PhilaU team designs space suits for NASA

Three 20-something women from Philadel-phia University seemed to take a page from Betsy Ross’ book as they de-signed the look of the new NASA space suit, Z-2.

ILC Dover, a Delaware-based engineering firm that works with NASA, was tapped to redesign the inner workings of astronaut suits. And it turned to PhilaU for help.

“[ILC] is doing every-thing for the suit,” said Muthu “Govin” Govinda-raj, engineering profes-sor at PhilaU. “And [the company] wanted to add the aesthetic sense to it to make it more pleasing. … You need something that looks good.”

To design the new duds, ILC officials chose three victors from sev-eral contending teams: Cassandra Burr, 21, a se-nior majoring in fashion design from Burlington, N.J.; Julia Mayer, 23, a senior majoring in me-chanical engineering from Quakertown; and Gabriela Canosa, 22, a se-nior majoring in fashion design from Lancaster.

“It was really different talking to [NASA design-ers], because they think totally different from us,”

Now, NASA has passed the final say to the peo-ple. You can help pick the winner by visiting www.jscfeatures.jsc.nasa.gov/z2 before midnight on April 15. NASA will an-nounce the winner this month, and a prototype will be available by the fall.

In Chester, a bereaved family was struck a devas-tating blow after a 4-year-old boy was killed in a car accident hours after his father’s funeral.

Karder Hardy, 4, was mourned at Murphy A.M.E. Church in Chester, Pa., on Sunday, where his father, Derrick Brown, had been eulogized and laid to rest on Saturday, reports say.

Brown was reportedly

an innocent bystander when he was shot to death in Chester a week ago.

Hardy attended his fa-ther’s funeral on Saturday morning and was in the backseat of the family car at 11th and Upland streets in Chester when he reportedly jumped out of the car to cross the street to his mother. A passing van killed the boy. METRO

Police are searching for 26-year-old Douglas Spady, also known as Douglas Casey, who they say sexually assaulted a 24-year-old man he met through Grindr, a hookup phone app.

The victim said the suspect met him at a Center City hotel on April 9, drew a gun and

sexually assaulted him. The suspect also alleg-edly forced the victim to withdraw $1,000 and purchase gift cards. METRO

Having an identity Govindaraj said the space program needs to set itself apart, because there will be competition from space tourists.

“And space tourists want to be a little more than an astronaut who is going there to do experi-ments,” he said.

Even branding may become relevant in the future.

“At some point in the future, NASA will not be the only space organization,” Govindaraj explained. “There needs to be some identity.”

Govindaraj added that the old ways are simply outdated.

“Before,” he said, “a fl ag was suffi cient.”

Burr said. “They’re more technology, and we’re more about the customer and how we speak to the customer, and so it was different translating our goals into their goals.”

But in the end, the

fashion elements were secondary.

“It was difficult for us because everything that we designed had to be functional,” Canosa said.

Mayer added: “Each part of the suit has spe-

Now You Know!

Uninsured and Underinsured (UM/UIM) Automobile Coverage are insurance that you can purchase from your own insurance company for relative pennies, to protect you if you are in an accident?

Uninsured coverage pays you if the driver that hits you has no insurance. Underinsured coverage pays you if the driver who hits you doesn’t

have enough insurance. With Uninsured/Underinsured coverage, your own insurance company pays you for the other driver’s fault.

Adding uninsured/underinsured coverage doesn’t cost much. Rejecting it could leave you with no recovery at all. Talk to your agent about adding UM/UIM. It is a benefit that pays you!!

Kensington . Slumlord’s former properties are heading to auction In just over two weeks, would-be real estate moguls will get a shot at 86 Kensington properties going up on the auction block — half of which will be sold regardless of price.

Madison Hawk Auc-tioneers is conducting the sale of properties formerly belonging to infamous slumlord Bob Coyle, who is serving prison time for mortgage fraud, and now owned by Kenpor L.P., at 10:30 a.m. on May 1 at First District Plaza, located at 3801 Market St.

