Goals■Understand the 2014 Technology Standards■Identify hurdles to overcome and strategies

supporting effective adoption■Evaluate pedagogical models which support

implementation■ Identify free technology resources ■Develop an Adopt, Plan, Perform (APP)

WHY?

Students need to understand, filter, and manage the tools and information they use and the products they create.

Educators need to be prepared to facilitate technology use across all content areas.

■ Every 5 years New Jersey standards are reviewed■ Current research exposes methods to improve knowledge

acquisition■ Mobile access to information and resources 24/7, enables

students to create multimedia content and allows them to participate in online social networks where people from all over the world share ideas, collaborate, and learn new things. Source: National Educational Technology Plan 2010

■ Technology has made it easy to copy and distribute information for students and educators – a benefit or an obstacle?

Technology Standards 8.1 and 8.2

2014■Adopted by New Jersey

State Board of Education October 1, 2014.

■LEAs are required to implement the revised Standard 8 by September 2015.

Revision Summary

● Grade bands were changed throughout Standard 8 to align with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS)

● Standard 8.1 (Education Technology)● Updated technology skill sets and terminology● Greater cross curricular applications● Addresses Legislation (A3292 Sca (1R) ) that requires

instruction on the responsible use of social media for middle school students

● Aligns more closely with International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) Standards

Page 8: 2014 Technology Standards: Adopt, Plan, Perform (APP) 8.1 Educational Technology 8.2 Technology Education, Engineering, Design, and Computational Thinking:

Revision Summary

● Standard 8.2 (Technology Education)

● Adds a new strand entitled “Computational Thinking: Programming”Greater cross curricular applications

● Aligns more closely with International Technology and Engineering Educators Association (ITEEA) Stan

● The standards have greater cross curricular applications

Activity

Pair and ShareReview a strand to identify what you perceive to be:● positive impact resulting from standards

revision● most significant hurdle to overcome to adoption

Record the top item for each to seek strategies to overcome.

Implementing the Standards

■Students know how to use Technology■Educators must facilitate what children do with

technology to engage them and empower their learning.

■Inventory what you have, don’t be blinded by what is missing.

Page 15: 2014 Technology Standards: Adopt, Plan, Perform (APP) 8.1 Educational Technology 8.2 Technology Education, Engineering, Design, and Computational Thinking:

Do you know what is expected from you in your classroom?

■Unpacking a standard allows the teacher to identify the knowledge and skills necessary to successfully learn and utilize a skill.

■The “Unpacking Process” clearly outlines the learning objectives and the learning goals.

Page 16: 2014 Technology Standards: Adopt, Plan, Perform (APP) 8.1 Educational Technology 8.2 Technology Education, Engineering, Design, and Computational Thinking:

What is the Unpacking Process?

Who - What- How- Why1. Select a grade level appropriate technology

standard.■Underline the nouns to determine the what■Circle the verbs to determine the how■Highlight the desired learning outcome■Determine the level of cognitive knowledge using

Bloom’s Taxonomy.

2. Create a graphic organizer / chart on which you will record the information

Unpacking Example

What is an activity that addresses this standard and any content area?

Working with a partner:

1. Select one strand and “unpack” it Underline the nouns, circle the verbs, determine the level of Bloom’s Taxonomy required.

2. Create a graphic organizer to record your work. (word, excel, sheets, Google)

3. List a grade appropriate activity that you could do in your classroom to address the standard.

Standard 8 Empowers Learners and Learning Across

the Curriculum

Pedagogical models which support implementation

■Flipped Classroom ■Technology, Pedagogy and Content Knowledge Framework

(TPACK)■Understanding by Design Framework (UBD)■Universal Design for Learning (UDL)■Others - many research proven methods

Page 23: 2014 Technology Standards: Adopt, Plan, Perform (APP) 8.1 Educational Technology 8.2 Technology Education, Engineering, Design, and Computational Thinking:

Pedagogical Approach

TPACK is a framework Technology is not the focus of the activity, instead it supports learning in other content areas creating authentic learning experiences. Pedagogy, content knowledge and technology come together to develop a deeper understanding.
