Oct. 27, 2014 USC FOOTBALL STAYS ON THE ROAD TO PLAY AT WASHINGTON STATE FACTS USC (5-3 overall, 4-2 Pac-12 South) vs. Washington State (2-6 overall, 1-4 Pac-12 North), Saturday, Nov. 1, 1:30 p.m. PT, Martin Stadium, Pullman, Wash. THEMES USC, looking to bounce back from its second last-second defeat of 2014, remains on the road this week when it travels to pass-happy Washington State to begin the final month of the regular season. The Trojans have lost only 3 times ever in Pullman, but they haven’t played there since 2010 (it will be Troy’s first visit to the recently-renovated Martin Stadium). USC also has won nearly 85% of the time in the all-time series against the Cougars. Rain is in the long-range forecast. USC has a bye following the Washington State game. This is the first season in Trojan history that USC has dropped a pair of games when foes scored a game-winning touchdown within the final 8 seconds. Troy’s 3 losses in 2014 have been by a total of 13 points. USC sports a balanced offense, led by QB Cody Kessler, whose 70.2% completion mark is above the school season record. He is ninth in the country in passing efficiency (20 TDs to just 2 picks) and already in the USC Top 10 in career completions, passing yards and total offense. TB Javorius Allen, USC’s latest 1,000-yard season rusher, leads the Pac-12 in rushing and all-purpose yardage (no player in the nation has at least 1,000 rushing yards and 300 receiving yards like he does). His current string of 5 straight 100- yard outings is a first at USC since 2005. WR Nelson Agholor, who doubles as a dangerous punt returner (3 career TDs), caught a personal-best 10 passes last week at Utah and now is 15 th nationally in receptions. Speaking of dangerous returners, CB Adoree’ Jackson is the nation’s No. 5 kick returner after his 100-yard runback at Utah. The 3-way player (he has played some wideout on offense) is among 11 true freshmen who have played key roles for head coach Steve Sarkisian this season, including 8 who have posted 31 starts. USC’s depth keeps dwindling as injuries take their toll on a roster with NCAA-mandated scholarship limitations (in fact, no more than 57 recruited scholarship players have suited up for any game in 2014 and only 48 were on hand at Utah). Some of USC’s best players are on defense, including All-American DE Leonard Williams, ILB Hayes Pullard (Troy’s tackle leader for a third season who has made 341 career stops) and always-around-the-ball 2013 Freshman All-American S-turned-OLB Su’a Cravens. USC is in the national Top 25 in red zone defense, turnover margin and third down conversion defense; no Trojan foe has scored on its opening possession this season. WSU head coach Mike Leach’s squad is coming off its third straight loss, this time at home to Arizona last Saturday. Leach loves to fill the air with footballs, so it is no surprise that his Cougars top the nation in passing offense (nearly 500 yards a game) and are seventh in total offense. But the Cougs’ running game averages just 45.9 yards, next to last in the country. WSU’s offensive star is QB Connor Halliday, who threw for an NCAA record 734 yards against California this year. He leads the nation in total offense, completions, passing TDs, passing yards and points responsible for. He also is WSU’s career record holder for passing yards, TD passes, completions and attempts. WSU wideouts River Cracraft, Vince Mayle and Isiah Myers already each have 50-plus catches and all rank in the national Top 25 in receptions and receiving yardage. CB Daquawn Brown and junior LB Darryl Monroe are Washington State’s top tacklers. The game will air live on Pac- 12 Networks. The Women of Troy soccer team plays at Washington State the day after the USC-WSU football game. RANKINGS Neither USC nor Washington State is ranked in the AP poll or the USA Today Amway Coaches poll.

SERIESUSC leads its series with Washington State, which dates back to 1921, 57-9-4 (notincluding 1 win vacated due to NCAApenalty; original record: 58-9-4). The Trojanshave won 34 of the last 39 meetings (and40 of the past 46), but had a 7-gamewinning streak snapped with a loss in 2013(not including 1 win vacated due to NCAApenalty; original record: 35 of 40, 41 of 47,8-game winning streak). Playing against theCougars in the state of Washington(Pullman, Spokane and Seattle), USC is 18-3-2, with the losses (1930, 1986 and 2002)and ties (1937 and 1950) coming in Pullman. In Pullman games, USC is 14-3-2, with winsin 10 of its last 11 trips there.

