Language Immersion
“Learning in two languages develops inactive brain areas and increases creativity and problem solving skills” – Drs. Thomas & Collier
Carl A. Furr ElementarySplash Spanish Immersion
Opened in 2013. Currently have first graders and kindergartners
Open Enrollment Program with no transportation
A maximum of 96 kindergarteners will participate in Splash in 2015-16
First priority will be given to students who live within the Furr Elementary attendance zone
All other Splash students from outside the Furr attendance zone will be selected via a random drawing
What is Splash?A 50/50 dual-language immersion program
Students are taught the same standards and content as those in a traditional kindergarten class, but those standards are taught in two languages
Students follow an A/B day schedule spending one day with the English-speaking instructor and the next with the Spanish-speaking instructor
How do students benefit from being in Splash? Research shows:
Students become bilingual (speaking, reading, and writing)
Learning another language requires higher level thinking which improves students’ creativity, problem-solving skills, and performance in other academic areas
Students in dual language programs perform higher on End-of-Grade tests than their peers in traditional classes
Promotes cultural awareness and diversity
