Ashasbeenthecaseoverthepastseveralyears,tenniscontinuedtoflourishinCanadain2014andsurpassedthehighexpectationssetin2013onnearlyeverylevel.thoughundernewleadershipandoperatingwithafreshperspective,themissionandvisionoftennisCanadaremainsthesame–leadthegrowthoftennisinCanadaandbecomeaworld-leadingtennisnation.theprogresstowardsthesegoalswastremendousoverthepastyearanditiswithsincerepleasureandimmenseexcitementthatwesharethatprogresswithyouthroughthepagesofthisreport.
thefuturelooksbright.the2014nationalresearchstudyonthehealthofthesportoftennisinCanadaproducedremarkableresults.thestudyshowedthat,inthepast12months,morethan6.5millionCanadiansplayedtennisatleastonce.thisisa32%increaseover2012whenthelastparticipationnumbersweretracked.Popularityofthesportisalsoontherisewith51%ofCanadianssayingtheyareeithersomewhatorveryinterestedintennis,upfrom38%in2012.ofthe6.5millionparticipants,5.3millionplayatleastfourtimesperyearwhilenearly1.7millionareconsideredfrequentplayerswhohitthecourtsatleasttwicepermonthduringthesummer.
Alsoshowingdouble-digitgrowthisparticipationandinterestamongstyouth.morethan600,000childrenbetweentheagesof6-11pickeduparacquetinthelastyear.morethanhalfofthosechildrenplayedatleastfourtimesinthat12-monthspan;thisisanincreaseofmorethan80%forthatagegroup.thestudyalsoshowsthatthemajorityofthenewfaninterestinthesportoveralliscomingfromayoungerdemographic.
thisgrowthcanbeattributedtosomanythings.theeffortfromprovincialandterritorialassociationsdownthroughtheclubsystemtoimplementnewprogrammingandkeeppeopleengagedinthesportisphenomenal.Wewouldnotbeabletoachieveourgoalswithouttheirsupport.ourfundraisingteamhasraisedmoniesthatgospecificallyintoensuringkidshavetheopportunitytotrythesportforthefirsttime.newfacilitieshaveopened,particularlyontheeastCoast,bolsteringparticipationnumbersforthatregion.thepoolofcoachesisgrowingwithinstructorcoursesacrossthecountry,makingsurepeoplearelearningfromcertifiedprofessionals.Andthelistgoeson.
However,itissuccessthatoftenbreedssuccess,andtheperformancesontheinternationalstagefromthelikesofeugenieBouchard,milosRaonic,vasekPospisil,DanielnestorandmoreserveasinspirationforallCanadianswhowanttofollowthem,cheerforthem,andbelikethem.thespecificsoftheirhistory-makingaccomplishmentsareoutlinedinmoredetailinthereport,buteachofthemachievedbothpersonalbestsandfirstsfortheircountrythispastyear,catapultingthemevenfurtherintostardomandintotheheartsoffansacrosstheglobe.Wecouldnotbemoreproudofthem.

WithtennisCanada’smissionbeingtoleadthegrowthoftennisacrossthecountry,thecommunity,grassrootsandrecreationalcompetitivelevelsofthesportremainoftheutmostimportanceinachievingourgoals.Continuedfocuswasputoncreating,implementingandimprovingprogramsinplacethataffecteveryonefromkidsundereightyearsofagewhoarejuststartingoutallthewaythroughtouniversityandcollegeprogramswhichencourageplayerstokeepplayingthesporttheylove.
thelittleAcesmajormarketstrategycontinuestothrivewitheightcommunitiesacrossthecountrygrowingthesportoftennisthroughgrassrootskidstennisprograms.Anincreasedemphasiswasputonstartingkidstennisleagues.theseleaguesprovidelowcost,affordableprogramsforkidswithafocusonplay.Akidstennisleaguesimplementationguideforinstructors,tennisprofessionalsandcommunityleaderswasdevelopedwiththepurposetoprovideleagueorganizersallthenecessaryinformationtorunasuccessfulprogram.kidstennisleaguesareanintegralpartofgrowingthegameaswellasensuringtheloveoftennisisinstilledatayoungage.littleAcesProgramsattractedmorethan1,200kidstennisleagueparticipants,touchedover9,000kidsinschoolsandhelpeddriveparticipantsintolocalclubs,parksandrecreationprograms.
Additionally,theBuildingtennisCommunities(BtC)programcontinuedtoflourishas10newcommunitiesjoinedin2014,includingCalgary,Clearwater,kentville,Casselman,Amherstburg,Cymbria,Parcextension,laval,l’ile-Perrotandnouvelle.

