Established in 1850, Kualoa Ranch is a family owned andoperated 4,000 acre working cattle ranch, spread from the steepmountain cliffs to the sparkling sea. Located on the northeasternside of Oahu in the Hawaiian countryside, it is less than an hourfrom Honolulu. The ranch terrain varies from dense rainforest tobroad open valleys and from beautiful white sand beaches toawesome verdant cliff faces. It is truly a paradise for outdoorrecreation with many places accessible only by horseback, on anall terrain vehicle or by hiking. There are two major areas of theranch: the northern half of the ranch including Ka'a'awa Valleywhich contains most of the movie locations sites, and the south-ern half that includes Hakipu`u Valley, the 800 year-old Moli'i fishpond, and Secret Island. If the ranch's views lookfamiliar, that's because Kualoa Ranch has been the site of many television shows and Hollywood films such as Jurassicpark, Windtalkers, Pearl Harbor, Godzilla, Tears of the Sun and 50 First Dates. THE XTERRA WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP COURSELength 21km/13.1 milesStarting Elevation 50’Lowest point 27’Highest point 751’Total climbing approx 1,700’Trails open dirt road, dual track dirt road,

single track & sometimes no track

As described by race director “Kahuna Dave” Nicholas

The start for all three race distances is at the Kaaawa Valleybase camp. Runners leave on a hard-packed dirt road andwith a quarter-mile face their first task – a long, undulating1-mile climb.

At the 1.5-mile mark, the 5K runners will head down apasture and back towards the ocean and the finish line (seeyellow dotted line on map). The world championship 21Kand 10K runners will continue on the upper road untilheading steeply downhill, some on road, some on grasstowards the back of the valley.

A hard right and the 21K and 10K runners head to the veryback of Kaaawa Valley before turning around and connect-ing to the scenic single track.

Interesting note: this section of single track was createdyears ago for the legendary Hawaiian Mountain Tour bikeraces. It’s high pasture that dips into volcanic gulches to riseagain into the sun. You’ll do this several times before the10K heads to the finish. For the 21K world champ runners, the fun has just begun.

The second aid station for 21K and 10K is the beginning ofthe single track. The 10K runners will take a left turn downthe slope about a quarter-mile into the single track (seegreen dotted line on map) and take their own, new singletrack back to join their 5K brothers and sisters at theKaaawa Hawaiian Village.

Page 9: 2014 PRESS GUIDE - XTERRA · 2018. 2. 1. · 7 QUICK FACTS PAUL MITCHELL XTERRA TRAIL RUN WORLDS When: Sunday, December 7, 2014 @ 9 a.m. Where: Kaaawa Valley, Kualoa Ranch, Oahu,

9

Meanwhile, the 21K runners will eventually get back on dirtroads and past a cave from the move Pearl Harbor as theymove from one valley to another. After aid station 3, runnerswill head into construction for the new Kualoa TropicalGardens and onto some up-and-down single/double track. Here, runners venture deep into forest, and out on theedges with spectacular ocean overlooks and finally a dipinto a dark, tropical rain forest with three stream crossings. If it looks familiar, think about the scenes from the movieBattleship.

Just when runners might be thinking “this isn’t so bad,” theterrain starts to climb. Easy at first, and then brutally steep, and totally exposed to the sun. Just as you think it hasleveled, the lie comes true and it is up again. At last a feed

station that appears to be a dead end, but it’s not. We aretaking you up narrow single track – by narrow, we mean afoot at most – the spine that separates Hakipu’u andKaaawa valleys. You’ll wish you could stop as you can seea thousand miles of blue Pacific Ocean no matter which wayyou turn. Then the single track plunges steep downhill, where nobody goes except for the 21K runners on this day.Muddy, rutty, steep drop-offs, slimy and slippery. We’ve putropes to help you stay upright and I guarantee you will needto use them.

The good news? That steep downhill section is only about aquarter-mile. At the bottom, you’ll find the terrain familiar asyou return to the back of Kaaawa Valley and run thatgorgeous, fast and soft single track to the finish.

THE CONTENDERSPatrick Smyth from Salt Lake City, Utah enters Sunday’shalf-marathon as a clear-cut favorite to defend his worldtitle and interestingly, his toughest competitor is likely to bea very familiar foe from Layton, Utah in the form of BrettHales.

Hales won the XTERRA Trail Run National Championshipin September in dominating fashion, and it was his first-ever trail run.

“It was phenomenal, I loved it. I had no idea what toexpect having never done a trail race. It was amazing.A little wind, little rain, critters running everywhere, and

there were so many people in the race but I felt like I wasthe only one out there. It was so addicting,” said Hales, 28,after Nationals.

