Fellow Mustang Scouters, Scouts and Guests

As we prepare to celebrate the 100th Birthday of our Sam Houston Area Council at the Scout Fair on April 12th, it is important that we take a moment to celebrate our heritage and success as one of the strongest districts in the Council.

Among our successes during 2013:

• 2nd highest point total in Council among all districts toward Journey to Excellence • 102 young men earned the rank of Eagle Scout in 2013 • 17,936 reported hours of service performed by the Scouts and Scouters in our units • 24 of our units earned their own Journey to Excellence Award

We also pause to remember our dear friends Marv Kiel and Cliff Powell who passed away recently, and to thank the great Scoutmaster above for giving us such great examples of hardworking, dedicated family men and Scouters.

We thank each and every one of you for the time and dedication you put into the greatest youth program in the nation, we ask each of you to continue recruiting at all levels, and we ask each of you to enjoy a nice evening of fellowship with our fellow Mustang Scouters.

Yours in Scouting,

Matt WoodruffDistrict Chairman

2013 Commissioner ServiceDistrict Commissioner - Rachel Miller

The role of Commissioners is to help units succeed by providing units with meaningful service that delivers Scouting ideals to youth, brings about membership growth, and ensures on-time charter renewals. The Commissioner insignia displays a wreath around Scouting’s trefoil to represent the commission of service to chartered organizations and to show the partnership with Scouting’s professionals who also wear the wreath.

All Scout leaders and Parents are invited to attend Roundtable. Share in the Fellowship ofScouting; learn about upcoming events and activities; share your experiences; continue your training; and participate in ceremonies, games, and presentations. Meeting time is 7:30pm every second Thursday at Memorial Drive United Methodist Church at 12599 Memorial Dr., Houston, TX 77079

Many thanks to Troop 599 and Troop 642 for exceptional presentations at the Boy Scout Roundtable

2013 SILVER BEAVER AWARD

Charles Handly, Jr.

John has been active in Scouting from the time he raised his hand to be a Den leader for Pack 599’s new Tiger Cub group. His inspiration came from his mother volunteering to be a Webelos Den Leader when none of the other parents would step forward to help. He helped for 5 years with the Pack activities and led his Den. John has served for 4 years as the Mustang District Fall Recruiting Chairperson where he has helped Cub Scouting grow throughout the District. Some other positions John has held are that of Texas YPT trainer and Scout Fair Coordinator for Troop 642. He was recently nominated to be an Order of the Arrow adult leader. For anyone that has attended Mustang Program Preview, John always brings amazing enthusiasm and creativity to his presentations that both motivate and make you laugh. Cynthia has been active in both Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. She served as Pack 599 Popcorn Kernel and developed a very effective spreadsheet recording system that is still used today in the Mustang District for Popcorn sales. Cynthia has volunteered at Mustang District Summer Camp and as Cookie Mom for Girl Scout Troop 20281 where she continues to be Troop Treasurer. She excels at fund raising activities in all aspects of Scouting. Harold is a Boy Scout with Troop 642 where he has achieved the rank of Star Scout and is currently serving as a Patrol Leader. He started in Scouting as a Tiger moving through the ranks to Webelos and earning the Arrow of Light award. Anna is a Girl Scout at Troop 20281 where she attends Girl Scout camp and is a top cookie seller. She has demonstrated great salesmanship skills and is always willing to help her brother with Troop fundraisers. The brother and sister make up the “dynamic duo” selling team that make it difficult for just about anyone not to buy whatever they are selling as a fundraiser. The Tobin family live by Scouting values and selflessly give their time to make the Scouting program a success. They are an inspiration to all!

2013 District Award of Merit

Dennis WilliamsThis long time Scouter believes in the Aims of Scouting, which are Character development, Citizenship and Mental & Physical fitness. He has served the scouts of Mustang in many roles. As an Assistant Scoutmaster he has helped young men learn the skills of leadership, planning and cooperation while they gained confidence in their abilities. As Troop Committee chair, he developed and organized successful scouting programs by encouraging and mentoring other adults. Many of our Mustang leaders were trained by him through the “Troop Committee Challenge” course. He himself became a better scouter by attending many of the training opportunities, including Wood Badge, College of Commissioner Science and University of Scouting. Through this training he has earned the Bachelor and Masters degrees for Commissioners. Because of his commitment to many of our district units as a Unit Commissioner he has been honored with the “Robert Root Award for Outstanding Commissioner Service”. He is a member of the Gentlemen’s Committee for the Cattle Barons Ball and active in the local and national chapters of the Gas Processors Association. He supports the youth of Chapelwood United Methodist Church by serving on the Scouting Ministry Board.

