Every expectant woman attending routine ante-natal clinics should be informed by experienced gynaecologists of the presentation of foetus in the 36thweek of pregnancy. The foetus’ head usually faces downwards (vertex position) as it prepares for a vaginal birth. But in about three to four per cent of pregnancies, the opposite occurs as the baby’s feet or buttocks are positioned at the birth canal. This is known as breech presentation which poses risks to mother and child during delivery.Dr Joseph Musana, a gynaecologist at Aga Khan University Hospital, who regularly deals with difficult pregnancies says: “In normal circumstances, foetuses turn to the vertex position as early as 28 weeks, with most rotating by the 36th week. In some cases, the baby ‘swims’ to the right approach late in pregnancy before labour.”“The presentation of a baby is detected by palpation where a doctor and a midwife feel the position of the head using hands. A confirmation of the position of a foetus is done by ultrasound.”“On realising that a baby is in breech position, the doctor may advise the mother to visit the clinic in a week or two for repeat tests. If there is no change in a foetus’ position at 38 weeks,

the mother is advised to go for caesarean section surgery as the safest method of delivery.”“Only five to eight per cent of women whose foetuses are in breech presentation turn just in late pregnancy, or before labour starts. The longer the wait for a baby to turn position, the lower the chances of a foetus rotating.”“A scheduled c-section delivery is usually carried out during the 39th week of the pregnancy, but some women resist the cut and insist on giving birth naturally. In such cases, the doctor may suggest the expectant mother to have an External Cephalic Version (ECV), also known as version, to help the baby turn before the due date,” says Dr Musana.“ECV is the controlled careful turning of a foetus from a breech position, or side-lying (transverse) into a head-down position before labor begins. When successful, the version makes it possible for a vaginal birth.”“An ECV should be done by obstetricians who are versed with ECV at well-equipped maternity wards with facilities such as a theatre, portable ultra-sound machines and a cardiotocography (CTG) machine which monitors a baby’s heart beat and a team consisting of a paediatrician, anaethesist and midwife,” Dr Musana says.

For two months leading up to the surgery, the woman had complained of abdominal pains. She had a palpable hard mass which was initially suspected to be cancerous. member of the board, said.He said that since the judges’ review applications were dismissed, the judiciary ought to have removed them from service.The magistrates have however, gone to court to

challenge the decision to send them home with their cases still pending.The board dismissed them on grounds of accepting bribes, poor knowledge of the law and its application among other inadequacies.

Candidates in Brazil’s pres-idential election yesterday took part in the first televised debate of the campaign. Incumbent President Dilma Rousseff went head to head with main rivals Marina Silva of the Brazilian Socialist Party (PSB) and Aecio Neves of the PSDB. No knock-out blows were reported with all the candidates displaying some individually strong moments. Ms Rousseff is ahead in the polls salted for October 5, 2014 although analysts predict it will go to a second round. The inter-ethnic clashes pitting the Garre and the Degodia clans of Mandera County is a spillover of similar skirmishes between the two communities in Ethiopia. Kenya may soon have a 24-hour economy with workers and traders operating round the clock.The move could provide employ-ment for up to 16 million jobless people.Dr Richard Sezibera, the East Africa Community (EAC) Secre-tary General, has asked regional private and public sector players to consider embracing the ideals of a 24-hour-economy to accelerate economic growth.The EAC boss, who spoke during the launch of regional retailer, Nakumatt Holdings, 50th branch opening in Arusha, Tanzania, at the weekend, said relying on 8 to 12-hour economic production cycle is slowing down growth.Sezibera said East Africa’s economy should not be shut overnight as rival economies operate round the clock.“At the East Africa Community, we are working hard to support economic development by clear-ing Non-Tariff barriers and we are actively working to encourage both the private and public sector to adopt a 24 hour approach to business and service delivery,” Dr Sezibera said. “Companies such as Nakumatt has played a key part in fostering innovative practices such as round-the-clock operations which can be easily emulated by other private and public sector players,” he said.

Nine out of every 10 internet users have highly sensitive information on their hand-held or smart devices. They are concerned that it may be compromised or exposed, digital security company Kaspersky has revealed.Kaspersky conducted an online survey between May and June of this year and gathered information from smartphone, tablet and computer users in 23 coun-tries around the world. “The findings were eye opening,” said Tony Bradley principal analyst with the Bradley Strategy Group, providing analysis and insight on tech trends.Approximately six in 10 respondents cited fears their personal data may be stolen, and roughly that same percentage claimed to be worried their devices may be used to spy on them and infringe on their personal privacy.Eight out of 10 people surveyed conduct finan-cial transactions online, and half of those people stated they also engage in financial transactions from