Smyth can relate. Since focusing his running efforts on trailraces last year Smyth quickly made a name for himself asone of the best trail runners in the U.S.

This year Smyth won the U.S. Trail Half-MarathonChampionships in Bellingham, Washington and was thetop American (10th overall) at the World Mountain RunningChampionships held in Italy in September.

Although Smyth and Hales are fairly new to the trail runscene, they know each other well having run against eachother in high school more than a decade ago and winningis nothing new for either of them. Hales, a former trackand cross country stand-out at Weber State University, haswon several half-marathons this season.

Smyth, who was a 7-time All-American across cross-country, indoor and outdoor track at Notre Dame, saidXTERRA Trail Run Worlds “is the culmination of my 2014season. I've been gearing all my recent training towardsthis race. The course at Kualoa Ranch is amongst the mostmemorable, beautiful I've ever run on, and that played abig role in my decision to come back, but more than any-thing I want to repeat as World Champ!”

Other men gunning to steal the title from Smyth include hisU.S. Mountain Running teammate David Roche, who wonhis second US 10k trail national championship in two yearsat Lauren, NC with a time of 42:42 this year. Roche alsowon the XTERRA Earth Conservancy half-marathon inMocanaqua, PA back in June.

THE CONTENDERS“We are so excited to race Worlds to experience the beau-ty of the course firsthand,” said David Roche, who will behonored alongside his wife Megan as the “Men’s andWomen’s Sub-Ultra Trail Runners of the Year” at theUSATF annual meeting on Thursday. “We have heardincredible things about the trails, the views, and the area.Plus, XTERRA always puts on fun events, mixing a low-key vibe with stellar competition and challenging courses.Basically, Worlds represents just about everything thatmakes trail running awesome!”

Also of note is Olympian Roberto Mandje, who capturedthe XTERRA Beaver Creek half-marathon over the sum-mer and was 5th at XTERRA Trail Run Worlds last year.

BEST OF THE U.S. WOMEN HEADED TO HAWAII

Allie McLaughlin (Colorado Springs, CO), Kimber Mattox(Bend, OR) and Megan Roche (Sunnyvale, CA) highlightthe women’s elite race.

McLaughlin, who won the World Mountain RunningAssociation Long Distance Challenge in August and wasthe top American and bronze medalist at the WorldMountain Running Championships in Italy in September, could be considered America’s fastest trail runner rightnow

“That I don't think I can say, but definitely work towards itevery day!” said McLaughlin, who will be making her firstappearance at XTERRA Trail Run Worlds. “I mean thereare so many trail races and so many different lengths. I amprobably most competitive in the half marathon and underbut there are a lot of women I haven't raced yet. I am def-initely up for the challenge to be considered the fastestthough!”

The recently turned 24-year-old showed signs of beinggreat after posting a remarkable freshman year running forthe University of Colorado cross country team back in2009, but was subsequently plagued with injures for years.

“A sacrum, heel, and fibula stress fractures,” she explains.“I definitely learned a lot those years though and could nothave had better coaches to support me through such adevastating time. After forgoing my fifth year and taking ayear off, I not only got a job outside of running in countryradio which excites me in a whole other way, I also found

THE CONTENDERSmy strength again back home in the springs and on thetrails! I think I've finally made it through the rebound phaseand can now move forward confidently and have neverenjoyed running more! As painful as it was, I thank God forthe broken road that led me here!”

She also said she was thankful for the opportunity to run inHawaii, in a race she had long dreamed of competing at.

“To be honest, I remember seeing ads in runningmagazines about it when I was in high school and alwaysthought in the back of my mind how awesome it would beto go,’ said McLaughlin. “There never was an ideal time todo it during those seasons, however, and I don't think myparents would have seen it necessary. Now all of a suddenit just feels right to come and my parents are meeting thereas well so it's going to be special no matter how the racegoes.”

McLaughlin and Roche were honored as the “Women’sMountain Runner of the Year” and the “Women’s Sub-UltraTrail Runner of the Year”, respectively, at the USATFMountain Ultra Trail Council Awards banquet today.

A pair of elite Canadian runners from British Columbia -Marilyn Arsenault and Melanie McQuaid – add someintrigue to the women’s race.

McQuaid is no stranger to XTERRA or Kualoa Ranch. As a professional triathlete she won XTERRA’s triathlon

world championship three-times; and well before XTERRAstarted hosting runs at Kualoa Ranch McQuaid was rippingup the trails on her mountain bike at the HawaiianMountain Tour in the valley.

This will be McQuaid’s third attempt at the half-marathon.She was 10th in her first try in 2009, and was fifth twoyears later in 2011.