Last year in the Coliseum, PK AndrewFurney’s 41-yard field goal with 3:03 to playgave Washington State a 10-7 Pac-12opening upset win over No. 25 USC in Troy’shome opener. It was WSU’s first win overthe Trojans since 2002 (and first in Los Angelessince 2000) and was just its fourth victory inthe Coliseum over USC since 1935. It wasWSU’s first win over a ranked opponentsince 2006 and first versus a ranked foe onthe road since 2000.It was USC’s fewestpoints against the Cougars since also scoring7 in 1941. The 10 points USC allowed wereits fewest surrendered in a loss since falling10-6 to Utah in 2001. The Trojans playedstaunch defense, as WSU had just 222 totalyards, including 7 rushing, and only 12 firstdowns (the fewest total yards against USCsince San Jose State’s 121 in 2009, fewestrushing yards since Arizona’s -16 in 2006 andfewest first downs since California’s 10 in2010). USC’s defense also came up with 3turnovers (2 interceptions and a fumblerecovery) and posted 4 sacks. But theTrojan offense could never get untracked, gaining just 193 total yards, including 54passing, getting only 14 first downs andconverting just 3-of-13 first downs (includingmissing on its first 7 such tries). It was Troy’sfewest total yards and passing yards sincegetting 189 and 23, respectively, at FloridaState in 1998. It also was the fewest totalyards allowed by WSU since 2004. USC goton the board first on QB Cody Kessler’s 4-yard bootleg run early in the secondquarter following OLB Devon Kennard’srecovery of a WSU fumble forced by DTGeorge Uko. The Trojans then were drivinglate in the half when Damante Horntonintercepted a Kessler pass and returned it70 yards for a tying TD. In the third quarter,PK Andre Heidari had a 32-yard field goalattempt blocked and then missed a 43-yarder on USC’s next series. Then, late inthe game, the Cougs drove from their own20-yard line into field goal range, aided bya 50-yard completion on third-and-9 fromQB Connor Hall iday to WR DominiqueWilliams to set up Furney’s decisive fieldgoal. Hornton sealed the win on USC’sensuing possession by intercepting QB MaxWittek. Kessler was 8-of-13 for 41 yards, whileWittek was 3-of-8 for 13 yards; the longestcompletion between them was 8 yards. TBTre Madden rushed for 151 yards on 32 carriesto become the first Trojan to open a seasonwith back-to-back 100-yard rushing outingssince Marcus Allen did so in his 1981 HeismanTrophy campaign. His 32 carries were themost by a Trojan since Sultan McCulloughhad 39 against California in 2001. WRMarqise Lee caught 7 passes, but for only27 yards. S Dion Bailey led USC with 10tackles and notched his secondinterception of the second (eighth of hiscareer), while OLB Morgan Breslin had 2

sacks. For WSU, Halliday was 26-of-38 for215 yards and WR Kristoff Williams had 6receptions for 56 yards. It was the first timethe teams had played since 2010 becauseof the Pac-12’s scheduling rotation. Itmarked the 90th anniversary of USC’s firstseason playing football in the Coliseum andwas the first Trojan game there since anagreement allowed USC to operate andrenovate the historic stadium. It was thefirst time that USC appeared on FOX Sports 1.

