President’s Report What an incredible year it has been for KWSC! Our skaters continue to shine on the regional,

provincial, national and international stages. At our annual awards gala we will unveil three new

championship banners to be proudly displayed in the Carolyn Fedy Skating Centre as a reminder of

what our skaters can accomplish. I congratulate Canadian novice ice dance champions Olivia Han and

Grayson Lochhead, as well as senior ice dancers Kaitlyn Weaver and Andrew Poje for your gold medals

at both the Canadian Championships and the ISU Grand Prix Finals. I also congratulate Carolyn Fedy on

recently being inducted to the Skate Canada Western Ontario Section Hall of Fame. Carolyn joins a few

select individuals to this very special club as a testament to her lifelong commitment and outstanding

    contribution to KWSC.

A special thanks to our volunteers who supported our many exciting events including our Freeskate Festival, Ice Show,

numerous test days, simulations and send-offs, and the Awards Gala to name just a few. Our volunteers also helped welcome

and orient our new learn-to-skaters, organized fundraising skate sales, served on committees, and played key roles in

planning, running and officiating at several figure skating competitions. You make up the strong backbone of this club, and I

can’t thank you enough for all that you do. If you are not yet part of our volunteer team but would like to meet new people

and help support our skaters, please let us know!

In this final year of my volunteer role of KWSC President, I have greatly enjoyed working alongside our hard working staff and

coaches, and our dedicated volunteer team including my colleagues on the Board of Directors. These individuals have worked

diligently with integrity and fair-mindedness to guide our organization forward. This year your board has invested a significant

amount of time developing a financial strategy and a strategic plan to guide our already-strong organization over the next 5

years. The plan includes a focus on five broad goals: (1) provide high quality learn-to-skate opportunities to our community as

a foundation for all ice sports in a wide-reaching, inclusive and innovative manner; (2) offer the best possible experience and

highest level of training for figure skaters of all ages who have recreational and/or competitive aspirations; (3) develop a club

identity for all skaters (skaters/club as a team); (4) improve our competitive success and develop a reputation as providers of a

world-class training environment; and (5) continue our commitment to best practices in organizational leadership.

Several strategies will guide our work towards achieving these goals. They include: developing the critical facilities

    and infrastructure (e.g., ice, equipment, strong volunteer support team) needed to serve the Kitchener-Waterloo community;

continue developing opportunities for learn-to-skate engagement (e.g., SchoolSkate); further develop our program curriculum

to ensure the on-ice and off-ice needs of our athletes are being met across all LTAD stages; develop a sense of community in

our skaters by supporting club bonding and team-building opportunities; build a strong cooperative and skilled staff and

coaching team who will provide the highest level of training to our skaters. This will be achieved by developing strong team

leadership supporting cooperation amongst coaches providing opportunities for coach and program assistant professional

development; continue developing a strong educated board governance structure to lead the organization to achieve its goals.

Special thanks to our two retiring Directors, Lesley Germann, and Joanne Kuntz, for your invaluable service on the

board. I am especially grateful to Lesley, our Past President, for her guidance and mentoring, which proved invaluable to me in

my leadership role. I am also pleased to welcome to the Board our newest Directors, Yiyu Xie and Mike Levinski, and I look

forward to working with you next year.

I write this report shortly after attending the Skate Canada Ice Summit in Newfoundland as an invited speaker to

share information about our successful government-funded KWSC’s SchoolSkate pilot program. I was repeatedly reminded by

my colleagues at the Ice Summit that KWSC is not only one of Canada’s largest and most successful skating clubs, but we are

also innovators and serve as a role model for others to emulate. I couldn’t be more proud to have played a small part in our

club’s success serving as your President these past 4 years, and I look forward to the opportunities and new challenges that lie

ahead in serving KWSC in my new role of Past President.

Executive Director’s Report This has been a year of renewal in terms of focus on the basics of operating a club open to change and constantly trying to improve on the things we do best. I am identifying some highlights here so the members may get some insight into the variety of work we do for you. Our 15 year lease with City of Waterloo is up this year and significant effort was made to secure our CFSC home for years to come. Through this process we are addressing many facility challenges in spring including relocation and parking. All organizations see staff come and go and we are no exception. We welcome Theresa Stiles who serves in two different capacities as our SchoolSkate administrator and Athletic Centre supervisor. Also, Ashley Osika has added KWSC STAR base coach to her Learn-

