The 2013 Owens Community College softball team overcame the loss of several players to advance into the Region XII District G championship game before falling to Kalamazoo Valley Community College.
The Express, who finished 24-17, had several players play in uncomfortable po-sitions last year, although many of them excelled. Several times, the Express played with three natural first baseman and an out-fielder in their four infield spots as Ka-tie Butler played third, Emily Rockman played short, Tyniesha Wilson played sec-ond base and Molly Gast played first.
In the circle, the Express lost one of their top two starters, Jolene Sauter, early in the season. That forced the bulk of the workload on freshmen, Katie Turski and Gast.
Turski was, perhaps, the biggest key to the success that the team had. She fin-ished 20-10 overall with a 4.15 ERA. In postseason play, she pitched 31 of 33 in-nings over five games in three days. On the second day, she went 3-0 with 19 innings pitched and only two runs allowed. In those three games, she tossed two shut-outs. Overall, Turski pitched 197 of the teams 270 innings. Aside from her, Gast (2-2, 40. 1 IP, 4.18 ERA), Amanda Sinay (0-2, 5.1 IP, 13.70 ERA) and April DeCant (0-1, 14.1 IP, 1.48 ERA) chipped in after Sauter left with 13 IP. Sinay and DeCant, both sophomores, had never pitched in college prior.
Offensively, the sophomore speed duo of Mareshah Scott (.433) and Melanie Ia-coangeli (.433) each hit over .430 and combined for 73 steals in 79 attempts. Another sophomore, Jaylee Glad, hit .405, while Rockman blasted her way to a .401 average and team-highs of five home runs, 17 doubles and 37 RBIs.
Sophomore Olivia Reeder, another vital key to last years success, started all 41 games while hitting .318 with 36 RBIs.
Wilson, who came from the outfield to play second base, hit .394 as a freshman.
As a team, the Express finished one game back of first place Cuyahoga C.C., who ended the five year title streak by the Ex-press.
In the district tournament, the Express dropped their opener to Grand Rapids, but defeated Muskegon, Grand Rapids and Lansing to win the losers bracket on the second day. That set up a champion-ship tilt against KVCC, who defeated the Express 8-1 with eight unanswered runs.
Turski, Rockman and Reeder were each named to the all-tournament team, while Turski and Iacoangeli won the OCCAC pitcher and player of the year awards, re-spectively. Scott, Reeder and Rockman were also named All-OCCAC. Iacoangeli and Scott were All-Region XII, too.
Following the season, three players signed with NCAA D-I schools and one signed with an NCAA D-II school. Reeder and Scott went to the Univ. of Toledo, Turski went to BGSU and Wilson went to Ken-tucky State.

Head Coach - 11th SeasonDUANE LANHAM
Duane Lanham is in his 11th season as head coach of the Express softball program.
Last season, Lanham guided the Ex-press to a 24-17 record overall. The team finished second in the OCCAC and reached the Region XII District G tournament championship before falling to Kalamazoo Valley.
Academically, the team had a 3.31 GPA. In doing so, they had eight play-ers selected to the All-OCCAC Aca-demic Team and four players who earned NJCAA academic honors.
In 2012, Lanham coached the Ex-press to the 11th OCCAC champion-

One of the best hitters and pitchers in Express softball
history
OWENS EXPRESS SOFTBALL

-
The Owens Community Col-lege softball program has thrived for 15 seasons, captur-ing 11 conference champion-ships and two regional cham-pionships, while making two appearances in the national tournament. The two national tourna-ment teams have one thing in common - they each won a program record 44 games. In 2005, the team finished fifth at nationals, while the 2011 team advanced all the way to the national championship game before falling to No. 1 LSU-Eunice. It was the best national finish of any Owens womens sports program ever.
In all, the Express softball program has only had two losing seasons while averag-ing 31 wins per season.
In the spring of 1998, for-mer athletic director Mi-chael Rickard pulled dou-ble duty and was the coach of the club softball team at Owens. The following sea-son, Mickey Arquette took over as head coach in the first official season of the program.
The team only won 17 games in their first year, but im-proved in wins each of the next four seasons before Arquette left. In her time, she won four
straight Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) titles, although she couldnt get the team to na-tionals.
Enter Duane Lanham, who took over in 2004. After lead-ing the team to a 28-9 record in his first year, Lanham led the Express to a 44-12 record in 2005.
Along the way, the team cap-tured the OCCAC champion-ship for the fifth time, the re-gional championship for the first time and made their first trip to the national tourna-ment.
That team featured two really good pitchers in sophomore
April Nietrzeba and Kelli Short, as well as a solid mix of offensive players, includ-ing sophomore catcher Tracy Lehman. Freshmen Cortney Simmons, Lindsay Guinn, Ky-lie Zweifel and Short all hit over .300, with Short leading the way at .472.
In 2011, the Express got three key transfers in Kristen Ro-znoski, Alaina Haubert and Jordan Ratliff.
Roznoski would leadoff and play enter, while leading the team with a .509 average and 42 steals. Meanwhile, Ratliff anchored the pitching staff with a 19-3 record, a 1.88 ERA and 101 strikeouts.
Alaina Haubert, who hit in the heart of the order and played third base, hit .487 and had a team-high 51 RBIs.
That year may have also fea-tured the deepest pitching staff in program history with freshmen Ashlyn Michalak and Kasey Graham, in addi-tion to sophomores Elizabeth Weber and Courtney Parr. Michalak threw a complete game to get the win in the na-tional semifinal, Weber had some very important innings in postseason play and Gra-ham finished 18-1 in her two-year career.
Offensively, the Express had five players hit at least .400,
while totaling a program re-cord .405 team batting av-erage. Those five included: Roznoski, Haubert, Allison Hausch (.448), Ashleigh Whitacre (.409) and Lindsey Bandeen (.403).
The 2011 team started 33-0 (a program record) and won the programs 10th OCCAC championship. They captured a thrilling Region XII tourna-ment and captured one of the most thrilling wins in program history with an extra inning, national touranment win over South Mountain.
Could the 2014 team achieve history? The team needs 35 wins to reach 500 as a pro-gram.