In 2010 in the teams’ lasting meeting inPullman, FB Stanley Havili gained 187 yardsand scored 2 touchdowns to lead No. 20USC to a decisive 50-16 Pac-10 openingwin at Washington State. It was USC’seighth consecutive win over the Cougars.Lane Kiffin became the first USC headcoach since Jess Hill in 1951 to begin hisTrojan career with a 4-0 mark. After WSUopened the scoring on a trick 29-yardreverse pass from WR Jeffrey Solomon to WRJared Karstetter, USC responded with a pairof touchdowns in an 11-second span:Havili raced 59 yards for a score on USC’sfirst play and then CB Nickell Robey returnedan interception 25 yards for a TD at the 11:07mark. It was USC’s 2 earliest touchdownsscored in a game since scoring twiceagainst WSU in 2004, when Troy did so in bythe 12:22 mark. The Trojans scored againon their next possession, a 11-yard pass fromQB Matt Barkley to WR Robert Woods (2plays following a 58-yard Barkley pass toHavili). The Cougars got back on the boardin the second quarter after getting aninterception as QB Jeff Tuel hit Karstetterwith a 6-yard TD pass. Late in the half, following Robey’s second interception (tobecome the first Trojan freshman to get 2picks in a game since Mike Salmon did so in1990 against Arizona State), Tyler scored ona 2-yard run to give USC a 28-13 halftimelead. The Trojans rolled up 312 yards of totaloffense in the first half despite turning theball over 3 times and holding it only 1:33 inthe opening quarter. Both teams ranprimarily a no huddle offense in the first half.It was all USC in the second half, as theTrojans scored on their first 3 possessions: 7-yard Barkley passes to WRs Brice Butler (toculminate a 93-yard drive) and RonaldJohnson (to finish a 98-yard drive) and a22-yard pass from QB Mitch Mustain to Haviliearly in the fourth quarter. WashingtonState added a 44-yard field goal by PK NicoGrasu midway through the final quarteragainst USC’s reserves. Overall, USC had613 total yards (including 328 through theair) while averaging 8.9 yards per play, made 28 first downs while converting 8-of-12 third downs (and 2-of-3 fourth downs)and did not have to punt. The Trojandefense limited WSU to 323 total yards (just67 rushing) and 6-of-15 on third downconversions while posting 3 sacks andgetting 3 turnovers. Havili ran for 80 yardson 4 carries and caught 5 passes for 107yards. TB Allen Bradford had a game-best84 yards on 7 rushes and TB Dillon Baxteradded 75 yards on 14 tries. Johnson caught5 passes for 69 yards. Barkley was 16-of-25for 290 yards and Mustain went 4-of-5 for 38yards. LB Devon Kennard had a game-best 8 tackles, while S T.J. McDonald added6 stops (1 for a loss) and an interception. For WSU, Tuel was 24-of-37 for 222 yards and3 interceptions, Karstetter caught 8 passesfor 87 yards and WR Marquess Wilson had 7receptions for 59 yards. It was the smallestcrowd (24,310) USC has played in front ofsince the 22,385 against Utah in the 2001Las Vegas Bowl.

FUN FACTThis is the second year in a row thatUSC will play on Nov. 1. Last season,USC won at Oregon State, 31-14, onFriday, Nov. 1. USC has an 11-3 all-timerecord in games on Nov. 1.

NCAA PROBATION OVERUSC’s NCAA probation officially ended thispast June 10, meaning the 2014 team is thelast under the 3-year NCAA penalty thatcaps the annual roster to a maximum of 75scholarship players and the yearlyscholarship signees to 15 (that’s 10 fewerthan the NCAA maximum in both cases).Despite being faced with severe NCAAsanctions the past 4 years, the Trojanfootball program was able to produce apair of 10-win seasons in that span. USC stillhas a year remaining in the 5-year windowof repeat violator status.

AVAILABLE SCHOLARSHIP PLAYERSBecause of the NCAA sanctions-mandatedscholarship limitation for this season, plusearly departures from last year’s team andsome in-season departures from this year’ssquad, the 2014 Trojans currently field aroster of only 65 recruited scholarship players.Just 58 of those are available this week (5are out for the season with injuries, 1 isacademically ineligible and 1 is indefinitelysuspended). Also, 6 more of the 58 availablerecruited scholarship players l ikely wil lredshirt in 2014. Only 57 recruitedscholarship players suited up for the FresnoState opener, then 52 for the Stanfordgame, 54 for Boston College, 57 for OregonState, 55 for Arizona State, 50 for Arizona, 53for Colorado and 48 for Utah.

