She passed Kendra Eitniear’s 21 goal, 2011 season today. Chris-tian’s assist was her fifth of the season.

Erika Brinkman (Kalida/Clover-dale, Ohio) made a couple tremen-dous saves down the stretch to keep the Express in it.

Darton State’s Lyana Perez, who is one of the nation’s leading scorers with 38 goals, was held to just one, late shot on goal by the Express defense.

The Express (17-3) had their

15-match win streak snapped to-day with the loss, while Darton State (21-1) improved their winning streak to 13.

Furthermore, the Express will take on No. 5 Butler Community College tomorrow at 4 p.m. in an effort to

stay alive in pool play. Butler has won 14 straight matches and are 21-2 overall.

Should the Express win tomorrow, they will wait and see the result of the Darton vs Butler match on Wednesday.

Melbourne, Fla.---The No. 13 Ex-press women’s soccer team saw a familiar scenario play out in the second game of pool play at the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) D-I National Tournament against No. 5 Butler (KS) Community College today.

However, this one ended with the Express getting the victory in pen-alty kicks.

Jessica Grindle (Northwood/North-wood, Ohio) scored on a corner from Jill Burkholder (Bryan/Bryan, Ohio) with just under four minutes remaining in the first half to give the Express a 1-0 lead.

In that half, the Express held But-ler without a shot on goal, and it marked the first time all season Butler had that happen to them. In fact, Butler’s Morgan Foster came into the came leading the nation in goals scored with 43. She was held without a goal until the penalty kick session.

In the second half, Butler’s Brittney Lawrence found the net for her team in the game’s 53rd minute to tie it up.

Following that, each team had their chances. Butler had two late corners, but was stuffed both times. Additionally, Express goal-keeper Erika Brinkman (Kalida/Cloverdale, Ohio) made several nice saves down the stretch to send her team to PKs for the sec-ond straight game.

This time, however, the Express came out on top to stay alive in their hopes of advancing to the NJ-CAA D-I Final Four.

Foster scored to put Butler up 1-0 before Kendyl Christian (Clay/Or-egon, Ohio) answered right back to open the extra session. That’s when Brinkman dove to her left and saved a shot by Lawrence to give the Express a chance to take the lead. Grindle, however, was

also stopped in the second set of PKs and it remained tie at one.

Following that, Burkholder and Hal-ey Kreger (Bedford/Bedford Town-ship, Mich) scored for the Express, while Butler’s Maddie Decker and Paige Thompson scored - sending it to the fifth round of PKs.

Butler’s Korrie Rainey then at-tempted to go top middle, but banged it off the crossbar to set up Elizabeth Theaker (Maumee/Maumee, Ohio), who sent the ball into the top left corner of the net to gave the No. 13 Express their first national tournament win in pro-gram history.

“Walking up there wasn’t like any-thing was different than it was yes-terday,” Theaker said.”I just kind of did the same thing except for the shot. I knew that they watched us take those PKs yesterday. She jumped left, I kicked right, well, my left.”

Grindle’s goal was her 23rd this season, and it was her 29th career goal. It was her fourth goal of the postseason and her second in the national tournament.

Burkholder’s assist was her eighth of the season. On the other side, Butler’s Lawrence scored her 28th goal of the season.

With the win, the Express are now 18-3 this year, while Butler falls to 21-3.

“These girls have been the same way all year long,” said Express women’s soccer head coach Mary Whisler. “They never give up. They never have, they never will. I couldn’t ask for a better group. It’s a great feeling to be here and to show that we belong.”

Tiebreaker Scenarios

With the penalty kick session win, the Express are 0-0-2 in the tour-nament, but have secured three points (two for today’s penalty kick win and one for yesterday’s pen-alty kick loss).

The other two teams in their pool, Butler (0-0-1, one point) and Darton State (0-0-1, two points) will play at 4 p.m. tomorrow.

The Express need Butler to win in penalty kicks to create a tiebreak-er situation.

