Front cover. The Safari Supper by Vaughan Southgate

Editor’s Notes Cheer up Spring is on its way. The clocks go on one hour at the end of the month. For your diary, the sun made an appearance on the 16th February. The village continues to be very active. The Safari Supper was again a great success, thank you to the organisation of the Friends of Cople Church. This event has become a firm village favourite. The weekly quizzes in the five bells have a good following, but I am sure could accommodate even more people. Also, the book club has met and chosen their first book, again this venture was greeted with great enthusiasm. The highlight of March has to be the Pantomime on the 28th and 29th. Get your tickets now to avoid disappointment and inflated prices charged by ticket touts. At the time of going to press, Saturday evening is sold out but there were still tickets for the other 2 performances. Details are on page 9. On the 11th of March at 8pm, Steve Halton will hold a meeting in the Five Bells to outline a plan to develop the Millennium Wood at Water End. Details can be found in his article on page 19 and Lesley Cole’e piece on page 22. The wood is a valuable village asset but after 14 years it is now time to thin out the trees and create a habitat to suit both wild life and humans. The more people who contribute the easier it will be and the better the result. Another communal activity is the “litter pick” that is being organised by David Whitehead.– willing volunteers are needed please!! The winter storms have left us with plenty of work. The pick will take place on Saturday 8th March, starting at 10am and finishing at 12noon, meeting on Willington Road outside the church – remember to wear suitable attire, gloves and litter pickers will be provided. You do not have to say you are coming but it would help David to plan the day if you contacted him by Friday 7th March – 01234 838238. Although there are estimated to be only 310 households in Cople I have had to increase the print run of the magazine to 370 to satisfy the demand. It is one of life's mysteries where they all go. Last month The cover was meant to be in colour but the printers made their first error in 2 years and did the job in black and white. The pity is that the images deserved the colour treatment. Churchwardens’ Letter To date we have been able to maintain all the regular and occasional services at All Saints and the other churches within the Benefice. We are grateful to all the visiting clergy and in particular we must thank Mr Tony Elcombe who has assisted us at many of the services and attends almost every service to support us. We are also grateful to you the congregation for the support and help given in many ways. By the time this letter is published we will have interviewed the applicants for the post of vicar of the Benefice and we hope and pray that we are successful in finding the right person to lead us in our spiritual journey and who will become an active and valued member of our community. As well as the services we hold we will be running a lent course in conjunction with the other churches in the Benefice and with Willington Methodist church. The dates for March are 12th,19th,25th ,7.30pm at Willington Methodist Church. For more details contact June Shanahan on 831705. A complete inspection and servicing of the guttering and drains has just been carried out and some minor repairs identified, which will be carried out soon, weather permitting. Similarly the problem we have with the lighting in the church should be rectified soon, and thanks go to the Friends for paying for this. The ‘Police update ’on page 40 of the February issue of the Cople News reports the theft of a cash safe from the church on Christmas Eve. Although a theft did take place the perpetrators were disturbed by passers by and they abandoned the safe in church yard. We are most grateful to the passers by who by their prompt action saved the day. We must also thank the customers and landlord, Eamonn, of the Five Bells who turned out to assist. Calligraphy. We are still looking for someone to help with the updating of displayed , framed church records. It isn’t a mammoth task but we need someone who has this particular talent. Please contact Mike on 831207 if you can help. Bell Ringers. Our recently increased team of Bell Ringers continue to make progress and are now ready to ring at weddings and other occasions requiring their services. (subject to availability). We would still like to increase our numbers. If you are interested please contact Mike Vacher 831207 or just turn up on our practice night on most Tuesdays at 7.30pm and find out more before committing. With our best wishes June Shanahan and Mike Vacher

News from Cople Lower School

SCHOOL HALL/NEW LAND Our new plot of land at the rear of the school is currently being landscaped and the railings should hopefully be in place after half term. There is further fencing to be put in place, grass seed and a wildflower area to be planted and sheds to be put up, but it is all beginning to take shape and will be ready for the Summer Term. The manufacture of the school hall has begun and we are waiting for confirmation as to when it will be installed on site. I am hopeful that this will be before the end of term.

