ISLANDER

Letter To The EditorTo The Islander:

Using the C alooshahatchee asa sewer system may be a matterof indifference to the people ofTice or Russell Park, but it can-not be to the rest of us, particu-larly to the inhabitants of SanibelIsland, awash as we are in thepollution of that river.

Arguments, such as, that ithas been going on for ten years,or that the cost of correcting ithas gone up, are irrelevant andunconvincing, to understate, ex-pecially in view of critical chang-es in the ecology of the area ifcorrection is not made forwith.

If local areas perpetratingsuch pollution are unwilling orunable to effect correction of thesituation the rest of us must looknext to the County to take appro-priate action, without further de-lay.

Unless effective ac t ion istaken immediately by responsibleauthorities at all levels, the pol-lution problem in this nation, al-ready neglected far too long, mayfind us with nothing left to takeaction on in another decade

To The Islander:As a property owner on Sani-

bel and hopefully an eventual res-ident, and as one who has knownthe Islands for 15 years, I wish tocommend, and associate myselfwith Elinore Dormer's letter inthe Islander of Jan. 1.

are fighting valiantly to save themfrom being overwhelmed,,

Sanibel and C aptiva need high-rises like they need ten newbridges, and no doubt somedaythose who want the high-rises, ifthey are allowed to have the, willalso be clamoring for the bridges.

The fast-buck artists whodon't give a damn for anything ex-cept their own precious dollarsare on the rampage. The islands, their beauty, their serenity, theirwelfare and their preservation asretreats from the sick worldmean absolutely nothing to theseindividuals because they are sickthemselves « money sick.

They want to get in fast andget out fast and to hell with Sani-bel and C aptiva. And to hell withthose who want to preserve thepeace and quiet;-, already sadlyeroded, which still exists here.

As Mrs. Dormer so accurate-ly says, things are moving toofast for niceties. Feb. 10 is thedecisive Commissioners' meet-ing.

All those who love Sanibel andC aptiva as we have known them, and still in considerable degreeknow them, should write at onceto the Lee County Commission-ers, Fort Myers, against high-rises and in support of continuedstringent height controls on theIslands.

We don't need nigh-rises andwe don't need fast-buck artists onthese islands. Let them go wherethey are welcome — let themdespoil with their own kind. Thereare plenty of places in Florida andplenty in this whole money sickworld where they will be greetedwith open arms.

Lets don't let them in here,/ s / Allen Drury

To The Islander:Re: letter by Elinore Dormer,

1/1/70 Islander. Believe It! Shetold it like it is.

Recommended reading, Isiah2-3.

/ s / Donald L. Modrall

To The Islander:The people of Sanibel and C ap-

tiva are not trying to keep highrises out of all of Lee County, onlyoff our islands. Both islands arerepresented on our planning com-mittee. Only one r e s i d e n t ofeither island has ever publiclyopposed our proposed ordinanceto limit the height of buildings. Inorder for zoning to be completelyfair, each section of the countyshould be considered in the lightof not only its special needs butalso its desires. This is what de-mocracy is all about.

Our figures based on existingplans show that infinitely morepeople can occupy a small area ifhigh rises are permitted — tothe detriment of all. However, density is not the only consider-ation here. Esthetic values areextremely important. I havenever seen a rural communityretain its charming simplicity inthe shadow of high buildings serv-ed by a c r e s of paved parkingareas. We islanders c o n s i d e rhigh rises unsuitable, unattract-ive and undesirable for our com-munity. We want to keep F o r tMyers where it belongs — firmlyentrenched within its city limits.Once Estero Island was beautifulthen developers made it Fo r tMyers Beach. We are adamantlyopposed to becoming Fort MyersIsland.

Mr. Keathly is convinced thatpeople who own land here "wouldnot build another Miami Beach."He has great faith — so ve rycommendable for this time ofyear. Yes, 'tis the season to bejolly, but we won't be so jolly inthe Christmases to come if highrises ruin our lovely Sanibel andC aptiva.

THE ISLAND GARDENER

Many people destroy a goodsource of organic material andmulch by burning pine needlesleaves, according to the FloridaNurserymen and Growers Assoc-iation (FNG A). Both of these typesof leaves add an acid condition tothe soil and are very beneficialto azaleas and camellias. Whywaste something that you can havefor free?