LAST GAMEQV Travis Wilson threw a 1-yard touchdownpass to WR Kaelin Clay with 8 seconds toplay to give No. 19 Utah a 24-21 win overNo. 20 USC on a breezy evening before asold-out Rice-Eccles Stadium record crowdof 47,619 fans and a national FOX Sports 1audience. After USC failed to convert onthird-and-2 and then on fourth-and-2 with2:08 to play, the Utes drove 73 yards in 11plays, including Wilson’s 19-yard scrambleto the USC 1, then saw the Trojans stuff RBDevontae Booker for no gain before Wilsonthrew the game-winner. The contestbegan on an unusual note when WRDarreus Rogers couldn’t haul in QB CodyKessler’s backwards pass on the secondplay of the game and, while players fromboth teams stopped because they thoughtit was an incomplete pass, CB DavionOrphey scooped up the live ball (it wasruled a fumble) and raced 53 yards for ascore. But USC responded on its next drive,as Kessler hit WR JuJu Smith with a 10-yardscoring pass. Utah added a 24-yard fieldgoal by PK Andy Phillips midway throughthe second quarter, but CB Adoree’Jackson ran back the ensuing kickoff aschool record-tying 100 yards to give USCa 14-10 lead. Utah regained the lead latein the third quarter on Booker’s 24-yard TDburst following an intercepted Trojan pass.USC then went up 21-17 early in the finalquarter on Kessler’s 4-yard TD pass to Rogers.Kessler completed 75% of his throws (23-of-32) for 264 yards, WR Nelson Agholor had acareer-best 10 catches for 110 yards, Smithadded 6 grabs for 77 yards and TB JavoriusAllen ran 101 yards on 27 carries. OLB ScottFelix had a game-best 9 tackles (1.5 for aloss) and a deflection, ILB Anthony Saraohad 8 stops and OLB Su’a Cravens had 7tackles with 2 sacks and a deflection. USC’sdefense got turnovers twice when the Utesgot to the Trojan 1, first when OLB J.R. Tavaiforced a fumble that S Leon McQuayrecovered in the first quarter on Utah’s firstdrive and then on a strip and recovery byJackson in the third quarter (Jackson ranthe ball back 100 yards for a TD but thescore was negated because of aninadvertent referee’s whistle). USC had 364total yards to Utah’s 331, but Troy’s streak

of consecutive games rushing for 200 yardswas snapped (it had 100 rushing yards). ForUtah, Wilson was 18-of-32 for 194 yards,Booker had 102 yards on 26 rushes and TEWestlee Tonga caught 6 passes for 71 yards.USC, which suited up just 48 recruitedscholarship players, lost OT Chad Wheelerin the first quarter and Tavai right beforehalftime to knee injuries.

STEVE SARKISIANSteve Sarkisian, the eighth youngest (40)head coach currently in NCAA FBS, didn’thave to be shown around the USC campusor be instructed on Trojan gridiron lore whenhe was hired as the school’s head footballcoach this past December. He already wasquite familiar with all things Troy, from itsphysical layout to its academic prestige toits football tradition and culture. That’sbecause this is Sarkisian’s fifth time comingto USC, first as a student-athlete in the early1990s, then as a graduate assistant coachnearly a decade later, next as an assistantcoach (he was the quarterbacks coachon USC’s 2003 national championshipsquad), then as the offensive coordinatorfollowing a foray into the NFL and now asthe head coach after spending the past 5years guiding Washington (where he wentto 4 bowl games and beat 8 AP Top 25teams). At Washington, Sarkisian inheriteda program in 2009 that had won just 12games during the previous 5 seasons, including going winless the year before hetook over. His 8 victories in 2013 were themost at UW since 2000. He won 4 of his 5Apple Cup games against in-state rivalWashington State. He coached 9 NFLdraftees and produced a 1,000-yard rushereach year. His overall Washington recordwas 34-29. UW’s school record-setting 2013Washington offense was in the national Top20 in total offense, rushing offense, passefficiency offense and scoring offense, whilethe defense was in the Pac-12’s Top 6 inevery category. The 2013 Husky squadfeatured Doak Walker Award finalisttailback Bishop Sankey (No. 4 nationally inrushing), quarterback Keith Price (UW’srecordholder in career TD passes, passingefficiency and completion percentage),2013 Mackey Award-winning tight endAustin Seferian-Jenkins and safety SeanParker (11 career interceptions). At USC,Sarkisian coached Heisman Trophy-winningquarterbacks Carson Palmer and MattLeinart, along with NFL signalcallers MarkSanchez, John David Booty and MattCassel. The Trojans went 23-3 when he wasthe offensive coordinator. Sarkisianoriginally joined the USC staff as an offensiveassistant in January of 2001. Then, aftergoing to San Diego State briefly as thequarterbacks coach in January of 2002, hereturned to USC in March of 2002 to handlethe quarterbacks fulltime for 2 seasons(2002-03). He spent the 2004 season as thequarterbacks coach with the OaklandRaiders. His quarterbacks passed for morethan 4,000 yards in 2004 as Oakland rankedeighth in passing in the NFL. He returned tothe Trojan staff in February of 2005 as theassistant head coach and quarterbackscoach for 4 seasons (2005-08). He addedthe offensive coordinator role in 2007 and2008. While Sarkisian was at USC, the Trojansplayed in 5 Rose Bowls (including the 2006BCS Championship Game)—as well as the2003 Orange Bowl and 2001 Las Vegas Bowl.Sarkisian spent the 2000 season as thequarterbacks coach at El Camino JuniorCollege in Torrance (Calif.).