FORTHCOMING EVENTS Our school choir, consisting of a group of Oaks pupils, have been practising hard with Jill Ebbs over the last few weeks and will be performing at Bedford Corn Exchange on Saturday 1

st March as part of the Bedfordshire Festival of Music,

Speech and Drama in the small schools choir class. A letter will be sent out separately regarding the arrangements for the children taking part.

Rotakids will be running their second fundraising afternoon at the village hall on Thursday 27

th February at 2pm. This will be along similar lines to their ‘Happy

Thursday’ event in July with refreshments, games and entertainment, but this time with a French theme. All are welcome.

Mothers Union

At our meeting in February, our 4 new members Eileen, Hazel, Joy and Pat, were enrolled into the Mothers Union by our Deanery Chaplain, Rev Janet Humphries.

Janet then tested our knowledge of the Bible with a quiz. Members had to think of people, places, plants and food found in the Bible, based on a particular letter of the alphabet. Afterwards refreshments were served.

MU members will be taking part in the Women's World Day of Prayer service on Friday 7 March at 7.30pm in Willington Church. This year's theme will be Streams in the Desert and has been put together by the Egyptian Committee.

Our Lady Day service will be held this year at Potton Church on Tuesday 25 March at 7.30pm. All branches in the Deanery will parade their banners and there will also be a Bring and Buy. Lifts will be arranged nearer the date of this service.

Mothering Sunday

Lord we ask your blessing today especially for all mothers. We remember all grandmothers and great-grandmothers;

all mothers whose children have left home; all mothers of children at schools and colleges; mothers of young children and babies; mothers to be, and our daughters who will be the mothers of the future.

Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Tuesday Club

Amanda Cullens gave a talk about "Chums" which is a child bereavement trauma and emotional well being service offering support to children, young people and their parents or carers. "Chums was established around 15yrs ago, based in Bedfordshire and delivered on behalf of the NHS. "Chums" is partly funded by the NHS and has 90 Volunteers who under take ten weeks of training. 36 staff are paid by NHS.

"Chums" aim to improve and promote positive mental health and emotional well being in children and young people from birth to 18 years! They provide a trauma support service to children and young people who have experienced a severe traumatic reaction to the death of someone close and is delivered by a consultant psychologist. They also offer neonatal support.

Grief has a huge impact on a child or young person which is hard to manage. Timely intervention from "Chums" can make a real difference to help them process some of their thoughts and share their feelings gaining valuable support at a difficult time. They have developed creative ways of supporting children individually and in, workshops, residential weekends, family days out, home visits and a remembrance service.

Thank you to our Tuesday club members and guests for generously "Bringing" and "Buying" the proceeds of which was given to Amanda to support such a invaluable service to our community.