Aresnault, who has won championship titles on all sur-faces, might just feel right at home in the hills of Hawaiiand to put her speed in perspective, consider that she hasrun faster than 2012 XTERRA Trail Run World ChampionLucy Smith this season.

“Marilyn is in great form and finished a minute ahead of meat Nationals last weekend and head to head, has beenfaster than me this year,” said Smith, who just pulled from

THE CONTENDERSSunday’s race due to a bad cold. “She is a solid competi-tor and massively talented, but hasn’t run the worldscourse. I am not sure of the pedigree of the two youngmountain runners, but I think Marilyn's stamina and matu-rity will serve her well at Worlds.”

Not to be overlooked is Kimber Mattox from Bend, Oregonwho was 2nd at XTERRA Nationals in Utah thisSeptember, recently won the Warrior Dash WorldChampionship, and won five All-America medals in her col-lege career that included a ninth-place finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase while running for the University ofOregon Ducks in 2012.

"After enjoying the XTERRA race in Utah, I was excited totry another," said Mattox. "I’ve heard great things about thetrails in Hawaii, so thought this was a perfect opportunity tosee them for myself."

Other contenders include XTERRA pro triathlete KimBaugh, and Hawaii’s-own Lauren Ho, who was seventhoverall at last year’s race. One women’s runner of partic-ular interest is actually still just a girl, 11-year-old KasugaWatabe from Japan. Watabe has posted remarkableresults this season, winning the women’s title at eight trailraces at distances ranging from 15-to-32 kilometers.

Of course with registration for the race still open, there’sjust no telling who might join this super-fast field.

FIT KIDS: Taylor Tamashiro, a special education teacher atManana Elementary School in Pearl City, is one of the lead-ers and coaches of the school’s Manana Fit Club.

In addition to promoting the healthy, active, outdoorslifestyle – the club also encourages participation in a com-munity events – and this they decided to focus on theXTERRA Trail Run World Championship.

“It appeals to us because it is something different being atrail run and with the two events of the 5k and 1.5 mile walk,

our students are free to participate in that event that they(we) feels best suits them,” said Tamashiro. “Most impor-tantly, they're outdoor being active. Plus, I'm from the wind-ward side and I love that area, a lot of our kids don't get tothat side of the island so it's a new experience for them aswell.”

Kids have been a big part of the XTERRA Trail experiencethrough the years, and there is even free runs for the small-er kids and an obstacle/adventure area for them to play at.“We see so many kids these days glued to their tablets andTV that it really is great to see groups and clubs like this thatpush them to be active and outdoors,” said Dave Nicholas,XTERRA’s managing director. “It’s a step in the right direc-tion, for sure, and we’re proud of Taylor and the kids atManana for getting involved.”

The Manana Fit Club – comprised of 3rd and 4th grade stu-dents - started a training program (twice a week) in mid-September that involves a combination of cardio, full bodyworkouts, and team sports.

“Our students are stoked to be a part of this,” saidTamashiro. “Since we announced this, we coaches getasked every day about practice as well as "when is ourrun/walk?" The students that we have running the 5k areexcited to get out there and run!”

TEAM 2 END AIDS: Or T2 for short – is an endurance eventtraining program based in Southern California that benefitsAIDS Project Los Angeles. In 2012 T2 brought 25 runners tothe XTERRA Trail Run World Championship, and theyraised $99,000 from that race alone, last year they did evenbetter and this year they’ve already collected more than$100,000.

“When we decided to mix things up a bit in 2012 and addour first trail race with XTERRA, people really liked the idea, but I'm not sure they understood what made trail racesdifferent than other races,” said Kerry Quakenbush, theDirector of Endurance Events for T2. “After the XTERRArace in 2012, people started sending back photos and feed-back on their wonderful experience with XTERRA at KualoaRanch. That's when word got around on social media sitesand new people wanted to give trail running a try. The trip toOahu for this race is awesome. You get the best of thetourist parts of the island (Waikiki, etc.) and you get the gor-geous scenery of the North Shore.”

XTERRA TRAIL RUNNING SERIES OVERVIEW

Trails of all shapes and sizes can be found around theworld. Runners of all shapes and sizes can be found aroundthe globe, too.

The combination of those two is really what the XTERRATrail Run Series is all about. If there’s a trail out there, we’lltry to find it. And then we’ll invite any and all runners tocome out and join our races.

XTERRA Trail Runs started as a side event for theXTERRA off-road triathlons, but it is now clear that the trailruns have carved their own niche in the endurance sportsworld. During the 2013-14 season, the XTERRA Trail RunSeries featured more than 100 races around the world, ranging in distance from 5 kilometers to a full-marathon 42kilometers.

