For the very first time, PONANT is taking you to the heart of the Pacific Ocean.

Tahiti, Bora Bora, the Tuamotus and the Marquesas are legendary islands whose melodic names alone conjure images of exotic and wild beauty. Suspended between sky and sea and boasting a unique culture blending treasures and mysteries, these spectacular lands awaken in us extraordinary images, fill the air with the sound of the large, traditional drums called “pahu”, and call to mind such emblematic names as Paul Gauguin, Robert Louis Stevenson and Jacques Brel.

Then we continue our voyage farther South...

The fascinating land of Australia will treat you to the unforgettable experience of the last remaining virgin lands, the priceless natural treasures of its emblematic Barrier Reef, and the magic of simple and warm encounters with the local populations, whose ancestral traditions are still very much alive and whose philosophy of life is sure to appeal to travellers.

Let’s continue towards the East...

New Zealand, the lush “land of the long white cloud”, is an Eden; an insular realm composed of two islands with an infinite variety of landscapes, where the volcanoes in the north, with their vertiginous green peaks, contrast with the majestic glaciers in the south.

From one port of call to the next, these remote, mineral and wild lands will reveal themselves to you as rich mosaics of colour and light where authentic encounters and age-old cultures are waiting to greet you.

On board, our attentive crew, our naturalist guides and our lecturers travel with you. As we sail across the water, you’ll be swept away by the wonderful alchemy of PONANT’s great cruises, blending escape, luxury, authenticity, and the discovery of superb faraway lands...

See you on board very soon.

PACIFIC ARCHIPELAGO & POLYNESIA“It’s Heaven on Earth!” exclaimed Louis Antoine de BOUGAINVILLE as he reached land on the coast of Tahiti one morning in April 1768.

From James COOK to Paul GAUGUIN, Herman MELVILLE, Pierre LOTI and Robert Louis STEVENSON, French Polynesia, a land of history, tradition and exoticism, has fascinated generations of explorers, travelling writers and painters. Picture this... idyllic islands with white sand beaches and turquoise lagoons, the horizon as far as the eye can see.

A cruise aboard L’Austral or Le Soléal is a unique opportunity to discover Polynesia, a natural gem with unrivalled landscapes. Bora Bora, Tahiti, Raiatea and Easter Island - these evocative names bring to mind carefree adventures, inviting you to travel and experience a total change of scenery.

With its 118 islands and its 5 archipelagos, this magical place offers a setting of extraordinary natural beauty: deep valleys, majestically overlooking opalescent lagoons dotted with "motus", gushing waterfalls, mysterious tropical-scented jungle and sandy beaches wrapped in the gentle curves of undulating, virginal waves. Everything here is a delight to the senses.

Aboard L’Austral and Le Soléal, we invite you to discover this pristine Garden of Eden. This is a bewitching destination where the trade winds gently blow, infusing the islands with the sweet scent of Tahitian flowers.

WHY GO THERE?FOR THE POLYNESIAN ATOLLS Discover an unspoiled and fascinating world, whose exceptional colors give this part of the World the nickname of the “Blue Paradise”: The Polynesian Atolls. These 85 tiny strips of land, barely rising above sea level, represent just 775 km2 of land scattered over a million square kilometers in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Mostly made up of coral reefs, the Atolls are commonly arranged in a crown formation, with a turquoise lagoon at the center. Veritable natural aquariums, they remain one of the last places on Earth where Manta Rays, Sea Turtles and Whale Sharks can be seen in the wild.

FOR THE CHARMS OF NEW CALEDONIA A distant land, a land of contrasts, an authentic land… New Caledonia is a unique and multi- faceted destination. Discovered in the 18th century by the explorer James COOK, she’s bathed in crystal waters and with gentle trade winds blowing all year round, the island offers visitors’ exceptional scenery made up of long golden sandy beaches and peaceful harbors, mountain chains and high cliffs, whilst on the horizon a unique aquarium looms - The Pacific Ocean. The unique beauty and exceptional ecosystems of its lagoons have earned it UNESCO World Heritage status.

