The growing activity and progress in organicelectronics, together with the need for versatile, lightweight, compact, inexpensive, and field-deployable chemical and biological sensors, has prompted the development of OFET- andOLED-based sensors, organic semiconductorand surface plasmon resonance sensors, organic semiconductor-based photodetectors, and sensitive organic materials for sensingapplications.Suchapplicationsincludeindustrial, environmental, food and beverage, medical, biosensing and homeland security. Transistor-,OLED-, other organic semiconductor-basedsensingtechnologies,andthosebasedoncarbonnanotubes(CNTs)andgraphenearepromisingforfast,simultaneousdetectionofmultipleanalytesutilizing sensor micro/nano arrays. Continuedresearch and development efforts are neededto further improve sensor performance, andconsequently, manufacturability.
Organic bioelectronics is also attractingincreasing interest. The field explores chemical, ionic, and optoelectronic attributes of organicmaterialsandtheir incorporation inbioelectronicdevices.Examplesofdevicesincludeionpumpsbased on conducting polymers, which havebeenusedtocontrolcellgrowthandconductingpolymerelectrodesformedicalimplants.Abetterunderstandingoftheorganic/livingtissueinterface,whichwill leadtothedesignofbetterbiosensorconcepts, remainsachallenge.