Wild about Cople Ponds. . . ponds are good places; both for wildlife and for humans. Many ponds in the wild are suffering from lack of management, pollution and degradation (although a greater awareness of the richness and variety of ponds, their wildlife and wetlands in general, has resulted in a gradual improvement in the lot of ponds generally). However, many new ponds have been established and many old, neglected ponds have been improved and are now rich and diverse places. Meanwhile, in our gardens, the popularity of ponds has soared, to the extent that many garden ponds have replaced the more traditional field pond as a place of haven and sources of habitat for our beleaguered wildlife. And that includes all those familiar and much-loved animals of our childhood – frogs, newts, toads and those jewels of the waterside – the damselflies and dragonflies. Ponds provide a link right back to our childhood too; back to those times when we went ‘pond-dipping’, with eagerly clutched net and jam jar. I was always messing about in ponds and used to come back with watery treasures of all kinds including tadpoles, newt larvae (or efts), diving beetles, water boatmen and all kinds of other excitingly caught creatures. In fact, pond dipping provides one of the great childhood pleasures – and one that our children today should not be denied either. Those of you of a certain age will remember the slogan ‘Put a Tiger in Your Tank’ (I can only faintly recall it’!) – perhaps we should have a slogan today that reads ‘Put a Pond in Your Garden’! And by putting a pond in your garden you will be bringing endless pleasure, rewards and wildlife right into your own garden. They are relatively easy to install with a huge choice of sizes, shapes and styles. They can be made quite safe, with modification, even for young children and will almost instantly attract a huge range of wildlife; everything from frogs and newts to water skaters, dragonflies and damselflies. And that’s not counting all those amazing creatures that can only be seen through a microscope or hand lens – everything from water bears, rotifers and one-eyed Cyclops to single-celled organisms whizzing about in a drop of pond water. Plant up your pond with submergent and emergent plants and plant the edges with a range of wet and marsh-loving species and you will add even more colour, diversity and wildlife to an ever-increasing source of delight in your garden. Even the smallest pond such as an old sink can provide endless pleasure and be valuable for wildlife. More on ponds can be found here: http://www.freshwaterhabitats.org.uk http://www.bbc.co.uk/nature/23329548 One important thing to remember – if you want a pond for wildlife only (which I would recommend) please don’t add fish as they will eat all the wildlife and greatly reduce the biodiversity value of the pond. I’m writing this during the gales and heavy rains of early February but, despite this weather, spring is coming on apace and the gardens are seeing clusters of early crocuses and daffodils spearing up through the grass. The evenings and mornings are getting lighter and more and more birds are joining the slowly swelling dawn chorus. Listen out now for blackbirds, song thrushes, robins, dunnocks, greenfinches, mistle thrushes and chaffinches in the village and skylarks and corn buntings in the fields and hedges. By the time you are reading this we may even be hearing the very first of the early spring-bringers, the first of the migrant birds that will be arriving here soon

Page 19: 201403

19

from Africa and the Mediterranean – birds such as the Chiffchaff (which shouts its name from the trees and woodlands in very early spring) and the Wheatear (a very dapper, upright bird, dressed and black, white, brown and cream) which can be seen on the open ploughed fields around the village in late February/early March as it makes its way northwards to breed on northern mountain-sides and fells. Finally, as you can read elsewhere in the magazine, we would like to run the small wood at Water End, Cople as a community-run woodland project. The wood is getting very overgrown and will end up being a very dark, uninteresting wood unless some management is carried out soon. I’m hoping that we can get some regular work parties working in the wood to open up the rides, create warm, sunny clearings (for butterflies and other wildlife) and have a range of diversity of trees of all ages and structures rather than the current, tightly packed and dense plantings. We could even introduce woodland wildflowers such as bluebells and wood anemones to cover the woodland floor. This will greatly improve the wood for all and make it a special and valued place. I am writing a management plan to guide us and those who help could also benefit through a supply of firewood (after habitat piles have been created!) and some benefit to your health through physical working! Work in the wood will only be done outside the bird nesting season (ie; Oct – Feb) and this would be run as a joint project between local people, Cople Parish Council and The Woodland Trust. There will be a meeting on Tuesday 11th March, 8pm in The Five Bells if you want to find out more and are interested in helping. Steve Halton [email protected]

Cople Parish Council & The Millennium Wood

As some of you may know there is an 8 acre wood in Water End, this is known as the Millennium Wood. It was originally farmland but was sold in 1999/2000 and subsequently planted with various trees etc, hence it’s name Millennium Wood. At present the wood is owned and managed by The Woodland Trust, however as anybody that has walked through the wood will know they only carry out very basic management, this currently consists of the grass on the ‘ridings’ or tracks being cut during the summer months. As a consequence of the limited maintenance of the wood the brambles, shrubs and trees are starting to encroach onto the tracks making the whole wood appear very overgrown, with some trees starting to die back because of a lack of light etc.