FOR THE POLYNESIAN SEABED From the time of the first explorers to the present day, Polynesia has always inspired us to dream. This heavenly- scented Garden of Eden offers travellers abundant nature, both on land and under water. White sand beaches and lush islets are commonplace here where the pace is set by the Ocean and the sound of Ukuleles. A paradise for big fish, the islands of the Pacific are a mythical place that many divers dream about, due to the diversity of the coral reefs. As visibility under water is often perfect, amateur divers will discover sea sponges in elegant shapes, corals in vibrant colours, and shells with fascinating silhouettes. But above all, languid Sea Turtles and fish of all sizes swim graciously about the heart of the turquoise lagoons.

FOR THE MYSTERIES OF EASTER ISLAND A mysterious and fascinating land, Easter Island is the most isolated place on Earth. During your cruise, do not miss our port of call to this mythical island with its black lava cliffs, lashed by the clearest waters in the world. Above all, be sure to discover the Moais, monumental statues erected with their backs to the sea or facing houses, as a symbol of protection. Many questions are still unanswered to this day: Why were they built? How were they transported? The mystery remains intact, making this island a legendary destination.

FOR THE MARQUESAS ISLANDS“On these islands where the solitude is total, I found a kind of inner peace”, wrote Jacques BREL. The singer-songwriter from Brussels sang about the Marquesas Islands, also nicknamed “the Land of Men”, and the painter Paul GAUGUIN was inspired by them. This group of islands stands like dark green fortresses amid the indigo blue of the Pacific. Whereas Hiva Oa’s fertile shores are bathed by waves, its big sister Nuku Hiva is home to sparkling waterfalls and rivers where a number of legends were born. The island is in fact well-known for its sacred vestiges such as the mysterious “tikis”, those omnipresent statues depicting gods or genies that keep bad energy at bay.

L’AUSTRAL: SEPTEMBER 17TH 201516 DAYS / 15 NIGHTS

HIVA OA - ATUONA You’ll immediately understand why this remote and unusual chain of islands bathing in the crystal-clear waters of the Pacific Ocean inspired Jacques BREL’s final album. During your cruise, we will stop at Hiva Oa, a small island located to the north-east of Tahiti and considered to be the “garden of the Marquesas Islands.” A special kind of power and charm emanate from its craggy skyline and black sand beaches. You’ll want to explore its lush, green valleys, home to impressive archaeological sites and a wide array of plants and wildlife. Visit the small village of Atuona, considered to be the island’s capital, and discover the tombs of Paul GAUGUIN and Jacques BREL, as well as two small museums dedicated to their life and work.

THE MARQUESAS ISLANDSThis remote destination was discovered in the 18th century by the explorer James COOK and given the poetic nickname of the island of “Eternal Spring” by the Japanese. At the heart of dense and luxuriant forests, mysterious petroglyphs, many thousands of years old, can still be found, as well as the remains of “marae” - temples with a religious and political purpose. Reputed for their arts and crafts, which are unrivalled in Polynesia, Marquesa Islanders sculpt wood, stone or bone to produce statues, small ornaments and jewellery. Like Jacques BREL and Paul GAUGUIN before you, come and lose yourself on these islands that seem unchanged by time.

ENJOY THE FREEDOM OF THE CITY IN HONOLULUThe capital of the Hawaiian Islands, Honolulu, is an earthly paradise that fascinates and attracts visitors from all over the world. If you already know Honolulu and would like to visit it at your own pace to discover or rediscover its main monuments, we bring you the "Freedom of the City" package. From your accommodation at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel, also known as the “Pink Palace of the Pacific”, you will be able to both visit the centre of Honolulu and enjoy the splendour of the Pacific Ocean.Price per person from 395 €

ABOARD L’AUSTRAL OCTOBER 02ND 2015 (9 nights) From 1 890 €See price list page 48.

