Kielbasa Spinach Soup

Combine 32 oz. chicken broth, 1 pkg. (10 oz.) frozen chopped spinach, and 1/2 lb. smoked kielbasa or Polish Sausage, halved and sliced, in a large saucepan. Bring to a boil. Add 1 can (15 oz.) cannellini or white kidney beans, rinsed and drained, and 2/3 cup uncooked elbow macaroni. Reduce heat; simmer, uncovered, for 7-9 minutes or until macaroni is tender. Stir in eight drops hot pepper sauce. Yield: four servings

Games and Chili Cook-off

"How blessed are the people who experience these things! How blessed are the people whose God is the Lord!"- Psalm 144:15 "Spin the spinner and call the shot, Twister ties you up in a knot"- Twister theme song It may not have been the coldest evening this winter, but it sure was a great night for chili. I didn't attend this event last year but I heard so many good things about it, I felt like I had to come and experience it for myself. Eating chili and playing games at the same time? It sounds like madness! I can't honestly say that it wasn't but it was the best kind of madness. I defy you not to have been hungry for chili if you entered the sanctuary Sunday night. The aromas of nu-merous chilies bounced off our heads and entered our noses. Pastor Troy, perhaps sensing the frenzy that was about to happen, quickly said grace and we were unleashed on the Crock Pots. Not just the chili, but the side dishes called out to us. We heard and answered the call. We ate Fritos, Bob's sweet cornbread and many bowls of chili. There was shredded cheese and sour cream to top the chili. I don’t envy the judges who had to decide which chili was the best. My answer: the one I was currently eating. I must have sampled five different ones. As my stomach rumbled in digestive distress I still looked longingly at the ones I hadn't tried. A special shout-out to the ones with pork and the really hot one at the end. The judges awarded Mitchell Gravenmier with the hottest chili. The best chili prize went to John and

Laura Collings. We sat with our stomachs full yet still wondering if we could fit in just one more bowl when the announcement came that game time was beginning. Could we move? Yes we could.

Youth Groups

Sonrise Youth exists for the purpose of instilling four qualities in each student’s life.

C4: 1) Christ-like 2) Committed 3) Competent 4) Con-tinuous. Through these we hope to build youth who will live out our common mandate as believers to “Love God, Love people.”

Sonrise youth group meets on Sundays at 7:00 p.m.

The focus of Sonrise Kids Club is on biblical learning and Bible memorization. There are also sto-ries and games. This is for children age four through sixth grade and

runs on Wednesdays from 7:00—8:30 p.m. Suggested dues of $1.00 per week.

Men’s Bible Study

Wednesdays, 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. All men are welcome.

Women’s Bible Studies

Wednesdays, 9:15 – 11:15 a.m. and 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. The morning group begins Ken Ham’s, “Foundations” on March 12 (cost $5.00). The evening group begins Sandra Glahn’s, “Java with the Judges” on March 12 (cost $10.00). Childcare is provided for both studies.

Groups split in all directions to grab a game and get playing. There were two solid games of Apples to Apples. Some younger kids got 'Uncle' Kevin to spin the Twister wheel. A group started playing a game called Spouseology. I was assured that the winner did not get a new spouse. There was a drawing game called Telestrations. The Haile’s were playing a game so complicated that it could only be called Labyrinth. There was a table that was engaged in Mind Games with Pastor Chris. I think I lost that one. John made me promise not to print the game he suggested so I am not going to. The most popular game of the night was called Spot One. I only have a vague idea about the rules but I'm pretty sure I didn’t see Holly Thompson slap Ryan Moore. All too soon the evening came to an end. Board games were replaced with the vacuum up the Frito piece game. Eating chili was replaced with the clean-ing of the Crock Pots. We drove home for the game of 'find the antacids'. We slept well with full bellies, tired muscles, and only the occasional nightmare about Mitchell's ghost chilies.

The Burden on His Back. For the wages of sin is death . . . If you listen to Christian radio you’re going to hear a lot said about God’s love. It’s appropriate. God is love. We know this from 1 John 4:8 and other portions of Scripture. Unfortunately we often have remedial or incorrect understanding of what true love is. We are often guilty of focusing complete-ly on God’s goodness and mercy and love to the neglect of His other attributes. Sometimes this is a direct response to a previous faith experience that seemed legalistic, judgmental and devoid of Chris-tian charity. Certainly, there has been much error in this regard in both the past and the present. However, swinging the pendulum too far the other direction isn’t a cure-all for the lack of grace by some. Rather, it is just invitation to another sort of error. . . All of this to say that I think we’ve forgotten how bad sin really is. Too often we think of sin as something that God casually wipes aside, like it was no big deal. We laugh about it, make excuses for it, and tempt our-selves with it. If we really think of our own char-acter shortcomings we label them as mistakes or genetic deficiencies. Surely we are not real sin-ners—not like mass murderers or child rapists. Unfortunately, our ability to dismiss our own guilt as inconsequential is a real problem. It shows we do not understand either sin or the greatness of God’s love. I have been reading through Pilgrim’s Progress with my two boys. OK full disclaimer, not the full version of Pilgrim’s Progress but the abridged car-

