LHS FOOTBALL

By Israel PotocznyThe Daily [email protected]

Although his du-ties have changed this summer, Lebanon foot-ball head coach Will Christian said his goals for the LHS football program remain the same — he still hopes to bring a state champion-ship to Lebanon.

In his 10th season at the helm for the Yel-lowjackets, Christian added to his official duties the role of ac-tivities director in July, replacing former AD Tim Pezzetti.

Christian has put to-gether a 56-40 record in nine previous seasons, and the ‘Jackets are 33-11 since going 10-1 in 2010.

Christian said he felt Lebanon’s undefeated team in 2010 was per-haps the closest a ‘Jack-et team has ever been to winning a title in recent years. But play-ing shorthanded with-

out standout running back Kalyb Blackywell, ran into a buzz saw in the playoffs and lost at Lee’s Summit West, 31-0.

The Titans went on to win a Class 5 state title.

“In 2010 we thought w e w e re e x t re m e l y close,” Christian said. “Arguably if Blacky-well was healthy and that element and the run game was be t -ter and you approach things different, you never know.

“Obviously the team that beat us (Lee’s Sum-mit West) won it all.”

Christian said the most obvious compo-nent that is easily mea-sured is the number of seniors on a team’s roster.

“Now I think that one of things so im-portant is the size of your senior class and how good you are,” Christian said. “So one thing certainly that you

could potentially look at is next year we have 30 some seniors.

“That’s a excit ing number. No guaran-tee from that as well, but cer ta inly that ’s something you know you look at when you study some of the folks that do reach that level — one of the attributes that they have is large senior groups.”

Christ ian was the head coach of a Mari-onville team that won a Class 1 state champi-onship in 2004, the year before coming to Leba-non, and said teams that win it all often experience a break or two along the way.

“There are a lot of breaks that are neces-sary and there a lot of things that have to go your way,” Christian said. “Some of those you can’t control and some those you can. Focusing on controlling the ones you can is the important portion.”

DESPITE BEING LOW ON NUMBERS, LHS GIRLS’ TEAM IS STRONG ON TALENT

With just 10 runners out for the team in 2014, the Lebanon girls’ cross country team isn’t big on numbers, but features sev-eral standout runners, in-cluding sophomore Kelsey Winfrey, sophomore Mad-die O’Connor and junior Cheyenne Black.

Winfrey, who quali-fied for sectionals last season and narrowly missed qualifying for the state meet, is not playing volleyball (she played both during the fall last season) and is concentrating on earn-

ing a trip to the state championships.

“I’m really looking forward to (Winfrey) do-ing well,” Lebanon head coach Teresa Moore said. “(O’Connor) is keeping up with her (Winfrey) on road runs and is re-ally working hard, and they are both sopho-mores so it is going to be tough on them.”

Moore said the ‘Jack-ets were looking forward to a two-mile time trail on Thursday at Cam-denton, and an oppor-tunity to test themselves against Tessa Webber, a returning standout.

“We’re running kind of short on the gir ls side, we’ve only got 10 runners,” Moore said. “They’re working hard and we’ve got some that I think will do really well. We have a lot of girls that are running.”

Another runner who is in the varsity mix i s f r e s h m a n A l y s s a Long, who enters her high school career with strong credentials after a standout junior high career. She was the win-ner of the eighth-grade meet at Forrest Park in St. Louis last season, one of the state’s largest

meets.“She is right up there

with Kelsey and Maddie and is running the same mileage and the same pace,” Moore said. “I am expecting big things. As a freshman coming in, she is right there with Kelsey and Maddie.”

Black will likely be the fourth runner on the girls’ team according to Moore and is a team captain.

“I look to her for lead-ership,” Moore said. “She is a great leader. She doesn’t have the foot speed that Kelsey and Maddie has, but she

has the leadership skills that we need.

“She has a work ethic that the kids need.”

Breanne Nelson, a junior, and Haley Bean, a junior, are both out for team, along with Julie Bledsoe, who ran ran for a portion of her fresh-man year, is back out for the team this season.

“(Bledsoe) is working hard, but will probably be our seventh runner,” Moore said.

Zoe Page is one of two Lebanon seniors on the girls’ side and is a standout track athlete in the 300-meter hurdles.

“She has a couple of colleges looking at her and this is a conditioning program for track where she shined,” Moore said. “I’m not expecting her to be our Nos. 1-2, but I would expect her to run varsity.”

Freshman Zoe Wright is currently out with a knee injury and is side-lined to start the season. Wright is also a member of the band as well.

“She is a big part of the program,” Moore said. “We are working around her band sched-ule.”

Also out with a knee injury is sophomore Saria Collins, who had surgery during the summer.

“She is an excellent runner, but we have to get her through the injury,” Moore said.

Also in the mix is senior Emily Niffen, who Moore said has signed a six-year contract with the US Mili-tary.

“She could very well be a varsity runner,” Moore said. “She is running so she will make it through basic training. She has made a connection with the team, knows what she wants

to do with her future, and is using cross country to prepare for that.”

On the boys side, the ‘Jackets will be led by seniors Tony Bennett, Tristan Reeves and Seth Schenk, as well as junior Tharron Roy, sopho-more Dylan Lane and freshman Brayden Simpson.

“Bennett’s focused this year on go-ing to state,” Moore said.

Lane is out for the cross country team for the first time this season.

“He is burning it up out there on our road runs,” Moore said.

Simpson ran with the Lebanon ju-

nior high program last season and is in the varsity mix this fall.