But concerns persist among local elected officials that the homes won’t get the renovations they badly need and may even be auctioned off to new slumlords who could

are brought back up to code,” said City Council-woman Maria Quinones-Sanchez in a statement after Kenpor announced the auction plan in Febru-ary.

Last week, a letter sent to Kenpor from Quinones-Sanchez’s office expressed concerns about the auction process — for example, that in an auction format, financial institutions interested in acquiring properties purely as an investment may be able to overpower smaller local developers.

The letter also asked that bidders receive due diligence packets about city code and an expla-nation of requirements regarding the upkeep of the properties.

According to Madison Hawk’s website, all bidders will be required to put up at least $6,500 to commit to renovations and must buy a due diligence packet of legal documents. SAM NEWHOUSE

IT’S GOOD TO BE COLORBLIND

IN PHILADELPHIA Last month, I spent several days caring for both a white child and a black child. I’m white, and so is my 7-year-old son. I’m also a licensed foster mother, and we took care of a black preschooler for a few days.

We all went to Wal-Mart, the library and a basketball game at the local YMCA. Each time we left the house, I wondered about what people’s reactions would be. I was happily surprised there was NO reaction.

My experience made me grateful to be raising a family in the Philadelphia area, which has evolved so much in terms of race and acceptance in the last 30 years.

When I was growing up in Tacony in the ‘70s, the only black people we saw were on the El when

we went to Center City. There were only white people in my neighbor-hood and schools.

Now, when I drive through the Northeast, I see faces of every color. It makes me glad, but I know many people in the area have the opposite reaction. “It’s not like it used to be,” they say.

Perhaps all this talk about race makes me sound hopelessly naive, considering I am a white, middle-class woman. And trust me, I am VERY white.

I recently took a BuzzFeed quiz called “How Stereotypically White Are You?” The ques-tions included whether I have ever “eaten soup from a bread bowl,” “recommended an NPR podcast” and “had an ar-gument over a boy band.” I answered “yes” to all of

those. (And the answer to the boy band argument is ‘Nsync!)

Despite my naivete, the evolving — and improving — nature of racial acceptance in the Philadelphia area gives me hope. My son goes to grade school with kids of every color; one of his best friends is biracial. Our neighborhood has many mixed-race families.

It makes my heart glad to know that the next time I take in a foster child of color, we can walk together down the street in my old neighborhood of Tacony and not attract stares. And we will be sure to wave at the street where I grew up, which is now no longer just for white families.

A United Nations report said on Sunday that governments must act faster to keep global warming in check and delays until 2030 could force them to use little-tested technologies to extract greenhouse gases from the air.

The study, drawing on work by more than 1,000 experts, said a radical shift from fossil fuels to low-carbon energy such as wind, solar or nuclear power would shave only about 0.06 of a percentage point per year off world economic growth.

“It does not cost the world to save the planet,” Ottmar Edenhofer, a German scientist who is co-chair of a meeting of the U.N.’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, told a news conference in Berlin.

The report, endorsed by governments, is meant

as the main scientific guide for nations working on a U.N. deal to be agreed in late 2015 to rein in greenhouse gas emissions that have hit repeated highs this century, led by China’s industrial growth.

“We don’t have the luxury of time,” Rajendra Pachauri, chair of the IPCC, told Reuters, saying costs would rise sharply if strong action was delayed to 2030. “We will have to move quickly and with an unprecedented level of international cooperation.” REUTERS

Sebelius says she told Obama staying ‘wasn’t an option’

U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, who resigned last week, says she made the decision to leave and told President Barack Obama last month that staying on “wasn’t an option.”

In her first interview since the White House an-nounced her resignation, Sebelius told NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday that she and Obama first spoke about her future after Obamacare enrollment be-gan to show signs of recov-ering from its disastrous Oct. 1 launch.

Sebelius was respond-ing to speculation that the White House may have forced her resignation in a bid to open a new chapter

for Obama’s signature do-mestic policy achievement ahead of November’s elec-tion battle for control of Congress during the final years of the Obama presi-dency. REUTERS

No new pings . Fading signals add urgency to search for missing jet The search for a missing Malaysia Airlines jet con-tinued on Sunday, more than five weeks after the plane disappeared from radar screens, amid fears that batteries powering signals from the black box recorder onboard may have died.