HUAHINEThe “secret” island, the ”authentic” island, the “wild” island... so many words have been used to describe the primitive beauty of Huahine. Located in the heart of the Pacific, this small strip of land is without a doubt the most attractive of the Society Islands. This is where the most extensive archaeological remains in Polynesia can be found: the “Marae”, where sacrifices were made to the gods, have been superbly preserved and create a solemn and sacred atmosphere. Considered to be the “cradle of Polynesian culture”, Huahine offers its visitors dense vegetation, long beaches of golden sand, a large number of coral islets, and a lagoon with colours ranging from turquoise to emerald. When L’Austral calls here, don’t miss the chance to discover a traditional pearl farm and the incredible open- air stone temples, or to dive into the crystal waters of the lagoon to discover its tropical flora and fauna.

HIGHLIGHTS• From Huahine, go on a cultural hike through

the village of Maeva to discover the sacred sites.

• From Rangiroa, visit a pearl farm and discover the extraordinary black pearl industry.

• Take a scenic helicopter flight over Bora Bora, the “Pearl of the Pacific“, considered to be the most beautiful lagoon in the world (optional).

• Enjoy white sand beaches and snorkeling in the calm, clear waters of the Society Islands

• A Lecturer with a passion for Polynesian culture will be on board.

BORA BORASurrounded by “motus” (coral islets) like a pearl necklace, the lagoon of Bora Bora, its aquamarine waters contrasting with the cobalt blue of the Ocean, is renowned for being unique in the world. ”Nowhere else on earth” wrote Paul-Émile VICTOR when describing this idyllic atoll. “Bora Bora“ means “first born” in Tahitian and legend tells that the island emerged from the water at the behest of the Gods, before its coral cousins. You will have the opportunity to enjoy its exceptional lagoon, relaxing in the shade of the coconut trees, as well as to dive with the multicolored fish and harmless Rays that dance in this water, in the midst of the coral reefs.

During your cruise, set sail for a captivating journey full of charm and beauty, to discover the “Pearls of the Pacific”. TUAMOTU - RANGIROALaying between the sky and the Pacific Ocean, the Tuamotu Islands appear like a fine pearl necklace scattered over 1,800 km of sea. These atolls are the vestiges of ancient volcanoes submerged by the lagoon. They are so numerous and small that it took many years to establish exactly how many of them there were. They are one of the richest marine wildlife environments in the world. At the heart of this myriad of idyllic islands, Rangiroa, meaning “vast sky” in Polynesian, is very aptly named. The lagoon of the largest atoll in Polynesia is reminiscent of the heavens, imprisoned by hundreds of islets formed by sand that veers from immaculate white to pink. But the beauty of Rangiroa is most evident in its underwater life: Jacques COUSTEAU himself considered it to be one of the most fabulous sites on Earth.

HIGHLIGHTS• Discover the island of Tahiti and Papeete, the

capital of French Polynesia.• At Atunoa, the former capital of the

Marquesas Islands, visit the tombs of Paul GAUGUIN and Jacques BREL, as well as the small museums dedicated to their life and work.

• Take a scenic helicopter flight over Bora Bora’s lagoon, renowned as the most beautiful in the World (optional).

• Enjoy the many pristine sand beaches and snorkeling in the crystal waters of the Pacific Ocean.

• A Lecturer with a passion for the Pacific Islands and their cultures will be on board.

PAPEETEDiscover Papeete, capital of French Polynesia, located on the famous island of Tahiti, at the heart of the Society Islands. If Tahiti as a whole is renowned throughout the world for its legendary beauty and its precious pearls, Papeete is one of the jewels in its crown. At the water’s edge, bungalows on stilts offer a breathtaking view over the azure lagoons, whilst the lush forests are teeming with secret and wild areas, without forgetting the “Mapuru Paraita” market, for which the city is famous. Do not miss the chance to immerse yourself in this concerto of multicolored flavours and fragrances, between coconut milk, Tiaré flower garlands and precious mother-of-pearl ornaments.

THE UNDERWATER WORLD IN POLYNESIAWhen we talk about the landscapes of Polynesia, the first image that comes to a traveller’s mind is that of desert islands surrounded by beaches and turquoise Ocean. But this doesn’t take into account the treasures to be found in the depths of its waters, which are like a giant aquarium. Discovering the underwater plant and marine life is a must on any trip to Polynesia. Equipped with your snorkel and mask, swim in the jade lagoons of the Tuamotu Islands and observe the countless species of fish with their delicate forms and multicoloured markings. Among the lacy coral fronds, come and admire the schools of Damselfish, Red Mullets and Longspine Squirrelfish, or the small Clown Fish, cautiously peeking out from anemone to greet the Sea Turtles and majestic Manta Rays gliding smoothly over the glittering sea bed. Discover this pristine other-world, teeming with rare and unsuspected life.

