Using historical and contemporary researchUnit 9Contextual References

a research into historical and contemporary work, showing understanding of the contexts which influenced the work .

What have you learned about the influences on other’s work?

B recording and presenting information explaining the use of visual language in others’ work. Where have you analysed examples? What did you learn?

c use of contextual references in own work How have you used references? What impact did they have on your ideas?

• A) When researching artists I wanted to find people who created different (and contrasting) feelings/ atmospheres with their work. I researched Quentin Blake; an illustrator who creates fun drawings full of happy youthful energy. I also looked at underground artist Tuchi; she uses bold abstract colours to make expressionist art. I also studied the art I saw at the Tate Britain; contemporary works ranging in styles and feelings.

• B) I analysed the colour, tone and texture (when available) to determine the affect on the viewer. Because my brief is centred around creating a thought/ feeling I wanted to study how other artists achieved it.

• C) Using some of the research I was able to confirm that the use of some bold colours and strong lines created a good mood/ effect. With this information I wanted to play around with different ideas.

Location studies All Pathways- Fine Art, Design, Multimediaa. recording of experiences or information to develop intentions What approaches did you use to examine and record your location? Representing the space; details; light etc. How did you decide and which worked the best? Why?

b use of materials, processes and technology or a combination of materials, processes and technology to develop ideas What did you learn through your initial enquiries? Experiments and techniques, use of an experimental process to generate new ideas, suitability of some rather than others?

a) I started by taking pictures of my location. Next I used a number of different media’s to sketch and make studies of the different parts/ components that most interested me. Moving on I did several larger experiments of my area in layered collage, crayon and pen to get a better idea of the shapes and images I wanted to use going towards my final outcome. All these studies focused on either colour, light or shape – also sometimes the layers involved.

b) Through my experiments I got used to the shapes and styles I was most interested in, it also allowed me to try out some new ideas concerning medias that I’d never used before.

a) On top of my location studies I created a google sketch up model from the measurements of my location. I coloured and personalised the model with different effects and shadows to put it into situation, and I placed people into the world to compare sizes.

On top of this I created a minimalistic real life model to work from as well, to see lifelike shadows and shading to work from.

b) Through these enquiries I was able to pin point my favourite shapes in my location to use going forward into my final piece. Also by the time I had got to this point I had used a different number of ways to express my area, presenting different emotions and feelings, which helped with my brief.

Unit 11 Develop & Produce Own Ideas

a) Create and develop ideas in response to the brief. How did you interpret your brief? What different approaches to the same theme did you explore? What decisions did you make to refine your ideas?

b) Plan and produce finaloutcome using specialist working methods and processes. How did you decide on the final outcome? Why was this the best approach? How did you choose the techniques you’ve used? Did they work effectively?

Developing your personal brief

a) I wanted to give myself a specific task in my brief, I questioned creating some kind of minimalistic poster design but my research throughout the project was about how I (and other artists) could create different feelings and atmosphere around sources. This was my focus because I wanted to tackle the different feelings of my location when in use and when not in use – aka; energy of people vs natural standstill.

Thinking about this research I thought that it was best to create some kind of abstract art that tacked different feelings. In my research I visited the Tate Britain which featured lots of different types of abstract art – so I created the brief to create an abstract piece for the TB, as I’d already researched the type of work shown there already.

b) I liked the shapes of the box in my locational drawing so decided to use this image when deciding on the abstract piece. I wanted to create a nature centred box and a fun energy box (playing with life and nature). To make the work more abstract I chose to put my works on strings to be hung in the gallery, like some other work I saw there, and to present the work in an abstract way --- like they were frozen or some kind of snapshot.

I think my different acrylic technechs worked really well. I used natural earthy colours over a box stencil to create a natural piece on one canvas, and bright simplistic lines and colours splattered with texture for the other. I’m really happy with the result and I think it responded to the brief well.
