Just a few short months away from our 50th celebrations, we are already reflecting on our heritage and this summer our Festival at 50 programme features performances in venues with unique and historic links to our past in addition to re-establishing the Harrogate Festival Orchestra featuring the finest international musicians at work today, under the baton of the visionary Ben Crick. Whilst the past provided our foundations, the Harrogate Festival also celebrates the new, with two commissions, the first a performance of one of Tavener’s last works, performed by the quartet for which it was written; the Medici Quartet, whilst Malcolm Neesam’s latest production recalls the life of Duchess George and her time in Harrogate during WWI, featuring special guest performances from Edward Fox & Joanna David. This year, the Festival season begins with the arrival of the Spiegeltent playing host to the Gypsy Queens, Gary Crosby’s Groundation, Kitten and the Hip and of course the hot-ticket Harrogate Children’s Festival.

The season of great artists continues with none other than the Jazz icon, Wynton Marsalis, launching his UK tour in Harrogate with a show that celebrates the 75th anniversary of iconic record label Blue Note. The ever-popular John Wilson Orchestra swings into town with the sumptuous sounds of the great MGM musicals. And Bellowhead, famed for their exhilarating live performances with their 11-strong band, are not just a concert, they’re an occasion.

Our Young Musician Series has been hailed by Lesley Garrett CBE - one of its early alumni - for ‘shaping the nation’s musical landscape’. We honour this accolade in our 2014 Series with the addition of young folk musicians curated by BBC2 Folk Award winners, Bellowhead.

Meanwhile fellow Guest Curator Gabby Young brings her exuberant seven-piece band and theatrically energetic show to the Spiegeltent ensuring we push the boundaries of the new and unexpected.

2014 also welcomes a new Artist-in –Residence – James Rhodes, described as the ‘Nigel Kennedy’ of the piano. Rhodes isn’t your average classical musician, dispensing with the formal strait-jacketed approach to conventional classical performance whilst keeping the music itself resolutely classical, you can see Rhodes in action in both Revolution Bar and in the Royal Hall as part of his residency.

Joining the world-class music is world-class literature.

Bigger and better than ever, there’s a killer line-up for Europe’s largest celebration of the genre that just won’t die. J.K. Rowling, writing under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith, appears at the Festival with her only UK appearance, in conversation with Val McDermid. They join a star line-up of crime authors including Ann Cleeves, John Harvey, Sophie Hannah, Lynda La Plante, Laura Lippman, Peter May, Denise Mina and SJ Watson, alongside a Broadchurch TV special featuring actress, Olivia Colman.

Venturing boldly into books, the Raworths Harrogate Literature Festival welcomes explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes, alongside a wealth of intrepid authors, from war correspondent Kate Adie to adventurous foodie, Jay Rayner, and investigative journalist Ben Aaronovitch.

The irresistibly swinging Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and its musical director Wynton Marsalis celebrate the 75th anniversary of iconic record label Blue Note. Launching in the UK right here in Harrogate this show celebrates an anniversary that embraces the entire history of modern jazz from bebop to the dancefloor.

Performing big band arrangements of unforgettable classics from the treasure trove of a label that’s been home to a host of major jazz stars down the decades – Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, McCoy Tyner, Art Blakey, Horace Silver and Bud Powell, to name but a few.

The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra is made up of 15 of the finest soloists, ensemble players, and arrangers in jazz music today. Their mission is to entertain and enrich in the belief that jazz is the ultimate expression of individuality, freedom, and optimism.

Festival at 50 – In celebration of the forthcoming 50th Festival anniversary we have begun to reflect on our past programmes and in 2014 have recreated The Harrogate Festival Orchestra, first formed in 1966. In addition we are working with our Artist in Residence concert pianist James Rhodes who will be performing in a new venue – Revolution – a building with historic links to the Festival as a traditional performance venue and as the offices of the Fesitivals.

Celebrating Tavener – The Medici Quartet present a co-commission of one of Tavener’s last works, coupled with a pre-concert talk on the personal relationship violinist Paul Robertson had with Sir John Tavener. In addition, Stile Antico will be holding a workshop teaching some of Tavener’s most famous pieces, and finally, Josephine Knight and Patricia Rozario present a personal programme of Bach meets Tavener as two musicians who both had a personal and musical relationship with Tavener.

Commissions - A new piece entitled That Most Gracious and Noble Lady will receive its world premiere this July, presented by Edward Fox OBE and Joanna David, written by Malcolm Neesam. This event recalls the life of Duchess George’s time in Harrogate during WW1, featuring never before heard material from the Royal Archives.

