What is STAAR?• Replaced the TAKS test• Stands for “State of Texas Assessment of

Academic Readiness” • Tests skills and objectives that the state

expects all students to master to show they are ready for the next grade level.

• Most significant change to the assessment is the increase of rigor in both the assessment and the performance standards for all grades and subjects.

What happens to prepare for the test?

Spring TrainingTutorials geared toward specific needs of

students1. All students attend a group2. 40 minutes per day on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.3. Weekly assessments given on Friday that cover objectives practiced and taught during tutorials.

Writing TestApril 1st & 2nd

• Writing testing is divided into two days of testing.

• Each day the students will complete two parts of the test.

• The first part is multiple choice questions on revising and editing of passages.

Writing Test• The second part is the written

composition.• Students will write two compositions on

the STAAR test. Personal Narrative & Expository

• All students in Texas are given the same prompts to respond to.

• We are not able to read the prompt to the students unless they raise their hand and ask that it be read to them.

• We are also not allowed to remind them to use any of the prewriting or revising strategies that we have taught them.

Writing Test

• Compositions are scored on a scale of 0-4. (Example of grading rubric is in the student agenda.)

• 2 and up is considered passing, but they must also score a 70% on the multiple choice.

• The composition is also graded according to how students incorporate the 6 traits of writing.– Voice - Organization– Sentence Fluency - Word Choice– Conventions - Ideas

•Test is challenging. Includes many higher level thinking questions that require greater use of their reading strategies.

• Word problem questions that require multiple steps to solve.

• Math test taking strategies taught to students include:- QDPAC- Problem Solving Strategies- Label every picture

• Emphasize to your child to show work for every problem and go back and check!!

The Night Before/Morning of the Test

Students should:• Get a good night of sleep• Eat a healthy breakfast (protein,

not sugar)• Keep cell phones at home.• Come prepared to do their best!

school?•A healthy snack and bottle of

water (although one will be provided)

•2 books to read after the test

Morning of the Test• Make sure that your child DOES

NOT have a cell phone in his/her possession the day of the test.

• IF YOUR CHILD IS FOUND IN POSSESSION OF A CELL PHONE, THE TEST COULD BE SCORED “0 (other)” THIS SHOWS A TESTING IRREGULARITY AND WILL CAUSE THE TEST TO BE INVALIDATED.

Day of the TestHow will the classroom look?

•There will be no visuals to aid students. All posters, word walls, and even the calendar will be covered or removed.

•Desks will all be separated.

Day of the TestWhat is the teacher’s role in the classroom?

• Facilitate and monitor• Make sure students are working

independently • Keep materials secure

Day of the TestCan the teachers help students?• No. Teacher may not help in any way.

Teachers are strictly there to read directions, monitor, and collect materials.

• Because we cannot help, if a question is asked, a teacher might respond by reminding the student to just do the best they can.

• Teachers and students are not allowed to discuss the test at any point in the day or after the test.

Day of the TestWhat is the student’s role?• They are to use strategies learned in

class.• They are to work quietly and do their

best.• They have 4 hours to complete test.• When 4 hours has passed, we will collect

all tests even if a student is not finished.

Day of the TestWill my child have a break?• A brief snack break• A lunch break once all tests have

been collected and secured• Students are encouraged to bring a

sack lunch from home or order one from the cafeteria.

he/she is finished?•Read a book.•Lay his/her head down.•Stay quiet so that others still working can do their best.

Results/ScoresStudent performance on test will be described and labeled into one of the three performance categoriesLevel III: Advanced Academic PerformanceLevel II: Satisfactory Academic PerformanceLevel I: Unsatisfactory Academic Performance

When the state sends the results, we will forward them on to you.

Reminders•No parents allowed on

campus on any of the testing days.

•No cell phones.•Encourage your child to take

their time, use their strategies, and go back to check their work.