to-Skate coach role, and we were lucky to have a number of new co-op students help us deliver programs. We run a very large organization with a very lean staff and they all rise to the challenge in peak times, flexing their hours to meet the needs of the club, and I am thankful for their commitment and passion. A new service this year was Summer Sizzle practice Ice, which we plan to run it again this year. We are very proud of our ability to launch the new SchoolSkate program to reach is 1350 students in 31 public schools across both boards and provide 5 high school co-ops and a university co-op student with a meaningful placement opportunity. It took a skilled volunteer to get the grant, determined and inventive staff to launch, flexible and creative coaches to implement. When Skate Canada retired their online registration system we engaged a new vendor to provide this service. The program called Uplifter was implemented gradually over all programs, not just LTS and Twin City as the previous service had. This took a tremendous amount of self-education, trial and error and system categorization, planning and programming before we launched. I cannot say enough about how hard our membership coordinator Justine DeRabbie worked during and outside office hours to get his up and running. This program provides many new features. It also provided us with a new opportunity to move away from first in line style registration which has many negative impacts on proper session management. This spring our coaching team was able to negotiate a balanced schedule that provided small groups of skaters of similar skill level to train together and the system facilitated the proper registration of this process. However, this new system also created significant audit challenges for our club accountant Debbie Weber to create new processes to ensure our books remain correct. We are very proud that we have had consistent clean audits and that is due in large part to the daily, weekly and monthly attention to detail Debbie provides. My deepest thanks to everyone who participated and contributed to this new system. It was my honor to serve alongside KWSC Members Justine DeRabbie, Angela Stark, Duncan Millar, and Cheryl Dotzert as LOC for the Synchronized Skating National Championships. It was 3 days of fantastic skating and great friendships. Cheers, Marie Pringle, Executive Director

    Skating Programs Manager’s Report

The 2015/16 season was another whirl of activities and accomplishments. Skaters worked hard to prepare for test sessions, ice shows and competitions. There were many highlights as each skater worked towards their own personal and customized goals.

We hosted 8 test sessions with 23 skaters completing their “gold test” level this season. All the test sessions are organized and operated by Tanja Poje who continues to volunteer in the role of test chairperson.

Our skaters travelled around the province, the country and the world to compete and succeed. Skaters competed well and performed well with more medals than we could count! Some of the highlights events are skaters are as follows: Kaitlyn Weaver and Andrew Poje: K and A continue to make us very proud, they push the

envelope and continue to strive for excellence, this season they captured gold at 4 events, including the ISU Grand Prix Final and Nationals. Kirsten Moore-Towers and Mike Marinaro: KMT and Mike enjoyed a wonderful season with 2 international bronze medals as well as two amazing skates at the World championships in March. 5 skaters attended the International Children’s games in, Innsbruck, Austria and had the time of their lives. Susan Ritchie travelled as the team coach and all skated well highlighted by Bridget LeDonne and Jakub Smal capturing gold 18 skaters competed at the Challenge event in Edmonton highlighted by a national silver medal for Sophia Strachan and Everest Zhu in Pre-Novice dance. 14 skaters competed at the National Championships in Halifax highlighted by two National Ice dance champions, Kaitlyn Weaver and Andrew Poje (Senior Dance) and Olivia Han and Grayson Lochhead (Novice Dance) 8 skaters travelled to Sudbury for the StarSkate Provincial Championships with Angela Ling and Aidan Wright winning gold in Juvenile Dance. 6 adult skaters competed at Adult nationals, competing in 10 different event bringing home 7 medals.

The year finished with the World Championship when both Kaitlyn and Andrew and KMT and Mike put on a great show and skated with finesse and class.

All the activities in 10 different rinks in both Kitchener and Waterloo cannot happen without the strong support of both cities and their respective staff. Kitchener and Waterloo are proud of their affiliated groups and are a wonderful resource and support for our club, its skaters and volunteers. The home rink, Carolyn Fedy Skating Centre at RIM Park, enjoys one of the finest skating facilities in the world. The staff at RIM Park make our lives much easier and they work with us closely and feel like members of our skating family.

KWSC had other new ice initiatives starting this past summer. KWSC Introduced a program called Junior Star accelerated. This program was for skaters in the Junior A or B program who wanted to have concentrated training near the end of summer training. It was very well received with 25 skaters enrolling and encouraging KWSC to host it again in the summer of 2016.

