Dear Parents/Carers,

I have pleasure in introducing this Options Booklet thatprovides such a detailed picture of the wide range ofopportunities that exist for students in Year 10 fromSeptember 2014.

North Chadderton offers one of the widest ranges oftraditional and vocational courses in the North West, andallows every student to work on a pathway that is linked totheir ability. This gives them the best possible chance ofsuccess at the end of Year 11.

Choosing the best available courses for your son ordaughter is extremely important and will involve major andoften difficult decisions. The Key Stage 4 curriculumprovides the corner stones of the core curriculum; English,Maths, Science, Physical Education and Citizenship alongwith wide and varied option choices for your son or daugh-ter to select from. You are therefore advised to seek asmuch help and guidance as possible. Senior Leadership,your son or daughter’s Form Tutor, Subject Teachers andConnexions staff are all available to help you in any waythey can, to make sure that your child makes the decisionsthat will maximise their chance of success and allow themto achieve at the highest level possible for their ability.

Ultimately, it is really important to pick a range of subjectsthat will provide the maximum amount of success, andalso, which your son or daughter enjoys.

I trust that this Options Booklet will give you the necessaryinformation and be helpful to you. I look forward tomeeting you in the near future at the Year 9 OptionsEvening on Tuesday 25th February, 2014. Details of thisEvening have already been sent to parents of Year 9students.

The time has arrived to start making some decisions about yournext two years at North Chadderton School and the GCSE coursesthat you wish to study. You are required to take certain subjectsbut this is your opportunity to choose to study others that interestyou and will help you in the future.

The following information in this booklet will allow you to makeinformed decisions. Remember to follow the instructions carefullyand take your time over the decisions you make. Most importantly,ask questions and remember this is your future you are decidingupon.

Curriculum Leaders have each written an outline of the optionchoice they are offering next year. This will help you to have aclearer view of what is involved in the two-year course. Thesepages will also help to answer some of the questions you mayalready have.

Your choices in Year 10 may affect your future career, so thinkcarefully. If you already know what you would like to do when youleave school, ask about suitable subject choices that will help youget to where you want to be.

A Broad and Balanced CurriculumNorth Chadderton School ensures that all pupils undertake a broad andbalanced curriculum. This means that, in addition to the pupils’ optionchoices, there are several compulsory subjects.

These form the basis of the core curriculum for all pupils and include :

● English Language

● Mathematics

● Science - Leading to at least two qualifications for most pupils

Some pupils will also study English Literature and Statistics.

Single Linear GCSE Mathematics: This is the linear course whichis examined in year 11 with 2 papers, one calculator and one noncalculator. There are 4 elements of mathematics which are taughtand examined are:-* Number and Algebra* Geometry and Measure* Statistics and Probability* Applied Mathematics and Functional Skills (Using and ApplyingMaths)

This subject is a compulsory subject which is studied over the 2years of Key Stage 4. All pupils take this subject.

All students in KS4 follow the Edexcel GCSE Mathematics courseand this will begin at the start of Year 10. There are two tiers ofentry for the final exam — Foundation (grades C to G) and Higher(grades A* to D) - and students will be placed in the tier mostappropriate to their ability based on their performance during Years9 and 10.

There is a strong emphasis on problem solving and in order to besuccessful on the course, students will have to demonstrate thatthey can select and use the appropriate mathematical methodsneeded in a range of situations. There are also likely to be morequestions based on using mathematics to solve real-life‘ problemsin order to improve their functional skills.

Mathematics is a core subject which gives pupils a greaterunderstanding of the world in which they live. Mathematics is usefulto pupils pursuing a wide range of careers, from accounting,computing, engineering to nursing and business. Mathematics is abenefit when studying most subjects at A-Level, including,Psychology, Sciences, Business Studies and Geography as itallows pupils to understand and interpret results.

Your work will build on that of KS3 Reading, Writing and Speakingand Listening. These are linked in order to show how languageworks. This applies to your own oral and written work as well as tounderstanding the writing or speech of others. In addition, you willhave the opportunity to enjoy a variety of fiction and non-fiction texts.

As English is a compulsory part of the core curriculum which willsupport your progress in other subjects, all students must studyeither English Language or English for GCSE.

Pupils who study English Language also study for a GCSE inEnglish Literature.

Students will study towards achieving 3 separate GCSE’s in Chem-istry, Physics and BiologyBiologyThe Nervous System, Environment, Homeostasis, Genetics, TheHeart, Kidneys, Transport in plants and animals.ChemistryThe Atomic Structure, Useful materials from rocks and oil, Rates ofReactions, Acids and bases, Water Chemistry, Development of theperiodic table.PhysicsElectromagnetic Spectrum, Waves, Forces and Motion, Electricity,Radioactivity, Optics, Electromagnets and transformers.

