SLAM DUNK TO THE BEACH HISTORY: Slam Dunk to the

Beach is back. To properly put into perspective just how

prominent a place the Lewes, DE event carved out in the

basketball hierarchy, some stats are required. The

tournament, which hosted some of the nation’s premier

players, including LeBron James (’01), Dwight Howard

(’03), Kevin Durant (’03), Carmelo Anthony (’00) and

J.J. Redick (’01), was like a highway to the NBA.

Slam Dunk to the Beach featured 48 players who were

drafted by NBA teams during a 10-year stretch from 1998-

2007. During that time, 33 guys were taken in the opening

round. If you narrow it down to a six-year stretch of drafts

from 2001-2006, a remarkable 13 alums from Slam Dunk

to the Beach were chosen among the top-10 picks.

That means 22 percent of all top-10 selections during that

timeframe made their way through the First State,

including the second overall picks of the 2001, 2002 and

2007 drafts (Tyson Chandler, Jay Williams and Durant)

and the top overall choices of the 2003 and 2004 drafts

(James and Howard).

SF Rawle Alkins

- Ranked No. 9 small forward in class of 2016 and No. 35 overall prospect in that class by ESPN.com

- New York Daily News reported he made recent visits to Villanova, Indiana and North Carolina State in October

- Also holds offers from Florida, Kansas, and Louisville among others

- Told MSG Varsity on December 6, “I’m a vocal guy in practice. Vocal on the court and in the huddle. I expect a lot out of the guys. We’re

young, but we’re very talented. I tell my coach that all the time, winning is the only thing that’s on my mind. I want to create for others. I

don’t care about scoring, my stats. I just want to be a champion"

F Yashawn Bright

- Has earned scholarship offers from Fairfield and Niagara

- His summer coach Tim Brisco described Bright's strengths to Rivals.com. "He's a slasher who can score inside and out and is a great

leaper. He was a sleeper early on, but everybody knows about him now."

- New role this season in the starting lineup after coming off the bench last year

F Tyrone Cohen

- Has scholarship offer from Fairfield University

- Also has received interest from American, Boston U., George Washington, Hofstra, Quinnipiac, and Temple

- Committed to play collegiately at St. Joseph's University

- Prior to committing to the Hawks had offers from Temple, Creighton, Massachusetts and Drexel

- ESPN Insider describes him as a true floor general. "Kimble is a true point guard and proven player at the highest levels of competition.

He has an elite handle and understands how to utilize his naturally wider frame so that once he gets to his defender's hip, he's all but in the

paint. He can both run a team and be a playmaker and projects as a very dependable and effective point guard in the Atlantic 10."

G Zane Martin

- Played key role off the bench last season as Ss. Neumann Goretti won its four PIAA state championship in the last five years

- ZenithHoops.com described Martin as, "a physical specimen when slashing the basket and finishing through contact."

- Martin's head coach Carl Arrigale told CityOfBasketballLove.com that, "Martin is probably one of the best basketball players in the area

that people haven't heard of

G Quade Green

- CityOfBaksetballLove.com describes Green as, " a talented, young, high-major potential guard."

- LaMarr Kimble certainly sees the upside of his young teammate, telling CityOfBasketballLove.com, “He’s a real good shooter, a

knockdown shooter, so that’s kind of his role. And then he’s also a nasty defender and presses guys full court so once he just puts it all

together he’s going to be really good.”

- Scored game-high 18 points in first career high school start during Ss. Neumann Goretti's season-opening win over Philadelphia Electric