“He is running right up there with that top group,” Moore said.

Hunter and Landon Sawyers are also keeping up with the top group and could earn a varsity spot this fall as well.

“I’ve got a group of about nine or 10 boys that come every morning for practice,” Moore said. “In the afternoon, we have had to take it a little easy due to the heat, but in the morning I watch these boys run, and they’re good. It is just a good group

of boys that is working well together and that is what it takes to win.”

Sophomore Matt Allen started last year as a freshman and came out late for the team this season, but is looking good, according to Moore.

“He has a lot of talent and we are looking for good things from him,” Moore said. “He is one of those that doesn’t say a lot.”

Moses Farr, sophomore, is back after taking a year off from running.

Also in the mix is Isaiah Howe, a

The Lebanon volley-ball program has been hard at it throughout the summer, hoping to put behind it a disappoint-ing 6-19-4 season in 2013. In her third season at

LHS, head coach Brittni Allison has a deep and experience squad as the ‘Jackets return several players who have been a big part of the varsity in years past, and lose just two seniors, setter Sydney Huff and defen-

sive specialist Savannah Jackson.

“(The team) gained a lot of experience last year as a young squad,” Alli-son said. “This year they are stepping up, and a lot of the older girls have a lot of experience.”

Payton Hough, who did not play last season, is one of four seniors on the squad this season, joining returners Ashton Light, Ashley Schaefer and Madison Day.

“All four have varsity experience and are very

athletic players,” Allison said. “They are very ver-satile and can play any position.”

Day could see time as an outside hitter or back row.

“She is one of the most ath-letic players that we have, the thing with her is consistency,” Allison said. “She will get up and crank the ball and she is one of our best hitters.”

Light is a defender with several years of varsity experi-ence.

“She brings stability to the back row,” Allison said.

Five juniors are also likely to see varsity time this season. Mikalyn Callahan has not been with the squad during the sum-mer after suffering an injury during the soccer season but is expected to return. Also in the mix is middle Maggie Plake, Carrington Peace, Lindsay Pemberton and Olivia Weaver.

“Peace is one of our most versatile players, she can play any position out there on the court and it will be interest-ing to see which position she earns,” Allison said. “Pem-berton is stepping up from

the JV and she is a very solid defender. She is under control, she is always in the right spot and makes it look easier than it really is.

“Weaver can play middle or right side (hitter). She is very tall and will provide a lot on the blocking side of things.”

Middles with be junior Mag-gie Plake and sophomore Faith Alwardt. On the back row will be Pemberton, Light and Hough.

“When they are all three on the back row, and they are in some rotations, they are very strong,” Allison said. “At the other positions there is going to be some rotation and they are still competing for their spot.

“We’ve got a lot of promise there for the hitters as well.”

Stepping into a new role this season will be Ashley Schaef-fer, who Allison said was a hitter last season but could see

time as a setter this year.“She has really improved

on her setting,” Allison said. “She is a left-handed, right-side hitter, so for her to be setting, it is just really tricky for the other team to block against, especially since she’s left-handed.”

New to the varsity roster this season will be sophomore setter Haddi Luthy.

“She sees the fl oor very well and we are excited about what she can bring,” Allison said.

Lebanon opened the season on Monday with a loss at Bran-son, but bounced back with a dominating performance in its home opener on Tuesday against Marshfi eld, defeating the Blue Jays, 25-13, 25-14.

The ‘Jackets were led by senior outside hitter Madison Day’s six kills, while Payton Hough added eight digs, and Haddi Luthy fi nished with 10 assists.

Lebanon head coach Ron Crowell is excited to see what a strong offsea-son has in store for the upcoming tennis season.

Crowell said the ‘Jack-ets offseason was among the best the program has had in his 10 seasons as tennis coach as several players made big commit-ments to summer training this past summer.

“We had really good participation and just a b o u t e v e r y b o d y a t camp,” Crowell said. “We had a big turnout for open

court and a big group go to Drury University Ten-nis Camp. They all took advantage of the opportu-nities they had this sum-mer and that has been really encouraging.”

Leading the way this season is Leslie Hawkins, who will step up from No. 2 singles last year and replace departed senior Nashe Luthy at No. 1 singles.

Hawkins teamed with Crystalyn Crouch last season to take fourth place in No. 1 doubles at the Ozark Conference tournament.

“She is really doing

well,” Crowell said. “She is a great athlete who runs down everything. You can’t get anything by her. She gets a lot of tennis balls in play and is hitting with more pace now.

“But she is also getting to where she can think out a point too and out-think an opponent.”

Among the players who have seen their offseason work already pay off is junior Maddie Trumbo, who, after play-ing No. 5-6 singles last season, has moved into the No. 2 spot.

LHS golf team has experience returning, new assistant coach

By Israel PotocznyThe Daily [email protected]

Lebanon head coach Rod Sullens is looking forward to an exciting season with a new assistant coach and a squad of players who have experienced varsity golf before.

The ‘Jackets have one senior out for the squad this season, Renee Hudson, who played golf as a freshman and sophomore before tak-ing her junior year off.

“We’re really excited to have her back on the team,” Sullens said.

The ‘Jacekts have just two newcomers, sophomore Whitney Moyers and fresh-man Emily Elsea.

“I really like them, they are working hard and get-ting better,” Sullens said.

Also back for the team are juniors Kalie Berry, Lor-

ran Blackwell, Autumn Kirkland, Dyanna Newton, April Robinson and Tori Williams.