Australian Prime Minis-ter Tony Abbott warned on Friday that signals picked up during the search in the remote southern Indian Ocean, believed to be from the black box recorders, were fading.

Malaysia Airlines Flight

MH370 disappeared soon after taking off on March 8 from Kuala Lumpur bound for Beijing with 227 passengers and 12 crew onboard, triggering a multinational search that is now focused on the Indian Ocean.

Search officials say they are confident they know the approximate position of the black box recorder, although they have determined that the latest “ping,” picked up by searchers on Thursday, was not from the missing aircraft. REUTERS

Ukraine has given pro-Rus-sian separatists a deadline of this morning to disarm or face a “full-scale anti-terrorist operation” by its armed forces, raising the risk of a military confronta-tion with Moscow.

Angered by the death of a state security officer and the wounding of two comrades near the flash-point eastern city of Sla-viansk, acting President Oleksander Turchinov gave rebels occupying state buildings until 6 a.m. to lay down their weapons.

“The National Security and Defense Council has de-cided to launch a full-scale

anti-terrorist operation in-volving the armed forces of Ukraine,” Turchinov said in an address to the nation.

He blamed Russia, which annexed Ukraine’s Crimea region when Moscow-backed former President Viktor Yanukov-ich fled after months of

pro-Western protests, for being behind the rash of rebellions across Russian-speaking towns in eastern Ukraine.

Russia’s foreign minis-try called the planned mili-tary operation a “criminal order” and said the West should bring its allies in Ukraine’s government un-der control.

“It is now the West’s re-sponsibility to prevent civil war in Ukraine,” the minis-try said in a statement.

It said it would put an urgent discussion of the “extremely dangerous” sit-uation in eastern Ukraine on the agenda of the United Nations Security Council.

Earlier, the American ambassador to the U.N., Samantha Power, said on ABC’s “This Week” pro-gram that the latest events in Ukraine bore “the tell-tale signs of Moscow’s in-volvement.” REUTERS

Opposition groups trade charges of chemical attack Authorities haven’t yet substantiated accusations made by both Syria’s government and opposition forces that poisonous gas was used during an attack on a village north of Damascus, Ambassador Samantha Power said on Sunday.

Syria’s state-run television blamed the Islamist al-Nusra Front for releasing chlorine gas in the village of Kfar Zeita on April 11, killing two people and wounding more than 100. The main western-backed opposition group said government forces used chlorine in the village as well as “poison gas” and pesticides in the town of Harasta. Outkast reunited on Friday.

There’s a lot of great mu-sic at Coachella. But part of the fun is seeing stars trade in their red carpet outfits for more bohemian looks at the three-day festival. Last weekend, celebrities popped up all over the desert, rocking out to sets — and some-times hopping onstage to lend their talent.

Coachella kicked off Friday night with hip-hop duo Outkast, reunited for the first time in eight years. “It’s good to be back,” Big Boi told the au-dience. The reunion was cut short, however, when a tech guy reportedly killed their microphones

about 1 a.m. — meaning they were unable to bring out Killer Mike for their finale of “The Whole World.” The audience was not pleased.

On Saturday night, new mom Gwen Stefani — who just gave birth last month — popped up onstage to join head-liner Pharrell Williams for “Hollaback Girl.” Stefani wasn’t the only bold-faced name to make a guest appearance — Nelly came on for “Hot In Herre,” Busta Rhymes for “Pass the Courvoisier Part II,” Snoop Dogg for “Drop It Like It’s Hot” and DJ Diplo for “Aerosol Can.”

Beyonce freaked everyone out when she appeared onstage for her sister Solange’s set on Sat-

urday night, even though she didn’t sing. That same night, Jay Z rapped along-side his former nemesis Nas for a few songs.

