2014 Texas Tree Conference
W elcome to the 2014 ISA Texas Tree Conference, for what has become a premier event in the tree care industry. This year’s theme is ‘Surviving ExTrREEmes’ and we hope you will grow your knowledge, skills and network.
At this conference we will also con nue our history of providing outstanding educa on programs featuring na onally and interna onally known speakers, the latest in tree research and arboriculture, an awards luncheon, a recep on with exhibitors and numerous networking opportuni es.

Dr. Tom Smiley, Researcher, Bartle Tree Laboratory, Charlo e, NC
Dr. Tom Smiley is an arboricultural researcher at the Bartle Tree Research Laboratory in Charlo e, NC and an adjunct professor of Urban Forestry at Clemson University. Dr. Smiley is ac ve in the arboriculture industry and has co‐authored many of the ISA’s Best Management Prac ces. His research that has lead to improved methods of increasing sidewalk longevity near trees, protec ng trees from lightning, improving tree root growth in compacted soil and predic ng tree failures.
Dr. Francesco Ferrini, Professor, University of Florence (Italy)
Dr. Francesco Ferrini is a Professor, Department of Agrifood and Environmental Science at the University of Florence (Italy). He is a member of the ISA Board and the past President of the Italian ISA Chapter. He has published more than 220 scien fic and technical papers and he has given over 100 talks in interna onal and na onal congresses. In 2010 he was the recipient of L.C. Chadwick Award. He is the Senior Director of the scien fic magazine Advances in Hor cultural Sciences and Associate Editor of ISA’s Arboriculture & Urban Forestry.
Dr. John Ball, Professor, South Dakota State University, Brookings, SD
John Ball is a Professor of Forestry at South Dakota State University where he instructs courses in arboriculture and forestry. Dr. Ball also teaches rock climbing at the university as well as the emergency medical technician courses for nursing. He also serves as the campus arborist. Dr Ball has conducted research in a wide range of arboricultural subjects including tree worker performance and safety. Prior to SDSU he managed tree care companies in the East and Midwest.
Skip Kincaid, Consul ng Urban Forester, Davey Resource Group, St. Louis, MO
Skip Kincaid is the Senior Consul ng Urban Forester with Davey Resource Group and is based in St. Louis, MO. Skip has taught five ISA Tree Risk Assessment Qualifica on (TRAQ) courses here in Texas. He served on the ISA commi ee that developed the creden al and assisted with reviews of standards and BMP's that impact tree risk assessment. He is currently the Chairman of the ISA Cer fica on Board. Skip also provides urban forestry informa on to municipali es, architects, engineers, and a orneys.

How many mes are you asked, what’s wrong with this tree? This can be both your favorite ques on and your hardest ques on. We have designed a full day of discussions to comprehensively address the topic of tree and landscape diagnosis from four different perspec ves. These are clinical approaches to plant disease diagnosis, the science behind tree response to pathogens and symptom development, diagnosis in the field for the commercial arborist, and an entomologist’s view of iden fying insect issues. The four areas will be covered in concurrent sessions so that there will be the opportunity for interac ons with the experts.