This subject is the perfect preparation for A Level Sciences and willprepare you well to go on to study science in the future and topursue a scientific career. This is a highly sought after qualificationby employers.

Application can be made on the form given out on theevening (copies are also on the website) and returned toReception. The last day to complete and hand in yourchoices form is Wednesday 12th March.

Take time to consider all of the options. We do not allocate places based onfirst come first served, so there is no need to rush.

Pupils handing in forms after the deadline however, may find their firstchoices are full.

No news is good news. When the forms are collated the school will thenstart to process them and you will receive a letter towards the end of theacademic year confirming your Year 10 options. Our aim is to give you thesubject choices you want.

Please be patient. This is a very slow process and it will be some time beforewe are able to confirm your options. Generally we confirm these in the lasttwo weeks of the Summer Term.

Where possible we will try to ensure that every pupil receives his or her firstchoice. However, on rare occasions this may not be possible and then youwill be offered your reserve choices.

If there are any issues with your choices, you will be contacted at the earliestopportunity.

Alongside the Core Curriculum and three option subjects, pupils will alsospend time on subjects that broaden their knowledge, skills andunderstanding and develop them as healthy individuals.

Non-Examined SubjectsPupils will spend some of their time in their form group covering topics thatare part of the SMSC (Social, Moral, Spiritual & Cultural) Curriculum. Theywill also have time devoted to development of Literacy and Numeracyskills, which will help them with their studies as well as in later life.

Examined SubjectsAll pupils will have Core PE on their timetable. This is a course that canlead to a recognised BTEC qualification at the end of Year 11.

The English Baccalaureate (EBacc) was recently introduced by theGovernment. It is an additional measure that recognises a pupil hasstudied a specific range of courses and has attained a minimum grade Cin each of these.

The combination of subjects pupils must study at GCSE to attain theEBacc are:

● English Language

● Mathematics

● Core Science AND either Additional or Triple Science

● French

● Geography OR History

North Chadderton has always ensured that its curriculum has breadth,depth and balance, so its pupils are able to select from a wide range ofGCSE’s as well as having several core subjects that they must study.

If you wish to attain the EBacc, it is essential on your options form that youhave selected the appropriate combination of subjects as shown above.

But remember, you MUST attain a minimum of a C grade in ALL of thesesubjects to be awarded the final EBacc.

In GCSE Art and Design you will study one or more of the following:· Ceramics· Sculpture· Jewellery/body adornment· Product design

Choose Three-Dimensional Design if you would like to workpractically with 3D materials, continue to explore a range of themes,learn about the artwork of others and how it relates to the way welive. You will have the opportunity to create larger, more personal3D outcomes yourself, working towards a GCSE examination in thesummer term of the second year of the course.

This course is 60% coursework and 40% exam. Both are assessedinternally and the externally moderated.

You need to enjoy art to take this subject. Good drawing andcreative thinking skills are helpful, but definitely not essential asthey can be taught. All you need is a willingness to learn and adesire to succeed.

With a grade C+ GCSE Three-Dimensional design, you couldchoose to go on to an A Level Art or BTEC course, which wouldthen lead to an Art Foundation course and a range of creative artand design degree courses. Many of our students have gone on towork in creative and enterprising areas of art design, such asArchitecture, graphic design, fashion design, 3D design, theatredesign, costume design, exhibition design, product design, jewellerydesign, interior design/decoration environmental/garden design, filmand television design.

This course introduces students to issues concerning the setting upand operation of a business. It explores the activities of businessand the reasons for success or failure.Unit 1—Setting up a Small BusinessThis unit introduces students to the issues involved with starting abusiness and covers the following topic areas: Starting a Business,Marketing, Finance, People in Business and OperationsManagement.Unit 2—Growing as a BusinessUnit 2 considers how the methods of expansion and objectives oflarger businesses might differ from smaller businesses.Unit 3— Investigating BusinessesThis unit requires students to undertake a business investigationfollowing pre-released business material from the examinationboard.

This course will enable students to gain an understanding of thedynamics of business activity, which is relevant to everyoneentering the working environment. Students will develop analyticaland evaluative skills and will be encouraged to apply theirknowledge and critical understanding to current issues andproblems in a wide range of contexts.

This is a Level 2 course equivalent to 1 GCSE.It provides a sound basis for students to progress to furtherqualifications including Level 3 Business courses. These couldinclude AS Level Business Studies, AS Level Applied BusinessStudies, AS Level Accountancy, AS Level Economics and other ALevel courses.