OK, enough with the music. It’s time for what Coachella is also known for: straight-up gossip. Hilary Duff showed up at the music festival with her estranged husband Mike Comrie on Friday. Meanwhile, Joe Jonas was seen canoodling with girlfriend Blanda Eggenschwiler (that name — please hold me) all weekend and Selena Gomez was spotted with her new besties, Kylie and Kendall Jenner.

As a pioneer in the world of African-American dance, Philadanco founder Joan Myers Brown feels a deep sense of responsibil-ity to the history in which she’s played such an im-portant part. “I’m also in-terested in the history of black dance that gets lost,” Brown says. “History skips over important black cho-reographers, so there has to be somewhere where their work is maintained. I’m 82, so after me who’s going to be responsible for this kind of archiving

of black work?”Brown continues to

add to the documenting of that history, even for her-self. In building a program around Ulysses Dove’s lit-tle-revived 1984 work “Bad Blood,” she had to dig deep to find information about the late choreographer. Philadanco brought in a dance historian and con-tacted New York’s Dance Notation Bureau in order to re-create the piece, most associated with the Alvin Ailey Dance Company.

“It was a mind-bog-

gling experience for me to find out all I didn’t know about him,” Brown says about Dove. “He was quite a unique person and most of his work was done in Europe, which happens with a lot of black artists.”

Brown titled Philadan-co’s new show, “Blood, Sweat, and Dance,” after the intense physicality of the Dove ballet. It’s not the only piece on the bill that will cause the dancers to perspire, however; it will be followed by “Bamm,” an energetic piece cre-

ated by Donald Byrd for the company’s 25th anniversary in 1995, and “Phila-delphia Experi-ment,” a recent dance by Philly-born hip-hop chore-ographer Rennie Harris inspired by the MOVE tragedy that Brown says will “end the show with a real wham.”

“I wanted to keep the momentum of the program moving with this excitement. But I thought people might get worn out by the time this is over, so maybe I need to do something nice.” Brown, on incorporating the less-frenetic “Suite en Bleu” by Gene Hill Sagan into “Blood, Sweat, and Dance”

We lost three cast members this year and added three people, so of course that changed the dynamic. … [It’s] not that there was anything wrong with the girls that left, they’re all really great girls. But I think some-times, you know, you need to shake things up a little bit. The show’s been on a very long time, and I think the influx of new, fresh opinions and styles is a good thing.

Did that make you feel closer to Vicki Gunvalson and Tamra Judge, now that you’re the veterans?I’ve always been closest with Tamra, out of every-one on the show. So that was the same. And Vicki and I have always had a very fond relationship.

‘Captain America’ fends off birds Marvel’s red-white-and-blue superhero soared to a second straight box office win in “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” beat-ing out new animated movie “Rio 2,” the story of a family of Brazilian birds on a trip to the Amazon.

Walt Disney’s “Captain America,” which set an April ticket sales record when it opened a week ago, pulled in another $41.4 million from Friday to Sunday at U.S. and Cana-dian theaters.

The “Rio” sequel from 20th Century Fox debuted with $39 million in ticket sales, according to esti-mates from Rentrak.

Global sales for the film, which cost $103 mil-lion to make, reached $164 million through Sunday, according to Fox.

The low-budget horror flick “Oculus,” a new film from “Paranormal Activ-ity” producer Jason Blum,

finished in third place, col-lecting $12 million.

The football drama “Draft Day” earned the No. 4 slot, grossing $9.75 million. The movie stars Kevin Costner as fictional Cleveland Browns general manager Sonny Weaver Jr., who races the clock to maneuver for the best play-

ers while dealing with up-heaval in his personal life. Several scenes were filmed during last year’s real-life NFL draft.

Rounding out the top five, the dystopian action film “Divergent” pulled in $7.5 million. Its worldwide grosses have reached $175 million. REUTERS

‘Alice’

First Run Features$24.95Like snowflakes, no two films of Lewis Carroll’s “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” and “Through the Looking-Glass” adaptations are the same. Each one picks what segments it thinks work best, then chucks the rest. Even among these, the 1988 stab by Czech stop motion animation legend Jan Svankmajer is unusual. It lacks the warmth and glee of most other adapta-tions. But it heightens the weird and the menacing several times over.

