Day One: Tuesday, November 11, 2014

• Class: We are now going to begin to examine the current issues in the Middle East in specific countries. Americans always ask the question as to why there is so much conflict in the Middle East and why should we care. Well, the main reason why the Middle East is so unstable is due to the foreign policy of the West in the 20th century. • To introduce us and give an overview, the teacher is going to read aloud the

short reading from the New York Times “How the Middle East Got That Way.” As the teacher reads aloud, you should be using Active Reading Strategies.• Individual/Homework: You will now begin to read the photocopied

supplemental reading on “The Islamic Republic of Iran.” Whatever is not finished in class is your homework for tonight.• As you read, you are to highlight key points in the provided Teacher Notes on

the Right Side and add new information and your thoughts and reactions to the Left Side.