The Parish Council are minded to take over the management of this wood to create a Community Woodland – something for everyone, as well as the wildlife, to enjoy and benefit from all year round. If you’ve read Steve Halton’s, Wild About Cople article in this magazine you can see how an expert sees this area’s potential for improvement, this vision is mirrored by the Parish Council as it could be a very valuable asset for the village if it was managed on a regular basis – Steve has agreed to share his knowledge and experience with us and help with the running of the project should it go ahead.

In order to take over the management of the wood it would need to be run as a joint project between local people, Cople Parish Council & the Woodland Trust. However before we can take this any further we need to hear from residents who would be willing to become part of a team of willing volunteers who could help with some of the management on a regular basis – to be known as ‘The Friends of Cople Millennium Wood’. Therefore we plan to hold a meeting on Tuesday 11th March 2014 at 8pm in the Five Bells so that we can share our thoughts and perhaps hear yours, as well as taking details of those who would like to offer their help. If you’d like to volunteer but can’t make this meeting then please contact myself – Lesley Cole, 01234 838975, or Steve Halton - [email protected].

The Safari Supper in mid-February was enjoyed by a lively crowd of people who were able to navigate their way around the village without being buffeted by the high winds which had threatened to make progress difficult earlier in the week. Once again our grateful thanks go to the organisers, to all those villagers who kindly opened their houses and provided delicious cuisine, to those who provided a dessert or gave raffle prizes, - in fact, to everyone who came and contributed much in the way of sparkling conversation and good humour. Gardening tasks for March After one of the wettest starts to the New Year in history, many gardens have been resembling Atlantis recently although it never ceases to amaze me at just how adept the natural world is at recovery from anything thrown at it. Even the daintiest of flowers are already appearing: Violets, Iris, Narcissi to name a few are all bursting forth but I have also seen some unusual sights already this year. My own Handel rose is festooned with greenfly which incredibly, I first noticed on Christmas Day! Many a lawn had Daisies in it this January and I have even had half a dozen small tortoiseshell butterflies on the inside of my windows since the onset of 2014! As I sit at my desk writing this, it is mid-February and after yet more wind and yet more rain, it is actually feeling like a spring day with warmish sunshine doing its best to both dry the ground and coax further plants into flowering. So before the gardening year really gets into swing, now is the perfect opportunity to get equipment maintained so it won’t let you down just when it is needed most. If you have any petrol run equipment, now is the time to get it serviced and Cople-based Groundcare Machinery Services are expert in this regard, whether it be lawn mowers, strimmers, or hedgetrimmers. I also give them my sheers and loppers to sharpen and it’s always a joy to use them just after when they make light work of anything that comes my way! If you have any hand tools that are beyond repair, Willington-based Frosts are running a Tool Swap throughout the month of March. Simply take in your old spades, forks etc. and get a 20% off voucher to buy new replacements. Whilst there, can I suggest you take a squizz at their impressive range or seeds and get sowing. Nothing in gardening is more gratifying than growing your own plants and the choice is incredible. The answer to last month’s just for fun question is, primroses are so called because they are amongst the first plants to flower! This month’s question is what plant do we get tea from? As usual, please contact me with any gardening tasks or queries you may have, [email protected] or tel: 01767 627 581. Lawn Doctor

Cople Parish Council The Parish Council met on 20th January 2014 as part of it’s programme of bi-monthly meetings.

Councillor Stephen Moon provided an update on details from the Borough Council – one of which that may be of interest concerned the programme for the upgrading of broadband in the area by BT – this area falls into Phase 3 which should be completed in January 2015. Full details though can be found on the Borough Council website along with a postcode checker.

Mike Vacher provided an update on Neighbourhood Watch, although there was nothing really to report back on this. We currently do not have a Neighbourhood Watch co-ordinator for the village, so if anyone is interested in taking this role on please contact the parish council.

Current issues that were discussed consisted of the following;

Nominations for Buckingham Palace Garden Party – parish councils’ are able to nominate a chairman to attend, this was agreed.