Seventeen regions across the United States hosted anXTERRA Trail Run Series in 2013: Alabama, Arizona,Atlantic, Southern California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia,Hawaii, North Carolina, Pocono, Puerto Rico, SouthCarolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia and Washington. There were also XTERRA races in Arkansas, Oregon,Nevada and Iowa. National champions were crowned at theXTERRA Trail Run National Championship at SnowbasinResort near Ogden, Utah, in September.

There were also international XTERRA Trail Run races inBrazil, Canada, Japan, Mexico, South Africa, Philippines,New Zealand, and parts of Europe.

In effect, all of those races lead up to the XTERRA Trail RunWorld Championship at Kualoa Ranch. Technically, there isno qualifying process to enter the XTERRA Trail Run WorldChampionship, so runners of all ages and skill levels, fromanywhere in the world, can enter the event.

The XTERRA Trail Run World Championship was created in2008, and it has become one of the largest and mostsignificant events in the ever-growing sport of trail running.Olympic runners and triathletes, elite marathon runners andinternational champions have all made their way to KualoaRanch for the event in recent years. It now draws more than2,000 runners annually, with more than 20 countries and 40states represented.

The elite runners compete for $10,000 in prize money atKualoa Ranch, while the age-group runners compete for

medals, prizes, and the prestige of being called anXTERRA Trail Run World Champion.

In keeping with the XTERRA spirit, the XTERRA Trail RunWorld Championship includes trails for the less-competitiveand less-experienced runners. In addition to the 21Kchampionship course, there are separate 10K and 5Kraces, and there’s even an “Adventure Walk” for those whojust want to take a leisurely stroll around the park.

Of course, there is also the allure of Hawaii and KualoaRanch in particular. Located on the northeast coast of theisland of Oahu, the sights at Kualoa Ranch are nothingshort of spectacular. The 4,000-acre working cattle ranchoffers arguably the most stunning natural landscape on theisland. The scenic backdrop has been used as a filming sitefor such major movie productions as Jurassic Park,Godzilla, Pearl Harbor and 50 First Dates.

“I’m surprised,” King said. “I knew there was goodcompetition, and to be honest, I wasn’t feeling 100 percent. So at the start, there were three of us and we kind of brokeaway, and I was surprised that more guys weren’t therewith us. Then about halfway, I kind of broke away againand was really surprised to finish here that far ahead.”

King said he was suffering from a cold and a sore Achilles.“I don’t know what it is about this race,” he said. “Maybe it’sbecause of the time of year and the travel, but I never seemto come here fully healthy, so I’m just happy to win it again.”

The Trail Run World Championship at Kualoa Ranch wascreated in 2008, and King has won it every year.

KING REIGNS OVER FIELD AT XTERRA WORLDS AGAIN

MEYERHOFF TAKES WOMEN’S TITLE IN FIRST TRY

Dec. 5, 2010 – Max King (pictured) found the perfect curefor a sickness – win the XTERRA Trail Run WorldChampionship.

Despite running with flu-like symptoms, King won theXTERRA Trail Run World Championship for the thirdconsecutive year at Kualoa Ranch. King, who is from Bend,Oregon, completed the 12.9 mile course in 1 hour, 16minutes, 36 seconds.

“I didn’t even know if I was going to make it to the race thismorning, let alone win,” said King, 30. “I had a headache,my fever was going down, but I still felt terrible. But when Igot here and started running on the course, I was surprisedthat I felt a lot better than I thought I would. I guess after allthese years, running makes me feel pretty normal.”

When it comes to running XTERRA Trail RunChampionship races, King is beyond normal. He is now 6-0 in the last six major XTERRA trail run races – threeconsecutive victories in the national championship race, and now three consecutive wins in the world championshiprace.

In the women’s race, Sally Meyerhoff of Arizona took thevictory in her first try at the XTERRA Trail Run WorldChampionship.

Meyerhoff normally enters road races (she is the Americanrecord holder for a 10-mile road race), but she proved herworth on the tricky trails of Kualoa Ranch. She completedthe course in a women’s record time of 1:28:58, which wasgood for ninth place overall, and nearly eight minutesahead of the next female.

“I don’t do a ton of trail running, but I do marathons andhalf-marathons and I train really hard at the professionallevel,” said Meyerhoff, 26. “But this race tested me like I’venever been tested before.”

Indeed, Meyerhoff collapsed after crossing the finish lineand needed medical attention. She was eventually fineafter receiving intravenous fluids.

King and Meyerhoff each received $2,000.

