Michael Roberts, Board President
In my first year as President of the Board of Directors, I have been reminded time and again of the generosity that makes our community a wonderful place to live, work and
raise a family. You will find highlights of this generosity scattered throughout this report. The stories range from financial contributions that helped push the 2015 Campaign over its goal, to volunteers dedicating time to accomplish new things, to individuals who put their community first. At United Way, we witness tremendous things every day and we are proud to highlight just a few. Thank you for being a community that is generous, not just
with your dollars but with your time and your talents.

STAFF
OUR MISSIONUnited Way of Southern Chautauqua County mobilizes the
community to help people improve their lives.
Tory Irgang, Executive Director
As I celebrated five years as Executive Director of the United Way of Southern Chautauqua County, I took a moment to consider the path we’ve traveled. While the years look different – economics, volunteers, projects and
challenges – what remains consistent is the community that continually seeks to better itself. I am humbled by the dedication shown by those who work in the 42 programs that receive our funding. I am overcome by the giving nature of our neighbors and friends. I am inspired by the corporations and foundations seeking to invest in long-term solutions to the challenges we face. I am honored to work alongside a team of bright, innovative
colleagues. I am proud of the direction that our Board of Directors is setting for our United Way. It is impossible to imagine what the next five years will hold, but I am confident we are on the right track.

Community Impact
Volunteer Income Tax Assistance
Community BabyShower
Ten volunteers prepared 600 returns, bringing $1 million back to
Southern Chautauqua County.
The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (V.I.T.A.) program offers free tax preperation to people who earn less than
$54,000, persons with disabilities, and seniors.
If you are interested in becomming a V.I.T.A. volunteer, please visit our website at uwayscc.org/vita for more details.
The goal of community baby showers is to gather items that promote safe sleeping and a healthy start for infants. These items
are given to agencies that work one-on-one with mothers to provide education and case management.
If you are interested in hosting a community baby shower next year, visit uwayscc.org/united-mission for more details.
More than 500 baby items were collected by: Panama Central School, Northwest, Women’s
Assn. of MBCC, Marvin House members, & Lane Women’s Health Group.

Community Impact
Volunteer of the Year
This annual event recognizes the contributions that volunteers make to our community. Volunteer service is valued at
approximately $23.56 per hour. This means that each year, hundreds of thousands of dollars are contributed by those who
volunteer right here in our community.
Joseph H. Mason Award
Every year, United Way of Southern Chautauqua County presents this award to a union member or staff person who
has demonstrated service to the community that honors the spirit of involvement exhibited by the late
Joseph H. Mason.
United Way’s Community Partners collectively honored 16 individuals for
giving back. United Way thanked 44 Allocations volunteers for dedicating
440 hours.
Christopher Maggio, Jamestown Teachers Association member,

John A. and Oscar Johnson Memorial Fund
As part of the final grant-making of the Johnson Foundation, United Way received a $200,000 grant to support its long-term sustainability and operations. With this gift, the Board designated fund was
renamed the John A. and Oscar Johnson Memorial Fund to permanently honor the legacy of these hard working men.
“The Johnson Foundation has supported the annual United Way campaign throughout its existence and this was a way for it to continue doing so forever,” said Mr. John Sellstrom, Johnson
Foundation Trustee. “The Johnson brothers were humble individuals who wanted to know that their money would have an impact where it was needed most. We believe that our local United Way
provides a great opportunity to honor their wishes.”
“The Board of Directors was honored when we learned from the Sellstrom’s that the Johnson Foundation wished to contribute to the future sustainability of the United Way,” said Mr. Michael Roberts, Board President. “Renaming this fund in memory of John and Oscar Johnson was a great
way to make future Boards aware of the generosity.”
Each year, the Board utilizes a distribution from the endowment to supplement the operating expenses of the organization. This year, nearly 25% of the overall operating budget of the United
Way of Southern Chautauqua County was supported by the distribution from the endowment. “It can be challenging to raise new money through our traditional campaign,” shared Tory Irgang, Executive
Director. “We are grateful to past United Way Board members for the forward-thinking that initiated an endowment. The John A. and Oscar Johnson Memorial Fund will make it possible to put
more donor dollars where they are most needed - into community-based programming.”