Drama is an exciting practical subject. You develop the ability to workas part of a team, communicate effectively, make decisions and buildyour confidence.You will be exploring and learning about different rehearsaltechniques, theatre genre, plays and theatre practitioners.

This subject allows you to express your own ideas and create yourown work as well as interpret the work of others. The content of thisspecification enables a smooth transition to ‘A’ Level GCE inDrama and Theatre Studies or Performing Arts.

You will produce and perform two pieces; one scripted and onedevised piece. You are assessed on your ability to work well withina group, as well as on your final performances. This is 60% of yourfinal mark, and will be assessed in Year 11. You will also sit a oneand a half hour written examination and answer two questions onyour performance pieces.

The majority of the work is practical. You will be working in pairsand small groups, exploring different theatrical techniques.Experimenting with how to creatively communicate mood andatmosphere as well as how to interpret and develop a character.Skills required are; listening, confidence, self-control, enthusiasmand creative initiative.

Anywhere! Drama is not just for those who want to pursue a careerin the theatre, television or film. It prepares you for any job whichrequires the ability to work with others and to express your ideas.

Learn how to design, model, make and evaluate electronic basedprojects. Learners will design and make electronic projects basedon hand held games during Year 10; in Year 11 electronic alarmprojects will be designed and manufactured. A great deal of workwill be completed on a PC or laptop. Circuits will be modelled onprototype board and simulated on screen. Electronic theoreticalknowledge together with environmental issues will be covered.

Because the thought of modelling circuits, soldering circuits, andmaking small electronic products appeals to you. This subject willhelp you with your education/career path. It involves controlledassessment work that can be researched at home and completed inschool. Particularly beneficial for a career in electronics,engineering and/or design.

The course is divided into two controlled assessments and aterminal exam. From the beginning of the course you will beworking for GCSE marks course that can banked before the finalexam.

If you are curious, creative and conscientious you will do well.Having the patience to solve problems and being able to applybasic mathematical and scientific concepts will be an advantage.

Design Technology Electronic Products is a great foundation forfurther courses or employment which involve designing,engineering, or manufacturing. Generally, this subject providesstudents with a toolkit of skills that can be easily transferred to othercourses.

Choose Fine Art if you are creative and would enjoy working practi-cally with a variety of materials to create exciting, individual and per-sonal outcomes. Select this course if you would enjoy exploring arange of themes and ideas whilst learning about how artists thinkand work. You will have the opportunity to learn to think and workindependently, working towards a GCSE over two years.

This course is 60% coursework and 40% exam. Both are assessedinternally and the externally moderated.

You need to enjoy art to take this subject. Good drawing andcreative thinking skills are helpful, but definitely not essential asthey can be taught. All you need is a willingness to learn and adesire to succeed.

After completing GCSE Fine Art, you could choose to go on to an ALevel Art or BTEC course, which would then lead to an ArtFoundation course and a range of creative art and design degreecourses. The study of ICT provides an insight into the significance andrelevance of computers, applications and communications in thework environment and everyday life. ICT is used in areas as diverseas manufacturing, education and medicine and ICT skills are valuedin virtually all areas of business and society. The GCSE course in Film and Media is in fact two separate GCSEcourses and students are awarded two GCSE grades upon com-pletion of the programme of study.

Given the fact that choosing this option can lead to two GCSEawards, the demands upon the students are relatively high. Howev-er, the course is structured so that any areas of common groundbetween the two subjects are studied together and students usesimilar skills in both subjects rather like they do in the Sciences andin English Language and Literature.

A single award in Media Studies may be offered in 2014 for thosestudents for whom a single award is more appropriate.

The Media and Creative Industries are a British success story andaccording to the Government, are worth around £8million per hour(that’s £71billion per year) to the UK economy. They employ around6% of the UK workforce. With the growth of social networking anddigital technology, the media is an increasingly important part ineveryday life on a global scale.

Media controlled assessment is worth 60% of the course and theexamination, which is on a new topic every year is worth 40% . InFilm studies the split between controlled assessment and examina-tion is 50% each. There are two film examinations on the set topicsof a genre study and a non-Hollywood film. Controlled assessmentin both subjects takes place throughout year 10 and into the firstterm of year 11.

Film and Media combine academic study (analysis and evaluation)with research and practical production skills in which students usedigital production software to plan and produce their own media andfilm products.

The next step in these subjects would be an A Level in Media orFilm, beyond that media related subjects are among the fastestgrowing in Higher Education. Media related careers include journal-ism, marketing, game and interactive media design, Film & TV pro-duction, broadcasting, and the importance of ‘media aware’ peopleis increasing in all industries and sectors.