Bedford Borough Local Plan 2032 – relates to the continued development for housing in the area and contains 5 different options for the borough, some of which could have an impact on the village if they are taken forward. This is at the consultation stage at present, the Borough Council are asking for comments from local residents – full details can be found on the Bedford Borough Council website – www.bedford.gov.uk/localplan2032 - consultation lasts until 24th February 2014.

Bedford Borough Economy & Employment Land study

A litter pick is once again being organised for the village – willing volunteers are needed please!! This will take place on Saturday 8th March, starting at 10am and finishing at 12noon, meeting on Willington Road outside the church – remember to wear suitable attire, gloves and litter pickers will be provided. Anyone wishing to attend should contact David Whitehead, by Friday 7th March – 01234 838238.

Traffic calming – the PC agreed that before this could be taken any further they needed to ascertain whether there was indeed a problem within the village, although all feel there probably is, no hard facts are known on exactly which areas have the main problems. Therefore in order to establish traffic flow etc it was agreed that the installation of monitoring equipment should be pursued.

There continue to be some ongoing Highways issues which still do not appear to have been resolved and Councillor Moon agreed to take these forward with the Borough Council.

The play area at the Village Hall – the PC are in discussion with the Village Trust on ways this can be improved.

In addition to the above the PC also discussed the area currently known as the Millennium Wood in Water End, a separate article concerning this follows in this magazine. As previously mentioned the parish council are exploring the options for taking over the management of this wood and would like to seek the views of residents particularly those willing to volunteer to help with the management. Please read on for further details.

Full minutes of this meeting can be found on the Cople website along with contact details for the Parish Council if you have any issues or concerns that you wish us to take forward for you.

The next meeting will take place on Monday 17th March 2014 – members of the public are welcome to attend.

Lesley Cole On behalf of Cople Parish Council

Sally’s Tax Corner Well as we fast approach the end of another tax year – 5th April 2014 – there are a couple of things to consider for the self employed or for limited companies with a March year end. Now is a good time to buy capital equipment – ie – that new Van / laptop / machine that you have been considering. This is because if you purchase that item towards the end of the tax year you get the tax relief sooner. So basically it means that the transaction falls into the end of this year, so you get the full capital allowances in the tax year, as opposed to buying a capital item at the start of the tax year, then you will have to wait until after 5 April 15 to claim your capital allowances. Capital items cannot be expensed (offset against profit) in your accounts, so capital allowances need to be claimed instead. There is currently an allowance called the Annual Investment Allowance which is currently £250,000. (This was increased from £25,000 for 2 years from 1 Jan 2013 so it won’t stay this high for long) This allowance means that businesses can claim 100% of the cost of capital plant and machinery (NOT cars!) against its profits. So - buying that piece of capital equipment in March will lead to a good tax saving (It becomes the same effect as if you did expense all of it) – example time! Self employed trader who turns over £40,000 and makes a taxable profit of £20,000 in the tax year to 5th April 2014. The tax due on that - payable in Jan 15 will be £3,228 (Inc Class 4 NI) If this trader had bought a new van and a machine in March which cost a total of £9,500 then still making £20,000 of profit, his tax payable in Jan 15 would be £473 (Inc class 4 NI). So buying this capital equipment leads to a tax saving of £2,755. You can claim capital allowances on plant and machinery that you own – not leased or hired – even if you are buying them over a hire purchase deal. HMRC do not care about how you finance capital items but you do have to be the owner of them. If you do HP a new van then you can also claim the HP interest as a tax deductible expense through your accounts. If you want any more info then please do get in touch. Tax fact A new Tax year brings new personal allowances and tax rate bands these are as follows 2014 – 2015 Tax year Personal Allowance - £10,000 ie- the amount you can earn before paying tax Personal Allowance > 65yrs - £10,500 20% Basic rate band on income £0 - £31,865 40% Higher rate band on income £31,866 - £150,000 45% Additional rate band on income over £150,000 You start to lose your personal allowance on income over £100k - £1 of personal allowance for every £2 of income over £100k – so by £120k – its gone! I hope you find this helpful this month, please do get in touch with any questions. Sally Cobban FCCA SJ Tax Limited
