Letter from the Church Secretary
Hello friends,
As I sit and write this letter it is aglorious September day. Looking out intothe garden I see the flowers blooming, a dragonfly flitsacross our pond and the birds drop in for a meal. Some of youwill see apples ripening on the trees and possibly blackberriesready to pick. How wonderful is God's creation of nature, sovaried and some quite free for us to enjoy.
We will soon be celebrating Harvest Festival and it is ouropportunity to give of God's bounty, to those who struggle tohave sufficient money to pay for daily food. Let us all joinour youngsters in the Uniformed Organisations by bringingour gifts, to show that we all realise the importance ofsupporting those less fortunate than ourselves.
We also will have the opportunity of giving to 'Commitmentfor Life' which is the United Reformed Churches specificoutreach to those in need around the world.
I look forward to Harvest Festival on October 12th andhope to see the church full of people giving thanks for allGod's goodness to us, the one God who loves us all.
Mavis
NOTE: - Our Minister is away on her Sabbatical until December 2014.So, during that period the Minister’s letter will be written by theChurch Secretary. Ed

In MemoriamA new widow requested the epitaph ‘Rest in Peace’ for her husband’stombstone. When she later found he had left his fortune to his mistress, she attempted to get the engraver to change the carving.
This was impossible; the words were carved in the stone and could notbe changed.
“In that case,” she said, “please add ‘Till We Meet Again.’ ”------------

DID GOD CREATE EVIL?------------
Did God create everything that exists? Does evil exist? Did God createevil?
A University professor at a well known institution of higher learningchallenged his students with this question: "Did God createeverything that exists?" A student bravely replied, "Yes he did!"
"God created everything?" The professor asked. "Yes sir, he certainlydid," the student replied.
The professor answered, "If God created everything, then Godcreated evil. And, since evil exists, and according to the principalthat our works define who we are, then we can assume God is evil."
The student became quiet and did not answer the professor'shypothetical definition. The professor, quite pleased with himself, boasted to the students that he had proven once more that theChristian faith was a myth.
Another student raised his hand and said, "May I ask you a question, professor?" "Of course," replied the professor.
The student stood up and asked, "Professor, does cold exist?" "Whatkind of question is this? Of course it exists. Have you never been cold?"The other students snickered at the young man's question.
The young man replied, "In fact, sir, cold does not exist. According tothe laws of physics, what we consider cold is in reality the absence ofheat. Every body or object is susceptible to study when it has ortransmits energy, and heat is what makes a body or matter have ortransmit energy. Absolute zero (-460 F) is the total absence of heat;and all matter becomes inert and incapable of reaction at thattemperature. Cold does not exist. We have created this word todescribe how we feel if we have no heat."
The student continued, "Professor, does darkness exist?" The professorresponded, "Of course it does."
The student replied, "Once again you are wrong, sir, darkness does notexist, either. Darkness is in reality the absence of light. Light we canstudy, but not darkness. In fact, we can use Newton's prism to breakwhite light into many colours and study the various wave lengths ofeach color. You cannot measure darkness. A simple ray of light canbreak into a world of darkness and illuminate it. How can you knowhow dark a certain space is? You measure the amount of lightpresent. Isn't this correct? Darkness is a term used by man to describewhat happens when there is no light present."

