District 9 Update

Many events affecting the lives of dental students happened during the summer of this year. While many students were busy on vacation, working a summer job, studying for boards, research or a myriad of other things, the leaders of ASDA's District 9 were busy hosting their first ever cabinet retreat.

This retreat was neither a series of team building exercises, nor was it an excuse to get together just to have a good time. Instead this two day retreat consisted of a mixture of business for the district, networking, and even a little bit of studying. Although our official business didn't start until noon, every morning began with many of the attendees studying while others shared testing strategies and study materials. Friday afternoon consisted of meetings between the chapter leaders and the District 9 Trustee and Communications Chair on a chapter by chapter basis. By meetings with each chapter individually we were able to share ideas between chapters, and assist chapters on dealing with issues that they have had in the past. Saturday's schedule was similar, but instead of chapter leaders meeting, it consisted of meetings between the district committees and the District 9 Trustee and Communications Chair. Although we have been meeting with the committees on a regular basis prior to the retreat, what we were able to accomplish with those meetings pales in comparison to the amount of work and progress we were able to accomplish here.

While not every district has a cabinet retreat, it is a necessity to ensure the continued growth of districts and the chapters that comprise them. By increasing cross-chapter collaboration not only helps with growth, but also strengthens the leadership of the district.

Letter from the Editor

! I think the rest of the DS3’s would agree with me when I say that the summer of 2014 felt like a breath of fresh air. Finally we were done with the dreaded DS2 year. Finally we were scheduled to be in the clinics more often than being in the classroom. Things were changing in a very good way. !! The summer also brought change to our ASDA chapter as the upcoming executive members stepped into their new leadership roles. New initiatives like ASDA Get Fit have been created and new events like Casino Royale are being planned. Maybe it’s simply the sunshine, but from my point of view, the future is looking bright. !!

Back to the Basics This summer Shak Feroz became OU ASDA’s new

president. We asked him what it is like to take on this new role and what his goals are for the future of our chapter.

Everyone has heard the saying “you’ve got big shoes to fill…” or some variation of this quote. And granted it is a cheesy and overused saying, it dose depict what being Oklahoma ASDA’s president has been like. Over the past two years, under both Seth Brooks ’14 and Daryn Lu ’15, our ASDA chapter has skyrocketed; each year surpassing the last. So coming into this position, following these two, has been a large task; but one I’m truly excited for. Oklahoma has had one of the strongest ASDA chapters across all 65 dental schools in the US, and my goal for this year is to continue this trend. !

This year our theme is “Back to the Basics” which will allow us to refocus on what brought Oklahoma’s chapter to this point: our members. I feel it is crucial that Oklahoma ASDA members see the value of joining our chapter and attending the various events. By doing so, our members are investing in themselves and the profession. Our ASDA chapter is working to create opportunities and direction for our members that will stay with them far after their time at the College of Dentistry. I believe that the skills and resources our members attain from an organization like ASDA will help further their dental careers. That is why I have shifted our focus to membership and building strong leaders that will help grow and impact the dental profession. Our chapter has recently launched ‘ASDA GetFit’, a yearlong health initiative with a monthly event that recharges and encourages members to stay fit and maintain a healthy lifestyle. We have also planned a new formal social event, Casino Royale, to allow our members a unique opportunity to socialize with faculty and vendors outside the walls of the school. Additionally with the help of our Title sponsors, Oklahoma ASDA is very proud to offer six scholarships for members to join officers at the three national conferences throughout the year. The goal behind Oklahoma ASDA’s direction this year is to increase member participation on both the local and national level. With our member’s support and through the hard work of all the ASDA Officers, this year will be a great success.

ASDA’s !National Lobby Day

in !Washington D.C.