BORA BORA : FLY OVER THE ATOLL IN A HELICOPTER (OPTIONAL) There is no word strong enough to convey the dazzling and brazen beauty of Bora Bora and its lagoon. On this mythical island discovered by Captain James Cook in the 17th century, everything is richer, bluer, more beautiful and more bewitching than anywhere else. With its vast ring of coral surrounding the dark mass of Mount Otemanu, the "Pearl of the Windward Islands" also offers its visitors an atoll with a dazzling array of lights and colours, considered to be the most beautiful in the world. During your visit, we invite you to fly over this remarkable aquatic treasure in a helicopter and admire the crystal waters in infinite shades of blue, from the most translucent to the deepest hues, teeming with a multitude of fish and coral in magical colours. Enjoy an unforgettable experience in a picture-perfect setting that will inspire even the most reluctant photographer.

MANGAREVA - RIKITEAOff the south- eastern tip of the Tuamotu stands the most remote and little-known Polynesian archipelago: the Gambier Islands. The largest island in this natural and cultural gem is Mangareva, meaning “the floating mountain”, a remarkable world caught between ocean and sky, surrounded by a stunning coral reef and covered in lush vegetation. As the cradle of Catholicism in this part of the world, the island boasts numerous vestiges of religious buildings constructed in the 19th century, including Saint Michel’s Cathedral, Polynesia’s most beautiful edifice, made entirely from coral and standing proudly in the small village of Rikitea. Built along the lush, green bay that lines the Gambier lagoon, the town of Rikitea is also renowned for the quality of its flawless black pearls, born in its pure and protected waters and considered to be the most beautiful in Polynesia. This small piece of paradise boasts idyllic landscapes and is full of history. Succumb to its charms and it will reveal to you its most stunning treasures.

GAMBIER ISLANDSAs a result of their remote location, the Gambier Islands, also known as Mangareva, are undoubtedly some of the best-kept secrets in all of Polynesia. Far from the usual tourist circuits, these ten islands are encircled by a large coral belt, which has produced a lagoon with varied and changing colors. A veritable cultural destination, Rikitea delights visitors with its heritage of religious monuments from the 19th century. Do not miss the visit to the Saint-Michel Cathedral, the largest and most beautiful building in Polynesia, entirely built from coral stones and wood. Its altar is decorated with the finest mother-of-pearl in Polynesia, raised in the waters of the purest lagoon.

FOR THE ABORIGINAL PEOPLE AND HIS CULTUREThe history of Australia was written in two stages. The first began forty thousand years ago well before the time of the pharaohs, with the Aborigines, whose culture is now an integral part of Australia’s heritage. The indigenous people called the Yolngu settled in the country’s north in small nomadic tribal groups. During your cruise aboard Le Soléal, we will offer you a chance to meet a community of Aborigines living on their ancestors’ land. Yirrkala is home to around 850 people who have successfully maintained their beliefs and ancestral lifestyle to this day.

FOR MELBOURNE, “SO BRITISH”Melbourne stands out as one of the island continent’s most creative cities. This Australian capital of fashion, culture and sport changes colors, styles and tastes according to influences. Built around the Yarra River, Melbourne charms its visitors with its many green parks, its fascinating landscapes, its abundant cultural life, and its famous inner suburbs filled with Victorian houses which give the city a British style that is unique in Australia. Between modern architecture and old buildings, Marvellous Melbourne, as it is sometimes affectionately called, offers an exceptional environment that places it among the world’s most livable cities!

TO CELEBRATE THE NEW YEAR IN SUBANTARCTIC ISLANDSThis year, gift yourself an original and unforgettable festive season, far from the urban hustle and bustle: take an adventure cruise to the heart of the New Zealand’s Subantarctic islands which will reveal their strange primitive beauty to you. Most of these islands which are also nicknamed “the Galápagos of the Southern Ocean” are volcanic and are known for the surprisingly rich biodiversity which has earned them their place as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Cruising aboard Le Soléal, discover their exuberant fauna composed of species that are often endemic, such as the Yellow-Eyed Penguin.