AN ‘ALICE’ TO TRAUMATIZE KIDS

Here’s one of the creepy sights in Jan Svankmajer’s Lewis Carroll fi lm “Alice.” FIRST RUN FEATURES

Here, Alice (Kristyna Kohoutova) is a dour girl who lives not in an idyllic countryside but in the depressing confines of a vaguely Communist-era Eastern European locale. The rabbit is a hideous stuffed beast who escapes through a drawer. Alice fol-lows him, finding herself in a series of drab rooms, where she meets gnarly puppets, living animal skeletons and other things that will traumatize young children. The episodes — including a caterpillar who’s a sock with eyes and dentures — are absurdist but frightening and uneasy.

‘Breaking the Waves’ Lars Von Trier’s pseudo-porno “Nymphomaniac” wound up being his fun-niest, warmest work. So go back to a time when he was really tough, i.e., when he had a dim Irish woman (Emily Watson) embark on sexcapades for her injured husband (Stellan Skarsgard).

‘Fill the Void’

One of last year’s most impressive debuts was by fi lmmaker Rama Burshtein, an Orthodox Israeli who off ered a loving but critical glance inside her cloistered world.

‘The Invisible Woman’ Ralph Fiennes’ fi erce look at Charles Dickens’ relationship with his secret mistress got a bit lost in

I can’t go an hour or so without checking my phone for texts and emails. It’s the fi rst thing I do in the morning. Am I an addict?

Generally speaking, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disor-ders defines addiction as a loss of control marked by reduced involvement in other activities, failed attempts to cut back, toler-ance and withdrawal. It defines abuse as a pattern of maladaptive behaviors, resulting in “significant negative physical, social, interpersonal or legal consequences.”

If one were to apply such criteria to smart-phone and email use, you and I and the vast majority of Americans would be working through the 12-step program. Consider the following statistics: As of January, an estimated 90 percent of Ameri-cans had cellphones, smartphones, e-readers or tablets. Of the ones

The most recent version of the DSM has been publicly criticized for pathologizing what was once considered normal human behavior. Should the DSM continue on its current trajectory, we could fi nd ourselves in a decade or so with a whole new set of technology-related diagnoses:

E-diction: A neurological dependence on email that signifi cantly interferes with sleep, work and relationships.

Ipho-bia: Fear of being without one’s cell phone for longer than an hour.

OCE (Obsessive Compulsive Emailing):A compulsion to check your email constantly to ensure you don’t miss and fail to instantly return an important message. On par with OCT (Obsessive Compulsive Texting).

E-pression: A low-grade depression caused by receiving mostly junk mail for two or more days.

Anxiet-E: Fear of receiving upsetting emails, or, alternatively, of missing important emails in your inbox with 6,000 messages, 300 of which are unread.

PTS-E: Fear of receiving yet another crazy email from your ex.

Insomn-Ea: The inability to disconnect from the Internet past your bedtime.

E-lapse: When you’re up until after midnight writing emails, after swearing you’d never do this again.

What’s behind our obsession? Instant grati-fication and intermittent reinforcement — there’s no greater incentive to keep sticking our hands in the cookie jar if we pull an Oreo out once every three tries. Mix in our depen-dence on mobile devices for communication with spouses, friends, children and work, and you’ve got one powerful prescription for a societal epidemic.

A quick scan of articles on this subject paints a rather insidious picture of our most prevalent bad habit: a rise in texting-related traffic accidents and fatalities, psycholo-gists weighing in on the impact of distracted parents on child develop-ment, Fortune 500 CEOs rendered powerlessness by their inability turn off their cellphones.

or vibrating; 44 percent said they slept with their phone next to their bed to make sure they didn’t miss anything during the night; and 29 percent

here are things you (and others) might consider:

1Becoming aware. Take inventory of how

many hours you spend daily texting or checking your emails. There are apps that can monitor incoming messages. You can also time yourself and record the results in a notebook.

