Championship Rodeo. The evening is sponsored by Shamco Logging, Daves Radiator, Upper Peninsula Power Company and the Min-ers State Bank. Visit the Tough Enough To Wear Pink T-shirt booth to purchase all of your clothing and accessories. Proceeds will support Upper Peninsula Cancer Asso-ciations, to help cancer patients and survivors with all type of needs. Wear pink and help make a difference.

Danger Dave brings laughter to the showIRON RIVER Rodeo clown Danger Dave rolls into Iron River for the U.P. Championship Rodeo and will be sure to leave fans rolling with laughter July 19 and 20. David Whitmoyer, known by his stage name, Danger Dave, has been working his way through rodeo circuits as a bull fi ghter and rodeo enter-tainer for more than fi ve years. The 29-year-old native of Helena, Mont. has been fi ghting bulls since 2007. Fans can meet the rodeo star in the arena after the event, where he will be available.

Anthony Lucia returns as U.P. Rodeo announcerIRON RIVERAnthony Lucia has been named rodeo an-nouncer for this years U.P. Championship Rodeo at the Iron County Fairgrounds. He fi rst appeared in Iron River in 2011 as rodeo announcer and as the specialty act. We are pleased to have him back in the arena this year, said a rodeo spokesperson. Lucia grew up in the rodeo business traveling the country with his father, Tommy Lucia. Lucia began trick-roping at the age of 9, and performed at his fi rst event when he was 11 in Grand Rapids. Since that day, Lucia has performed at events from Raleigh, N.C., to Dillon, Mont., to the 2010 Great Lakes PRCA circuit fi nals in Louisville, Ky. At the 2010 Wrangler National Finals rodeo in Las Vegas, Lucia was twice featured as an opening act. Be-yond the rodeo arena, he made it to the semifi nals on the hit TV show Americas Got Talent on NBC. Anthony said, I traveled the country with my dad and hero, Tommy Lucia, since I was four years old - learning from him and refi ning my own skills. At 23, I went pro and have never looked back. I am a professional trickroper, announcer and team roper. I do what I do, and whatever gifts I have are on loan from God. My motto is electrify and glorify.

Whiplash the Rodeo Monkey rides into the arenaIRON RIVERWhiplash the Cowboy Monkey is truly a fan favorite, three-time Pro Rodeo Entertainer of the Year, and an international star who has been putting smiles on faces for years. He will be the specialty act at this years U.P. Championship Rodeo. Whiplash is a Capuchin monkey who has been riding since he was two years old. He travels the country herd-ing wild Barbados sheep at rodeos and events. Whiplash never misses a

chance to show his skills and cowboy spirit as he rides his trusty mount, Boogie. Whiplash has entertained crowds at rodeos, ball games and events all across North America and Europe. Whiplashs trainer, Tommy Lucia, has been a member of the Professional Rodeo Cow-boys Association since 1966. Lucia purchased Whiplash as a baby from the widow of an animal enthusiast in Miami. As Lucia raised the young monkey, he introduced him to bal-ancing on a saddle then to the familys dogs. Over time, the dogs became used to carrying Whiplash. They performed for years all over the world. Lucia has recently retired. Knowing how much the fans around the globe enjoy seeing Whiplash The Cowboy Monkey perform, Lucia decided to sell his famous act to a fellow PRCA card holder, Kenny Petet. Petet, of Stephenville, Texas, has worn many hats during his ro-deo career. He currently is a barrelman and owner/operator of the Gone With the Wind Chuckwagon Racing rodeo act. I am honored that Tommy Lucia believes in my ability, to select me to take over the reins of the most famous act in the PRCA, said Petet. Knowing how much rodeo fans and fans in general enjoy watching Whiplash perform, I am pleased to be able to continue his legacy.

Watch for body control and balance. Spurring is not required. Bull riders tend to be smaller, wiry men who look smaller still against the 1,500-2,000 pound animals. They ride with just a fl at-braidedloose rope pulled tight (not tied around the animal and held fast by the riding hand). Although the cowboy isnt required to spur, you will see many of them moving their feet, scrambling to keep contact with the bull, whose power is too great to permit just one lasting hold.

    Bull Riding

Watch the front-end spurring motion. Seemingly frantic, its deceptive. A good bareback rider is generally in better control of the ride than his wide-open style might indicate. But in this fl amboyant event, its wild that wins. The trick is to time the spurring motion with the horses bucking action. When the horse leaves the ground, the cowboy jerks his knees and his spurs come up to the shoulders. His feet fl y up, out and away from the horse. For the cowboy to stay in control, his feet must be back to the shoulders and against the neck when the horses front feet come back to the ground.