We also started some special recognition for Skaters and Program Assistants. Each month a skaters or skaters were named “Skater of the Month” and later in the winter season we started the “PA of the Month”. All in all we recognized 15 skaters through the season and 3 P.A’s. Skaters and Staff at KWSC thank the many hundreds of volunteers who make skating possible for over 2000 people at the Kitchener-Waterloo Skating Club. Paul MacIntosh, Skating Programs Manager

Membership Coordinator Report I want to thank our whole membership for your wonderful understanding and patience through our new change to our Online System. This year I worked hard to make the transition as smooth of a process as possible. I overcame the momentous task of reworking our new system to help with problems for Parents, Skaters, Coaches and Staff but only with the wonderful support I received from each of you. Thank you again and look forward to another successful year at KWSC. In the chart below, you can see our registration is steady overall with some sessions up and others down.

Coaching Committee It's truly surprising how quickly a whole year passes!

This year our coaching staff has seen a few changes. I'd like to welcome Ashley Osika to the club as our newest base coach. Ashley has a very bubbly, outgoing personality and is fast becoming a valued member of the coaching team.

Huge thanks to Kris Wirtz and Paul MacIntosh for leading and keeping us all on track throughout the season. Both of these individuals work very hard to keep the staff working well together and to bring new and exciting opportunities to our skating community.

Many changes will happen this year with our testing structure and I am happy to report that training is underway to update and keep us in the forefront of implementing these changes within our club. KW is a popular location, not just for training skaters, but also coaches, and not just from our club, but from the entire region. We are fortunate to have such a great place to work!

This year KWSC created, and piloted, a new School Skate program with grade 1 students from the KW area. A tremendous amount of work went into making this program fly, and boy did it fly! Many of our CanSkate and base coaches were up front and centre (on and off ice) helping to make this a hugely successful endeavor. It has to also be mentioned that Marie Pringle and Paul Mallet put their heart and soul into this project. There was so much background work done by these two that it was almost a full time job just to keep up .... thank you! Also a big thanks to Theresa Stiles who managed the day to day operations of this program.

I have very much enjoyed representing my colleagues on the board of directors. It is an honour to be part of such a fine group of individuals.

Best wishes to all for a very successful year ahead! Melinda Kunhegyi, KWSC Coaches Representative

    Coordinators Reports Singles Discipline

Another successful year for the Competitive program at the Kitchener Waterloo Skating Club! The team has worked hard, becoming more harmonized and cohesive as a whole group. The training and work ethic has seen a huge improvement and I look eagerly to the future as this group of talented skaters move in the right direction towards LTAD and their own personal goals. Kris Wirtz

    Learn to Skate

LTS program was busy and well delivered this year, with the Parent and Tot program growing in popularity. Our coaching staff of 25 coaches was motivated by our new young coaches that were past PAs in our club. Throughout the season there were 52 Program Assistants contributing to the operation of our sessions. We really appreciate these young volunteers! Our approach to customer service has really improved with our meet-and-greet tables and continuous communication through our member email system. The Grade One SchoolSkate program has certainly

put “our face” out there and it is exciting on the first day to have skaters tell us they did that program and liked skating so they joined us! We look forward to another successful Learn to Skate year! Carolyn Allwright

TCHSS Power Skating Our Twin City Hockey Skating School has seen some new changes this year. We are always competing with other programs for hockey players but this year we have seen a large increase in female hockey skaters coming into our program. Even though this opened up new challenges for us, we could not be happier to have more diversity in our sessions. This year we were also featured on the Rogers network, helping get our name out there to the public. Look forward to the coming years! Keith McCarthy

Synchro Skating The 2015 Revolution Synchro season started in the spring with a successful skills session. After the summer off, synchro returned to uncertainty and it was well into October when decisions were made. After much creative scheduling, budgeting, use of ice and flexibility on behalf of the coaching and office staff, 4 teams were launched.

We ran a Beginner 1 team (10 skaters, coached by Sarah Vollmer and Jeannette Griffin Shaw, managed by Teresa Rahn and Kara Stevens) two Elementary teams (Elementary A - 15 skaters coached

by Susan Ritchie and managed by Ted Wilberforce, Elementary B - 12 skaters including one double teamer, coached by Sarah and Jeannette, managed by Melissa Lehmann and Kara Stevens) and a Pre Novice team (11 skaters, coached by Susan and managed by Patti Jo Csontos and Heather Strecheniuk). The move to four teams provided a place for skaters with a wide range of abilities to skate as well as athletes up to the age of 19. This has created a stepping stone of teams for skaters to progress through from year to year and is very exciting for the Revolution Synchro program!

The beginner team skated at two competitions this year placing 7th/8 (only .39 points out of first!) and 5th/13. Elementary A and B competed three times. Their placings were as follows: Elementary A: 3rd/8, 15th/16 ,6th/8. Elementary B: 7th/8, 16th/16 and 8th/8. The Pre Novice team competed four times placing 6th/9, 2nd/7 12th/14 and 3rd/6. All four teams were hitting their stride by the end of the year and skated season’s best programs at the final competition of the year in Chatham.