FOR ROTORUA AND ITS MAORI CULTUREThe North Island, also known as “the smoking island”, is home to New Zealand’s most atypical city. Nestled on the shores of the lake bearing the same name, in the heart of a majestic volcanic setting, Rotorua is considered to be the “Maori face” of this country. Surrounded by bush, forests and cultivated lands, a chain of fifteen lakes dots the landscape like pearls on a dazzling necklace. Set out to discover the protected forests, whose thick mantle conceals an astonishing landscape. Wonder at this land of a thousand and one colors, birthplace of the Maori culture.

SAILING AROUND SHIP COVEJanuary 16, 1770: “Variable light airs and clear settled weather. At 2 o’clock we anchor’d in a very snug cove, lying to the north-east of Ship Cove.” Extract from “Journal During the First Voyage Around the World“ by Captain James COOK. New Zealand’s South Island offers boundless landscapes, a mixture of deep fjords and wildly romantic coastline. Le Soléal’s itinerary will take you to the northern tip of the island with its patchwork of uniquely beautiful harbours, inlets and strips of sea. At the mouth of Queen Charlotte Sound, follow in the traces of the British explorer Captain James COOK, who sailed these fjords and anchored in Ship Cove, his last port of call in New Zealand. Comfortably ensconced on the outer decks of Le Soléal, fall under the spell of the golden sand beaches and the labyrinths of submerged valleys that are home to remarkably beautiful and pristine plants and wildlife.

THE AOTEAORA LEGEND“Thousands of years ago, somewhere in the heart of the Pacific, there lived a demigod named Maui who set out to sea with his brothers to gather fish to feed his people. After casting his magic fish hook above the waves of foam, he felt a strong tug on the end of his line. Maui and his brothers began to pull in what they thought would be a gigantic fish, and a mountainous land emerged from the Ocean: the North Island of the New Zealand was born, while the young demigod’s flimsy canoe became the South Island“. Over time, the plants, animals and people of Hawaiki settled on these lands, turning these remote islands into the authentic and mysterious country we know today.

With its winning blend of European and Australian culture, the cultural capital of the island continent offers its visitors a multitude of lush green parks and 19th  century Victorian buildings standing alongside giant skyscrapers. Before or after your cruise, we invite you to discover this bustling city and its old buildings. Then we will take you to Phillip Island to meet the “Little Penguins”, the world’s smallest Penguins, also known as Blue Penguins because of the colour of their plumage. These animals are native to the Southern Hemisphere and you will have the chance to observe them in their natural habitat.

HIGHLIGHTS• From Tauranga, discover the Wai-O-Tapu

Thermal Wonderland and sail on Lake Rotorua aboard the Lakeland Queen.

• From the city of Wellington, discover the Zealandia eco-sanctuary, a site entirely dedicated to the unique history of New Zealand’s conservation.

• From Picton, visit the Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre and its exhibitions of aircraft from World War I, and enjoy a wine tasting at the Brancott Estate Heritage Centre.

• From Nelson, discover the Abel Tasman National Park with its superb beaches and primary forests.

• A Lecturer specialising in New Zealand history will be on board.

HOBART - TASMANIA “But what is the source of this strong feeling, that once you have crossed the strait you enter a region where the accents are Australian but the landscapes are foreign?”. Dominated by snow-capped peaks and swept by oceanic winds, Tasmania has successfully preserved its most important asset: its pristine beauty. The smallest of Australia’s states offers a wide variety of scenery, mingling national parks and nature reserves. During your cruise, Le Soléal will take you to discover Hobart. Located at the mouth of the Derwent River and protected by the Rocky Mount Wellington, Tasmania’s historic capital has surprising scenery in store for you: Georgian sandstone buildings dating back to the 19th century, numerous waterways traversing the city, and the famous Salamanca Market. This picturesque city is rich in treasures.

