Communication Arts/EYC Scholarship Notice

At the district level, each first place teen participant in each category may receive a scholarship for registration to EYC. Information for this scholarship has been sent to the district Communication Arts Coordinator.

The award is to the individual 4-H member, and therefore, it is not transferable. In the event, the home county has already paid for the EYC registration for the individual, the county can receive a refund for that registration amount or the county may choose to apply what they paid to another delegate from the county. The county cannot substitute another individual for the Communication Arts scholarship. (The scholarship was given to the individual member, not the county.)

All participants in District Communication Arts events will receive a participation gift of a t-shirt. This includes Cloverbuds, if your district allow them to participate in the recitation piece of the program. This is in large part thanks to the ND 4-H Foundation and their sponsorship of the Communication Arts program.

2015 National Extension Conference on Volunteerism - Save the Date

The 2015 National Extension on Conference on Volunteerism will be held May 4-7, 2015 in Portland, Maine.  This conference is for any Extension professional that works with volunteers or manages volunteer programs.  A call for proposals will come out later this year. I have attended this conference along with some of your fellow NDSU Extension colleagues, and it is an excellent smaller conference to present at and attend. I hope you will consider this as a professional development opportunity.

Helping Hands Day 2014

The goal of the 2014 North Dakota 4-H Helping Hands Day is to provide North Dakota 4-H’ers the opportunity to do service in their local area during the same time frame as other North Dakota 4-H’ers across the state. The northwest, southwest, northeast and southeast districts are encouraged to plan and promote multicounty service projects, focusing on the issue of hunger that will occur on one day that each district chooses between Monday, Sept. 1, and Saturday, Oct. 11, 2014.  Each district will create its own opportunities, projects and schedule on the day of its choosing. We hope each district has at least three separate projects focusing on the state theme, hunger, for participants to choose from in their

8

North Dakota 4-H - ShopTalk – June 2014

local area.  Districts have the opportunity to choose the date that fits best with their counties, select project opportunities that interest their youth and create opportunities that support local needs around the state project focus. Each district is asked to report information for each project site they host no later than October 31, 2014. Projects should be planned in conjunction with 4-H youth and adult volunteers. Districts may choose to separate into MPU planning groups. Projects may include activities that start before Sept. 1, however, we encourage at least part of the project activity to happen within the suggested time frame. The toolkit was sent to the county list serve and is designed to assist you with planning and executing a positive service event in your district. It includes information on service learning, the service learning cycle and 4-H service learning standards, the 2014 ND 4-H Helping Hands Day project focus, project ideas, additional resources and information on local and global hunger, and sample lesson plans for educating about hunger. If you need a copy of the tool kit, please let Katie know. Other resources available to local staff include the 4-H: Empowering Youth to End Hunger in Their Communities Tool Kit, available by contacting Katie Tyler.

In conjunction with this service opportunity, there are funds available for youth solving hunger issues through the 4-H and Invest an Acre program. Please contact Katie Tyler, 701-857-7682 if you have questions or would like to apply for a mini grant to help support a local service project focusing on hunger awareness, advocacy, and solutions. For more information and to start planning in your district, we encourage you to reach out to your Helping Hands Day 2014 district committee member:

A Call to 4-H Youth

4-H and Invest an Acre is an opportunity for youth in your community to apply for up to $1,000 to help solve hunger in your community. Grant funds can be used for a number of hunger related projects, and it is our hope that through this grant, 4-H’ers will:

Demonstrate how they will increase their learning and actions related to food security and hunger relief

Use recommended resources to educate others related to food security and hunger relief most appropriate to their community/area

Select a community project(s) that uses recommended resources, creates an awareness and educates others about food security and hunger relief in their communities

Use the toolkit provided to educate their community on hunger related issues Record and report their volunteer hours and the number of people they

reached

9

North Dakota 4-H - ShopTalk – June 2014

County Extension offices and youth receiving funding will be expected to learn about hunger in their local community as well as the impact of food insecurity globally.  A toolkit will be provided that includes programs and activities designed to complement the education needed.  Community projects selected will engage both youth and adults in brainstorming and then carry out meaningful service to the community. Suggestions of service ideas include, but are not limited to:  GIS mapping of areas in which food security is most prevalent and presenting it to the town/city council; creating or partnering with an existing community garden; or assisting the food bank with packing weekend backpacks for students. Youth and adults will be expected to collect data on how many youth and adults they reached and also the number of volunteer hours involved.  To apply, email Katie Tyler at [email protected].

Encourage your clubs to apply today!

STATE FAIR

Dean Aakre, 4-H Youth Development [email protected]

State Fair Exhibit List and State Fair Notes

In response to questions about the state fair exhibit list, here are some notes:Page 5 Livestock health requirements and page 13 Swine – certificates are required for swine moved and exhibited in the state. Please refer to the information provided this spring by Dr. Newman and also from the State Board of Animal Health. The open class exhibit list does list the current requirements.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle can be found in Class 29 Environment, Lot 2900.

13

North Dakota 4-H - ShopTalk – June 2014

Educational exhibits class has been eliminated. Those exhibits can be entered in the general lots at the beginning of most project areas.

Classes 44, 45, and 46 were re-arranged, however, I neglected to change the lot numbers accordingly. Please just use the lot numbers as they are printed.

In general, members may enter two exhibits per class. However, there are some exceptions and they are listed in the class guidelines. Class 91 Clothing should have had a statement allowing additional exhibits – so members may enter more exhibits, but not more than two per lot.

Lot numbers are not listed for communication arts or project expo and clothing revue because those are entered by the county based on your county events.

We are seeking staff to volunteer for shows and events at the state fair. If you would like to judge or help with a show, please contact Katie or Dean.
