“My work at ______ is called Dirty Corner and has nothing to do with

X or her vagina. Perhaps it would be good for your correspondent to

use her eyes when looking at art, not her ears. There is no doubt that

the feminist argument must first be put forward by women, but from

where I stand men cannot and must not be excluded. What a shame

that narrow-mindedness has space in your journal.”

Whose recent letter to The Guardian about a controversial exhibit?

Also give us the location and X.

These photographs are developed using an old photographic process,

a successor of the ambrotype, in which you dip metal in collodion,

then liquid silver, which makes it light sensitive.

They need to be developed within ten minutes of being taken, so you

literally have to build a darkroom for every shoot. This process doesn’t

flip the image back as cameras do, so the pictures come out in

reverse.

Name this early photography technique, named after the Japanned

metal used in the process.

This is the Rietveld Schröder House designed by the architect Gerrit Rietveld. This small one-family house dates from 1924, and in 2000, UNESCO awarded the house World Heritage status.

Rietveld was a member of a movement that searched for a new ideal of harmony and order. Compositions were made of straight lines and primary colours, plus black and white, and this is probably the only building ever realised in this movement.

What is the movement and in which Dutch city, which sports fans will be watching for a grand departure in July 2015, is this located?

Angus Wall is a film editor with two Oscars (The Social Network, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo) and two Emmys to his credit. He won the first Emmy in 2004 for Carnivale.

His second Emmy is for an effort that involves three-dimensional models of fortresses and cities and buildings that are made from thousands of tiny gears and springs. This conceptual art involves a map at its core, and using only pencil and paper, an artist begins by transforming the city into a clockwork model, with mechanical diagrams detailing how the city will build itself in the title sequence.

The designs are handed off to the computer graphics department. One team member fine-tunes the shadow cast by the buildings. Another oversees the camera shots, adjusting angles and frames. The so-called smoke artist, adds final tint and color.

What did he win his second Emmy for?

In the next slides are two of the works in an exhibition titled “Riding

_________” by Tushar Joag, where, over 53 days in August-October 2010,

he took his 350-cc Enfield Bullet with sidecar from Bombay to Shanghai,

travelling across India, Nepal and China. The exhibition’s alliterative title

refers to the name of an animal in fiction.

During this journey, Joag made stopovers at two similar project locations in

India and China – both projected by the respective countries as hallmarks of

modernisation, and both have resulted in dispossession, environmental

degradation and attendant controversy.

Fill in the blank and name the two projects.

This Estonian’s most ambitious projects were realized primarily on the Indian subcontinent. In 1962, he received commissions to design a newly established institution in India, and a building complex in the eventual capital of a neighbouring country.

The former is constructed out of exposed brick, while the latter is made of concrete. Both works are marked by elemental geometric forms: circles, squares, and triangles. Each features huge open spaces that the architect, a true believer in civic democracy, thought would encourage freedom of thought, especially in the latter, where the people use the complex as a vast public park.

Name the institution, the building complex and the architect.

Max Ernst was one of the pioneers of a painting technique, whose name comes from the French word for “rubbing”.

It is a technique of obtaining an impression of the surface texture of a material, by placing a piece of paper over it and rubbing it with a soft pencil or crayon; the name is also applied to the impression so obtained.

Max Ernst also used another slight variation of this technique where he scraped paint from the canvas and this takes its name from the French for “scraping”.

Name either technique.

The depiction in this painting is wholly unlike anything seen in Western

painting – the central figure is highly aggressive, erotic and threatening.

Her frightening teeth and fierce eyes are not those of a stereotypically

submissive, cold war-era housewife, and the artist created her in part as a

response to the idealized women in art history, such as Ingres' Odalisque.

Also, the author causes the form to dissolve into the background, the

setting of which, the author described as a “no-environment.”

Regarded as the first Florentine painter, and the first “modern master”, his nickname means “bullheaded” – he is mentioned by Vasari in the Lives of the Most Excellent Painters…..

