These 85 tiny strips of land, barely rising above sea level, represent just 775 km2 of land scattered over a million square kilometers in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Mostly made up of coral reefs, the Atolls are commonly arranged in a crown formation, with a turquoise lagoon at the center. The singer-songwriter from Brussels sang about the Marquesas Islands, also nicknamed “the Land of Men”, and the painter Paul GAUGUIN was inspired by them. This group of islands stands like dark green fortresses amid the indigo blue of the Pacific. Whereas Hiva Oa’s fertile shores are bathed by waves, its big sister Nuku Hiva is home to sparkling waterfalls and rivers where a number of legends were born. The island is in fact well-known for its sacred vestiges such as the mysterious “tikis”, those omnipresent statues depicting gods or genies that keep bad energy at bay.

TUAMOTU - RANGIROALaying between the sky and the Pacific Ocean, the Tuamotu Islands appear like a fine pearl necklace scattered over 1,800 km of sea. These atolls are the vestiges of ancient volcanoes submerged by the lagoon. They are so numerous and small that it took many years to establish exactly how many of them there were. They are one of the richest marine wildlife environments in the world. At the heart of this myriad of idyllic islands, Rangiroa, meaning “vast sky” in Polynesian, is very aptly named. That’s right, on 9 March the Moon will mask the Sun completely, leaving only a soft halo of light unhidden. It would usually be difficult to witness this exceptional event, as most of the eclipse will only be visible from a small part of Indonesia. Come and experience this magical moment, all alone on Le Soléal’s exterior decks as the ship cruises towards Manado. The shadow of the Moon will gradually cover the Sun to steal its limelight, and eventually the darkest of nights will fall, in the middle of the day. But rest assured: though this surreal night might feel like the end of the world, it will only last a few minutes as the fiery orb claims back its rightful place after vanquishing the Moon.

The Orang-Utan is the only Asian representative of the great apes and this primate, whose Malaysian name means “man of the forest” is easily recognizable by its long arms and its flamboyant orange fur. Aside from mothers and their young, Orang-Utans are a solitary species that spend most of their life swinging from the tops of tall trees. Here, orphaned animals or those born in captivity are taught to live independently so that they can be returned to their natural habitat, which are always very moving moments. IMPORTANT INFORMATIONS

• Australia & New Zealand: Australian and New Zealand customs regulations are very strict, especially for the import of food items such as fresh food (even sealed), fruits, eggs, meat, plants, vegetables, seeds, grains. Fur and feathers are also forbidden. We highly recommend you consult this website for further details: www.customs.gov.au.

• Visas: Before departure, please check carefully that your visas are valid for the right date and time spent in the countries in order to avoid unpleasant situations.

• Sightseeing: Some places can only be visited on foot. Also, sites may have stairs or require you to take off shoes.

• Currency: Plan to have US dollars in small notes as they are easier to use outside of large cities.

• Medication: If you have a medical treatment, do not forget your prescription.

• Coaches: road conditions are poor in certain countries. Timings are unpredictable due to heavy traffic conditions. The comfort of coaches cannot be compared to that of international vehicles and often lack suspension.

• Guides : PONANT is aware that the quality of guides is of utmost importance and puts all efforts in place to secure the best local guides available. Note that guides in Asia often have heavy accents. Several of our calls visit small and isolated communities where resources (transportation and guides) are scarce, resulting in higher prices.

As you will be visiting some very remote and isolated parts of the world, resources (transportation and guides) are scarce and may not be of the standards you are used to. We ask for your patience and understanding during these truly unique experiences as we share the lifestyle and cultures of these seldom visited people and places.

EXPEDITION CRUISE IN SUBANTARCTIC ISLANDS OF NEW ZEALAND & AUSTRALIA

• This program is first of all an expedition.

• Given the inaccessibility of the area visited, it is highly recommended to choose your insurance company carefully. In addition, it is mandatory to return the medical questionnaire, provided at time of booking, at the latest 90 days prior to departure. This questionnaire is very important in order to respect mandatory safety rules in polar zones. Any false information on this questionnaire may lead to a refusal of your embarkation at the port of departure, without any possible recourse.

• Due to the exceptional nature of this itinerary, the calls/sites listed are only a guide. The final route will be confirmed by the ship’s Captain with priority being given to passenger safety. Pack ice may also force the Captain to change course at the last minute. His decision will be based on advice from expert pilots who are present on board during our cruise in Subantarctic Islands. Zodiac® landings or outings accompanied by your expedition team offer plenty of opportunities to discover and experience what Subantarctic Islands have to offer at close range. These will of course depend on the weather conditions, the ice, the wind and the sea state.

• A warm waterproof parka will be provided onboard (available for adults only). We also recommend you follow the clothing instructions and advice you will find in your travel documents.