Every now and then, being in dental school affords the opportunity to be involved in something bigger than just the daily grind. This last April I flew to Washington D.C. with Justin Young and Matthew Bridges for the National Lobby Day hosted by National ASDA. Every school in the nation sends delegates to storm the capitol with bills that will directly reflect on our student loans, our future practices, and our profession as a whole. The first day I arrived we were able to take a couple of hours to see the monuments and be tourists. Being my first time on the east coast I was enamored with all the beauty and history that D.C. has to offer, and I did not have nearly enough time. On the second day, we attended a huge convention where all the delegates met to learn about the new bills and how to communicate them to our Senators and representatives from each state. The opportunity to meet students from other schools with the same passion I have was really inspiring. On our last day in D.C. , we s tormed the cap i to l . Over 400 representatives from dental schools around the nation met with its government leaders to discuss three very important bills - loan repayment, loan interest rates, and funding that will enable dental offices to do free work for special cases. I will admit that a few of the offices were a bit intimidating at first. However, after introductions were made and a few laughs were shared, every person I met was friendly and willing to talk not only about the important bills, but they were also interested in getting to know us. The entire trip was something I will remember for the rest of my life and it will leave a lasting mark on the responsibility I owe my profession to insure not only its survival but its future success. Get out of your comfort zone and get involved in a campus organization to find out for yourself just what real change is all about.

The  Good  Shepherd  Mission  Clinic  has  been  off  to  an  amazing  start  since  the  recent  renovation  of  the  clinic.    Renovations  were  completed  in  Spring  of  2014  largely  under  the  direction  and  design  of  Dr.  Frank  Lipsinic.  Most  of  the  students  at  OUCOD  did  not  have  the  opportunity  to  see  the  old  clinic,  but  I  can  assure  you  that  this  new  clinic  is  a  blessing.  The  vision  of  how  this  clinic  could  serve  the  community  is  being  realized  and  continuing  to  move  forward.  The  clinic  is  open  to  see  patients  5  days  a  week.  All  patients  that  are  seen  on  the  medical  side  of  the

clinic  also  qualify  to  be  seen  in  the  dental  clinic  during  regular  business  hours  on  weekdays.    This  has  allowed  for  patients  who  could  not  otherwise  afford  health  care  to  be  assessed  and  treated  in  both  medicine  and  dentistry.                    It  would  be  absolutely  impossible  for  the  clinic  to  run  without  the  new  office  and  clinical  staff.  They  have  been  amazing  to  work  with  and  their  hard  work  is  what  allows  us  to  use  this  wonderful  facility.    Dr.  Jeannie  Bath  has  accepted  the  position  as  the  lead  supervising  dentist  at  the  clinic  and  has  been  wonderful  to  work  with.  She  is  truly  driven  by  the  desire  to  help  those  in  need  and  it  shows  in  the  hard  work  she  has  put  into  the  clinic.  The  assistants  and  staff  do  an  fantastic  job  and  deserve  all  the  credit  for  how  efficiently  the  daily  operations  are  running.                    On  Monday  nights  during  the  school  year  many  students  have  been  volunteering  their  time  from  5pm-‐8pm  to  perform  free  extractions  for  patients.    We  can  see  up  to  17  patients,  operating  out  of  7  chairs  in  one  evening  thanks  to  all  the  staff  and  volunteers  involved.  On  every  other  Tuesday  night,  Good  Shepherd  holds  a  pediatric  dental  clinic  that  offers  free  dental  care  to  qualified  children  in  the  community.  This  service  is  vitally  important  to  get  children  the  care  that  they  need.  It  offers  most  restorative  services  that  would  be  found  in  a  private  clinic.      We  have  recently  began  a  denture  clinic  that  operates  on  Thursday  nights  and  will  provide  dentures  for  qualified  patients  of  the  clinic.  We  have  an  in-‐house  laboratory  and  denture  technician  to  do  all  the  teeth  set-‐ups  and  waxing  and  we  have  an  outside  laboratory  to  perform  the  processing  of  the  dentures.    A  few  student  volunteers  and  several  dental  school  faculty  run  the  denture  program  and  make  it  possible  for  patients  to  and  have  a  smile  again.                  Thank  you  very  much  to  everyone  whom  has  been  involved  in  volunteering.  You  have  made  it  possible  to  provide  this  care  to  the  community.  The  new  Good  Shepherd  Mission  Clinic  has  been  made  possible  by  private  donations  and  state  funding.  It  has  offered  so  many  people  in  our  community  the  opportunity  to  have  great  care  provided  in  an  exceptional  facility.  If  you  have  a  chance,  come  out  to  tour  the  clinic  or  volunteer.  -‐  Taylor  Barton,  Class  of  2015
