Washington DC5 Reasons to Love Gay DCWelcome to the “gayest city in America” – at least, according to the New York Times and The Advocate. We think they’re absolutely right: Here, the LGBT community is out and proud, celebrating events like Capital Pride every June, as well as hosting a plethora of other LGBT-themed gatherings and festivals throughout the year. That’s because DC is nestled in one of the most LGBT-friendly regions in the country, and with 17 openly gay elected officials, DC enjoys a fabulously gay-friendly city government. Here are just a few more reasons to love the gayest place in America.

The entire region welcomes same-love with open arms. In fact, same-sex marriage is legal in DC, Maryland and Delaware.

01 GEt MARRIED

According to hot coverboy Chase Maggiano, DC is the second-biggest theatre town in the country (see page 19 for suggestions). Showtunes, anyone?

While rainbow flags and LGBT revelers are out and about in nearly every corner of DC, the Dupont Circle, Logan Circle and U Street neighborhoods are home to a bulk of DC’s burgeoning LGBT community.

As home to the 6th-largest metropolitan-area gay population in the country, the Washington region brims with endless possibilities for LGBT travelers – and interesting people to meet.

The American College of Sports Medicine recently ranked DC as the second-fittest metro area in the nation—we’re talking a lot of ripped abs and glistening pecs.

DC: Culturally Queer

A seat of power for over 230 years, Washington, DC, brims with history and culture, much of it related to the experiences and struggles of the LGBT community. So regardless of what you’re “into,” Washington has just the thing for you. Art? Sculpture? Music? Big, pointy objects? It’s all here.

1: Gender-Bending Art Get a crash course in creativity at the National Museum of Women in the Arts (1250 New York Ave., 202-783-5000) and explore the works of remarkable female artists from around the world

2: Buff Up On Your History A bit lacking in the world history department? Then flex those brain muscles at the 19 Smithsonian Museums (www.si.edu) spread throughout the city spotlighting art, sculpture, history, technology and more.

3: Legalize Gay While DC may be the gayest city in America, the Supreme Court (1 First St. NE) might as well be the gayest building, in fact, the Court’s pro-marriage equality rulings striking down DOMA and California’s Prop 8 in 2013 paved the way for sweeping reform across the nation.

4: Showtunes? Here Are The Experts With over 300 members and more than 60 performances each year, you’re sure to catch a showstopping number (and probably a nice shimmy or two) from the Gay Men’s Chorus of Washington, the largest gay chorus in the country (gmcw.org).

5: “It Looks Like A Gigantic…” Ok, you know why this standing-at-attention landmark is so iconic. Point is, the Washington Monument (215th St. NW) is not to be missed on a trip to DC, especially since it’s reopening in summer 2014 for the first time in nearly three years following extensive restoration.

5 To-Do’s that Won’t Break the Bank

1: the view of the National Mall from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial is both stunning and romantic. From that vantage point, you can see the Washington Monument, as well as the Capitol in the distance. Visit early to watch the sun rise over the Capitol dome.

2: With gay rights still at the forefront of political discourse, be sure to sit in on the next Supreme Court ruling when it’s in session between October and April. Seating is limited, but there are plenty of exhibits and a 25-minute film to keep you busy while you wait (supremecourt.gov)

3: Located less than a mile east of the U.S. Capitol and just a block north of Pennsylvania Ave., Eastern Market houses a variety of local vendors peddling delectable wares. On weekends, vendors pitch tents on the sidewalks and offer an array of fabulous items, from colorful soaps and scarves to fresh vegetables.

4: Capital Bikeshare is a fun alternative to walking for out-of-towners who want to explore the city on their own terms. Visitors can purchase a one-day or three-day pass (capitalbikeshare.com).

5: Need to burn off that big meal from the night before? Then take a run around the Tidal Basin near the Jefferson Memorial. The water and vistas of the city’s monuments are stunning any time of the year. In spring, the area is festooned with pink cherry blossoms.

...of Washington’s Fabulously Gay Arts Scene

Chase Maggiano Takes You on Tour...