toon strip version that I bought at Lifeway. Never-theless, I am again impacted by the awareness the protagonist had of his own sin. It was his knowledge of his sin that led the character, Chris-tian, to salvation. Without an understanding of our guilt before a Holy God can we really appreciate our need for God’s mercy? Make no mistake, sin is an ugly, horrible thing. It is an affront to a Holy God. It destroys families, wrecks lives, and continues to corrupt this already broken world and the people who live in it. We often think we can control sin, or make accommo-dations for small transgressions. This shows a great deal of audacity and ignorance on our be-half—it shows that we forget not only the offense that sin is to God but also the pervasive and de-structive nature of sin. To think we can live a healthy spiritual life while clinging to sin is to be-lieve that we can safely lick a petri dish of tubercu-losis simply because we have a gym membership. Sin will distort our thinking and corrupt our souls. Any willful sin will eat away at our very moral fiber creating a hardness of heart. Over time we will be tempted to change our thoughts of God so that we do not have to face our guilt and the conse-quences of our actions. Sin kills.

Surely you have watched the news or read the pa-per and cried out at injustice and evil at work in the world today. That is sin. And it is our sin as well. When we are willing to make allowances for our own evil that is the world we create.

But Pastor, you say, my sin doesn’t compare to those things. I’m a good person. Maybe. By your own standards. I’m sure Hitler’s mom thought he was a good boy. I’m always amazed that when a criminal is shot in the process of committing an armed robbery, the response of the family is usual-ly I don’t understand why they shot him. He was such a good boy. Nevertheless, even if we grant that there are those who perpetrate far worst acts on society, keep in mind that sin creates a sport of spiritual lycanthrope consuming the host and turn-ing the man into a monster. It is only through God’s grace that sin is prevented from running its full course and that we have not all turned into the monsters it would make us.

Missionaries of the Month

Tooele Christian

Fellowship

Under the leadership of their bi-vocational pastor, Dan Butcher, the mission church in Tooele, UT has had some good growth. But when

churches are doing well, Satan loves to disrupt things. That happened in the Tooele mission church. They had three board members who pro-vided leadership along with the pastor. One board member left last summer for personal rea-sons. Another had a disagreement on about when church discipline should be used and left the church. Our son, David, was the third board member and his job moved him to the Denver area. So, the church now lacks leaders to work with the pastor. Pray that God will supply the leaders needed to help the church grow either from within the congregation or from new mem-bers that are qualified. There is a good spirit among those who are left, so pray that the church will continue to reach new people in the Tooele Valley.

Good News Jail and Prison Ministry 11th Anniversary Fundraising Banquet, Thursday, April 3rd, 7:00-9:00 p.m. at the Sheraton City Centre. An offering will be received during the program to help raise the funds needed to continue providing life-changing ministry to the men and women incarcerated here. (From the Sr. Pastor, continued) And yet we play with sin and fail to take it seri-ously. There are many among us who no longer want to talk about things like sin and judgment. Some would say that no one should ever be made to feel shame or the weight of their own guilt. But, you see, it is in view of our sin that the truth of God’s love has profound meaning. While we were still sinners Christ died for us. He died to take our penalty, our guilt, our shame so that we could be restored to God. He then takes His new-ly adopted children and conforms them into His own Holy image. That’s love. But I don’t think we’ll understand it unless we understand how great our past offense is and how excessive the penalty we have been pardoned from. And I pray that we will learn to hate sin just as much as our Father who saved us. ~ Pastor Troy

The Fellowship Ministry Team is looking for people to join their “Cleaning Team!” They are respon-sible for cleaning the fellowship room, kitchen, coffee area, and handicap and women’s restrooms.

Kids Club Spirit Day March 26: Green Day and Store

First things first, I am not Pastor Chris. But we had the following exchange earlier this week. Note to purists, this conversation didn't really hap-pen like this: Me: Hey, Pastor Chris. It seems like some of your recent notes have been specifically directed at me. Pastor Chris: It wasn't specific. Me: Oh. Pastor Chris: Would you like to write my column this month? Me: Sure, why not. So here I am. I thought I would really get him. I thought I would print the verse in Ezekiel about 'not breathing your brother's oxygen' or God's command to Moses, "Thou shall not drive a blue car." But it turns out that those verses don’t even appear in the Bible. I'm sure that the Bible has something to teach us about resisting change. But what exactly does it say? I Corinthians 5:17 “So then, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; what is old has passed away – look, what is new has come!” So what does this mean? When we get saved we are to become a new creation? I get that. But once I am saved, I don’t have to change anymore, right? What does God have to say about that? I Corinthians 3:2 “I fed you milk, not solid food, for you were not yet ready. In fact, you are still not ready.” Okay I get this one. I have kids. When they were small, all that their little bodies could digest was milk. When their bodies developed, they could handle solid food. In fact, if I turn my back during dinner they are likely to steal my steak. So being a Christian is like that. We get 'milk' when we are new Christians and then as we mature we get more