2Setting aside specifi c times during the day

to check and return emails and texts. Alternatively, you might consider limiting yourself to checking your emails only a certain number of times per day.

3Declare email and text-free days. Let your

friends and colleagues know that every Saturday, you do not check emails or text messages.

The Academy of Natural Sciences at Drexel Univer-sity will be turning a ma-jor donation into serious thought about protecting drinking water. The three-year, $3.2-million grant is from the William Penn Foundation. It means that the academy will manage ecological-monitoring projects by national and regional environmental organizations in eight areas in the Delaware River basin.

An attitude of gratitude Does gratitude spike pa-tience regarding delayed financial rewards? One psychology professor at Northeastern University thinks so. Three groups were assigned different tasks. One group recalled an event that made them thankful. Another group thought about an event that boosted happiness. The last group considered events of a typical day.

Each group wrote about their recollection and made 27 choices about receiving money immedi-ately or a larger amount in the future. Professor David DeSteno concluded the more grateful group exerted less willpower when postponing imme-diate gratification.

Fred S. Goldberg has a hard time picking a story when he’s asked to tell the craziest yarn from his three decades in advertis-ing. “I’ve got so many stories!” he proclaims. And it’s true. He has seen, heard, and done things that make “Mad Men” seem like a trip to Disney World.

For instance, it was Goldberg’s job to convince John Wayne to hold a product in his hands while shooting a com-mercial. He asked him nicely. The very tall Duke looked down at Goldberg and responded, “OK, why don’t you get the package and bring it over here

and then bend over and I’ll shove it so far up your a— you won’t even feel it!” Needless to say, John Wayne never held the product in the spot.

Goldberg has plenty of stories like these from his years as a mad man. He doesn’t mince words in his new book “The Insanity of Advertising: Memoirs of a Mad Man,” which is filled with ribald tales.

When asked what he thinks about the TV show “Mad Men,” which began its final season Sunday, and the show’s depiction of the advertising world, he doesn’t have a hard time choosing his words. “They get the drinking and the smoking right, and they get the sex right. But it’s more of a soap opera,” Goldberg says.

He thinks the show doesn’t uncover the nitty gritty: “[It] has nothing to do with how hard it is to actually create innovative ideas and ads,” he charges. LASSE EMIL KRISTIANSEN

Sex appeals to letter writersRe: Features grievances, in list form, April 11-13, 2014 I cannot but wholeheartedly endorse letter writer Jennifer Matrone’s assessment of fashion magazine GQ’s supposedly “sexy” Miranda Kerr cover. All I would like to add is a reminder to everyone that when we look at images such as this one, what we’re seeing isn’t even a real human! Most if not all fashion mags use photo-editing software to remove even the tiniest imperfections and to make their models appear even skinnier than they already are, and I would be shocked if Kerr’s GQ cover image wasn’t an example of this. Not only

is this an unhealthy and superfi cial portrayal of the female body, it is an unrealistic and artifi cial one as well. CHARLES JONSSON, VIA EMAIL

I can’t help but picture the style and class of your commenter from Friday, Jennifer. Using phrases such as “happy hookers,” “slutty isn’t sexy,” and, the best quote, “s--- out apples and tofu,” I can picture what a graceful and well-spoken woman we’re dealing with. She had a point somewhere in there about sex appeal, but I don’t remember what it was. You stay classy, Philadelphia!MIKE DISCOLO, VIA EMAIL

So long Philly

76ers host C’s in home fi nale

The 76ers will close the book on the

Wells Fargo Center this season with a game against the Boston Celtics on Monday at 7 p.m.

Philadelphia nearly defeated the Celtics up north last week, and posted a victory

against them just prior to the start of

their 26-game losing streak.

On the five-year anniversa-ry of the death of beloved Phillies announcer Harry Kalas, Chase Utley made one of Kalas’ most memo-rable statements ring true, even eight seasons later.

“Chase Utley, you are the man,” Kalas said dur-ing a Phillies win over the Braves back in 2006.