ASSISTANT COACHESJust 2 full-time assistant coaches from USC’s2013 staff were retained by Sarkisian: Helton, the offensive coordinator who handles thequarterbacks, and wide receivers coach/pass game coordinator Tee Martin, whowas named the Pac-12’s Recruiter of theYear in 2014. Sarkisian brought 5 assistantswith him from Washington: defensivecoordinator Justin Wilcox, running backscoach/special teams coordinator/assistanthead coach Johnny Nansen, linebackerscoach/recruiting coordinator/associatehead coach defense Peter Sirmon, tightends coach/associate head coach offenseMarques Tuiasosopo and defensive backscoach/pass game coordinator defenseKeith Heyward. Strength and conditioninghead coach Ivan Lewis also followed himto USC. Sarkisian then hired Tim Drevno fromthe San Francisco 49ers to be the offensiveline coach/running game coordinator andChris Wilson from Georgia to be thedefensive line coach. Graduate assistantcoach Jaron Fairman (offense) was heldover from last year’s staff, while another 3—Kyle DeVan (offense), who played atOregon State and in the NFL, PatrickHenderson (defense), another Beavergraduate who most recently was a juniorcollege defensive coordinator, and DrewPearson (defense), who previouslycoached at a local high school—joined thestaff this season.

OFFENSIVE OVERVIEWEight starters return on offense from 2013:quarterback Cody Kessler, tailback JavoriusAllen, wide receiver Nelson Agholor, fullback Soma Vainuku, tight end RandallTelfer and offensive linemen Max Tuerk,Chad Wheeler and Aundrey Walker. Othersback with starting experience are tailbackTre Madden, wide receiver Darreus Rogers, fullback Jahleel Pinner, offensive tackleNathan Guertler and tight end Chris Willson.USC’s leading passer, top 2 rushers (and 5of its top 6 ground gainers) and 4 of its top 6pass catchers (and 13 players in all whohad a reception) are back from 2013. TheTrojans averaged nearly 30 points and 400total yards last year while breaking in a newsignalcaller, figures that were down justslightly from the previous year when theoffense was quarterbacked by a 4-yearstarter and featured a record-settingwideout and a career 1,000-yard runner.USC was particularly effective last fall in thered zone (sixth nationally) and in time ofpossession (10th nationally), both best in thePac-12, and it cut its turnovers in half from2012 (from 34 to just 17). However, Troy willlook for improvement across the board onoffense, as its key 2013 offensive stats (scoringoffense at 29.7, total offense at 399.9, rushingoffense at 172.8 and passing offense at227.1) all ranked in the middle third of thenation’s teams, while it particularly struggledon third down conversions (35.1%) andsacks allowed (2.43), both of which were inthe bottom third. Sarkisian, who will callthe plays with help from offensivecoordinator Clay Helton, will employ multipleformations on offense. But noticeablydifferent from past USC offensive schemeswill be Sarkisian’s use of the hurry-up no-huddle system.