Our second commission performed by the Medici Quartet is from Tavener, one of his last works before his death in 2013.

Commemorating WW1 – Pity of War presents Timothy West, Matthew Trusler and Martin Roscoe in a programme featuring music written during WW1 and readings from Sir Wilfred Owen, whilst our new commission That Most Gracious and Noble Lady also reflects life in Harrogate during WW1.

Artist in Residence – Pianist James Rhodes will be presenting events over two days of the final weekend as part of a short residency with Harrogate Festival. Known for his unique approach to classical music and dedication to reaching new audiences that may feel classical music is too elitist. Included is a free recital taking place in Revolution night club to encourage a new audience to engage with classical music, plus an opportunity to engage with James Rhodes through an informal Q&A.

Shakespeare – 2014 celebrates the 450th Anniversary of Shakespeare’s birth, and the Festival marks this great writer through our outdoor theatre with the magnificent Oddsock’s & Ben Crystal’s The Once & Future Shakespeare within the Raworth’s Literature programme.

Bike Story is a Grand Depart road trip that explores our long-term love affair with the bicycle. It is an Animating the Route commission and one of the centrepieces of the Yorkshire Festival 2014.

Visiting towns and villages around Yorkshire, Bike Story is an outdoor performance that brings to life the ups and downs of getting about on two wheels. Written by Mike Kenny and Martin Ripley, and directed by Alan Dix, the production weaves tales collected from people across the region - from casual lobbyists to fanatics, bike lovers to car users, lobbyists to climate change scientists - to create an accessible, joyful and thought provoking performance for all ages.

Working in partnership with KI Concerts from the USA , this unique event crosses the Atlantic as California’s Los Gatos High School creates harmonies with Harrogate’s very own ensembles: the Fisher Singers Community Choir, the Harrogate Band, and the St John Fisher High School Concert Band.

Performing a repertoire including works from Mozart, Ralph Vaughan Williams and Ticheli, sit back in the beauty and sunshine of Harrogate’s famed Valley Gardens and experience this harmonious gathering of choirs, brass bands and wind orchestras.

His international stature has ensured his works are a fixture in the repertoire of concert bands, but it wouldn’t be sporting to celebrate this American-British alliance without an uplifting and stirring finale of Land of Hope and Glory and the Battle Hymn of the Republic.

At the age of 15, cellist Laura van der Heijden was awarded the title of BBC Young Musician 2012. Her playing promises a spellbinding performance of incredible creative intensity. A remarkable young talent, already a multiple-award winning musician, Laura studied with renowned Russian cellist, Leonid Gorokhov.

She may still be a teenager, but The Times raved about her mesmerising performances and the BBC hailed the captivating beauty of her playing. Prepare to be enchanted by her wonderful expressivity.

Hannah Stone was appointed as the Official Harpist to H.R.H. The Prince of Wales in 2011 and has performed on several occasions for members of the Royal Family.

A graduate of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and Universitat Mozarteum, Salzburg, she is regarded as one of the foremost harpists of her generation with prizes from the Franz Joseph Reinl Competition in Vienna and the International Harp Competition in Caernarfon. A graceful performer, she is praised for her variety and breadth of tone.

Viv Groskop: I Laughed, I Cried

Viv Groskop is a prolific journalist (Guardian, Mail on Sunday, Red), BBC Radio 4 broadcaster and stand-up comedian. She first performed with Stephen Fry in a Footlights show in Cambridge at the age of 18 and then did nothing on stage for 20 years. After several false starts and a lucky break hosting Jo Brand’s book tour, she started doing stand-up

properly in 2011 and reached the Finals of Funny Women in 2012.

In her remarkable account of how she became a stand-up comedian Viv did 100 gigs on 100 consecutive nights, from Atlanta, Georgia to a bikers’ bar in Truro. She laughs, and her audience can’t help joining in. This is a true story about stand-up. Forming part of the Festival’s celebration of the life of Sir John Tavener, Bach Meets Tavener brings together two of his closest associates.

Patricia Rozario – one of the world’s leading sopranos - forged a unique musical partnership with Tavener and he created more than thirty works for her, including the Akhmatova Songs.

Tavener also composed and dedicated Mahavakyas for the international cellist, Josephine Knight, inspired by the Sarabande from Bach’s Suite No.1 for solo cello - completed shortly before his death last year.