“Most all of them had some varsity time, and they are looking at varsity time,” Sullens said. “Most of the (team) have played before. We are being serious and trying to work hard, give a good effort and we’ll be happy with whatever results we have.”

For the fi rst time in his 12 years coaching golf, Sullens has an assistant coach, Brit-tany Stamm, who played for Sullens.

“I’m really glad to have her,” Sullens said. “She knows about golf, is a good helper and the kids like her.

“I’m just really thrilled to have someone to help me out this year. I couldn’t think of a better person to help.”

Lebanon senior Leslie Hawkins is playing No. 1 singles this season after playing No. 2 singles as a junior last season.

from page 8TENNIS“I knew she would be

in our top six, but she has really come on strong,” Crowell said. “She has im-proved quite a bit. I think her offseason was really big for her. She took private les-sons along with everything else that we were doing and put a lot of time in.

“It is really paying off for her.”

At No. 3 singles is se-nior Britten Oberbeck, who has been playing tennis competitively since sixth grade.

“She has really had to work hard for everything she has gotten,” Crowell said. “She has really been hitting the ball as well as she has her entire career, and I think she is going to have a really good year.”

Oberbeck was the last varsity match on the court her fi rst match of the season on Monday, and

trailed Waynesville’s Paige Massey, 3-0, but battled back to win, 8-6.

“She has really come a long way and we are ex-cited about her having a big year,” Crowell said.

Sophomore Grace Dow has earned the No. 4 varsity singles position after play-ing JV last season.

“She is another one whose hard work in the summer has really paid off,” Crowell said. “I thought she might compete for a varsity spot, either No. 5-6, but she really came on strong and has earned the No. 4 spot.

“I think (Dow) is another one whose offseason has really paid off for her.”

Junior Morgan Ander-sen is a solid doubles player who plays the net well and has earned the No. 5 singles spot after seeing spot var-sity action last season.

And at No. 6 singles is senior Brenna Qualls who returns after sitting out her junior seasons. Qualls was a varsity player two years ago as a sophomore.

“(Qualls) has already played some big (varsity) matches for us,” Crowell said. “She is a very solid doubles player who is a hustler. She is going to make you earn it to beat her.”

Lebanon opened the season with a 9-0 win over Waynesville, then swept all seven junior varsity matches.

“You always want to play well in the fi rst match,” Crowell said. “The kids came out and had the right frame of mind and played hard and competed. That is a nice way to start and hopefully set the tone for the season.”

CHRISTIAN: ‘JACKETS HAVE STRONG TEAM CHEMISTRY

Coming off 6-4 season, Lebanon has 19 seniors out and returns 14 starters

Coming off a 6-4 season in 2013, the ‘Jackets return nine starters on offense and five on defense.

Lebanon has 19 seniors on its ros-ter this season, and head coach Will Christian said the team chemistry is strong.

“An adjective I would use with this group to this point is family,” Christian said. “I think they’re a tight knit group, which is a breath of fresh air. A year ago I felt like we had a lot of division. When you have division you have a ton of issues. So thats one adjective I would use. Another adjective I would use with this team is physical. I feel like we play physi-cal football.

“We have to get better in a lot of ways, but I feel like our kids will hit you. And then they are coachable. I think anytime we bring anything to them they seem to be open to doing

anything we ask.”It’s not the biggest team the ‘Jack-

ets have fielded, but Christian said the team’s athleticism will help make up for its lack of size.

“If I had to pick, either being really big and not every athletic, or not very

big and athletic, I’m going to pick not very big and athletic,” Christian said. “In a perfect world, you want to be very big and very athletic — but we’re not very big.”

valuable playing time this seasonBy Israel PotocznyThe Daily [email protected]

Several members of the Class of 2016 are getting valuable playing time as var-sity regulars this fall for the Lebanon High School football team, led by offensive line-men Hayden Weddle and Colby Lathrop.

Weddle, 6-foot-1, 205, is starting at right guard, while Lathrop, 6-foot-1, 240-pounds, is starting at right tackle for the ‘Jackets.

“They are really playing well at right guard and right tackle,” Lebanon head coach Will Christian said. “They are playing above their age right now. Very aggressive, athletic with their feet for offensive linemen and playing really really well.”

Also contributing are Levi Pettyjohn, 5-foot-9, 175-pounds, is playing a little bit at inside linebacker, while Lakiah Capps, 6-foot-1, 175-pounds, is playing a lit bit of safety.

Also in the mix is Hunter McGuire, 5-

foot-10, 155-pounds, is playing at outside linebacker.

“All of these guys are contributing on special teams as well in some role,” Christian said.

Potentially in the mix is running back Dillon Wagoner, 6-foot-1, 190-pounds, who is currently out due to injury.

“He is somebody who will get some reps down the road,” Christian said.

Lebanon has Mark Dalangin (WR/CB), Brock Reeves (RB/NG), Maxwell Shelton (TE/OLB), Dillon Leck (WR/CB), Dylan Rodden (OL/LB), Cody and Tyson Wil-liams (OL/DL), Dylan Dampier (T/DE), Noah Heltzel (T/DT), Elliot Byrd (G/DT), Tyler Blankenship (T/DT), Logan Heisz (WR/CB), Mason Bright (WR/CB), Dako-ta Strong (WR/CB) and Chris Lindeman (RB/OLB) listed on its varsity roster.

Many of those players helped make up a JV that won its opener over Rolla, 52-0.