    Team Roping

Saddle Bronc RidingWatch for a sweeping, front-and-back spurring motion, buckrein held high. Ideally, the cowboy falls into a stylish rhythm with the horse, feet thrust full forward, toes turned out in the stirrups, as the broncs front feet touch the ground. Then as the horse jumps high, the rider crooks his knees, drawing his feet back, toes still turned out, along the sides until his spurs strike the back of the saddle. The feet go forward again as the bronc descends. Cowboy beware, however, for stylish though it may be, the horse is strong and moving fast and at whim could violently disrupt the rhythm.

Watch the heelers loop. Properly executed, a true art form. While the experts make team roping look easy, with fi ve entities involved, nothing is simple. The fi rst roper, the header, rides after the steer and

For the takedown, one horn is pushed low, the other lifted, nose tilted high. At about the time their horses reach the tail of the hard-running steer, the hazer (a mounted helper) keeps the steer moving straight while the steer wrestler, from the opposite side, begins transferring his weight from his horse to the steer. His horse runs on past, carrying the cowboy up to the horns and taking his feet out in front of the steer, in position for the cowboy to slow the steer, turn him and take him to the ground.

    Steer Wrestling

    Tie-Down Roping

    Barrel Racing

Watch the rider spec the next barrel even while rounding the one at hand. Fast, exciting and intensely competitive, womens barrel racing provides colorful contrast to the rugged action characterized by most rodeo contests. Yet as much, if not more, as in other events, horse

After the catch, watch the cowboys speed on the ground. Success depends upon the roper and horse working together, and some would say the

    Rodeo EventsRodeo Events

highly trained horse is the more important member of the team. The horse must quickly catch up to the calf, position the cowboy to rope it, then maintain tension on the rope as the cowboy dismounts, throws the calf and ties any three of its legs (usually two hind and one front). The tie must remain secure for six seconds after the roper remounts and permits the horse to slacken the rope.

and rider cooperation is vital to success. The three barrels are run in a cloverleaf pattern requiring quick turns at high speed to win. Times are so fast and close theyre measured in hundredths of a second.

ropes the horns or head, takes a daily (wraps the rope) around his saddle horn and turns his horse away, leading the steer. A second roper, the heeler, rides in, ropes the hind legs and takes his daily. In an instant, the horses face the steer, the ropes come snug, and a judge signals time. If but one hind leg is caught, a 5-second penalty is added.

Farewell from Miss U.P. Rodeo 2013POWERSFor those who do not know me, my name is Brooke Granquist and I am the 23 year old daughter of Dave and Cherie Granquist. I grew up in Powers, Mich. and have spent the past fi ve years in Marquette as I earned my bachelor of sci-ence degree in english from Northern Michigan Univer-sity. This fall, I plan to be-gin working towards my master of fi ne arts degree in creative writing, with a fi c-tion emphasis from National University. As my year as Miss U.P. Rodeo 2013 comes to an end, there are many emo-tions, people and experiences that pass through my mind. I cher-ish the amount of confi dence I have gained throughout my reign and have had endless opportunities to meet new people as the spokeswoman of the Upper Peninsula Championship Rodeo. After I was blessed with the 2013 title, I started my reign by joining the Great Lakes Rodeo queen and Lil Miss, Clara Churchill and Samantha Finch, in the Gwinn Daze parade. During the summer of 2013, I also attended the Iron County Fair where I took pictures with the 4-H participants during the livestock sale. At the U.P. State Fair, I had the privilege of handing out ribbons during the draft horse show and carrying the American fl ag before the horse pulls. Because of the people I met at the U.P. State Fair, I was asked to attend the Dickinson County Fair where I handed out ribbons and also had the pleasant surprise of meeting many veterans who served our country. Meeting and talking with them is truly an oc-casion that I will never forget. This year, I attended the Memorial Day parade in Carney, where I also got to represent the U.P. Championship Rodeo not only in the parade, but also during the National Anthem ceremony before the horse show began. Starting in June was a whirlwind of traveling to many rodeos and events. I attended the Carney Roundup Rodeo, Wisconsin River Pro Rodeo in Merrill, Great Lakes Rodeo in Marquette, Mid-Western Rodeo in Manawa, Fourth of July parade in Daggett, and the Heart of the North Rodeo in Spooner, Wis., where I signed numerous autographs, participated in grand entries, carried event fl ags, and helped by selling 50/50 tickets. So much time and effort has also been spent by the people I love and who support me every single step of the way. I would like to say a huge thank you to both of my parents, sister and friends. Without these people helping pack my countless outfi ts, making sure my horse was ready, and always carrying my lipstick, the fi nished product you see today would not have been possible. I would also like to say thank you to the fellow queens, queen con-testants, the U.P. Rodeo queen coordinator, Karen Marheine, the U.P. Rodeo photographer, Karen Paddock, the U.P. Rodeo board and anyone else who helped me in even the smallest possible way. Your encouragement and support has been greatly appreciated. Most importantly, I would like to thank God, who has put these type of people in my life and given me these opportunities. I truly have been blessed beyond what words can describe. Although my year as queen will end on July 20, I will always be a queen at heart. I will continually cherish the many friends I have gained as a result of rodeo, and I will never stop being a part of the rodeo community.