Playing Bach’s Sarabande amongst Tavener’s magnificent, meditative compositions, this is a personal celebration of one of the finest ever composers of our age, featuring two great musicians who inspired his distinctive work.

Join founder of the Medici Quartet Paul Robertson in an exclusive pre-concert talk as he discusses his personal relationship with John Tavener, particularly through the illnesses they both suffered. Despite formally retiring at the Harrogate International Festival in 2007, the Medici Quartet will be returning to Harrogate this July for a very special concert. Founder and violinist, Paul Robertson, leads their performance of Sir John Tavener’s final work, Scatter Roses over my Tears – a meditation over a verse of the Sufi poet, Rumi. The quartet has an unrivaled reputation and this truly is a rare opportunity to see one of Britain’s greatest chamber groups celebrating a great British composer.

To mark the centenary of the Great War, Harrogate’s most-famous acting dynasty return to perform one of Harrogate’s most extraordinary stories.

Distinguished actors, husband and wife Edward Fox OBE and Joanna David, recount the poignant war-time achievements of “that most gracious and noble lady” - The Grand Duchess.

The Grand Duchess George of Russia was the pinnacle of European royalty. The aunt of Prince Philip, daughter of the King of Greece, grand-daughter of the King of Denmark, she married the Grand Duke George Mikhailovich in 1900 becoming a member of the Russian Imperial family.

Before she could return to Russia in August 1914, the Grand Duchess came to

Harrogate to collect her two daughters. The Great War broke out. Just days later, she established a hospital in Harrogate for wounded servicemen. She went on to work tirelessly to establish further military hospitals.

Researched and written by Harrogate Historian Malcolm Neesam, her moving humanitarian plight is told in this poignant and occasionally amusing performance, drawing on diaries and letters – some of which will be read in public for the first time, thanks to special permission from the Royal Archives.

The inspiring story of the Grand Duchess George of Russia and her time in Harrogate during the Great War, written by Malcolm Neesam and commissioned by Harrogate International Festivals.

After suffering mental health illness, which prevented Rhodes from taking up a scholarship at Guildhall, a chance meeting with renowned agent Franco Panozzo, led to tutorage under teacher Edoardo Strabbioli in Italy.

James unique approach to classical music alongside his personal struggle has attracted much media interest. He’s appeared in documentaries for BBC Four, and presented his own TV series ‘James Rhodes Piano Man’ for Sky Arts. He’s also performed with Stephen Fry in ‘A Classical Affair’ at the Barbican, with sell-out festival appearances all over the world.

Rhodes’ concerts provide a unique experience for his audiences as he explores the personal interaction music can provide. He will be performing a programme including Chopin and Schubert, as well as gauging the audience and adding some spectacular surprises.

James Rhodes is a man on a mission to debunk the idea of stuffiness that can surround the world of classical music. Everyone should experience its splendour. Dubbed the Russell Brand of piano, the revolutionary pianist reclaims Revolution, playing in the building that used to host music events in the early days of the Festival.

The first core classical pianist to be signed to the world’s largest rock label, Warner Bros Records, he’s played the Latitude Festival, sharing stages with Florence + the Machine and The National. His iconoclastic approach weaves stand-up anecdotes about his life and those of the composers into his performance, offering an immersive experience that has won him, and classical music, a dedicated new following. Celebrity followers include Stephen Fry and Derren Brown.

Harrogate International Festivals & Skipton Building Society Camerata combines to present The Harrogate Festival Orchestra.

In 1966, the Harrogate Festival Orchestra was created especially for the first ever Harrogate International Festival. Almost 50 years on, the Festival has recreated this historic event, with a brand new Harrogate Festival Orchestra drawing on the best national and international talent.

Celebrating the rich history of the Harrogate International Festivals, the Orchestra features international cellist Raphael Wallfisch, performing Elgar’s exquisite Cello Concerto. Wallfisch’s world-wide career has seen him perform with the London Philharmonic, the Berlin Symphony, and play the BBC Proms.

This triumphant, uplifting concert stars a wealth of national and international musicians, including the trumpeter for BBC Radio 4’s Daily Service - Anthony Thompson - and New Zealand born cellist Rod Skipp whose demand sees him appear regularly on BBC Radio 3 and Songs of Praise. The Skipton Camerata celebrate their 10th anniversary this year having performed in prestigious venues over the years including Harewood House and Bridgewater Hall. Plus their extensive educational work has brought classical music into schools all across Yorkshire.

The Harrogate Festival Orchestra will be conducted by the visionary Ben Crick, who was made gained a BBC Music Fellowship in 2013.