TAURANGA - ROTORUAPeacefully established on the southern shore of the lake bearing the same name, Rotorua, or “second lake” in Maori, is by far New Zealand’s most unusual city. Considered to be the heart of Maori culture, this city offers visitors the chance to discover all of its richness and variety through numerous activities such as a traditional meal, and shows combining singing and dancing to reveal this fascinating ancestral culture. On the edges of the city, a place like no other lies waiting to welcome you. And in true explorer fashion, you’ll be able to discover the heart of the surrounding protected forests, whose thick mantle conceals a multitude of treasures. This place will not fail to leave a lasting and memorable impression.

WELLINGTONCapital of New Zealand since the 19th century, ancestral home to generations of Maori tribes, as confirmed by the many historical sites in the city, Windy Wellington, as the city is known, perfectly combines local traditions and a bustling nightlife. Avant- garde and friendly, skilfully blending history and modernity, the city is as startling as it is nonconformist. Its climate adds to its charm, giving it a unique atmosphere that is bound to surprise you during your stop there aboard Le Soléal. Close by, the Zealandia nature reserve gives you the opportunity to visit several hundred hectares that are home to some of the country’s rarest animals, such as the kiwi, the famous little wingless bird with a long bill that is emblematic of New Zealand…

It’s in New Zealand that we invite you to begin your cruise to the great Southern land of Australia, known as the “Island Continent”. From the unique city of Auckland, Le Soléal will head North to reveal to you the most precious treasures of this vast, faraway land, including its cosmopolitan cities, the Aboriginal culture, and the legendary Great Barrier Reef, home to the most stunning underwater scenery on the planet.

ABOARD LE SOLÉAL FEBRUARY 18TH 2016 (15 nights) From 3 860 €See price list page 49.

NORFOLK ISLANDSituated between New Caledonia and New Zealand, Norfolk is a small volcanic island with many faces. Discovered by the explorer James COOK in 1774, it’s composed of undulating plains in the centre and high cliffs along the coast. In the 19th century this peaceful southern land was turned into a harsh penal colony. Today, the archaeological vestiges of this former colony are listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites and are valued for their historical importance. When your ship drops anchor here, do not miss these magical and mysterious sites, as well as the many houses in the English colonial style, recognised as Australia’s prettiest.

HIGHLIGHTS• Meet the Yirrkala Aborigines, an indigenous

Australian people with a fascinating culture.

• Discovery of the archaeological remains of former penal colonies of Norfolk, classified UNESCO.

• From Brisbane, discover the imposing silhouette of Mount Tamborine and enjoy a wine tasting at the Mount Cotton Estate.

• From Cairns, discover the crystal-clear lagoons of the Great Barrier Reef, the only ecosystem of its kind in the world.

• Optional excursion to Auckland, the home of the All Blacks and the America’s Cup.

• A Lecturer with expert knowledge will be on board.

BRISBANE Australians say that the history of Brisbane begins in the Dreamtime... long before the “white fellas” arrived, when the two Aboriginal tribes, Jagera and Turrbal, still lived on these shores. Today nicknamed “the green city”, Brisbane has successfully carved a solid reputation for itself and offers its visitors an idyllic setting amid lush vegetation. Cool and relaxed, Queensland’s capital offers the sparkle and glamour of a big city, subtly combining old buildings and contemporary high-rises. This new port of call allows you to discover the largest koala sanctuary in the world, with more than 130 specimens of these marsupials who seem asleep.

LE SOLÉAL: FEBRUARY 18TH 201616 DAYS / 15 NIGHTS

YIRRKALA Towards the aboriginal people A remote continent in the heart of the Pacific, a wild land of unrivalled beauty, Australia is home to an ancestral culture which has a wealth of art and traditions and is an integral part of the country’s heritage. During your stop in Yirrkala you will have the chance to gain some understanding of it and experience its magic. Located to the East of Arnhem Land, this remarkable small town is home to a community of some 850 Aborigines, most of which are Yolngu, an indigenous people that inhabited this land well before the first colonists arrived. During your visit, take a journey back in time by attending traditional ceremonies such as the “smoking ceremony” for a blessing, watching traditional singing and dancing, or visiting the Buku-Larrnggay Mulka Art Centre where a number of bark paintings are exposed as typical examples of Aboriginal art.