Strawberry plants are comingalong well now in certain parts ofthe state, but they like o t h e rp l an t s are subject to fungusattack. If you have a home straw-berry garden, you may find someof your plants affected with asmall brown spot, circular inshape, and scattered randomlyover the leaves. This disease, called cercospera leaf spot, canbe controlled with a spray ofneutral copper. In addition to thisproblem you may encounter ber-ries that have been half eaten ordestroyed by some unknown fowl.Of course, the professional gar-dener knows that this damage iscaused by slugs or snails. Aboutthe only way to control slugs orsnails is by using metaldehydebait. This is available under anumber of trade names, so con-sult with your nurseryman orgarden supply store.

There may be a few azaleaspopping their blooms now, part-icularly some of the Belgium var-ieties. Azaleas need plenty ofwater and as is known by the old-timers, January can be a drymonth. The large amount of flow-ers produced give off loads ofwater, so you need to apply plenty.Don't drown them, however.

There are two problems en-countered with camellias, bothwinter and summer. The commonone is undoubtedly camellia die-back. This is a disease that showsthe symptoms of dead l e a v e shanging on a branch that has be-come entirely blackened by thefungus. About the only control isto prune off the dead branch, dip-ping the pruning shears into alco-hol each time a cut is made, andthen painting the wound heavilywith a pruning paint. Followingthis procedure you should spraywith neutral copper. The secondproblem is an insect called Jap-anese wax scale. This s c a l eforms a rosette-type growth, iscreamy-white in color, and is aslarge as a pencil eraser. It ismost difficult to control, but cy-gon or ethion will do the job. Oneother insect that gives you a prob-lem on camellias is tea s c a l e s .This is a white growth on the un-derneath side of the leaves, oftenmistaken for a fungus, but theFNG A says it too can be controll-ed by the two chemicals mention-ed. Repeated spraying may benecessary.

1-8-70EJC THANKS ALL

Edison Jr . College is verygrateful to its many friends whohave made possible a full andrich year. Visits by people fromother countries, other states, andother colleges have enriched ourprofessional as well as our per-sonal lives. And to those in ourown community who continue tosupport and sustain our efforts,we offer our deepest gratitude.

The support just mentionedwas very much in evidence duringthe last election when our votersdetermined that the state bondamendment was needed for futuregrowth . . . and you passed it.Many thanks to our students whowent out and contacted people intheir homes to tell them of ourneeds. At a time when many stu-dents are ready to tear their in-stitutions apart, we have a studentbody at Edison which is veryconcerned with building one!

RSVP: In memory of D o r i sCorbin, assistant business man-ager and wife of instructor Don-ald Corbin, passed away in Nov-ember but she will be remember-ed in a most appropriate mannerin the naming of the auditoriumin the Learning Resources Centeras the Doris Qorbin Fine ArtsAuditorium. Her interest in the

tts gave impetus to our fine artsprograms at the college.

New leadership: The Board ofTrustees approved the appoint-ment of Ralph Richard, presentlycomptroller of Florida TechnicalUniversity, as our new Dean ofBusiness Services to begin inJanuary, replacing Dean ClayErnst who will continue on infaculty status.

A New Year's message: Thoseof us who work in higher educa-tion are perhaps the "luckiest"people in the world. We have, inmost cases, an interested student

ISLANDERwho is about to assume his re-sponsibilities in an adult society. We are fortunate because we areable to observe from personalcontact what our future leader-ship in this state will be like.We see the seriousness withwhich many of our students viewtheir world and their efforts tounderstand it.

And from this contact withstudents comes the assurancethat they will make fine futureleaders. These students chall-enge each of us to be better teach-ers, administrators, and bettercitizens.

COPE MEETING

Please, don't end it when New Year'scomes. Please drive defensive-ly and enjoy another Christmasand holiday next year.

You read in the papers dailyof the many deaths on our high-ways. Neither Sanibel nor Captivaroads are a speedway, but somedrive as if they were going towhere!!

A PLEA TO MY SPOUSE

Some morning at low tide, pleasecome with me,

We'll stroll by the shell-ladenshore of the sea.

In the soft morning breeze palmfronds wave lazily,

While graceful seagulls will sur-round us hungrily.

The parade of the shrimp boatsgoing out to sea,

Is a glorious sight, I'm s u r eyou'll agree.

If you still will not heed my en-ticing plea,

How about breakfast beside thatbeautiful sea?