Utley’s eighth-inning homer off Mike Dunn was the difference in the Phil-lies’ 4-3 win over the Miami Marlins. Utley led the Phil-lies with his bat and glove to a sweep over Miami. He was on base four times Sun-day and boasts the highest on-base percentage in all of baseball (.537).

“He’s a baller,” Tony Gwynn Jr. said. “I watched him from a distance and he was always fun to watch. His legs are underneath him now and he’s driving the ball to all fields.”

The key for Utley is health. Forget about age and ailments. Even though Carlos Beltran was 37 with bad knees in 2013, he was the best hitter in the

St. Louis Cardinals lineup that was two games short of winning the World Se-ries.

“I totally believe that if you’re a great player and older, you want that guy on your team,” Gwynn said. “Chase is a special ball-player. If he’s healthy, he’s going to do damage.”

Utley, who is hitting an even .500, says his health is as good as the smoking bat. “I feel fine. I’m just trying to find some holes and put the ball in play. It’s about trying to put the ball in play and execute.”

Kyle Kendrick, who pitched six decent innings, was almost executed in the fourth inning. Marlins catcher Jeff Mathis drilled a tracer straight toward

MLB. Chase Utley’s go-ahead home run lifts Phillies to sweep over Marlins Sunday.

Kendrick’s skull. Kendrick just got his glove up in time to protect his face and catch the bullet.

“I didn’t see it,” Ken-drick said. “I didn’t see it until the end. It was self-defense with the glove.”

After making the grab, Kendrick took about a three-minute break before facing the next hitter.

“I just wanted to calm down a bit,” Kendrick said.

The ball was hit so hard that it bruised the palm of Kendrick’s left hand.

“I was just lucky that it didn’t hit me in the face,” Kendrick said.

Utley didn’t see the ball off Mathis’ bat but he’s obviously seeing the ball out of the pitcher’s hands when he’s in the box.

“It’s going well,” Utley said. “But there is still room for improvement.”

It’s hard to improve when you’re tallying hits half the time you’re up, but Utley is in one of those zones. But he still talks about his team. For Utley, it’s always team first.

“We’re playing well as a team,” Utley said. “It’s all about having trust in the guy hitting behind you.”

Room to improve

Though the Phillies swept

the Marlins, there is still a

lot to be concerned about.

• Howard has made errors in each of the last two games, each leading to runs.

• The Phillies stranded 13 men Sunday. “I like that we’re getting on base like we are,” Utley said.

Resting Flyers fall in regular season closer

The game meant nothing. But the Flyers didn’t care.

The 82nd game of the season needed a shoot-out to decide who got 2 points, and when all was said and done it was the Hurricanes,

completing a series sweep with a 6-5 win Sunday. Philadelphia trailed 4-1 early but ral-lied in the second period to score three straight goals to tie the game at four goals apiece. And then, after a Hurricanes strike in the waning mo-ments of the third made it 5-4 Carolina, Wayne Simmonds scored with 10 seconds left to tie the

game at five and send it into overtime.

Cal Heeter was in net, giving rest to the injured Steve Mason and to Ray Emery with the playoffs set to start next week.

The Flyers will play two games in New York against the Rangers be-fore playing two at home in the opening round of the Eastern Conference Playoffs. EVAN MACY

It was emotional. It was impressive. And it result-ed in a three-shot victory to clinch a second green jacket.

Bubba Watson, who has been known just as much for crying tears of joy on the 72nd hole as he is for faltering down the stretch, solidified himself as a member of an exclu-sive group of golfers with multiple Masters champi-onships. It was the second title for 35-year-old in three years.

“I was telling my caddy coming up 18, ‘I don’t remember the last few holes,’” Watson said in But-ler Cabin just prior to get-ting his jacket from Adam Scott. “I was just hanging on. Walking up 18 was a little easier this time.”

Watson pulled away from 20-year-old Jordan Spieth, who held a two-stroke lead of his own early in the round.

“It was so much fun,” said Spieth, who was vying to become the youngest Masters winner ever. “It really was. Even if I didn’t show it on the back nine, I took it all in. ... It was a dream come true.”