Suave, 29-year-old Chase Maggiano plays a French violin fashioned in the 1860s and, since late 2013, has served as the executive director of the Gay Men’s Chorus of Washington. So, if you can’t already tell, he has a thing for music and the arts. That’s precisely why he loves Washington so much, he says: “The fabulously gay-friendly arts scene is pervasive in the city, a trait that’s too-often overshadowed by the political pomp of the nation’s capital.”

Even so, the arts scene thrives in Washington –just take the Chorus itself as an example. “Our audience gives you an indication of just how gay-friendly Washington is,” Chase says. “We did a survey, and a third of the people who come to our performances are straight.” In fact, the GMCW is the largest gay chorus in the country – counting more

than 300 members and boasting a playbill exceeding 60 performances a year.

“Arts feed my soul,” Chase says – so it’s no wonder he’s been a musician his entire life. And while Chase knows a thing about showtunes, strings and bearish baritones, he’s also an expert DC denizen, having lived in and around the nation’s capital his entire life.

Few know, for example, that DC is actually the largest chorus town in the country. And it’s the second-largest theatre town next to New York. “Here, the LGBT community and the arts really go together,” Chase says.

That’s your cue to join Chase on a tour of Washington’s vibrant, fabulously gay arts scene. Take a look at his favorite Washington arts scene picks.

Date Night1905 Bistro (1905 9th St. NW 202.332.1905 1905dc.com) boasts class American-style food and a fun rooftop bar, and the quiet restaurant atmosphere is ideal for a date night, according to Chase.

Page 19: 2014 Washington DC Navigaytour

Work the Glutes“Running is a great

way to see the city,” says Chase, who

frequently runs marathons himself.

A jog around the mall will do the trick

– take in views of the Smithsonian,

Capitol and multiple monuments.

Chase Maggiano’s Picks: Catch a Show

Chase says, “Move over, Broadway: The DC theatre scene is booming.” In the nation’s capital, more than 2.2 million theatre tickets are sold each year at dozens of colorful venues, ranging from thousand-seat arenas to intimate stages. Either way, if you’re looking for a show outside of the Big Apple, DC is your best bet.

Kennedy Center 2700 F St. NW 202.416.8000 | Kennedy-Center.org The Kennedy Center is a must-see attraction for any theatre lover. According to Chase, “They show almost every kind of art imaginable.” Plus, daily shows at the Center’s Millennium Stage are free and open to the public.

Lisner Auditorium 730 21st St. NW 202.994.6800 | Lisner.gwu.edu This theatre, housed on the campus of The George Washington University, brims with “unique programming,” says Chase. A rainbow of guests visit Lisner each year, including musicians, authors, comedians, ballets and more.

Lincoln theatre 1215 U St. NW 202.888.0050 | TheLincolnDC.com Once an incubator of African-American arts and culture just off D.C.’s “Black Broadway (U Street), the stunning Lincoln Theatre is being revitalized and again welcomes world-class performers and musicians.

9:30 Club 815 V St. NW 202.265.0930 | 930.com Hip music lovers flock to this cool-kid venue, which features hot musical acts and cool drinks. It’s often packed, so be sure you’re comfortable with crowds before buying your tickets to the next Lady Gaga vs. Madonna vs. Kylie dance party.

the Hamilton 600 14th St. NW 202.787.1000 | TheHamiltonDC.com Class-act entertainment, fine dining, a classy atmosphere – The Hamilton boasts all three. Be sure to catch a tune or two at this hot spot, located just two blocks from the White House in the heart of Washington.

6th and I Synagogue 600 T St. NW 202.408.3100 | SixthAndi.org Want a more intimate venue (other than the bathhouse)? Then the historic 6th and I Synagogue is calling your name. The Synagogue hosts a variety of events – music, lectures, tours, and even beer tastings.

Howard theatre 620 I St. NW 202.803-2899 | TheHowardTheatre.com For those in town for just a few days, the Howard Theatre is the perfect place to stumble upon a cool show, says Chase. Hungry for more? Then be sure to check out their Sunday Southern Gospel Brunch.