CAIRNS - THE GREAT BARRIER REEFIn the North of Australia, on the coast of Queensland, Cairns, the city of a thousand colours, is surrounded on one side by lush green hills covered in rainforest and on the other by the turquoise waters of the Coral Sea, whose splendour culminates in the vast expanse of the legendary Great Barrier Reef. From its tropical atmosphere to its pathways lined with mangrove, its fashionable districts and its many historical sites, Cairns has plenty of surprises in store for you and combines the advantages of a modern city with stunning scenery. Comfortably ensconced on the exterior decks of Le Soléal, you will be able to watch as its many colonial buildings and the picturesque port come into view, and enjoy an exceptional panorama over the surrounds of the city. This is an idyllic setting at the heart of a pristine natural environment.

The Indonesian archipelago is composed of a multitude of islands scattered across the unpredictable waters of the Indian Ocean. This mosaic of culture and colours offers travellers a dazzling variety of landscapes that are both fascinating and captivating. Farther on, Malaysia, that strange land of adventures and all-consuming dreams, will reveal its exotic lands, lush green jungle and vast National Parks.

ABOARD LE SOLÉAL MARCH 04TH 2016 (11 nights) From 3 050 €See price list page 49.

BANDA NEIRALike a pearl necklace set against a coral backdrop, the 10 small Banda Islands are dotted between Asia and the Pacific Ocean. From the age-old traditions of authentic cultures to ancient vestiges, traditional arts and crafts and, above all, powerful volcanoes, coral reefs and lush green jungle… The attractions of this remote archipelago seem endless. Better known as the legendary “Spice Islands” of the Ancient World, these small volcanic landmasses are covered with imposing aromatic conifers that produce nutmeg and mace, two precious spices. During your cruise, visit Banda Neira, the islands’ capital. Located on the main island of Palau Neira, this picturesque town proudly invites visitors to admire its rich and moving history, reflected in its architecture - a mix of forts, old cannons and beautiful colonial homes. Do not miss the visit to its little museum, which traces the history of these islands, as well as Fort Belgica, where you’ll find an exceptional view over the volcano that dominates the archipelago.

HIGHLIGHTS• Total solar eclipse on 9 March 2016, visible

only from the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

• Discover Banda Neira, capital of the Banda Islands, better known as the Spice Islands.

• Discover Ternate in the Maluku Islands, with an exceptional visit to the Sultan’s Palace and the oldest clove plantation in the world.

• Visit Sandakan, a natural paradise, and get close to Orang-Utans, those majestic primates with flamboyant orange fur.

• A Lecturer specialising in the Pacific Islands will be on board.

TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE ON 9 MARCH 2016 On March 4th 2016, board Le Soléal to observe a phenomenon few travellers get the chance to see: a total solar eclipse. That’s right, on 9 March the Moon will mask the Sun completely, leaving only a soft halo of light unhidden. It would usually be difficult to witness this exceptional event, as most of the eclipse will only be visible from a small part of Indonesia. Come and experience this magical moment, all alone on Le Soléal’s exterior decks as the ship cruises towards Manado. The shadow of the Moon will gradually cover the Sun to steal its limelight, and eventually the darkest of nights will fall, in the middle of the day. But rest assured: though this surreal night might feel like the end of the world, it will only last a few minutes as the fiery orb claims back its rightful place after vanquishing the Moon.

LE SOLÉAL: MARCH 04TH 201612 DAYS / 11 NIGHTS

THE MALUKU ARCHIPELAGOThe Maluku Islands, also known as the Moluccas, are an Indonesian archipelago composed of a thousand islands and islets scattered over 1,200 km, with idyllic landscapes of mountains and volcanic cones which are just as magical as ever. When Le Soléal stops here, set out to discover these faraway islands where people still live at an unhurried pace, close to nature, in the shade of the clove and nutmeg trees that brought wealth to these islands in times past. From coral gardens to impenetrable forests, long ribbons of deserted beaches and vestiges of fortresses from another era, do not miss these landscapes of a thousand colours, where guava, mango and coconut trees heavy with fruit add a tropical paradise flavor to your trip.