QUARTERBACKSUSC is in good hands at the quarterbackspot. Junior Cody Kessler (186-of-265, 70.2%,2,148 yds, 20 TD, 2 int in 2014, plus 2 rush TDand 33.8 avg on 4 P), who was named the2014 starter near the end of spring practice, showed continual improvementthroughout 2013 in his first year as the starter, completing 65.4% of his passes for 2,968 yardsand 20 TDs with just 7 interceptions. In thefinal 6 games of last season, he hit 70.8% ofhis aerials with 11 TDs and just 2 picks. Hewas the Las Vegas Bowl MVP, going 22-of-30 (73.3%) for a career-high 345 yards anda career-best and Vegas Bowl record 4touchdown passes. His 70.2% completionpercentage in 2014 currently is above theUSC season record (69.1% by Matt Barkleyin 2011). None of his first 190 passes in 2014were intercepted (he had a streak of 195extending to 2013) and only 2 of his 265throws in 2014 have been picked off. Hehas thrown just 3 interceptions in his past 13games. He has thrown for at least 300 yardsin a game 4 times in his career (3 in 2014).He already is seventh on Troy’s careerpassing chart (424 completions), ninth onthe career passing yardage list (4,861) andninth on the career total offense chart (4,962yards). His 7 TD passes versus Colorado in2014 was a USC game record, as well astied a Pac-12 regulation game record.Despite that Vegas Bowl showing, Kesslerwas challenged in the spring by promisingredshirt freshman Max Browne (3-of-7, 42.9%,30 yds in 2014), who was the nation’s highschool player of the year in 2012 when heset Washington State records for passingyards (12,953) and completions (882) whilecompleting 70.4% of his throws for 146 TDs. A2013 spring enrollee, Browne already has thebenefit of spring and fall practices underhis belt. He graduated high school a semesterearly so he could enroll at USC this pastspring. Six untested walk-on quarterbacksalso are on the roster: senior Anthony Neyer, sophomores Conner Sullivan (a former Trojanbaseballer), who also holds on placekicks, and Alex Bridgford, a transfer this past springfrom Redlands, and first-year freshmen LarryTuileta, who will also play volleyball at USC(he was the national prep player of the yearin the sport as a senior), Michael Bowmanand Andrew Zolintakis.

WHAT THEY ARE SAYING ABOUT CODY KESSLER

Steve Sarkisian, USC head coach: ”He can make andsee things extremely well and make decisivedecisions quickly. I think that comes from hisbasketball experience, playing point guard, havinghim make those types of decisions. For us, that’svitally important. He has really quick hands and throwsaccurately.”

TAILBACKSUSC remains well-stocked at tailbackdespite the departure of Silas Redd, whohad 2,959 rushing yards in his time at USCand Penn State, including 12 career 100-yard rushing games (5 at Troy, with a pair in2013 while appearing in just 6 contestsbecause of injuries). He ran for 376 yards atUSC last year. Two players with startingexperience, plus a key backup, dot the2014 tailback corps. Junior Javorius Allen(177 tcb, 1,010 yds, 5.7 avg, 8 TD in 2014,plus 27 rec, 316 yds, 11.7 avg, 1 TD), USC’s2013 team MVP who goes by the nickname“Buck,” led the Trojans in rushing last seasonwith 785 yards and 14 TDs. WHAT THEY ARE SAYING ABOUT NELSON AGHOLOR

Kyle Bonagura, ESPN.com: ”On a team that featured2012 Biletnikoff winner Marqise Lee, Agholor wassimply the better receiver in 2013 and his value tothe Trojans stretched further than that because ofhow he could impact games as a return man…Agholor has developed a reputation for being anNFL-caliber route runner and is among the nation’smost dangerous receivers after the catch.”

Paul Myerberg, USA Today Sports: ”Agholor willbecome the focal point of USC’s passing game, working in concert with a second-year startingquarterback and putting up some of the strongesttotals of any pass-catcher in college football…He’llbe an All-American in some capacity – either as areceiver or return man.”