Any regulation outcome in either team’s favor tomorrow eliminates the Express, while a Darton pen-alty kick win would give them four points and advance them.

Should Darton and Butler tie 1-1 in regulation with Butler winning

in PKs, it would create a virtual three-way tie. There would then be games played on Thursday be-tween all three teams.

The games would consist of two 10 minute overtime sessions fol-lowed by a penalty kick session if necessary.

One team, via coin flip, would re-ceive a bye, while the other two would play first. The winner of that plays the team that got the bye for the right to move on.

Should Butler and Darton tie 2-2, 3-3, 4-4, etc. in regulation and But-ler wins, the Express will advance due to have only given up two goals in regulation.

The winner of the pool advances to the NJCAA D-I Final Four this week-end.

Notes

No. 5 Butler had gone 12 straight games with at least three or more goals this season. The Express held them to one goal for only the third time this season.

In the penalty kick session, the player that scored for each team in regulation (Grindle, Owens and Lawrence, Butler) were both stopped in their shot attempts.

Melbourne, Fla.---No. 4 Darton State College ended the national title hopes of the No. 13 Express women’s soccer team with a 3-1 penalty kick victory in the National Junior College Athletic Associa-tion (NJCAA) D-I National Tourna-ment today.

The Express, Darton State and No. 5 Butler had all tied after their three pool play matches. In order to de-cide who moves on to the NJCAA D-I Final Four, a one-day playoff was necessary.

While Butler won a coin flip and earned a bye, the Express and Dar-ton State played two scoreless 10 minute periods before penalty kicks decided it.

Jessica Grindle (Northwood/Northwood, Ohio) seemed to have the best shot to score for either team early in the first

overtime session, but failed to convert in front of the net.

Kendyl Christian (Clay/Oregon, Ohio) opened the penalty kick ses-sion for the Express, but she was wide on her shot. After Darton’s first attempt was good, Grindle had her shot saved. Darton proceded to go up 2-0 following Grindle’s miss.

The Express gained one shot back in the third round when Jill Burk-holder (Bryan/Bryan, Ohio) made her shot, while Darton’s shot sailed high. Haley Kreger’s (Bed-ford/Bedford Township, Mich.) fourth round shot for the Express, however, sailed high and Darton clinched the victory with a goal on their next kick.

It was the second time the Express has been defeated in penalty kicks by Darton in the tournament. Fol-lowing their win over the Express,

Darton ended up losing to Butler in the finals and Butler advanced to the NJCAA D-I Final Four.Today’s mini-game does not count in the standings for either team.

Today’s one-day playoff was a first in NJCAA D-I soccer national tour-nament history - men’s or wom-en’s.

Toledo, Ohio---The No. 13 Express women’s soccer team has re-turned home following their run in the National Junior College Athlet-ic Association (NJCAA) D-I national tournament, but brought some awards with them.

Sophomore forward Jessica Grin-dle, who scored two goals in her team’s two national tournament games, was named to the NJCAA D-I All-National Tournament team. She is the first soccer player, men’s or

women’s, in the history of Owens to achieve that honor.

Grindle had 23 goals and five as-sists in her final season with the Express. Additionally, she totaled 29 goals and eight assists over 31 games in her two-year career. She only played in 10 games her fresh-man year due to injury.

Meanwhile, the Express women’s soccer team took home the NJ-CAA’s Lea Plarski Sportsmanship

Award, which is given to the team in the national tournament that ex-hibits the best sportsmanship.

The Express women’s soccer team finished 17-2-2 this year, while proving to be one of the best teams in the nation. Their two penalty kick games in the national tour-nament counted as ties, although they split those two games in PKs. During the season, the Express

won 15 straight games after start-ing 2-2, and they captured the pro-gram’s first Region XII tournament championship.

Stay tuned to OwensExpress.com for offseason updates on which four-year schools Grindle and other players choose to attend, as well as updates on who the Ex-press will sign for next year.

Melbourne, Fla.---Entering today, the No. 13 Express women’s soccer team needed a lot of help to stay alive in the National Junior College Athletic Associa-tion (NJCAA) D-I National Tournament, and they got it.

