongoing commitment to The Epilepsy Centre. We continue to look at the composition of The Board and seek opportunities to enhance our level of expertise in order to offer sound govern-ance and ongoing support to the efforts of management and staff.
I would like to thank all our staff for their efforts over the past year. The Board is well aware of the enormous effort people put in here at The Epilepsy Centre and how far above and beyond the normal “call of duty” you all go. Thank you!
Finally I would like to thank our former CEO, Robert Cole, for his many years of service to The Epilepsy Centre and take the opportunity to formally welcome our new CEO, Robyn Wakefield. Robyn is not new to The Epilepsy Centre having managed our call centre operations for three years. She brings an infectious enthusiasm and enormous energy to her new role and I am ab-solutely certain that she will make an outstanding CEO and champion for The Epilepsy Centre and our clients.

During this financial year the client services team have continued to successfully support the clients of Epilepsy Centre of SA
and NT to fully realise their potential, to participate in and contribute to society.
The Client Services Team currently consists of two part time Social Workers, two part time Registered Nurses, a Flinders
University Social Work student and volunteers. Each team member brings to the work place their own skills and expertise,
thereby maintaining a unique and specialised supportive environment for the clients they work with.
Our Social Workers deliver a high quality, person centred support approach to those living with Epilepsy, helping them to
achieve their individual goals. They provide assistance with daily living skills for those living with Epilepsy, working with
them to fully realise their potential, to boost their social and economic participation in society. Our Registered Nurses
deliver services such as the Individual Medical Care Plans, Midazolam Training and Epilepsy Awareness Education. Education
regarding Epilepsy is provided to schools and work places.
Together the team have worked to re-establish the Young Epilepsy Leaders of South Australia Youth Group, and as part of
this our youth enjoyed a wonderful two day camp at Nungyara Retreat at Belair this year. All members of the team and Call
Centre participated in this year’s drive to raise awareness of children and adults suffering from Seizures During the Night,
and raising much-needed funds for Seizure Monitors for them.
This financial year Clients Services had the privileged of travelling to Northern Territory, stopping at Alice Springs and
Darwin to deliver a Community Conference on Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy and Epilepsy Awareness. The Darwin
community did express a keen interest in having the Epilepsy Centre return to offer further support to their community.
The team continues to liaise with Non Government and Government Organisations, building strong partnerships with
Flinders Medical Centre and Women’s and Children’s Hospital. There will be opportunities for funding for services provided
offered by the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), and the team are working to align service provision with the
overall direction of the NDIS. Ensuring that both staff members and clients and families are well informed in relation to the
transition to the NDIS and have a strong relationship with the organisation, aware of the possibilities and the increased
choice, control and responsibilities offered by NDIS.
We look forward to a successful, exciting year ahead, meeting the challenge to deliver high quality, capacity building, value-
for-money supports – ready to consider new business models, explore new ideas, collaborations, technologies and service
offerings that are responsive to clients’ individual choices. In line with the Epilepsy Association Aim - to improve in all re-
spects the welfare of people with epilepsy and their families in South Australia and the Northern Territory.

The role of the Marketing and Communications sub-committee is to increase the awareness of the services provided by EASANT and activate opportunities to acquire sustainable funding via fundraising, events, bequests, government grants and sponsorship. This year EASANT further enhanced our online presence by increasing engagement with our website and social media initiatives. Our website is generating an average of $4000 in revenue per month, with over $48,000 for the year.
Our Facebook page has built a strong connection with the Epilepsy community, with 14,360 page likes as at 30 June and regularly receiving over 200 likes per month. We also had high levels of engagement on Instagram with 2,136 followers and 3,162 followers on Twitter as at 30 June. Troy Watherston does an excellent job of managing our digital assets and engagement through social media channels.
We held a number of successful events, with the Boys Day Out being a major contributor to our bottom line. We also engaged in a number of partnerships to raise funding through events. We are extremely grateful for the support of our sponsors, as their contributions ensure that we manage success and sustainable events. Thank you also to all the volunteers that have assisted with marketing activities throughout the year and the efforts of our staff.