QUARTERBACK : Lebanon has three players competing for time this season at the quarterback position, led by junior Luke Winfrey (6-1, 190), who is coming off a strong sophomore season that saw him complete 60 per-cent of his passes and throw for 1,427 yards and six touchdowns.

Winfrey missed much of the past offseason as he recovered from injury and illness, but has since regained his starters role.

“Luke is our starter and my stance on this is, with an injury situation, we rarely dethrone a kid due to that,” Christian said. “Obviously, the player that takes their place has an opportunity to make that happen, and I thought Cody has done a tre-mendous job and has moved closer with Cody’s maturity, but Luke is still our starter.

“Luke has looked good, his arm strength gets better every day and his

comfort level is getting better every day. He is ahead of where he was last year at this point, which is a positive. We still have some rust with the lay-off, but I feel very good about where he is at right now.”

Junior Cody Lundgren (5-10, 165) saw a lot of playing time in Win-frey’s asbsence this summer and impressed.

“There is no question in my mind that we can win ballgames with Cody Lundgren,” Christian said.

Also in the mix is senior Chad Howerton (6-4, 170) who served as the JV quarterback in each of the past two seasons.

RUNNING BACK : Elza Evans leads the way in the backfield, and after putting together a big junior year in which he rushed for 1,496 yards and 19 touchdowns, opened the season with a big game at Rolla in week 1, rushing for more than 300 yards and four scores.

“One thing that he has done a really good job of is training his lower half and making himself faster,” Christian said. “I would say at this time last year, he was a 4.9 40-yard dash guy and he is a 4.5 40 guy now and it is showing in pads,” Christain said.

Several players are in the mix be-hind Evans, including junior Adrian Palmer (5-9, 190) and junior Brandon Horsley (5-9, 180).

Currently out with an injury is ju-nior Carson Lybarger (5-9, 190), who rushed for 175 yards and a touchdown last season.

OFFENSIVE LINE: The ‘Jackets are led by a standout offensive line, anchored by senior Dusty Lucas (5-9,225) at center. The ‘Jackets also returns junior

Isaac Archer (6-6, 255) at left tackle. Juniors Hunter Bilger (6-0, 190) and Davin Malone (6-0, 260) are pencilled in at guard and sophomore Colby Lathrop (6-1, 240) at right tackle. Se-nior Chaz Matlock (6-2, 255) is in the mix as well.

“Our offensive line is playing ex-tremely well,” Christian said. “They did a great job in protection (against Rolla in week 1). Our offensive line played extremely well and obviously they are going to have to stay hungry and I know coach (Mark) Whitacre will make sure they do they that.

“They are p laying wel l , very well.”

As one of the ‘Jackets’ smaller lines in Christian’s 10 years at Leba-non, the were some initial question marks, but many of those have been answered through the early stages of the season.

“I think there was some question marks,” Christian said. “Here the thing I would say to those that can

assess that at this point is that No. 1, having an offensive line that is not as big, but are very athletic and have a high motor that will play really hard are better than offensive lines that are huge and slow and lazy.

“That’s kinda of what we got right now. We have a group of offensive lineman that are going to play really really hard every snap.”

WIDE RECIEVER : The ‘Jackets have plenty of depth at wide receiver where as many as eight players could rotate in and out of the line-up.

Junior Lane Groce (5-10, 160) has opened the season strong and has teamed with senior Noah Baade (5-10, 200), junior Kendrick Tiller (5-11, 160), senior Ben Wallace (6-4, 160), senior Brandon

Newell (5-9, 140), junior Zach Ivey (5-9, 145), senior Doug Uder (6-1, 165), junior Tanner Angst (6-2, 150) and junior Ryan Skeens (6-4, 160).

“I feel like a lot of those kids can play and contribute and stay fresh,” Christian said. “There is a lot of com-petition. Depending on formation, we are not always going to be four-wide, we might be two-wide with a tight end and two running backs. There are a lot of different packages and there is a lot of competition, especially when we are not four-wide.”

Senior Michael Webster suffered a broken ankle in an auto injury and is out for the season, according to Chris-tian. He was slated to be a starting wide receiver this season.

“Our hearts are out to him, he is still going to be a part of our team, and a valuable part, but he is no lon-ger able to play,” Christian said. “That changed the depth chart a little, but we feel like at wide receiver we have a lot of kids.”

At t ight end is junior Kenyon Breedlove (5-10, 160) and senior Ben-nett Brown (6-1, 180).

DEFENSIVE LINE: Defensively, the ‘Jackets have a lot of competi-tion on the defensive line. Returning is senior Caleb McGinnis (6-3, 190) who recorded 18 tackles last season. Junior Kasin Thomas (6-2, 175), senior Jordan Allen (6-3, 225), junior Wesley James (6-2, 250), senior Eric Travis (6-1, 250) and senior Shane Posten (6-0, 215) are all in the mix.

Christian said LHS a handfull of offensive linemen will fill in on the defensive line.

“We’ve got a lot of depth on the defensive line and we are planning on playing a lot of kids,” Christian said. “We typically rotate a lot on the defensive line. We could play as many as eight kids on our defensive line substantial reps. We feel McGinnis is a starter for us and he was a camp MVP at University of Missouri Team Camp and had a good summer.

“We have high expectations for him and are excited to get him back.”

McGinnis opened the season by finishing second on the team with 11 tackles, adding a sack and four quar-terback hurries.

LINEBACKER: Junior Adr ian Palmer (5-10, 205) and senior Nick Pearcy (6-0, 200) will lead the way at inside linebacker and senior Scott Mahan (6-0, 180) returns at outside linebacker.