SANDAKAN - BORNEOOn leaving Sandakan, discover the Orang-Utan Rehabilitation Centre. Located in the North-West of Borneo, the protected reserve of Kabili Sepilok covers some 43 ha. The Orang-Utan is the only Asian representative of the great apes and this primate, whose Malaysian name means “man of the forest” is easily recognizable by its long arms and its flamboyant orange fur. Aside from mothers and their young, Orang-Utans are a solitary species that spend most of their life swinging from the tops of tall trees. Here, orphaned animals or those born in captivity are taught to live independently so that they can be returned to their natural habitat, which are always very moving moments. This reserve offers you the opportunity to admire these adorable creatures in their natural environment.

IMPORTANT INFORMATIONS

• Australia & New Zealand: Australian and New Zealand customs regulations are very strict, especially for the import of food items such as fresh food (even sealed), fruits, eggs, meat, plants, vegetables, seeds, grains. Fur and feathers are also forbidden. We highly recommend you consult this website for further details: www.customs.gov.au.

• Visas: Before departure, please check carefully that your visas are valid for the right date and time spent in the countries in order to avoid unpleasant situations.

• Sightseeing: Some places can only be visited on foot. Also, sites may have stairs or require you to take off shoes.

• Currency: Plan to have US dollars in small notes as they are easier to use outside of large cities.

• Medication: If you have a medical treatment, do not forget your prescription.

• Coaches: road conditions are poor in certain countries. Timings are unpredictable due to heavy traffic conditions. The comfort of coaches cannot be compared to that of international vehicles and often lack suspension.

• Guides : PONANT is aware that the quality of guides is of utmost importance and puts all efforts in place to secure the best local guides available. Note that guides in Asia often have heavy accents. Several of our calls visit small and isolated communities where resources (transportation and guides) are scarce, resulting in higher prices.

As you will be visiting some very remote and isolated parts of the world, resources (transportation and guides) are scarce and may not be of the standards you are used to. We ask for your patience and understanding during these truly unique experiences as we share the lifestyle and cultures of these seldom visited people and places.

EXPEDITION CRUISE IN SUBANTARCTIC ISLANDS OF NEW ZEALAND & AUSTRALIA

• This program is first of all an expedition.

• Given the inaccessibility of the area visited, it is highly recommended to choose your insurance company carefully. In addition, it is mandatory to return the medical questionnaire, provided at time of booking, at the latest 90 days prior to departure. This questionnaire is very important in order to respect mandatory safety rules in polar zones. Any false information on this questionnaire may lead to a refusal of your embarkation at the port of departure, without any possible recourse.

• Due to the exceptional nature of this itinerary, the calls/sites listed are only a guide. The final route will be confirmed by the ship’s Captain with priority being given to passenger safety. Pack ice may also force the Captain to change course at the last minute. His decision will be based on advice from expert pilots who are present on board during our cruise in Subantarctic Islands. Zodiac® landings or outings accompanied by your expedition team offer plenty of opportunities to discover and experience what Subantarctic Islands have to offer at close range. These will of course depend on the weather conditions, the ice, the wind and the sea state.

• A warm waterproof parka will be provided onboard (available for adults only). We also recommend you follow the clothing instructions and advice you will find in your travel documents.

INSURANCEPONANT is creating a new insurance and multi-risk assistance contract. Enjoy worry-free travel with our exclusive Ponant 5* Insurance policy, arranged through our partner, APRIL, a specialist in high-end travel insurance. This insurance will cover you on all our itineraries without exception, and for the full duration of your cruise. APRIL has been our partner for nearly 15 years and has plenty of experience in the type of problems that may arise. We are therefore offering to be the single and unique point of contact for booking your flights and cruises and also for managing insurance cover throughout your trip. The guarantees provided are subject to a surcharge of 4% incl. taxes on the total cost of your travel. The policy must be taken out on the day your cruise is purchased. Our sales staff are at your disposal to answer all your questions. To be eligible you must live in mainland France including Corsica, the French overseas departments, Andorra and Monaco, or in an EU country or in Switzerland.
