2014 SPRING NEWSLETTER

Dear Friends,

What a wonderful year this has been! Through hard work and cooperation so many

goals were realized. As we say goodbye to another 8th grade graduating class, it is interesting

to note some statistics. Our Parish School graduated 27 students on June 3rd. This was a tal-

ented class who will be sincerely missed. Among these students there were eight South Caro-

lina Junior Scholars, two students qualified as Duke TIP State Scholars, two were selected to

attend the Scholars Academy at CCU, and eight were chosen to attend the Academy of Arts, Science and Technology.

Eleven graduates had A averages in every subject.

These students held leadership positions in Student Council and Vocations Club. They played basketball, volley-

ball, soccer, and golf. Many of the girls were members of the cheer squad. The class led the middle school show choir

in a fantastic music and dance program. Each student completed their service hours and then went beyond the re-

quirement to complete additional hours of community service. This class logged over 1650 service hours during the

school year. This closely knit group will head in different directions, but are sure to remain friends throughout the

years ahead. We await news of their future accomplishments! Best wishes, Class of 2014!

Sincerely, Molly Halasz

Our Field Trip to Playcard

In May, the second and third graders enjoyed an

incredible day at Playcard Environmental

Education Center. Through a series of

activities created by Mr. Ben Abercrombie,

the director of Playcard, the students were

able to explore the relatedness of plants,

animals, soil, water and human beings

through the world of a black water swamp.

Students went fishing, they used iPads to

learn about the birds and animals they

encountered while exploring the woods, and

students engaged in trust building exercises

that required a lot of teamwork. Mr. Aber-

crombie said he was very impressed with the

behavior of the St. Andrew School children,

and many children said they felt very proud

of their achievements on this field trip.

Last Dance At the end of each school year, our 8th grade students and faculty/staff are treated to a dinner and

dance to celebrate their years at St. Andrew. Our student council sponsors this event with balloons,

flowers, and a delicious meal catered by David Demer, of Pastria 811, and father of Kailey and

Sydney, alums of St. Andrew. After this delicious meal of Italian fare, dancing and dessert follows.

At the conclusion of the evening, female students are offered a carnation from their dads,

male students offer a carnation to their moms. It is a poignant and fun night for everyone involved!

Congratulations, Graduating Class of 2014!

In the spring, the Teenie Greenie club added more flowers to our garden. We

also purchased a wind-chime and a bird feeder. We are excited to see this

little part of our Earth bloom!

It has been a pleasure to have had the opportuni-

ty to work in the office at St. Andrew Catholic

School for the past ??? years. It has been interest-

ing, enlightening, challenging, intense, crazy, fun

and most definitely not boring! I have enjoyed interacting with the

faculty, parents but most of all, with the children. My favorite part of my job was watching our

children grow, not only physically, but intellectually and spiritually. And grow they did! But now

it's time for me to step back and let others enjoy the pleasures that I have had for all those

years. If it be God's will, my retirement years will be spent traveling in our RV and volunteering

at National and State Parks, but not until the summer of 2015. Please keep me in your prayers

as I will you.

Blessings, Lori Derr

Being a part of this great Catholic school and parish has meant so

much to me. Teaching takes much time and effort, but to reach the young people at such a crucial time in their lives, and to see them develop their relationship with Jesus Christ makes it totally worth

it. If I can only make a small difference in a teenager’s life, with the help of God, so be it! I loved St. Andrew's for all 10 years and have made extraordinary friend-

ships. Life goes on and I will travel a new

path. Let Go, Let God!! He'll lead the way.

Until We Meet Again

The first graders have enjoyed listening

to Mrs. Hancheck read all of the books in

the Junie B. Jones series throughout the

year. For the end of the year party, the

first graders were able to dress as their

favorite character. What a fun day they

all had dressing up and doing some fun

Junie B. Jones' themed activities!