Sue Ohmdal currently resides in Iron River. As a young lady Sue Omdahl grew up living in the country, outside of Saint Paul, Minn. I was lucky to have had neighbors who owned horses, and needed an eager helping hand to exer-cise them, said Omdahl.

Lillie Bartelt was born and raised in Wausau, Wis., which is where she still calls home. As a little girl I always had an interest in horses and rodeo, and as I grew so did my passion for these things, said Lillie.

Cowboy honored as Wild West Parade grand marshal

    Lindwalls named as parade marshals

    Nap Sharkey

BRAMPTONNap Sharkey of Brampton rode in the fi rst rodeo parade and is a member of the Silver Spurs riding club. Nap is a real cowboy who has been com-ing to the area for many years. Here is how he remembers rodeo times in Iron River: Forty-seven years ago, a long time ago, the town of Iron River was booming. At rodeo time all of the windows in downtown were painted with western themes. A different club would put on a lunch each night. There would be a big bunch of cowboys staying in town for the whole rodeo. The bars would have a band, lots of dancing, and a few fi ghts among the cow-boys, too. A great time was had in Iron River. Now 47 years later, I am still having a great time. Even though a lot has changed over time, rodeo hasnt. I remember one crazy thing I did when I was younger. I bought a new saddle; it was still in the box when I got to Iron River. The morning of the parade I

    Sylvia and Ed Lindwall

IRON RIVERThe parade marshals for the 2014 edition of the U.P. Championship Rodeo have been part of the local rodeo family for many yearsright from the beginning. Ed and Sylvia Lindwall have supported the rodeo for many years, in many ways. This year they are being honored as parade marshals for the Wild West Parade. Ed Lindwall is the owner of Lindwall Motors. Weve been a supporter for decades, he said during a recent interview. Were big fans of the rodeo. Its a big thing for our community. That relationship started during the 1960s, when the U.P. Championship Rodeo fi rst was held in Iron River. Like many business people, Walter Lindwall, Eds father, got Lindwall Motors in-volved in promoting the event. Since the mid 1980s, Lindwall Motors has been a corporate sponsor of the rodeo. Back then, the dealership was at the corner of Genesee Street and M-189, and it sold Buicks, Pontiacs and GMC trucks, along with Jeeps. All through the years, the Lindwalls and the rodeo kept working together, so becoming a spon-sor was a natural. It brings a lot of activity and a lot of fun to our community every summer, Ed said. Its something people can focus on if they want to have family around or reunions. Its kind of a pivot spot right in the middle of summer. It brings a lot of people to the area, and its certainly generates business for us and many other businesses here.

took this nice new saddle out of the box and put it on my horse. Now my horse was a good horse but with a new saddle a few adjustments had to be made, which I forgot about. Not using my head, I unfastened the cinch to adjust it; but I forgot and left the back cinch on. Well, things were fi ne until someone rode by with a big costume on and my horse made a jump and the saddle went under the horse. He took off a jumping and a snorting through all of the other horses and started bucking and lots of people were falling off their horses. Finally, my horse came to a loading ramp and fell. I was able to get my new saddle off without much damage to it at all. Thank God no one was hurt; everyone just had a little pre-rodeo excite-ment. Another funny thing that I remember happen-ing was one of the girls who was running for queen came running and said that her horse was stolen. It was a good little quarter horse. We said maybe it just

got out. So a few of us saddled up and rode the back country looking for this horse. No horse was found. When we got back, she was all happy be-cause someone had moved her horse to fi x a stall that was broken, so her horse wouldnt get loose. We all had a good laugh at that! A couple of sad notes I remember: The fi rst queen was killed a couple of weeks after the ro-deo in a car accident. Another was related to one of our riding partners. We were waiting on him to show up for the parade and he never did. We found out that he had stopped to fi x a fl at and for-got to put something behind the tire and the car ran him over. That was one sad day!! In life as in rodeo, the show must go on. Remember life is what you make of it, so come for the ride and enjoy yourself. Happy Trails and see you all at the Upper Peninsula Champion-ship Rodeo!
