Ms. Matz will discuss why and how the American Nurses Association (ANA) Safe Patient Handling and Mobility (SPHM) Interprofessional National Standards were developed. She will also elaborate on the content and purpose of each Standard and will describe methods to evaluate the status of each Standard.

At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:• Describe the purpose of the new standards.• Design a Safe Patient Handling and Mobility Program for their own organization based on the American Nurses

Association Standards.

Mary Willa Matz, MSPH, CPE, CSPHP, a professional ergonomist, is the national Patient Care Ergonomics program manager for the U.S. Veterans’ Health Administration and a primary consultant for other healthcare organizations.Since 1998, Ms. Matz has managed and led research teams in studying aspects of the science of patient handling and co-authored many peer-reviewed papers and book chapters on the subject. She was instrumental in the incorporation of safe patient handling protocols in the Guidelines for the Design and Construction of Health Care Facilities.

She represents the United States on the International Panel of Patient Handling Ergonomics and was the chair of the American Nurses’ Association Safe Patient Handling Standards Development Task Force. Ms. Matz received her Masters of Science in Industrial Hygiene from the University of South Florida in 1999, and was awarded the Advocacy Award for Improved Caregiver Safety in 2011 and the National Occupational Research Agenda (NORA) 2006 Partnering Award for Worker Health and Safety.

11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Plenary SessionTissue Viability and Patient Handling in the Care of the Obese PatientSusan Gallagher, PhD, MA, MSN, RN, CBN, WOCN, CSPHP, Senior Clinical Advisor, Celebration Institute

The aim of this session is to introduce clinical challenges that emerge with recent CMS changes; describe the basics of pressure ulcer assessment, prevention and intervention; and ask the question: “How do these issues impact the specific tissue viability needs of the complex patient and what are the patient handling solutions?” Practical clinical and economic issues will be discussed.

At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:• Name three immobility-related concerns.• Identify the patient at risk for Safe Patient Handling challenges.

• Describe recent economic issues pertaining to pressure ulcer development.

Susan Gallagher, PhD, MA, MSN, RN, CBN, WOCN, CSPHP, Senior Clinical Advisor at the Celebration Institute, Inc, Houston Texas, is a trained wound ostomy continence nurse, certified bariatric nurse, healthcare risk manager, and certified safe patient handling professional with over 25 years of experience working as a registered nurse. She has completed certificates for Six Sigma-Health Care and Six Sigma LEAN. Dr. Gallagher holds a masters degree in nursing, a masters degree in religion and social ethics, and a PhD in policy ethics. She is a recognized expert in safety and

outcomes with an emphasis on bariatrics, skin and wound care, safe patient handling and mobility, and risk and loss control. She served as Senior Bariatric Risk Analyst for Stevens and Lee Lawyers and Consultants from 2004 – 2010, providing on-site practice assessments for over 120 bariatric surgeons and facilities throughout the U.S. She lectures internationally on the interdisciplinary and organizational approach to improving patient care through established safety initiatives.

The aim of this interactive session is to explore practical ways to implement the Safe Patient Handling and Mobility Interprofessional National Standards. A step-by-step approach is presented, including a discussion of barriers to change, tips for championing the project, and ways to best start a SPHM dialogue with both healthcare recipients and healthcare workers across disciplines and practice settings. The new book titled Implementation Guide to the Safe Patient Handling and Mobility Interprofessional National Standards will be the resource for this hands-on course.

At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:• Describe the value of the Standards across practice settings and disciplines. • Create an action plan to implement one of the Standards.