Watson (8-under) was able to post a Sunday 69, rebounding after a bogey to start his back nine, one of just a handful of scores in the 60s on the final day of the four-day marathon.

Spieth was unable to piece together a single birdie after his seventh hole and slowly faded out of contention. The only others who had a chance to catch Watson, players like Jonas Blixt (5-under) Miguel Jimenez (4-under), Matt Kuchar (2-under) and Rickie Fowler (2-under), ran out of holes.

Golf. Bubba Watson put together a masterful Sunday en route to a second Masters title.

SOUTHEASTERN PENNSYLVANIA TRANSPORTATION AUTHORITYNOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING

FISCAL YEAR 2015 CAPITAL BUDGETI. The Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) will conduct public hearings in the SEPTA Board Room at SEPTA Headquarters, 1234 Market Street, Mezzanine Level, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 19107, at 11:30 A.M. and 5:00 P.M., on Monday, April 28, 2014. The purpose of the hearing is to consider the Authority’s proposed Fiscal Year 2015 Capital Budget and Fiscal Years 2015-2026 Capital Program and the projects contained therein for which financial assistance is being sought. The total amount of federal and state funds to be received in Fiscal Year 2015 will be determined at the completion of the federal and state budget processes. SEPTA proposes to submit to its funding agencies a program of projects for funding consideration. SEPTA’s final federal Section 5307 Program of Projects will be made available through the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission’s Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) and in conjunction with the DVRPC’s Public Involvement Process for the TIP.

II. At the hearings, SEPTA will afford an opportunity for interested persons or agencies to be heard with respect to the social, economic and environmental aspects of the projects. Interested persons may submit orally, or in writing, evidence and recommendations. Speakers for the morning and evening sessions must register by 12:30 PM and 5:30 PM, respectively, on the day of the Public Hearings.

III. Persons wishing to file written comments may forward them to the Director of the Capital Budget and Grant Development Department, 9th Floor, 1234 Market Street, Philadelphia, PA 19107-3780. Comments must be received by May 2, 2014, so that they may be forwarded to the Hearing Examiner. Comments may also be sent via email to [email protected].

IV. Individuals in need of a sign language interpreter should contact the Director of the Capital Budget and Grant Development Department, at the address listed above by April 14, 2014.

V. An audio version of the public hearing notice and summary will also be available through the Associated Services for the Blind’s website at www.asb.org and at the office of the Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped, 919 Walnut Street, Philadelphia, PA 19107.

VI. On or about March 29, 2014, members of the public may obtain a copy of the proposed Capital Budget and Program at SEPTA’s website www.septa.org or by requesting, in writing, a copy from the Director of the Capital Budget and Grant Development Department at the address listed above.

Flyers fans were given a taste of the future this weekend as prospect Shayne Gostisbehere was named Most Outstanding Player after scoring a goal and two assists in leading Union College to its first national championship with a 7-4 win over Min-nesota on Saturday at the Wells Fargo Center. He was credited with a re-markable plus-seven for his night’s work.

The entertaining vic-tory showed once again that David (Union has 2,200 students) can still

beat Goliath (Minnesota has 51,000).

“I said earlier this week we never looked at our-selves as Cinderella,” said Gostisbehere, whose next big decision will be signing with the Flyers or returning

to Schenectady, N.Y. for his senior season. “We looked at ourselves as Union Col-lege, and we’re just a team trying to win the national title. I guess we proved all those people wrong.”

While the 2012 third-round pick preferred sharing credit with the rest of his teammates, it was clear to everyone else he was the differ-ence-maker.

“I guess big-time play-ers step up in big-time situations, and that’s what he did,” said Union coach Rick Bennett. “He did it all game tonight. Guys are going to feed off that. The magnitude of this game, he brought it.”

Shayne Gostisbehere gave

little thought to his future in

• “I’m not really thinking about that right now. I’m just thinking about all the hard work we put in this year to get that right there. Just having fun with

my teammates right now.”

• “This is the biggest game of our lives, and he really stepped up,” teammate Mat Bodie said.
