Small bus service fails to attractcommuters in KodambakkamBy Our Staff Reporter

The small bus service introduced by Tamilnadu Govt. maybe a hit in many parts of the city, but in Kodambakkam, it hasfailed to attract many commuters. These buses were introducedto interconnect inner roads with main roads and/or the nearestmain bus stand to help the commuters from not havingto walk long distances to catch a bus.

The routes chosen in Kodambakkam area are nothelpful to the commuters living in inner roads and havefailed to attract commuters, said a resident.

Residents in Kodambakkam have submitted apetition to MTC to increase the frequency and add moreroutes for the service. They said patronage wouldincrease if the bus cuts across more popular stretcheslike United India Colony and Viswanathapuram MainRoad. At present, residents of these areas depend onautos to reach the main road to board a bus or asuburban train. An MTC official declined to commentand said no change of route was on the cards and he wasnot aware of any such petition.

Private bank issuesfake currency notes

Investigation of a case offake currency notes led thepolice to a private bank’sbranch in Karappakam.

Police said that when awoman came to deposit Rs.50,000 in cash in a privatebank in K.K. Nagar, theofficials found that 500-rupeenotes totaling Rs. 27,500 werefake.

They immediately alertedK.K. Nagar Police Station.

Police officers questioned thewoman who said that herhusband, who is a business-man, had asked her to depositthe cash he had withdrawnfrom a bank in Karapakkam.

Police approached the saidbank in Karappakam andscrutinized the CCTV footage.It showed the woman’shusband pledging his jewelleryand withdrawing the amount.

The woman and her husbandwere later let off.

Police questioned the bank’sofficials as to how the fakenotes escaped their scrutiny.

Pursuant to theletter, the Corporation authorities repaired and replacedthe damaged structures. The frames of the structures forthe new swings and slides that have been installed aremade of stainless steel which will provide better safety and

On June 3, a resident noticeda 5-foot cobra in his compoundin the late evening.

Many of the residents gath-ered to catch a glimpse of thesnake. We also immediatelyalerted forest officials overphone.

The petrified snake had inthe meantime moved back intothe street and vanished into thedarkness.

The street has not been pro-vided with enough lamp postsand most of its sections remaindark during night hours.

The forest officials who cameto the spot had to use powerfultorches to search the street formore than 30 minutes beforelocating the snake and captur-ing it.

launched the helpline number2561 5086 for citizens to lodgecomplaints pertaining to non-registration or acknowledge-ment of FIR or CSR for a cog-nisable or non-cognisable of-fence at any police station inthe city.

According to S. George (Com-missioner of Police), though theCSR system was launched in1998, it was not being followeddiligently. Citizens fearing re-percussions avoided lodgingany compliant with the higherauthorities if the police per-sonnel at any police stationrefused to lodge or acknowl-edge the registration of a FIRor a CSR.