Several exhibitions were skated throughout the season as well and all four teams travelled by bus to St Mary’s to perform in their ice show. The Revolution teams participated in Ice and the prenovice team participated. The Pre Novice team participated in a running race dubbed “Rev it Up 5K!” which they had been training all season for. Susan Ritchie

SchoolSkate We are thrilled to have had the chance to work with local schoolboard to deliver the first

“SchoolSkate” year made possible by a provincial grant. The program has touched and changed the lives of some 1325 grade 1 students in the region. Our goals were met as we saw the positive impact we had on these children. Some of them have never seen an ice rink before. The opportunity to experience the skill of skating will be with these kids for a lifetime. What an accomplishment! Some of the reasons these children have not had this opportunity before are, the cost factor, time restraints or simply that it is not something their family is acquainted with. In looking ahead the SchoolSkate team is preparing for the new school year. We are currently looking for financial sponsors and coop students. The future of this worthwhile program needs the support of many in the skating world as well as our local community to pull it off in the coming years. There are two key roles for this program to be a success: the skating end of things and the

administration. Both are vital to see the program operates with continuity and success. Our head coaches are having to constantly adapt to unforeseen challenges such as late busses, behavioral challenges and the relationships with the teachers. The coaches are delivering a modified CanSkate program in a 6 week format complete with achievement ribbons. Challenging but so rewarding to see the students that were literally crawling on the ice week 1 to soring around the coaches by week 6. Our staff manages on and off ice injuries and the day to day communication with the teachers. Because most of their parents are not there, independence and responsibility are gained by the end of the 6 weeks. The teachers and schoolboard administrator can’t say enough about how fantastic the coaches, staff and coop students are! The SchoolSkate team is excited for the coming year! Theresa Stiles & Tammy Van Schyndel

2016 Skate Canada Synchronized Skating Championships - Stefanie Wright The 2016 Skate Canada Synchronized Skating Championships were held at the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex February 19-21, 2016. Over 800 skaters from across the country gathered to compete at this event, comprising about 40 teams from Novice, Intermediate, Junior, Senior and Open levels. Although KWSC did not have any teams competing at the event, a large number of KWSC members and alumni did participate in the competition in various ways. KWSC skaters Angie Qi and Emily Wright (along with KWSC alumnus Nadia Vladco) were crowned national champions along with their Nexxice Junior teammates. Heather

Metzloff earned the silver medal while competing with Nexxice Intermediate and Leah Boileau also earned silver along with her Nexxice Novice teammates. During this event, the 2009 World Champion Nexxice Senior team, which trained part-time at KWSC and included a number of KWSC alumni as team members, was inducted into the Skate Canada Hall of Fame. Undoubtedly, KWSC’s greatest contribution to the event was the extraordinary turn-out of its members, including skaters, family members, coaches and staff, who volunteered at the event and helped to ensure that the event ran smoothly. No one who was present at the event will soon forget the energy and excitement that flowed throughout the building that is so typical of synchronized skating events!

Sectionals Simulations and Send-Off - Paul Mallet On Friday October 23rd, 2015 we held a well-attended simulations and send-off event. The day served as a full dress rehearsal and team-building event for our Western Ontario Sectionals competitors. Many coaches, spectators and skaters participated with 40 skaters performing either their short or long program. The event also included refreshments and a mental training workshop for skaters led by Dr. Kim Dawson. Dr. Dawson did a great job of helping prepare our athletes for the challenges that lie ahead in her fun and interactive workshop. We are grateful to KWSC President Paul Mallet for chairing this event and to Dave Martin, Justine DeRabbie and Paul Macintosh for their assistance in scheduling and running the event. We are looking for an energetic volunteer to chair or co-chair this event in the fall of 2016. If you might be able to support our 2016 sectionals team in this manner, please email [email protected] for more details.

These funds have been accumulated over many years from various sources such as profit form competitions, donations, interest income and surpluses from Club operations. In 2016 a small committee with 2 members of the Trust Committee and 2 members of the Board of Directors began the process of updating the agreement and structure of the Trust. As a child and teenager, I was a skater with the Forest and Watford Skating Clubs. I participated in both singles skating as well as synchronized skating for many years, and I achieved my Skate Canada Gold Level Dance and Skills tests. I am involved with the Board of KWSC as a way to give back to the community and to feel connected again to the sport. I provide a voice on the Board, as someone with knowledge of the sport but I will be objective as I do not have any current or historical ties to the club.