Farmers in Vihiga are using a new maize variety to curb a devastating weed commonly known as ‘Purple Witch’ or Striga. In an effort to save over 70 per cent of their infested arable land, a local group, the Mwangaza Farmers Group Organization (MFAGRO), which is offering extension services to the farmers in the county. “Many of our land was infested with this weed and

A recent report by Sabahi, an organisation that covers developments in the Horn of Africa has revealed that some vendors can sell up to 2,000 music CDs in a month for as little as Sh20 a piece.While Sh40, 000 is their gross income, operating expenses tend to vary with Sabahi experts noting that some

vendors spend Sh26, 000 a month to keep their business running. This means that their net profit is Sh14, 000.Most of these entrepreneurs have no fixed business premises and often display their wares on the streets. Kirinyaga Road vendor, Peter Mungai says they rely on volumes to boost their sales. The more CDs they can sell, the more money they can

make. He says he sells most of his stock on Sundays, when customers have the time and money to spare. Each of his CDs has 12 songs though some vendors have been known to sell copies with up to 100 songs each for as little as Sh50. Nairobi has about 100,000 street vendors yet Winnie Mitullah from the University of Nairobi’s Institute for Development.

Describe yourself to us; who is Diana Opoti?I studied Communications in Daystar University and became a senior content producer on the Patricia Show and later a Series Producer for Mashariki Mix. Afterwards, I started my own television series – Designing Africa. I run a fashion media communication agency, Artemis Media, through which I produce the TV show. The decision to take on fashion PR as a service follows the rapid growth of African fashion business.

What is your personal sense of style like?I love elegant classics – stylish without having to be trending. I am obsessed with prints – African inspired, geometrics; anything that’s printed and beautiful is likely to catch my eye.

Congratulations on completing two months in your 100 Days Chalenge. Why did you start this campaign? How did the idea come to you?100 Days of African Fashion was created to show the diversity of African fashion. I have researched the fashion consumer market and I was surprised at how many people were making assumptions about African fashion. I wanted to provoke followers to go beyond just liking to buying products. When was Day One of the campaign? Was it special? Day One was June 23rd. The day before was the special one. That’s when I made the announcement that I will be launching the campaign. The most significant day was day 25! I announced our quarter milestone and people were so excited for me – I realized the campaign was about more than just me.

Which designers have you showcased far?I have worn clothes by Chrsitie Brown David Tlale, Anisa Mpungwe, Thula Sindi, Doreen Mashika, Kiko Romeo, Mina Evans and Adele Dejak, among others. In addition,

They say that if you can sustain anything you set your mind on for 100 days, you can achieve your ultimate goal. Maybe this belief came from the ex-pression ‘giving it 100 (per cent)’. We spoke with Diana Opoti, owner of a fashion PR firm and host of a TV show on M-Net on her 100 Days (of African Fashion) Challenge.

You share information and also champion new designers. What is in it for you?Fashion labels ask me to push specific garments

they are launching for this season and they are happy to pay for the endorsement. Some

see me as someone who can connect them to brands – so without planning it, I am already running a small personal shopper and style concierge consultancy. It really is a win-win situation.

How did you get Martini to support your mission?My campaign message aligned well with their strategy to support homegrown talent and fashion is a great connect for their lifestyle

brand.

How have you managed to create a distinction between ‘work’ and ‘life’? It is impossible to spot me at any event that is not primarily about fashion – but even then, I am extremely selective of the events I attend. Work, for me, is actually fun – I’m paid to sit on fashion competition panels and I get to watch as new brands rise. As a devoted campaigner for African brands and labels, have you achieved what you had hoped to achieve?I have created conversations on what African fashion is—the variety of styles— and it is financially paying off. There is a demand for these brands and my primary mission is to see them get the attention they deserve. Where do you get your drive? I love beautiful clothes.

l pick a challenge that is meaningful to you and tell yourself that you’re going to make through this challenge consistently for 100 days. keep reminding yourself; it’s only one day at a time for just over three months. and once those days are over, you can choose to do something else.

l on a piece of paper, write down all the days from one to 100. note down what you will do for each day to honor your commitment. Flag up any flash points: how will you continue your challenge if you travel out of town? what else might get in your way?

l have a back-up plan if things go wrong. what if you fall ill and miss a day or two? How can you fit in a double or triple commitment the next day to get back on track?

l if you think it will help you to have other people hold you accountable, recruit some friends. if you think you need to keep this private, do that.keep a diary and use the numbers to stay motivated- getting past the first 10 days is the toughest part. once you’ve done that you won’t want to break your run. the more days you’ve got under your belt, the easier it gets.

The Algerian Football Federation has suspended football indefinitely following the death of Cameroonian player Albert Ebosse, who was hit by a stone thrown by fans.