“All three of them are really good leaders and very passionate play-ers,” Christian said. “Pearcy was a first-team All-Ozark Conference player last year and our expectations are very high for him and he will be entering his third season.

“Palmer, I feel like is as talented a kid as there is. He has a tremendous nose for the football and is extremely strong and athletic. We feel like he has the potential to be as good a line-backer as there is.

“Mahan does a great job, is very disciplined and is a very passion-ate kid. I thought he always gave us a spark last year and plays with energy.”

Palmer opened the season with 16 tackles against Rolla, including 12 solo tackles and three tackles for loss.

Also in the mix is senior Caius Gil-len and junior

LHS TO FEATURE YOUNG TEAM

LHS hopes to ride strong summer on the diamond into high school season this fall

One year after going 13-11 overall and 5-4 in the Ozark Conference, the Lebanon softbal l team will have to re-place several seniors, including its starting shortstop, second base-man, first baseman and a pair of outfielders.

But the Yellowjackets have already put in a lot of time this summer on the diamond getting ready for the upcom-ing season. With the graduation of several key seniors, head coach Charlie Pentecost said the team has been look-ing to fill key holes.

Lebanon played in a league in Rolla and picked up several other games throughout the summer, competing in Waynesville, Marshfield, Bolivar and Branson.

“You never know, summer t ime versus the fall, you don’t al-ways have a firm grasp on who is going to be there and who is coming out,” Pentecost said. “It is kind of chess match during the summer and you really have to focus on individual skills.

“There are going to be opportunities for young kids to step up and make an impact. We feel like we have kids capable of doing that.”

Lebanon returns six seniors who saw sig-nificant varsity time last season as juniors.

Returning are Bailey Allen, Tristin Hisel, Jo-Hana McGuire, Allan-

nah Morque, Lauren Pentecost and Brittany Rogers.

“McGuire had a good season on the mound (in 2013) and will probably get the bulk of our innings this year,” Pentecost said. “Morque will probably play some fi rst base and do some pitching as well and we are looking for big things from her. Lauren Pentecost started in sev-eral of the outfi eld spots several times last year and had a really good start to the season. And Allen has been a mainstay at third base.”

Rogers played some left field, played center field when Hollie Car-roll took over on the mound, and later saw action at second base when Emily Sheets went down with an injury.

“Versatility-wise, she real ly helped us out there,” Pentecost said. “We have some anchors, we have some kids that have some experience and we fee l l ike the leadership capabilities are there. We are looking for some good things from them.”

The ‘Jackets also re-turn junior catcher Tay-lor Blattel, a two-year starter behind the dish who was an All-Ozark Conference and Al l -Region performer as a sophomore.

“We are looking for her to step up and fill an even more important role this year and more of a leadership role,” Pentecost said.

Pentecost sa id the ‘Jackets have 11-12 play-

ers currently in the mix for a varsity role this s e a s o n , a n d s e v e r a l players could see time at different positions throughout the season.

“We have some possi-bilities of moving some people around,” Pente-cost said. “We are pla-tooning a little bit here and there, and we are running some people in and out. There are some possibilities still that we might do some shifts and move some people, but we pretty much have it nailed down to 11 or 12 kids.

“We feel like we have a little bit of flexibil-ity to where we can do some things different if we need to, but I think we are pretty well set with that number and it’s just going to be some shared time.”

Also in the mix this season are outfielders Chloe Johnson and Kay-len Tubbs. Johnson is also capable of pitching and will likely see in-nings on the JV.

“Chloe has done a good job,” Pentecost said. “ She really was a infielder and we kind of moved her to the outfield and she does really a good job out there and she does a good job at the plate. So she is somebody we are looking at stepping in making a difference.”

Tubbs started against Ozark in right field on Wednesday and had one of the ‘Jackets two hits, a double to right center field.Lebanon, MO

T h re e g a m e s i n t o the 2014 season, the Lebanon softball team was st i l l looking for its first run and were slated to play a crucial home game on Thurs-day against Norwood — its fourth game in as many days.

Despi te the rough start, head coach Char-lie Pentecost said the Yellowjackets’ best soft-ball is likely ahead of them.

“This first week has been just brutal,” Pente-cost said. “We start off on the road against two really good teams, then your home opener is against another really good team. Thats just the way it goes

I guess sometimes.”The ‘Jackets are 0-3

through Wednesday, dropping games to Boli-var (8-0), Jefferson City (10-0 in five) and Ozark (13-0 in five).

Lebanon was sched-uled to host Norwood on Thursday, a game Pentecost said he is con-fident the ‘Jackets can bounce back and win.

The ‘Jackets have seen opponents put together big innings to pull away in each contest this sea-son as Jefferson City scored six times in the fourth on Tuesday. On Monday, Bolivar scored five times in the third to turn a 1-0 game into a 6-0 contest.

“We have seen really good pitching all three

games,” Pentecost said. “That’s just something we need to take in stride and we need to under-stand that’s what we got to hit. When the pitching is there we have to step up and put the bat on the ball and make some things happen and (Wednesday) was a little bit better than (Tuesday) and (Tuesday) we had a lot of contact, we just hit it right at people.

“Against Bolivar (on Monday) we had way too many strikeouts, but it’s been kind of that story (but) we have seen some things get a little bit better here and there.”

On Wednesday, Ozark led Lebanon 2-0 in the top of the fifth at Bo-swell Park, but scored 11 times with two outs to

LHS SOFTBALL

Pictured are the 2014 Lebanon softball seniors. From left, are Lauren Pentecost, Bailey Allen, Allannah Morque, Brittany Rogers, JoHana McGuire and Tristin Hisel.