Michael Lev, Orange County Register: ”Agholor isone of the Trojans’ best players and one of theirhardest workers. That’s always a desirablecombination. It’s also one of the ways in whichAgholor is similar to his go-to-guy predecessors atUSC, Robert Woods and Marqise Lee.”

Gabriel Baumgaertner, Sports Illustrated: ”Agholoris a shifty, savvy receiver who has the ability toneedle through cramped openings. When he hitsthe open field, he practically vanishes.”

Steve Addazio, Boston College head coach: ”NelsonAgholor is exceptional. He’s a game-breaker.”

Bucky Brooks, NFL.com media analyst: ”The Trojanshave churned out a number of NFL receivers overthe past decade, but Agholor has a chance to beone of the best to come out of USC since KeyshawnJohnson. He is a natural route runner with outstandingball skills and hands. Additionally, Agholor is a sneakyrunner with a knack for turning short passes into biggains due to his underrated kick-return skills.”

WHAT THEY ARE SAYING ABOUT JUJU SMITH

Jake Davidson, Daily Trojan: ”JuJu Smith is a physicalphenom with the potential to go down as the bestTrojan receiver ever. His rare mix of speed and powercombined with a penchant for elusive moves is trulyremarkable.”

Also gone is reliable guardJohn Martinez, who had 30 career starts(most coming prior to 2013). Some qualitylinemen are returning from last season: juniorMax Tuerk, a 2-year starter who is versatileenough to play any line position (he startedat left guard most of 2013 after starting atleft tackle some of 2012) and enters 2014 asthe starting center, senior 2-year starterAundrey Walker, who started at right guardin 2013 until he broke his ankle late in theseason (he was the starting left tackle mostof 2012), and sophomore Chad Wheeler, theleft tackle starter last fall. Wheeler is nowsidelined for the 2014 season after hurtinghis knee at Utah. Walker missed 2014 springpractice while recovering. There are somemostly-untested linemen looking to breakinto the lineup or serve as key backups:seniors Nathan Guertler at tackle, a one-time walk-on who earned a scholarship inthe spring of 2014 after playing in 12 gameson the line and on special teams in 2013(he even started once), and centerGiovanni Di Poalo, sophomores Zach Banner(1 tac in 2014) at tackle (he was sidelinedmost of last year because of hip surgery)and guard Jordan Simmons (a mid-seasonknee injury knocked him out for the rest ofthe 2013 schedule and he sat out 2014 springdrills while recovering) and redshirt freshmenKhaliel Rodgers at guard and Nico Falahat tackle. Then there is returning walk-onjunior guard Erick Jepsen. Two freshmenlinemen graduated high school a semesterearly and enrolled at USC this past spring:prep All-American Toa Lobendahn, alongwith tackle Jordan Austin. USC allowedjust 37 first-quarter points all season and itdid not allow any second-half points in 3games. The Trojans did this despite using 3or fewer defensive substitutes in 6 games in2013 because of the effects of the NCAAscholarship limitations. Sarkisian and newdefensive coordinator Justin Wilcox, whosemultiple fronts will have the look at times oflast season’s Trojan defense, are hoping2013’s stingy defensive performancescontinue this season. This defense will runout of a 3-4 base with 4-3 principles applied.

WHAT THEY ARE SAYING ABOUT LEONARD WILLIAMS

David Shaw, Stanford head coach: ”You ask [thescouts] the question ‘Who is the best offensive playeryou’ve seen? Who is the best defensive playeryou’ve seen? …All of them said Leonard Williams atUSC [on defense]. It’s not just me, everybody seesit.”

Rich Rodriguez, Arizona head coach: ”He’s so athleticthat you can have guys assigned to him andsometimes two guys assigned to him. He is strongenough where he doesn’t have to use his athleticismbecause he can bull rush you. He has all thecharacteristics you want in a defensive lineman.”

Ted Miller, ESPN.com: ”Williams has great length andathleticism and surprising power. He is thecenterpiece of what might be the Pac-122 s bestdefense.”

Gary Klein, Los Angeles Times: ”USC’s junior defensivelineman is regarded as a first-round pick in the 2015NFL draft.”