Kurt GoedeckeKurt is a long-time Mustang Scouter, which is to be expected from one who has seen two sons through their Tiger days to the pinnacle of their Eagle ranks. He has been active from the get-go, volunteering initially as a Tiger leader. He quickly stumbled his way into pack leadership as Committee Member and Cubmaster of Pack 73 and similar positions in each of his sons’ troops. That’s right – each boy chose a different Mustang troop to continue their Scouting journeys. Along the way, he became a regular at District Roundtable and became involved with various events such as Cub-o-ree which he chaired for a few years. After Wood Badge, he began assisting with District Scoutmaster Training, which was fortuitous as he soon filled that position in Troop 922 and continues to this day. Kurt always supports District programming and Webelos Woods and Camporee are calendar staples when the troop annual plan comes together. I have been fortunate to observe at close range as Kurt methodically administers the Boy Scout program as it was meant to be run by Baden-Powell. He has been married to his wife Connie for 28 years and they have three children, Amelie, Thomas and Gregory. In his ‘other’ job, Kurt serves as the Director of Development for Lutheran Foundation of the Southwest. He is active in his local congregation, Christ the Servant, the TX-LA Gulf Coast Synod Council, the Houston Boy Choir and Toastmasters, among others. Kurt is an Eagle Scout (1971) and Brotherhood member (1974) of the Order of the Arrow.

Stuart SaimsStuart Saims began his adventure in Scouting leadership with the Cubs of Pack 152. Joining with Troop 152 he volunteered service as an Assistant Scoutmaster. For the last three years Mr. Saims has stepped up and served as the troop Scoutmaster. During all these years, he only missed one summer camp and has made the majority of winter camps. He is well trained including Scoutmaster specific, Wilderness First Aid, Canoe, and Woodbadge training and has received his “Beads”. He has helped staff District Cub O Ree, Camporee, is a Merit Badge counselor and helps at Merit Badge Fair. Fulfilling these roles, he has always been properly trained including the Catholic church Virtus program. After numerous years of encouraging the scouts to participate in the religious emblem program he now teaches the Pope Pius XII class at Troop 152. Throughout his involvement in scouting he has actively supported and promoted the annual “Puff Up” and Catholic scout retreats. Each February he organizes the Scouts to attend Sunday mass on Scout Sunday. Mr. Saims’ leadership has been instrumental in the development of the spiritual character of his scouts. Outside of scouts, he is active with the Knights of Columbus council #4550 as their youth program leader and has volunteered with St. Jerome Life Teen Mass for the last two years.

C2 Imaging - HoustonC2 Imaging is the leading supplier of professional media graphics solutions. The company was created more than 30 years ago with one goal in mind: To offer customers the widest range of integrated digital media graphics solutions available anywhere in the world. C2 Imaging Houston, formerly Chroma Copy, has been managed by Mary Anna Bond since it’s inception in 1982. Over the years, she has been providing professional quality print material and design services to local non-profits with limited resources that otherwise could not afford to purchase the products. In 2003 Mary Anna became a Cub Scout leader and began printing flyers and signage that contributed to the growth of Pack 1631 and Troop 631. Soon after, she was approached by other Scouters and thus began her relationship with the Mustang District. C2 Imaging has supported this relationship in Scouting by enabling her to provide the service and materials at or below cost, and on occasion for no charge at all... such as this program.

To recognize those campers - Scouts and Scouters - who best exemplify the Scout Path and Law in their daily lives, and by such recognition cause other campers to conduct themselves in such manner as to warrant recognition. To develop and maintain camping traditions and spirit. To promote Scout camping, which reaches its greatest affectiveness as a part of the unit’s camping program, both year-round and in the summer camp, as directed by the camping committee of the council.