So it is written---------------
A story tells that two friends were walking through the desert.During some point of the journey, they had an argument, and one friend slapped the other one in the face. The onewho got slapped was hurt, but without saying anything, hewrote in the sand: Today my best friend slapped me in theface.
They kept on walking, until they found an oasis, where theydecided to take a bath. The one who had been slappedgot stuck in the mire and started drowning, but his friendsaved him. After he recovered from the near drowning, hewrote on a stone: Today my best friend saved my life.
The friend, who had slapped and saved his best friend, askedhim, "After I hurt you, you wrote in the sand, and now, youwrite on a stone, why?"
The other friend replied: "When someone hurts us, we shouldwrite it down in sand, where the winds of forgiveness canerase it away, but when someone does something good forus, we must engrave it in stone where no wind can evererase it. Learn to write your hurts in the sand and to carveyour blessings in stone.
.... Continued from previous page
Finally the young man asked the professor, "Sir, does evil exist?" Nowuncertain, the professor responded, "Of course, as I have alreadysaid. We see it everyday. It is in the daily examples of man'sinhumanity to man. It is in the multitude of crime and violenceeverywhere in the world. These manifestations are nothing else butevil."
To this the student replied, "Evil does not exist, sir, or at least it does notexist unto itself. Evil is simply the absence of God. It is just like darknessand cold, a word that man has created to describe the absence ofGod. God did not create evil. Evil is the result of what happens whenman does not have God's love present in his heart. It's like the coldthat comes when there is no heat, or the darkness that comes whenthere is no light."
The professor sat down. The young man's name - - Albert Einstein....

HOPE- + -
Churches in Carlisle washed cars and GAVE people a surprise giftof 50p rather than asking them for money - putting faith into wordsand action as part of Hope14.
A white-van-man came to get his van cleaned and was stunnedwhen they gave him money. He asked them why and theyexplained. So he went to church where he heard that they weregoing to help a family whose home needed a make-over. Hewent too and brought his work-mates. Together they carpetedthe whole house for the family. And now he has signed up for anAlpha course.
That's what Hope14 is about: faith in action AND words.
Be prepared to tell your story and who knows what God will do!

To be 8 again! -------------------------
A man was sitting on the edge of the bed, watching his wife, who waslooking at herself in the mirror.
Since her birthday was not far off he asked what she'd like to have forher birthday.
'I'd like to be eight again', she replied, still looking in the mirror.
On the morning of her Birthday, he arose early, made her a nice bigbowl of Coco Pops, and then took her to Adventure World themepark. What a day!
He put her on every ride in the park; the Death Slide, the Wall of Fear, the Screaming Roller Coaster, everything there was.
Five hours later they staggered out of the theme park.
Her head was reeling and her stomach felt upside down. He thentook her to a McDonald's where he ordered her a Happy Meal withextra fries and a chocolate shake.
Then it was off to a movie, popcorn, a soda pop, and her favouritecandy, M&M's. What a fabulous adventure!
Finally she wobbled home with her husband and collapsed into bedexhausted.
He leaned over his wife with a big smile and lovingly asked, 'Well Dear, what was it like being eight again?
Her eyes slowly opened and her expression suddenly changed.
'I meant my dress size, you stupid old fool.'
The moral of the story: Even when a man is listening, he is going to getit wrong.

PRAYER OF THE MONTHFrom the Buckland Parish magazine - May 2007
May God be with thee in every pass,Jesus be with thee on every knoll,Spirit be with thee by water’s roll,On headland, on ridge, and on grass; Each sea and land, each moorand each mead,Each eve’s lying-down, eachrising’s morn,In the wave-trough, or onfoam-crest borne,Each step which thy journey doth lead.
From Poems of the Western Highlanders
Remember
Remember me when lam gone away,Gone far away into the silent land; When you can no more hold me by the hand,Nor I half turn to go, yet turning stay.Remember me when no more day by dayYou tell me of our future that you plann'd:Only remember me; you understandIt will be late to counsel then or pray.Yet if you should forget me for a whileAnd afterwards remember, do not grieve:For if the darkness and corruption leaveA vestige of the thoughts that once I had,Better by far you should forget and smileThan that you should remember and be sad.

Surprise in Heaven
I dreamt death came the other nightAnd heaven's gate swung wide,With kindly grace an angel cameTo usher me inside.
And there, to my astonishment,Stood folk I'd known on earth; Some I had judged as quite unfitOr of but little worth.
Indignant words rose to my lips,But never were set free,For every face showed stunned surprise -No one expected me!