The Express needed No. 5 Butler Community College (KS) to tie No. 4 Darton State College (GA) in regulation

and win in penalty kicks. Not only did they need that, they needed each team to score at least one goal in regulation. Both of those things happened as Butler and Darton tied 1-1 in regu-lation with Butler winning 4-3 in penalty kicks.

The first tie breaker was goals against in regula-tion, with the second being goal differential in regu-

lation. Each of the three games between the two teams ended in 1-1 ties with each team picking up a win in the penalty kick phase, while each team also picked up a loss in the penalty kick phase.

The Express will now take on Darton State at 1 p.m. tomorrow. Via a coin toss,

Butler received a bye in the playoff and will play the winner of Owens-Darton following the conclusion of the first match.

The format of each game will be two, 10 minute sudden death periods fol-lowed by a penalty kick round if necessary.

Owens, Butler and Dar-ton are competing for the right to go to the NJCAA D-I Women’s Soccer National Tournament Final Four this weekend. The winner of to-morrow’s playoff advances to those semifinals. The one-day playoff is a first for NJCAA D-I national tourna-ment play in soccer - men’s or women’s.

Toledo, Ohio---The Express wom-en’s soccer team worked with United Way to provide Christmas gifts for a local family this past weekend.

For the second straight year, the Express players and coaches took part in the United Way of Toledo’s Adopt a Family program, where the team provides Christmas to a fam-ily in need. The family puts togeth-er a list of needs and wants ahead of time.

“Our goal is to make sure they get everything they need and almost everything they want,” said Ex-press women’s soccer head coach Mary Whisler.

It was Whisler who contacted the local United Way last year to see how the team could help.

“Receiving a gift on Christmas is special,” Whisler said. “Giving an

entire family a Christmas is truly one of the best gifts of all. I have a very special group of girls. Their huge hearts showed on the field and also with this project. It’s a re-ally good feeling.”

Whisler highly recommends this project for anyone who is looking for a way to give back.

The Express women’s soccer team recently completed their best sea-son (17-2-2) in program history. The team achieved the program’s highest National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) D-I ranking, No. 13, during the season, while also winning 15 straight games en route to the program’s first Region XII tournament cham-pionship and appearance in the NJCAA D-I National Tournament.

While at nationals, the Express finished 0-0-2 before falling in a one-day tiebreaker. They won the

NJCAA’s Lea Plarski Sportsman-ship Award for exhibiting the best

sportsmanship of any team at the national tournament, as well.

Toledo, Ohio---Erika Brinkman, the starting goalkeeper for the Ow-ens Community College women’s soccer team the past two years, has signed with Purdue University Calumet.

The Kalida High School product helped lead the Owens women’s soccer program to the first Region XII tournament championship in program history last year. Dur-ing the season, she started 19 of 21 games and made 48 saves. In those starts, she allowed only 18 goals and tallied a season-high five saves on four occasions - in-cluding each of the final three matches of the postseason. She also posted six shutouts as the team finished 17-2-2 and won a program record 15 straight games.

Brinkman closed her two-year ca-reer with 29 goals allowed and 121 saves. She had 14 career shutouts,

including back-to-back shutouts in the Region XII tournament her sophomore year, which helped her earn all-tournament honors.

As a freshman, Brinkman made 17 starts, made 73 saves and allowed 11 goals. On Oct. 17, she was named the National Junior College Ath-letic Association (NJCAA) Division I Goalkeeper of the Week.

In her two seasons, Brinkman and the Owens women’s soccer program went 30-4-5, captured a Region XII regular season champi-onship (2012), a Region XII tourna-ment championship and advanced to the program’s first NJCAA Divi-sion I National Tournament.

Purdue University Calumet fin-ished 3-13-1 overall last year, which was the second year of the program’s history. The team, led by head coach Leslie Ferguson, com-

petes at the NAIA level.

Brinkman becomes the third Ow-ens women’s soccer player from last year’s team to sign with a four-