“She is one of those kids that you just never know that something may happen and its a good thing that when you least expect it she comes through,” Pentecost said. “We saw that a lot out of her last year on the JV level. She is going to get quite a bit of time in right field. That may be a spot we platoon some also, but right now if she keeps hitting the ball like that thats going to be a good thing for her.”

After mostly playing third base and outfield, Tristen Hisel has moved to short stop this season where she is splitting time with Shelby Hicks.

“We kind of moved her over to shortstop this year and have her play-ing there some and she’s going to be platooning there (with Hicks), but she does a good job for us,” Pentecost said. “She wants to get better, she is just focused on getting better every game and working hard to do that.”

Hicks started the ‘Jackets’ game on Tuesday at Jefferson City and came in to play short in the fifth inning against Ozark.

“They are basically kind of platoon-ing there and splitting time at short,” Pentecost said.

Also in the mix is Jaden Offut who will see time in the outfield, and Al-lison Meyers, who came in and pinch hitter in the fifth against Ozark.

“(Myers) has some really good pop in her bat and so were looking at her at possibly getting some at bats for sure throughout the year,” Pentecost said. “So really those are kind of the key ones that were looking at kind of 12 deep.

“We got a couple of younger kids to that are kind of pushing for some varsity time. There is a possibility that some of those may step in and get some playing time as well.”

from page 18SOFTBALL

from page 17SOFTBALL

“We were one strike away from getting out of that inning and keeping it a 3-0 ball game, and when that big hit happens just kind of defl ated us a little bit,” Pentecost said. “That’s one of those things that we got to get mentally tough and we just got make sure we step up and regroup from that and thats a tough thing to do, espe-cially here early in the season.

“We are still trying to get our legs. We are still learning and that kind of thing.”

One day after being no-hit and having just one baserunner (a walk drawn by Lauren Pentecost) in a fi ve-inning, 10-0

loss at Jefferson City, Lebanon got just two hits and two baserunners against Ozark starting pitcher Brittany Nimmo.

Nimmo threw the fi rst four innings before making way for a relief pitcher, but the ‘Jackets went in order in the fi fth as well.

“We have done a better job at the plate,” Pentecost said. “That fi rst game against Bolivar, we really struggled to put the bat on the ball. The last couple of days the pitching has been better and we have done a better job of contact and making some things happen.

“That’s something we just gotta con-tinue to do as we continue to see good pitching, we just have to make sure we are ready to hit.”

LHS got a solid performance on the mound from left hander JoHanna Mc-Guire before the wheels fell of the wagon for the ‘Jackets in the fi fth and Allanah Morque came on in relief to record the fi nal out.

“(McGuire) threw a good game and she’s been doing a good job at hitting her spots and is good with location,” Pentecost said.

“We feel like our overall team speed is a strength,” Christian said. “I feel like our kids are running well and we are athletic ... position 1 through 22, our kids can run, including up front. We feel very good about where we are in athleticism and depth.

“We feel like we are deeper than we have been than we have been.”

“I think he is going to do really well for us,” Moore said.

Junior Brayden Reid is out for the first time and is keeping up with the top group despite having never run cross country before.

“He’s is eating it up and is doing really well at the workouts,” Moore said.

Junior Dakota Biddinger is also a 300-meter hurdle runner in track who is running cross country this fall to stay in shape.

“He shows up for every morning and afternoon practice and works re-ally hard,” Moore said. “He has the speed, he just doesn’t have the speed for three miles.”

Sophomore Jaylan Miller is a move-in from Plato who will run junior var-sity this season, and junior Constantin

Picoron, is a foriegn exchange student from France.

“It is a good group of boys that is working well together and that is what it takes to win,” Moore said. “They don’t have to go out and win a race to win a meet, but if we can have five score in the top 30, we are going to win some meets.

“We probable don’t have a state champion, but we have a team that is going to compete as a team.”

Yellowjackets expect talented and experienced senior class to have big season

HIGH EXPECTATIONS FOR SENIORS

see ‘soccer’/page 26

By Israel PotocznyThe Daily [email protected]

This is the year Lebanon boys’ soc-cer head coach Matt Jernigan has been building towards.

One year after winning 10 games and nearly breaking the .500 mark, the Yellowjackets are expected to have as many as 16 seniors out for soccer in the fall, many of whom already have three years of varsity experience un-der their belt.

“We’ve been saying for a long time, if we’re going to do something, this is the year we need to do it,” Jernigan said. “We have a very big senior class that have all been playing since their freshman year.

“This is what we have been build-ing toward.”

Jernigan will be leaning on senior All-Region players Cody Cates and Nick Wapplehorst who are a big part of a deep senior class.

“They are are both going to be very good and are looking at going on and playing at the next (college) level.”

From there, Jernigan said he will be trying to fit the remaining pieces together.

“It is going to be like a puzzle,” he said. “We want to put guys in the right spots and make the team the best we can.”

Four years ago, several of the cur-rent seniors got a large dose of play-ing time as freshmen simply because there wasn’t enough players to field a team otherwise. But things have changed as a recent team camp drew 25 players.

“This year it’s not if you can kick a ball you get onto the field,” Jernigan said. “Players are going to really have to work to earn a varsity spot.”

Jernigan said a big goal this upcom-ing season is improving on its one win in the Ozark Conference.