Paul Mallet Skating committees/events/volunteer work I have served as KWSC’s President for the past 4 years. I have chaired or co-chaired several committees (e.g., volunteer management, awards, gala) and serve as the KWSC webmaster. Outside KWSC I have served on the Grand River Skating Council, and I serve as a Skate Canada WO Section Data Specialist. I have volunteered at many skating competitions including lots of invitationals, Canadian nationals, and ISU events such as Skate Canada International and the World Figure Skating Championships. Other Information: My daughter’s love of skating sparked in me an ever-growing interest and commitment to the sport. Watching how much skating has taught her—not just skating skills, but also life skills—has inspired me to give back to the sport.

Duncan Millar Skating committees/events/volunteer work • Supportive parent at KWSC including welcome table and ice show set-up Other Information: When not at work, I can be found at the KWSC club skating rink where I spend my time watching my son in the competitive KWSC skate program master the art of figure skating under the tutelage of several great coaches. After watching my son progress through all the great programs and coaching available at KWSC including CanSkate, STARSkate, Enrichment, and Dance programs - my motivation has grown to volunteer and actively support the sport.

Carolyn Moss Skating committees/events/volunteer work I have volunteered for KWSC as program assistant, co-chair of 2015 StarSkate Send-off, Ice Captain for the 2015 KWSC Celebration of Excellence, Eistanzfest (Adult Social Dance) organizer, and costume committee and dressing room supervisor for KWSC ice shows. Outside of skating, I have been co-chair for the Ontario Psychological Association – Section on Independent Practice, a WeeWatch Board member, as well as the Environmental Director for the Cottage Association. Other Information: Skating has been a large part of my life for as long as I can remember, and I have been a member of KWSC for 20 years. As a skater, I have participated at many levels of skating over the years, including learn to skate, regular skating stream, synchro, varsity skating team, and adult skating. I also now have two daughters who skate at KWSC, who have been involved in Pre-Canskate, Canskate, Enrichment, Intro to Figure Skating, StarSkate, Synchro, and Competitive Dance. I believe all skaters should be encouraged and supported to reach their potential and learn what they can from their time skating.

    Patrick Therrien Skating committees/events/volunteer work

At UW, volunteered for undergraduate Psychology Students’ society

I also sat on the Executive Committee as Charity co-chair and Vice President Administration

Volunteered for KWSC competitions and events, including developing and delivering two competitive seminars Other Information: Having been a competitive skater and employee involved with KWSC for many years in the past, I would like to return to apply my skills as an athlete and those I picked up during my university years. Other Information: I have two children who have been skating at KWSC over the past 14 years. I have had first-hand experience as a skating parent at all levels, including Pre-School, Enrichment, CanSkate, STARSkate, and competitive singles, dance, and synchronized skating. As a former competitor in the sport of fencing I strongly believe in the notion of “sport for life” and I think that the “skater-first” philosophy must remain a priority at KWSC in order to give the skaters a desire to remain active in sport or other physical activity throughout their lives.

New Nominees: Mike Levinski Skating committees/events/volunteer work This past year I joined my first KWSC Committee by Co-Chairing the bi-annual Ice Show. This opportunity allowed me to become more familiar with the structure and functions of the club. Additionally, this past year I volunteered at the Canadian National Synchronized Skating Competition, Summer Sizzle, Freeskate Festival and welcome tables for our Learn to Skate members. Outside of skating I have also coached 2 years of indoor house league for Waterloo Minor Soccer as well as a 2 years coaching ball hockey. Other Information: Although I never had the opportunity to participate in skating lessons as a child my wife and I have watched our daughter progress from CanSkate to Intermediate Star and Synchronized skating teams over the last 7 years. I have truly seen first-hand what a positive and inviting sports atmosphere can do for increasing self confidence and forging great friendships. These are the characteristics that I hope to continue to develop for all skaters.

Yiyu Xie Skating committees/events/volunteer work I have volunteered for KWSC ice shows/showcases since 2012 and some other club level events. Other Information: I always enjoy watching figure skating on TV. Ever since my son started to learn skating in CanSkate eight years ago, and my daughter joined later five years ago, I've spent most of my time, at rink side, watching them enjoying every moment on ice. As they progressed through various programs offered by KWSC, I've witnessed the club evolved to better serve the community as well as strived to meet individual skater's need. I would like to make a contribution to the club’s growth and reaching its full potential, and be a more active supporter of the sport. In my spare time, I love Zumba, cooking, travelling and spending time with my family and friends.