He was apparently so proud and demanding that if others found fault with his work, or if he found something displeasing in it himself, he would destroy the work, no matter how valuable.

His contemporary Dante, placed him among the proud in Purgatory and refers to him to illustrate the transience of earthly fame: “XX thought to hold the field in painting, and now Giotto hath the cry.”

Identify the artist.

The setting is the Gobi desert in western China. What is British archaeologist

Marc Aurel Stein talking about here?

“’Heaped up in layers,’ Stein wrote, ‘but without any order, there appeared in the

dim light of the priest's little lamp a solid mass of manuscript bundles rising to a

height of nearly ten feet.... Not in the driest soil could relics of a ruined site have so

completely escaped injury as they had here in a carefully selected rock chamber,

where, hidden behind a brick wall, .... these masses of manuscripts had lain

undisturbed for centuries.”

The manuscripts are now in the British Library and the over 300 paintings have

been divided between the National Museum in New Delhi and the British Museum.

This was a series by John Riordan, that ran in Time Out London from

2007 to 2009. The premise was that the visionary had somehow been

reincarnated as a London cabbie. Each week he would pick up a new

passenger from London's rich soup of myth and history and enjoy a

series of increasingly bizarre encounters.

John Singleton Copley was a brilliant artist in the colonies. He was the

go-to portrait painter, and he had a good ability to calibrate a person’s

social position well in his paintings.

He gained the trust of many wealthy families. Part of his ascendancy

was due to his skill of behaving like an absolute gentleman.

What was his other skill—something that nearly all his subjects

wanted, and something that he achieved with aplomb for nearly 15

years before even leaving American shores?

The reason for the sudden emergence of creative tattooing in the late

19th century in Japan is because the country put an end to the practice

of bokukei. Japan was the last country in the world to stop this

practice in 1870.

What was bokukei? What the reason for the emergence of elaborate

tattoos?

Tattoos were used to mark criminals.

When the practice was stopped, those with marks wanted to

cover them up, and that’s how the decorative tattoo art started.

The Boyce Company was issued a patent in 1912, for a model with a

visible thermometer, which measured the heat of the water vapour,

rather than the water itself. This was useful because most early

models did not have water pumps, but a circulation system.

The area on and around the exposure became the focus of attention

for artists, and have over the years featured red-Indian chiefs, marlins,

rockets, and ram’s heads.

In 1841, the New Hampshire-born John Goffe Rand, living in London at the

time, made something out of zinc and patented it (X).

In the early 1890s, Lucius Sheffield, a student from Connecticut studying in

Paris, noticed people of a profession using Rand’s invention. He in turn

informed his dad, Washington. Papa Sheffield was one of the most skilled

in his profession, and made use of his son’s recommendation (Y) combined

with an (earlier) invention of his own (Z).

To determine if a sculpture is of true X, and not resin made from a

casting mould there are two simple tests. Heat up a standard straight

pin to red-hot and push it into the bottom of the piece in question. If

the pin melts its way into the material then it is definitely NOT X.

The other test that you can perform is to scrape some material off

from the bottom of the piece. If it is real X, these shavings will have no

odour and will feel like talcum powder, slippery to the touch.

What is X, named so because of its greasy feel?

Five years ago, Christie’s held an auction of works by his friends

including those by Hockney and Rauschenberg, as well as works by

Picasso, Jeff Koons, Tansey and Thibaud. One of the highlights was this

piece (in pic) by a close friend.

This man made quite a pile through books, TV and films and painted a

chaotic picture in his works. A collector of 20th century art, and a bit of

a critic, he wrote the catalogue for a 1977 exhibition by this friend.

Made in 1440, Donatello’s is the only one showing long hair.

Verrocchio carved out his version 35 years later. Legend says that the

model was Da Vinci. Whether by design we don’t know, but he left a

certain body part unattended, and now historians debate where it ought to

be placed.

Then came the master another 25 years later. He used the finest from

Carrera. He dispensed with the body part altogether, instead choosing to

show a follow through action in some sense.
