Our association raises funds through dues and events, supporting student scholarships, programming, campus development and student life. We are excited to celebrate your success today as you graduate from the University of Alaska Southeast!

Caps and GownsThe academic caps and gowns worn today have roots dating to medieval days. The basic design has changed little since its first appearance at Oxford and Cambridge Universities in the 13th century. Color is an important element of all academic ceremonies. The variety of colors associated with academic costume symbolize degrees earned and areas of study:

Arts, Letters, Humanities ....................... WhiteBusiness Administration ......................... Sapphire BlueCommerce, Accountancy, Business ......... DrabEconomics ............................................. CopperEducation .............................................. Light BlueFine Arts ................................................ BrownLaw ........................................................ PurpleLibrary Science ....................................... Lemon YellowMusic ..................................................... PinkNursing .................................................. Apricot Oratory (Speech) .................................... Silver GrayPhilosophy ............................................. Dark BluePublic Administration ............................ Peacock BluePublic Health ......................................... Salmon PinkScience Golden ...................................... YellowSocial Science ......................................... CreamSocial Work ............................................ Citron

Cap: The Oxford cap is black with a long tassel fastened to the middle of the top, usually worn over the left front of the cap. At many institutions colored tassels indicate the candidate’s school or college. At UAS, the black tassel is worn on the cap for master’s degrees. Gold tassels are worn by the stage party and those with doctor’s degrees. Graduates wear blue and silver tassels representing the school’s colors.Gown: Three types of black gowns may be distinguished in the processional. Baccalaureate gowns have long, pointed sleeves or straight bottom sleeves. Master’s gowns have oblong sleeves with an arc cut away in front. The Doctoral gowns, worn by faculty and the stage party, are faced with velvet and have bell-shaped sleeves.Hood: Candidates for master’s degrees wear hoods with velvet trim which indicate the degree the candidate has earned. Doctoral hoods have side panels that create a three-dimensional effect and give the hood more heft. The lining of the hood reflects the colors of the university.Academic Mace: The tradition of the academic mace began in the late 14th century when two ancient instruments, the royal scepter and the battle mace, were combined to form a symbol of the authority. Together with the chain of office, the academic mace indicates the authority vested in the institution to grant degrees. The mace is carried by the Faculty Senate President. When placed in state on the stage, commencement is in session.

Degree Recipients 2014The University of Alaska Southeast is pleased to honor graduates from summer 2013, fall 2013, and spring 2014 in this year’s ceremony. UAS students pursue their studies from many different locations across Alaska. We offer congratulations to those graduates who could not be here today.

Honorssumma cum laude - 4.0 G.P.A.magna cum laude - 3.8 G.P.A.cum laude - 3.5 G.P.A.

All college work attempted, including that attempted at other institutions, is considered in the calculation of honors. Honors at commencement are based on grades through the fall semester, and calculations may be revised after spring grades have been posted. Honors are not awarded to certificate and graduate degree students.

UAS Strives for SustainabilityWe are proud to announce that UAS has received a BRONZE sustainability rating from the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE). The Sustainability Tracking, Assessment and Rating System or STARS process began during Spring Semester 2013. Students lead the year-long effort, interviewing dozens of staff, faculty and students to assess our achievements in three general categories: education and research; operations; and planning, administration and engagement. The process helped us to identify strengths and to determine areas for future improvement toward creating a more socially and environmentally sustainable university.

Doctor of PhilosophyFisheriesEllen Martinson Yasumiishi M.S. Fishery Resources, University of Idaho, 2004B.S. Biology, University of Alaska Southeast, 1996Thesis Title: Growth of chum salmon in relation to population abundance and climate in the eastern North Pacific Ocean and the recruitment of Pollock in the eastern Bering SeaAbstract: Size at maturity of chum salmon was linked to growth during the immature stages of offshore waters of the North Pacific Ocean. Growth varied with both climate variability and fish production. Growth of chum salmon captured in the Pollock fishery and summer sea temperature were indicators for age-1 Pollock recruitment.

Doctor of PhilosophyFisheriesJonathan I. Richar B.S. Fisheries, University of Alaska Fairbanks, 2008Thesis Title: Recruitment mechanisms of Tanner crab in the eastern Bering SeaAbstract: Potential recruitment mechanisms for eastern Bering Sea Tanner crab were investigated through multiple approaches, including a 3-D hydrodynamic model, in an attempt to explain recruitment variability. Findings suggest that larval retention is important to local recruitment, while predation by groundfish, near bottom temperature and female spawner abundance may influence survival.Major Professor: Dr. Gordon Kruse

Emily Rose King2014 Commencement Student Speaker

}Bachelor of Arts, English, Minor, Spanish

Emily King is an English major with a creative writing emphasis.

She excelled in her course work and her many endeavors. In her creative writing workshops, she demonstrated an excellent ability to stand up in front of a group and talk, teach, and lead discussion.

She is a creative and innovative thinker. In the fall semester of her senior year she designed an extremely rigorous internship called “healing through poetry” in which she went into multiple communities in

Juneau to teach poetry, including the prison, the AWARE shelter, and the alternative high school. She faced many challenges in teaching those groups and was successful in each one.

Emily recently learned that she will be teaching at a bilingual elementary school in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas. This placement is through a program called Teach for America that places committed individuals in schools in low-income communities to help them achieve.

She is confident, poised, and extremely reliable. In four years of classes with me, I do not believe Emily ever missed a class. She is also a powerful and beautiful writer with a gift for spoken word poetry. — Emily Wall, Assistant Professor of English

Dave Hunsaker2014 Commencement Speaker

}Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters Recipient

Dave Hunsaker fills a unique role in the State of Alaska, using his

creative expertise to link Native story and tradition to Western literature. His insights and perspectives have brought respect to Alaska’s indigenous people throughout Alaska, nationally and internationally.

Hunsaker’s first script, “Yup’ik Antigone” was developed in Toksook Bay. The play’s international success led to a career as a playwright and screenwriter. Hunsaker developed and was artistic director for the Juneau-based touring Naa Kahidi Theater for ten years. He’s worked with Perseverance Theatre, Theatre in the Rough and legendary filmmakers such as Norman Jewison, Julie Taymor, Carroll Ballard, Mel Gibson, and Leonardo DiCaprio.

Hunsaker facilitates understanding among Western audiences of Alaska Native cultural traditions from around the state, spanning many regions and indigenous groups. His work has gone beyond Alaska’s borders to New York, Washington D.C. and Europe, indicating true leadership in the artistic world.

Hunsaker was adopted by the Luxaax.ádi Clan of the Tlingit Nation, is the recipient of a Governor’s Award for the Arts and a fellowship in the Arts from the State of New York.

His graphic novel, The North End of the World was published by Black Watch Comics in October, 2012. His novel The Circus of the Dark Moon will be published next year.

Mostly my work has always been about exploring the myths and oral literature of the world.

Eight stars of gold, on a field of blueAlaska’s flag, may it mean to you

the blue of the sea, the evening skythe mountain lakes, and the flowers near by

The gold of the early sourdough’s dreamsthe precious gold of the hills and streams

the brilliant stars in the northern skythe bear, the dipper, and shining high

the great north star with its steady lighto’er land and sea, a beacon bright