HOW XTERRA GOT STARTEDIT REALLY STARTED in the late '80's. That's when Tom

Kiely (CEO of TEAM Unlimited - owners and producers of

XTERRA) was tasked with creating more publicity for the

Waikiki Oahu Visitors Association. His idea was sports TV.

"First, sports is part of our life blood in Hawaii, and second,

what looks good on TV? The beaches and the ocean,"

explained Kiely.

The concept was pretty simple. TV sports and

entertainment is one of the biggest industries in the world.

The travel industry is THE BIGGEST industry in the world.

Bring those two together in programming, and you've got

something big.

So he came up with the idea for the Hawaiian International

Ocean Challenge - a lifeguard skills competition that

attracted water safety specialists from Australia, New

Zealand, California, and of course, Hawaii.

Then, he forged a relationship with ESPN - the worldwide

leader in sports.

In 1990 the Ocean Challenge was broadcast on ESPN,

and millions of viewers were exposed to the beauty of

Waikiki - the sun, sand, and crystal clear blue water of the

Pacific Ocean. Subsequently, this is where David "Kahuna"

Nicholas enters the picture - as "race director."

"So we get into producing the Ocean Challenge," says

Kiely. "And now I'm thinking I've got all these athletes and

TV crews and if it costs me this much to produce one show,

it'll cost less for another, and even less for a third."

ESPN approves two more shows (Waikiki King's Race and

Diamond Head Wahine Windsurfing Classic) and in 1991

TEAM Unlimited produces three events and three TV

shows. The concept is working, and Hawaii is reaping the

benefits of the outdoor exposure the shows are generating.

"So the next year (1992) we produced seven Hawaiian

Sports Adventure Showsmultiple segments, different

stories, great scenics, and 30-minutes of entertaining, good

fun stuff," said Kiely.

Those seven shows were in addition to the Ocean

Challenge and a few others televised events, including the

inaugural Tour O' Hawaii.

"Now that was a great event," said Nicholas - now the

managing director of the XTERRA Global Tour. "The Tour

O' Hawaii happened before professional cyclists were

allowed to compete in the Olympics so the top riders from

every country kept their amateur status so they could race

in the Olympics. We just missed Lance because he signed

with Motorola, but we had George Hincapie, Jan Ulrich,

Tyler Hamilton, and dozens of others. Looking back, the

field was a who's who of international cycling."

A few years later the Olympics allowed pros to compete,

road cycling in the U.S. was on the decline, and the Tour O'

Hawaii was no more. At the same time, however, mountain

biking was taking off. So in 1995, in addition to 12 other TV

shows and several events, TEAM Unlimited produced the

Hawaiian Mountain Tour.

In doing so Nicholas and mountain bike Hall-of-Famer

Dean Crandall established the rules and held the first-ever

mountain bike stage race. This is also where many of the

XTERRA greats first appeared. The likes of Ned Overend,

Shari Kain, Melanie McQuaid, Steve Larsen, Mike Kloser,

Leslie Tomlinson, and host of others were taking part in the

Hawaiian Mountain Tour. Now these races took place at

Kualoa Ranch on Oahu, where the Koolau mountain range

meets the ocean, and the story goes that after their races

the mountain bikers would ride down to the beach and jump

in the water. It sparked a thoughtwhy not have a

mountain bike triathlon?

By 1996 TEAM Unlimited had produced more than 50

shows and sporting events, and while the idea of an off-road

triathlon was enticing - who'd pay for it?

Almost simultaneously, the Aston Hotel in Maui (now the

Wailea Marriott Resort) was shopping for a good idea for

their grand opening and the Maui Visitors Bureau was

looking for a new event that could tell a different story about

Maui's south shore because all the exposure up to that point

was golf. Well, what better way to show off the hotel and

south shore than 1) starting the race at this beautiful beach

in front of the sponsor hotel, 2) follow a race that covers 21

miles of terrain with two dozen camera's, and 3) put it on TV

for the whole world to see?

Add a phone call to Kiely from a friendly competitor in the

marketplace (to remain unnamed) inquiring on the very

subject of producing an off-road triathlon and you have all

the main ingredients for XTERRA's birth.

Kiely likes to define luck as the "intersection of

opportunity and activity." He recalls bringing Nicholas and

VP of Marketing Janet Clark into his office.

"Look, I said, so-and-so called me and said that they were

thinking about doing an off-road tri and if they do, then we're

forever second, so we have to be the first ones to do it. I

immediately called Aston and the MVB and said O.K., I've

got the idea, here's the thing, bing, bang, boom," said Kiely.

"And that's what got us started in XTERRA."
