2016 Klondike: A Lewis & Clark Expedition

A Lewis & Clark ExpeditionOpening Ceremonies

In 1804 Meriwether Lewis and William Clark spent over 3 years leading an expedition through the wild country known as the Pacific Northwest. They were the scouts for President Jefferson and each with different objectives. Their trip was laced with beauty and challenges. They started the trek in St. Louis and by winter time they reached an area very near to us, North Dakota. This is where they spent the

winter months alongside the Mandan Indian villages.

They faced many challenges along the way and particularly in the winter. Your adventures today will challenge you just as they may have been challenged during the winter of 1804.

During Lewis and Clark’s stay next to the Mandan Indian Village they met various groups of people. They worked well with each other and soon Lewis and Clark made many friends. Likewise we ask each troop and crew to bring to the opening ceremonies their unit’s flag. If your unit does not have a flag you can purchase one or make one to use. We raise the American Flag

Awards

Ribbon’s will be presented to the winning patrol for each event. These ribbons can be attached to your unit’s flag pole. A final ribbon will be awarded to the top three units. Senior Patrol Leaders are responsible for coming forward to receive the ribbons.

Additionally a Gift Card to Davanni’s in the amount of $75 will be awarded to the winner of the trivia contest.

Closing CeremoniesFollowing the Awards closing ceremonies will also follow in traditional scout fashion.

Many thanks go out to all the past and present Boy Scout Activities Committee members for the planning of Three Rivers District Boy Scout events. At the present time, there are many positions that need to be filled on the Boy Scout Activities Committee. Ideally, someone from every Boy Scout troop and Venturing crew should be represented on the Boy Scout Activities Committee. If your unit does not currently have a representative, please contact Kevin Conelly or Marcy Johnson. Creating exciting and challenging Boy Scout and Venturing activities is a rewarding experience for adults and youth alike. Having well planned and memorable activities is the best way to keep our youth in scouting for the duration. Please accept this invitation to become a part of this special team of volunteers and help us craft the scouting experiences of the youth of Three Rivers District.

A special thank you goes out to Troop 233 from Anoka for planning this year’s Klondike Derby. Many hours of work goes into planning quality activities. By running a district activity, your unit will be strengthened. It might seem like a lot of work (and it is) but it is also fun and your scouts will grow and become better leaders by the skills that they acquire in taking on this endeavor. What your scouts and your unit get out of running an activity is a unique and is not easily replicated in another environment. If you want to bring your unit to the next level, consider running a district activity. Contact Kevin or Marcy to get your unit on the books for a district activity.

Everyone who is in attendance at district events need to pay the participation fee including staff members. If you have someone from your unit who is serving as a staff member for this event, your unit should collect money from this person and plan to include them on your roster like all other members of your unit. Staff members who are not affiliated with a unit will register and pay through the district.

Our hope is that you and your youth have an enjoyable and memorable time at Klondike. A thank you goes out to all the volunteers who will lend their talents and services during the weekend to make this Klondike a big success!

If you have any questions, feel free to contact any of us.

Medical Form BindersIn order to comply with safety requirements, medical forms for all participants must be on hand for the event. We HIGHLY recommend that your unit assemble a 3 ring binder with medical forms for all of your registered youth (even those not attending this event). Units will be responsible for managing the whereabouts of their binder during the event, but needs to be available in the event of an emergency. It is preferred for your binder to be handed in at check-in so it is at a central location in camp at Colbert Lodge in the event of needing access to it.

SledsDust off your Troop & Crew Sleds!!!! The sleds will be used for various events during the day! Don’t have a sled? Google “Klondike sleds” and you’ll have a plethora of guides to choose from.

EventsThis year you will be taking on challenges that Lewis and Clark could have faced during their expedition. Keeping that in mind the events will build upon teamwork and communication.

Unit SuppliesEach Unit will need to supply a few items that will need to remain on their sled throughout the day. A list of those items will be posted to the Three Rivers website and to the Klondike Facebook page once it is finalized. Arrange for your troop or crew flag to be attached to your sled. This will be your a designation throughout the day.

Additionally, please remember to wear warm clothes, bring a water bottle, first aid kit and a day pack to carry these in. It will be expected that each scout is carrying a personal first aid kit.

SkillsVarious skills will be used throughout the day. First aid, tomahawk throwing, cooking, physical fitness, agility and teamwork just to name a few.

Uniforms and AttireMost importantly, dress for the weather! Avoid cotton clothing, and layer up with long sleeve shirts, sweaters, jackets, long underwear, snowpants, etc! The Klondike Derby is an outdoor all-day winter event. Be prepared for a long cold day- even if it isn’t! All scouts need good outdoor winter clothing, such as long johns (thermal underwear), gloves, hats, warm coats, multiple pairs of socks, good boots, etc. Dress in layers, so layers can be removed or added if necessary. Patrol members not properly prepared for the weather will not be allowed to compete. No exceptions! Patrol leaders should conduct a winter clothing training session with scouts as part of their Klondike Derby preparations. Dehydration is a problem at all winter events so each patrol member should come with 1-2 liters of water.