“We are looking to get in the five to six win category in the Ozark Con-ference,” Jernigan said. “It’s always competitive and wins don’t come easy, but we are hoping we can get above the .500 mark and make a run in the postseason.

“I think the boys know they have a chance to do something special this year, something that hasn’t been done in Lebanon in a long time.”

The Missouri State High School Activities Association has expanded

boys’ soccer from three classes to four, and assignments will be released in August. Jernigan said Lebanon is on the cusp of either being a Class 3 or Class 4 squad.

“That really puts us at a disadvan-tage, not knowing what our district is going to look like,” he said. “But we are hoping we can be competitive once that comes out.”

LHS will also compete in a tour-nament at Belton against several of the top programs in the Kansas City area.

“We got invited up to play in that tournament, so that was an honor and we are excited about that trip,” Jernigan said.

Jernigan said the excitement around soccer has been higher than usual this summer with the World Cup taking center stage. More than 40 soccer players hosted a watch party for team USA’s first World Cup game, and several players are expected to attend a match on July 23 between Sporting KC and Manchester United in Kansas City.

Swinging into the new season

Bears must replace four seniors from squad that went 21-5 in the spring

CONWAY BASEBALL

By Alizabeth Donaldson, Alivia Donaldson and Hayden GravesConway Chronicles

CONWAY — On Aug. 4, the Conway Bears baseball team started practice for the upcoming season. Clay Bilyeu is the head coach, Steve Kirkwood and Jacob Childers, a former player that graduated from Con-way in 2010, are the assis-tant coaches this year.

Tyler Hawkins and Ca-leb Goss, both on the team, agreed that, “The team members push each other to work hard.”

They also said their team goal is to be district and state champions.

The whole team and

probably even all Con-way sports fans would agree that Hartville is the team’s biggest rival. When asked why, Hunter Dame, varsity pitcher, said, “The rivalry has been going on for many years, and it’s just because they play at the same level we do.

“It is back and forth with them between con-ference champs each year.”

With the seniors gradu-ating last year, the team lost a lot of experience, a four year starter, two-three year starters, the best hitter, and three all-state players. However, with the new freshmen coming up, the team gained a lot

of bodies. The team is large this year, which is good because when the current juniors graduate the team cant reload.

“The main goal for the team is to just fi gure out ex-actly where everyone fi ts,” Bilyeu said. “We have a good solid 12 varsity play-ers that see regular time. We just need to fi gure out where all the pieces fi t.

“We have a lot of kids that can play the game. It is just fi nding out what po-sitions and what pitching matches will work.”

Come out and support the Conway Bears base-ball team. It is sure to be an exciting season with the Bears.

CONWAY — With fall right around the corner, there are many amazing things to look forward to. This includes cooler weather, bonfi res, and beautiful scenery. For schools however, fall means much more — it is the start of various sport seasons. Cross Country is one of these sports.

The Conway High School cross coun-try team is led by coach Andrew Lowery. He has been a runner all his life. Mr. Lowery has taught at Conway for three years.

Matching up against the competition

CONWAY VOLLEYBALL23 FRIDAY, AUGUST 29, 2014 LEBANON DAILY RECORD 23FRIDAY, AUGUST 29, 2014

“I ran cross country in high school and college,” Lowery said. “I am very passionate about running.”

There are 11 high school and six junior high students in cross country this sea-son. To prepare for this season’s meets, the team is doing a variety of workouts, which include easy runs, tempo runs, a speed workout, and long runs. The team’s fi rst meet is on Aug. 30 at Straf-ford.

The team and Lowery defi nitely have major goals they would like to accom-plish, but also encounter challenges.

“Two of our goals are that one, we hope to send someone to the state meet and secondly, we would like to win our conference meet,” Lowery said. “The biggest challenge is to try to get everyone able to run at a fast pace and compete at a high level.”

Rachel Coryell, a junior on the cross country team, said, “My main goal is just to beat my personal record from last year. I think Hermitage will be the most chal-lenging meet because we have to run up the side of a dam. I am extremely excited about this season. I have been looking forward to it since the end of last year’s track season.”

“I am very thrilled about this season. I am a manager for the Cross Country team, and I enjoy cheering on the run-

ners. I think motivation is very important in order for the runners to succeed,” said Brandon McMahan.

Mr. Lowery has a particular quote that he uses as encouragement for his team. The quote also sparked the idea for this season’s t-shirt.

“I personally like the quote, ‘To give anything less than your best is to sacrifi ce the gift’ by Steve Prefontaine,” Mr. Low-ery said. “Our team shirts will say ‘Our sport is your sport’s punishment.’ I know this season is going to be awesome.”

This year, the cross country team is hosting The Beastly Bear 5k Run and One Mile Fun Run as their fundraiser. All of the proceeds will benefi t the cross country and track team.

The fundraiserat 8 a.m. on Sept. 13. The cost is $15 for students and $20 for adults.

All participants that pre-register are guaranteed a t-shirt. Awards will be given to the overall male and female win-ners, as well as the age group winners. Also, door prizes will be given away after the race. Last year, the cross coun-try team gave away more than $1,000 in door prizes.

CONWAY — The Conway High School volleyball season is about to start, and the team is excited about the season.

“I became the volleyball coach because I played through college and love the competitiveness,” Conway head coach Tammy Beckler said. “I love working with the team and seeing a players excite-ment when they accomplish a goal. We are focusing on solid defense, consistent passing and trying to fi nd weaknesses against opponents.”

The volleyball team has gained eight outstanding new freshmen. They have been working very hard to meet the re-quirements to play in the fi rst match.