tennisCanadaalsopartneredwithcommunityprojectsandorganizationssuchasthesunshineProject,Jane/FinchCommunitytennisAssociationandtheDougPhilpottInnerCityChildren’sFund.theseorganizationshelpbreakdownthebiggestbarriersthatpreventmanychildrenfromenjoyingthesportoftennisincludingcourtavailability,costandequipment.
Askidsgrowandcontinuewiththesportthroughelementaryandhighschool,itisimperativethatapathwaybeinplaceforthemtoplaytennisthatisnotnecessarilypartofthehighperformancestream.UniversitytennisinCanadacontinuestogrowimmenselyandthisgrowthisevidentinthecompetitivenatureshownatoursixthannualnationalcollegeanduniversitychampionshipswhichtookplaceinmontrealinconjunctionwithRogersCuppresentedbynationalBank.theUniversityofAlbertawontheirfirsttitle,havingcompetedintheeventforsixconsecutiveyears.therearenow22Canadianuniversitiesthatcompeteannuallyforthenationaltitle.
Forthesecondconsecutiveyear,theU18U.s.CollegeshowcaseeventwasheldinconjunctionwiththeU18CanadiannationalJuniorChampion-shipstoshowcaseyoungCanadiantalentinfrontofU.s.collegecoaches.thiseventhasgrownsince2013withmorethan30coachesattendingtheshowcase.therearecurrently124CanadiansplayinginU.s.collegesin2014makingU.s.orCanadianuniversitytennisaviableoptionforallyoungCanadianplayers.

Withsomuchsuccesscurrentlybeingexperiencedatalllevelsofthesport,thereisacontinuedimportanceplacedonidentifyingandrecruitingnew,talentedathletestothepipeline.In2014,nationalBankbecametheofficialsponsorofthetalentrecruitmentanddevelopmentprogramnationally.overthenextthreeyears,theirsupportwillhelpgivethousandsofchildrenachancetodreamaboutbeingCanada’snextbigtennisstar.makingamovebacktoitsoriginaldesignconcept,theprogramcontinueditsexpansionintermsofthenumberofplayersrecruitednationwide.morethan1000childrenranginginagefrom5-8yearsoldwererecruitedtooutdoorsummerclubsinQuebecorskillsDayeventsinontario,BritishColumbia,AlbertaandnewBrunswick.Inall,14indoorfacilitiesinfivedifferentprovinceswereinvolvedaswellas26outdoorclubsinQuebec.thisnumberwillbeexpandedin2015toidentifyevenmorepotentialtalentacrossthecountry.

WiththedevelopmentprojectsthathavebeeninitiatedoverthelastseveralyearsbytennisCanada,theprovincialtennisandwheelchairassociationsandcommunityorganizationsareshowingpromisingresultsandanincreasingnumberofparticipants,leadingtothecontinuedgrowthofwheelchairtennisinCanadain2014.
newgrassrootsprogramswerelaunchedinontario,Alberta,newBrunswickandBritishColumbia,andcombinedwithalready-existingprograms,atotalof50newplayerswereexposedtointroductorywheelchairtennisthroughouttheyear.AnewpartnershipwasalsoforgedwiththeHollandBloor-viewkidsRehabilitationHospital,whichhasseenwheelchairtennisbecomearegularcomponentinthechildren’sphysicaleducation.

Inthepasttwoyears,threesuccessfulfacilitieshaveopenedtheirdoorswithassistancefromtennisCanada.oneinFredericton,oneinDartmouthandoneintruro,makingitthreebrandnewtennisfacilitiesontheeastCoast,aregionthatwasindireneedofindoortenniscourts.Anincreaseininterestinthesportcanalreadybetrackedinthemaritimesasourannualstudyshowsthatfanengagementwithtennishastripledinthepasttwoyears.Fourkeymarketshavebeenidentifiedasbeingaprioritymovingforward;Halifax,Winnipeg,Calgaryandvancouver.Progressisbeingmadeinallfourmarketswiththehelpoflocaladvocates,partnersandprovincialtennisassociations.
Calgaryremainsthefirstmarketontargetforanewfacility.AfterreachingalandagreementwiththeCityofCalgaryin2013,allremainingfundswereraisedfortheconstructionofaregionaltennisdevelopmentcentrewhichwillhouseeightindoorhardcourts.UndertheleadershipoftennisCanadaBoardmemberRonghitterandtennisAlbertapresidentglenscott,theprojectisscheduledtobreakgroundinthespringof2015.
Canada’stwopremiertennisfacilities,RexallCentreandUniprixstadium,continuetobethehubofprofessionaltennisandhighperformancedevel-opmentprogramsforthecountry.thisincludesthehostingofRogersCuppresentedbynationalBankintorontoandmontreal,thehousingofthefull-timenationaltrainingCentreinmontrealandseveraluniqueancillaryeventsthatbringinadditionalrevenue.AtUniprixstadiumin2014,theyplayedhosttothegrandsBallet,theRoboticFestivalandafundraiserforthemontrealHeartInstitute.AtRexallCentre,thepartnershipwithyorkUniversitycontinuestobestrongastheyholdtheirexamsandconvocationintheCentreofexcellence.