GCSE Music covers a range of periods and styles of music, fromWestern Classical to Chart hits, Reggae to Bhangra. It is intendedthat you gain some theoretical knowledge and the opportunity todevelop your playing and composition skills. You are encouraged toperform and compose to your own musical tastes within givenguidelines. Music Technology enthusiasts are also catered for soelements of recording and editing techniques are also covered andcan be used as technology-based performances where students donot actually play an instrument.

If you have a passion for music and want to develop your knowledgeand understanding, performance and composing skills this coursewill provide you with a balanced, flexible approach to demonstrateyour musical skills. The Areas of Study are appealing and AQArecognise that many students love to perform in both solo and groupsituations; this is why the course has a 40% weighting towardsperformance.

You are assessed on your musical performance as part of a groupand also solo. This is worth 40% and can be done at any timeduring the course. You will have 2 controlled assessments whichare for composition. These are spread over the 2 years and worth40% of your GCSE. You will also sit a listening exam in the Summerof Y11 which is worth 20%

The subject works best for those with a musical background,especially those who have instrumental lessons or can play to areasonable standard. Anyone considering a technology-basedroute should possess some musical skills and understanding aswell as competent ICT skills.

You will learn about the music industry in general through twocompulsory core units. In these you will learn about the structure ofthe industry, the many job roles that are attached plus professionaldevelopment within the music industry. You will create a portfolio ofevidence to show your research and understanding of the industry .You will also learn about managing a music product. In the manda-tory unit you will learn about music production and analysis. You willthen have 4 optional units to take to make up your qualification.

This subject allows you to express your own musical creativitythrough solo and group performance. It enables you to develop yourmusicianship skills and gain confidence through performing on aregular basis. If you enjoy playing or singing in any capacity thiscourse will suit you as the majority of this course is dedicated topractical. The content of this specification enables a smooth transi-tion to BTEC Music at Level 3 or BTEC Music Technology.

Some units are externally assessed while others will be assessedby your teacher. Units are evidence or practical based.Throughoutthe course you will be given various musical assignments to com-plete. Psychology is the study of behaviour. Psychologists question whypeople are behaving in the ways that they do. For example; Why dopeople commit crime? Learn how to design, model, make and evaluate productsmanufactured from materials including plastic, wood and metal.Learners will search for real life problems to solve, then researchwhat people want and need. They will make sketches and drawingsusing pencils and computer design software and then buildprototype products using hand tools and computer aidedmanufacture.

Design Technology is an exciting subject for anybody who likes tosolve problems or has a creative mind. It is also great fun buildingyour own designs and using state of the art equipment likecomputer controlled laser cutters and routers.

The course is divided into two controlled assessments and aterminal exam. You will be working for GCSE marks from early inthe course that you can bank before the final exam.

If you are inquisitive, creative and determined you will do well. If youcan solve problems quickly and can communicate ideas by drawing,writing and by using computers you can excel.

Design Technology is a great foundation for further courses oremployment which involve design, engineering or manufacturing.

Sociology is about studying society. It is about exploring the worldwe live in and finding out why it is like this.We explore the what crime is, why it exists and how it effects us.We investigate why poor people cope in society, why families breakdown, why people leave education without any qualifications andhow the mass media affects us.

You should choose this subject if you are interested in the worldaround you, if you want to know why crime exists in society, whyfamilies break up, why the Mass Media exists. If you like to questionthings and not just take things for granted, then choose Sociology atGCSE

This subject enables you to express yourself in subjects that arerelevant to your age group: education, personal details, travel,leisure, the world around you, teenage relationships; health andwelfare, celebrations. It will widen your knowledge of other culturesparticularly Spanish speaking countries around the world.

You like language and literacy based subjects and enjoy words; youare interested in Languages, travel and culture; you have beensuccessful in Spanish so far and have been advised by your MFLteacher to continue; you want to go to university; you want to workin business in the future.

You will be assessed on speaking and writing. Assessments com-pleted throughout years 10 and 11 will contribute to the final mark.Listening and a Reading tests will also be completed as part of theassessments.

Skills in communication, Language, Literacy, analysis,memorisation, logic, method, application, tenacity anddetermination. Whilst linguistic ability is obviously an advantage,the desire to succeed can often be the key at this level.

Places, that’s where!! People who have qualifications in Languagesare amongst the most employable. Businesses are desperate forLanguages skills and languages qualifications ‘sit’ well alongsideany other discipline. The top universities will want to see aLanguage qualification at GCSE. Now for the really good bit ..research shows that Language students are more likely to be luckyin love and suffer less from dementia in old age !!!!