Ryan Abraham, USCFootball.com: ”He is arguablythe best player on the team, best player in theconference and with a big year could be touted asthe best player in the country.”

Brent Sobleski, CollegeFootballTalk.com: ”Williams isthe most talented player on USC’s roster. He’sprojected as a possible No. 1 overall pick in the2015 NFL draft. It’s not out of the realm of possibilityto think Williams will put together a season likeNdamukong Suh did in 2009 and establish himself asthe most dominant defender in college football.”

Paul Myerberg, USA Today Sports: ”Leonard Williams(is) the most impressive total-package lineman incollege football and, just perhaps, the nation’s mostimpressive defender, period. He’s everything you’dneed: Williams is 290 pounds but moves like he’s 40pounds lighter, balancing immense strength andleverage with a brutally quick and near-unstoppablefirst step.”

Steve Sarkisian, USC head coach: ”He’s a toughmatchup. And he plays the game very hard. Heplays with amazing effort. He enjoys being out here.As big as he is, that guy’s got a bundle ofenergy. Fortunately as hard as it is that we have toface Leonard every day during practice, we don’thave to face him every Saturday during theseason…For all the talent he has, he works as hardor harder than anybody on our practice field.Leonard really sets the tone for us up front. It’s agreat thing when arguably your best player playswith the most effort. It sends a real message to therest of your defense…He’s working to play beyondwhat his talent says he should play.”

Michael Lev, Orange County Register: ”Williams isboth. He is USC’s best player and its mostirreplaceable. He’s just that good. A projected top-five pick in next year’s NFL draft should he chooseto enter it, the 6-foot-5, 300-pound Williams is both astout run defender and ferocious pass rusher.”

Mel Kiper Jr., ESPN draft analyst: ”At his size, he’s aspecial athlete who could line up as a defensiveend and drive a tackle back or line up on the outsideshoulder of a guard and create problems with powerand quickness as well. He’s the kind of disruptive, versatile lineman who can succeed in any system.”

From the start of trainingcamp, the motto for the 2004 USC football teamwas “Leave No Doubt.” The Trojans did just that, winning their second consecutive nationalchampionship. And, unlike 2003, this title wasundisputed, as USC demolished Oklahoma in theBCS Championship Game in the Orange Bowl, 55-19. Troy went 11-0 overall (not including 2 winsvacated due to NCAA penalty; original record:13-0, a school record for victories) and becamejust the second team ever to hold the AP No. 1ranking from pre-season through the entirecampaign. It was only the 10th time that a teamwon back-to-back AP crowns. At 7-0, USC wonits third consecutive Pac-10 title (not including 1win vacated due to NCAA penalty; originalrecord: 8-0). The Trojans swept traditional rivalsUCLA and Notre Dame for an unprecedented thirdyear in a row (UCLA win vacated due to NCAApenalty). USC concluded the season riding a 20-game winning streak, as well as 21 straight homegames, a Pac-10 record 15 consecutive leaguehome games, 14 straight Pac-10 games and 8 roadgames in a row (not including 2 overall wins, 1 Pac-10 win and 1 road win vacated due to NCAApenalty: original record: 22-game winning streak,15 Pac-10 games, 9 road games). Troy was in thenational Top 10 in every defensive statisticalcategory (its total defense average was USC’slowest in 15 years), including first in rushing defenseand turnover margin and third in scoring defense.USC outscored opponents by 25.2 points (includinga school-record 8 games with a margin of at least30 points). USC played before 3 home sellouts, 7regular-season sellouts and 8 season sellouts, allschool marks. And Troy set a USC and Pac-10record for home attendance average, as well asschool records for total home attendance, overallattendance average and total overallattendance. A school-record 6 Trojans (HeismanTrophy quarterback Matt Leinart, Heisman finalisttailback Reggie Bush, defensive linemen ShaunCody and Mike Patterson, and linebackers MattGrootegoed and Lofa Tatupu) were named All-American first teamers. Leinart and Bush werenamed the Pac-10 Co-Offensive Players of theYear, while Cody was the Pac-10 Co-DefensivePlayer of the Year.

—The 10th anniversary of Matt Leinart’s 2004Heisman Trophy season.