solid theology. That means we are to change. But I don’t like change. I am still driving the same car I bought 23 years ago. Can I still resist change around the church building though? What does the Bible have to say about that. Haggai 1:4 “Is it right for you to live in richly paneled houses while my temple is in ruins?” Maybe my house doesn’t have panels but the meaning of this passage is pretty clear. Our keep-ing of God's house is a reflection of how important He is in our lives. Would all of the changes be a way of improving the grounds and showing others how serious we take God? But how can we know? Romans 12:2 “Do not be conformed to this present world, but be transformed by the re-newing of your mind, so that you may test and approve what is the will of God – what is good and well-pleasing and perfect.” So, if we are transformed by the Spirit of God, that is how we can test and approve what God's will is. All right, I guess I can accept some changes. I can also accept that I should help make those chang-es. But I am still going to look for some of those verses. They are probably next to the prophecy that warns against Windows 7. ~ Not Pastor Chris (Really, not Pastor Chris)

Valentine's Day Children Care

This is Robby Earle and I will be telling you about the Valentine’s Day children care. The whole point of the Valentine's Day Children care was that parents could drop off

their kids to spend the evening with each other. When the Bassham’s came in, we

told them that the Spanish church was doing something. Matthew came over and

yelled at Garret, "STOP TALKING!" much louder than Garret was talking. First of

all, Garret and Matthew had this Olympic Wrestling game that turned into the poking

game. Then Isabella and Daniel, wearing their pajamas, came into the room with their

mom and dad. Daniel was wearing Spider-man pajamas and Isabella was wearing

sporty soccer pajamas. The pizza was from Little Caesar’s and it was greasy but good!

We also had Doritos and Capri Sun. Garret was climbing the fake kitchen; Matthew was climbing the

shelves, while Isabella, Daniel, Katie, and I were chatting in the corner. Finally they started the movie which

was Monsters University. We all had the best night of our lives.

Our college age life group meets on Sundays, 4:30-6:00 p.m. at the Colson’s. This is for high school graduates-age 25. The group is going through the TrueU DVD series. Contact Pastor Chris or Holly for more information.

"Everyone did what was right in his own eyes." Sound familiar? In the history of the nation of Israel, the period of the judges was a lot like today. They had the me-centered "I" problem mastered--just like we do. As a result, they kept getting themselves oppressed by other nations. Then God would raise up judges to deliver them. This study is chockfull of exciting drama--from Ehud the Knifer to Samson the Seduced to Deborah the Leader. Their stories--whether by negative or positive example--can inspire us to do what is right in God's eyes no matter what the cost.

His Princess Brides

Hi again! As you know I'm Katie and I'll be writing about His Princess Brides again! In February we had a pizza and cleaning party. It was fun! O.K. here is

what happened, first we cleaned and then we had pizza. What we did was

take everything out of the cupboards and cleaned them. And I mean eve-

rything. We found interesting things in the cupboards that we didn't even

know that the church had! We

cleaned the cupboards before we

cleaned the kitchen supplies, and

boy were the cupboards dirty!

Then we cleaned the kitchen sup-

plies. I was the official dryer! I had

to dry lots of things! And while I

was drying I would constantly ask Trish what these strange

things were! We found a lot of things that the church was look-

ing for in the past. We reorganized the cupboards (sorry to those

who were looking for something and didn't find it in its regular

spot!) So, if you're looking for something and can't find it,

blame us. We cleaned, and cleaned, and cleaned, and

cleaned! Finally it was time for: pizza pizza pizza! Oh,

pizza the word every kid can't resist! We could finally

have pizza after all that cleaning! We took the pizza out

of the oven and Trish cut them into slices so we could

enjoy them! The cutting seemed to take forever! Finally

we ate the

yummy pizza

and talked then

I had to go. But

it was a great

day.

News from the Rescue Mission Hockey and the Homeless Hey there, hockey fans! On Saturday, March 1, 2014 the Utah Grizzlies are playing the Alaska Aces and if you buy the tickets through us, half of the proceeds will come back to support our emergency and recovery services for the homeless. What more, our tickets are cheaper than any-where else: $12 for a corner section seat (usually $16) and $20 for a center section seat (usually $25). That's a win-win-win!

On top of everything, this will be a "Skate with the Players" night, so bring your ice skates and meet your heroes after the game. (You may also rent the skates at the rink for a fee.)

Most Christians know the famous chapters from Isaiah: 6, 7, and 53, but what about the other sixty-three? Isaiah prophesied during the reigns of four kings of Judah, bringing many different messages from the Lord. Come and learn about God's plans both past and future - the fall of wicked nations, the coming of the Messiah for redemption, and His future return to reign forever. J.W. Yearsley is leading this class which continues from last quarter.

We grow in Christ as we seek Him together. Jesus' own pattern of disciple-making was to be intimately involved with others. By gathering in a small group to study the Bible and encourage one another, we closely follow Jesus' example. Led by Jim Yearsley.

In a world obsessed with sensationalism, not all hidden things are poisonous and dark. Some secrets are forgiven, some are covered, and some are kept between you and God. Find out what happens when we let God teach us "wisdom in the secret heart" (Psalm 51:6). Join us in the Fellowship Room for Beth's latest DVD study. Joyce Yearsley will lead this class.