Carolyn Alexander, a freshman vol-leyball player, said, “I’m looking forward to working with the older kids and learn-ing what they know. I’m also looking forward to working with my teammates.

I play middle front and middle back. I enjoy playing because I love volleyball. I really look up to Kaitlyn Palmer and Taylor Caffey, they inspire me not to quit, and they are really encouraging.”

On junior varsity there are eight fresh-man and two sophomores. On varsity there are two sophomores, three juniors and four seniors.

Taylor Caffey, a senior volleyball player, said, “I’ve been playing volleyball for six years including jr. high. The team needs to work on our verticles. We have a lot of shorter players than most teams, but we will overcome that disadvantage. I’m looking forward to playing in games to see how well the team does and to see the excitement on the girls’ faces when we make a good play or good win.”

The volleyball team lost seniors Taylor McCowen. Lauren Reid, Chrystal Sell, Riley Mackey and Emily Atkinson, but have four current seniors to take their places.

LEBANON BOYS’ SOCCER

Senior Cody Cates has big weekend as ‘Jackets play shorthanded at Marshfield Tournament

LEBANON BEGINS WITH SECOND-PLACE FINISH AT MARSHFIELD TOURNAMENT

By Israel PotocznyThe Daily [email protected]

MARSHFIELD — The Lebanon boys’ soccer team opened the 2014 season with a second-place finish on Saturday at the Marsh-field Tournament, posting wins over Fair Grove and Osage.

The ‘Jackets opened the tournament with a 1-0 loss to Marshfield on Friday, but bounced back with wins on Saturday over Fair Grove, 4-1, and Osage, 3-0.

Lebanon (2-1) and Marsh-field were scoreless late in the first half, but the ‘Jays got a goal late in the first half and held the ‘Jackets

scoreless the rest of the way to preserve a 1-0 win.

“It was our first game without (senior) Nick Wapel-horst up top and we kind of struggled to find out who was going to score for us,” Lebanon head coach Matt Jernigan said. “Cody Cates in the midfield played well, and freshman Kaleb Harlow started at forward and did very well for his first varsity game. The defense played very solid. Marshfield was very aggressive and our de-fense held up well. It didn’t feel like we gave our best effort. I think there was a little bit of nerves being our first game.”

On Saturday, the ‘Jackets

got two goals and an assist f rom Cates and Harlow added a goal in a 3-0 win over Osage.

“We played really well in that game,” Jernigan said. “We talked about somebody needing to step up into a scoring role with Nick gone and Cody did that for us and had a couple of really nice goals.

“He is one of the faster kids in the area and you can see his speed on the field. It’s tough for defenses, he can kick the ball ahead and run by.”

In the final game against Fair Grove, Cates added two goals and two assists, and Harlow and Jaret Sharn-

horst each added a goal.“We knew that was going

to be a tough game, and it was 1:30 p.m. and every-body was warm and worn out, but I thought we played well,” Jernigan said. “We fought through the heat and had a lot of depth coming in off the bench.

“After not scoring the first night, scoring seven goals in the next two games is a big deal for our team, knowing that even without Nick out there we can still put the ball in the back of the net,” Jernigan said. “It was an al l -around good weekend and we got to see some guys in positions that they aren’t used to with all

the injuries we’ve had.”Already playing without

Wapelhorst, an all-region performer last season, the ‘Jackets lost another key player when senior Nick Dorris went down with a knee injury.

Jernigan said Dorris’ sta-tus is uncertain.

Lebanon’s game on Tues-day was cancelled due to i n c l e m e n t w e a t h e r a n d will next play on Sept. 2 when the ‘Jackets host West Plains.

“It will be good for us to have a little time off just to get healed up and get back to our normal starting eleven,” Jernigan said.

27 FRIDAY, AUGUST 29, 2014 LEBANON DAILY RECORD

By Israel PotocznyThe Daily [email protected]

The Lebanon boys’ soc-cer team opened the season on Aug. 23 by hosting its fi rst-ever jamboree, play-ing three tough matches against Ozark Conference and Central Ozark Confer-ence opponents.

The Yellowjackets host-ed COC foe Bolivar, as well as OC opponents Camden-ton and Parkview. Each team played an opponent for 25 minutes in a round robin format.

“Our main focus for the night was getting some swing players (players that are both JV and var-sity) some time to see who would step up in a game situation and we wanted to make sure we stayed healthy,” Lebanon head coach Matt Jernigan said.

Lebanon fell in the fi rst match to the Camdenton Lakers 1-0 on a goal scored on a missed clearance.

“We felt like we played well especially sitting four of our normal varsity start-ers,” Jernigan said.

In the second match, LHS fell to Bolivar, 2-1. The

Liberators graduated just two seniors from a squad that were 15-7 last season.

“Bolivar is year in and year out, a very good team ... so we knew we would have our hands full,” Jerni-gan said. “The game was pretty even in possession and I thought our team did a good job trying to control the tempo of the game.”

Lebanon’s goal was scored by Kalen Shoe-maker with an assist by Cody Cates.

Lebanon fell to Parkview, 1-0, in the nightcap.

“We really focused this game on getting some guys who would not normally start a chance to show what they had and we had one senior that really stepped up,” Jernigan said.

Jernigan said he was impressed with the play of senior Dustin Todd, a forward who just recently came out for soccer this season.

“He is really earning a spot,” Jernigan said. “He is fast and his touch is im-proving everyday. I’m ex-cited to how much he will improve over the year.”
