Sunday of the Triumph of Orthodoxy is celebrated on the First Sunday of Great Lent – and itis the joyous Commemoration of the Victory of the Iconodules over the Iconoclasts bythe confirmed decision of the Seventh E cumenical Council.

The Hymns of Vespers, Matins and the Divine Liturgy pay tribute to the rightful restoration ofOrthodox Icons as being essential to the worship and Devotional Life of all FaithfulChristians.

To remind us of the great significance of the restoration of Holy Icons as an essential partof our Orthodox Worship of God and veneration of His Holy Saints and Heavenly Hosts, the Clergy and the Faithful process around the church holding a variety of Holy Icons.

The procession is halted every so often while certain hymns are chanted and the Priestpronounces the anathemas against the enemies of Divine Truth.

Each Sunday of Great Lent has its own special historical and Spiritual Theme and thisperiod was especially significant for Catechumens who were preparing for their HolyBaptism and thus, Entry into the Holy Church of Christ.

The theme of Sunday of the Triumph of Orthodoxy concerns the great Victory of the TrueFaith – the Divine Truth of Almighty God, which is “... the Victory that overcomes theworld...” (1 John 5 : 4)

Furthermore the Holy Icons of our Saviour and His Holy Saints bear witness to the Divine Truththat we are “... created in the Image and Likeness of God.” (Genesis 1:26)

We become Sanctified and restored to our original God-Likeness through our constantSpiritual Struggles, Fasting and Purification (Repentance-Confession and Holy Eucharist)as God’s living Image.

The connection of the great Victory over the heretical iconoclasm with Lent is purelyhistorical because the first “Triumph of Orthodoxy” occurred on this particular FirstSunday of Great Lent.

The First Sunday of Great Lent originally commemorated the Holy Prophets of God such asSt Moses, St Aaron and St Samuel. The Divine Liturgy “ Alleluia ” verses and Sacred Readings/Lessons that are appointed for this

day reflect this older purpose. The Epistle of St Paul is a completion of his Epistle to the Hebrews 11: 24-26 & 11: 32 – 12:

2. The Catechumens of the early Church heard the Epistle concerning the OldCovenant men who lived by their unwavering Faith in a Divine Promise, the eventualFulfilment of which they themselves did not live to witness.

After the Righteous Faithful of the Old Covenant are mentioned, St Paul wrote: “... and allthese, having obtained a Good Testimony through Faith, did not receive thePromise – God having provided Something better for us, that they should not bemade Perfect apart from us.”

The Sacred Gospel Lesson is from the Holy Gospel according to St John the Divine andBeloved Theologian (John 1 : 43 – 51), which ends with an explanation of the“Something better ” that is mentioned by St Paul.

Our Lord Jesus Christ told His Faithful Disciples and Apostles that they – and we, too -would “... see greater Things than these...” (meaning His Great Divine Miracles).

He continued: “... Truly, truly, I say to you: hereafter you shall see Heaven open, andthe Angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man... ”

The Catechumens of the early Church and the Faithful Disciples of Christ – past andpresent, who were and are preparing for Holy Pascha –will all eventually see theinauguration of the New Age, which is the Fulfilment of all Divine Promises, and theGlorious Manifestation of the Eternal Kingdom of God through the Incarnation of Christin His Holy Church.
