Dr. Jeff WILLIAMSDirector of Athletics

Dr. Jeff Williams became the East Central University Director of Athletics January 1, 2013. His appointment follows over 15 years of service to ECU, most recently as the chair of the ECU Department of Kinesiology.

Dr. Williams was hired by ECU in 1999 as the Tigers Head Athletic Trainer. By 2003, he had built and developed the staff, students and curriculum into ECU’s first nationally accredited Athletic Training Education Program (ATEP). In 2007, he was named Chair of the Kinesiology Department, where he was responsible for overseeing all four undergraduate degree programs, along with coordinating the Master of Secondary Education degree program in Sports Administration.

Williams emerged as a leader within athletic administration while guiding this graduate program, which provided a platform for sharing his years of athletic experience with the next generation of athletic administrators. All academic programs demonstrated growth in scope and size under his leadership, but the most prolific growth was experienced in Sports Administration, which had become one of ECU’s largest graduate program by 2009.

Prior to this administrative appointment, Williams held a tenured associate professor position at ECU. He has also served in other leadership capacities, including university committees and faculty senate president. He received his doctorate of philosophy in higher education administration from the University of Oklahoma in 2011, master of human relations in student development from OU in 1999 and a bachelor of science in health and sports sciences from OU in 1996. He attended ECU from 1991-1993 prior to joining the Oklahoma Sooners as an athletic training student in 1993.

Prior to coming “home” to ECU, Dr. Williams’ other professional credits include clinical instructor and supervisor of the athletic training program at Rose State College (1997-1999), Midwest Regional Medical Center Sports Medicine Program Coordinator (1997-1999) and Physical Performance Center Staff Certified Athletic Trainer in Norman (1996-1997).

Over the span of his 17 year career, Williams has worked closely with athletic programs across all levels of competition, from youth to professional sports. However, it is within the NCAA DII level that Williams is committed. As a scholar, Williams researched the NCAA DII environment, seeking out the best practices.

“I believe in the NCAA Division II philosophy of equally balancing athletics and academics. Our ultimate goal at ECU is for our Tigers to earn their degree while having a great experience as a student-athlete. I am happy to lead a program full of coaches and staff who embrace this approach at a university that appreciates such efforts,” reveals Williams. “President Hargrave and I have one primary goal - to move Tiger Athletics forward by creating the best experiences possible for our student-athletes, our campus community and the Ada community. The Tigers WILL compete for GAC and NCAA championships!”

Both Williams and his wife Shelly (Jeter) graduated from Latta High School. Shelly also attended ECU prior to graduating from the University of Oklahoma and later the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. She is a speech language pathologist for Latta schools. They have two sons – Jace, 15 and Kale, 11; and a daughter Katelynn, 9.

“Tiger Athletics has a rich tradition of great teams. Our past successes are indeed historic and we are ready to see history repeat itself. We believe in our student-athletes today. We believe in our coaches today. We believe in our fans, alumni and supporters today. This is not a place you can experience once and move on. This is a place where once you become a Tiger, you’re always a Tiger!”

KERR ACTIVITIES CENTER: HOME OF THE TIGERSECU’s Robert S. Kerr Activities Center is one of the top basketball facilities in the region.

Built in 1974, the golden geodesic dome has been a landmark for ECU. The 50,000 square-foot structure will comfortably seat over 2,700 people. The three-level center, built on a hillside, also houses classrooms, coaches’ offices and reception areas.

In addition to serving as the home for the ECU men’s and women’s basketball teams and volleyball team, Kerr Activities Center is also used for graduation ceremonies, special community events, concerts, high school basketball tournaments and intramurals.

The lobby of the Kerr Activities Center recently received a facelift, with the addition of the History of East Central University men’s basketball wall.

The display takes a chronological look at the success of ECU men’s basketball from 1927 to the present. Featured are team photos of conference champions and national qualifying teams, along with past All-Americans and all-conference selections.

The wall was designed by Taylor 3D. Those making donations toward the display were: Ryan Eaves, Phil Johnson, Jim Kemp, Chuck Liston, Tommy Quaid, Terry Ringenberg, Terry Shannon, Gerald Williamson and Jim Wooldridge.

2014-15 ECU ATHLETIC TRAINERS

ECU ATHLETIC TRAINING EDUCATION PROGRAM The East Central University Athletic Training Education Program has been a key to the Tigers success over the years. The program serves to not only help the ATEP students learn in a hands-on environment, but it allows the ECU Athletic Department to provide athletic health care for its student-athletes.

The main athletic training clinic is located on the bottom floor of the Kerr Activities Center (KAC) in room 122. The main athletic training clinic is staffed by nationally certified and state licensed athletic trainers, each of whom is assigned to various athletic teams.

The athletic trainers work in conjunction with team physicians to provide comprehensive athletic health care, ranging from emergency first aid and injury evaluation to rehabilitation of athletic injuries.

There are also athletic training facilities located in the Elvan George Locker Room for football and in the Women’s Athletic Complex for soccer and softball.

Thorn, the only head coach in the ECU volleyball program’s history, heads into his seventh season after guiding the Tigers to a record of 66-130 in the first six seasons.

ECU went 12-19 in 2013 and tied for fourth in the Great American Conference, with an 8-6 record. The Tigers advanced to the semifinals of the GAC Championship and saw two players earn All-GAC honors. Senior Danielle Essix was named to the All-GAC Second Team, while senior Ashley Williams was named to the All-GAC Honorable Mention team in her first season at ECU.

In 2012, ECU went 10-23, with a 7-7 GAC finish. Senior Tatiana Booth led the team throughout the season and earned All-GAC First Team honors for her efforts.

In 2011, the Tigers posted a 14-18 overall record and an 8-8 mark in the first season of the GAC. The campaign was the best in school history as ECU reached the semifinals of the GAC Championship before falling to eventual champion Arkansas Tech.

Thorn’s coaching efforts led to three of his players earning all-conference accolades that season as setter Shayla May and outside hitter Noelle Cope were second team selections while Booth was an honorable mention pick.

In the program’s first season, 2008, Thorn coached the Lone Star Conference Newcomer of the Year and All-LSC First Team honoree in setter Holly Hicks. In 2009, Hicks picked up first team all-conference accolades again, while teammates Emily Holombek and Jacqueline Sparks were honorable mention selections.

In 2010, libero Megan Kimak was picked for the All-LSC Second Team.

Thorn’s overall coaching mark is 161-266.

His teams have also achieved academic success. In the first four seasons, his teams had a combined 3.3 grade-point average or better and two received the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award.

Prior to his arrival at ECU, Thorn was the head volleyball coach at Texas-Pan American from 1998-2006. In his nine seasons with the UTPA program, he guided the Broncs to a school-best 112 victories, including the best four-year run in school history (15 or more wins in each of those seasons).

He posted two 19-win seasons in 2000 and 2003 and was voted independent coach of the year by all Division I independent coaches in 2000.

His teams were ranked 16th in the nation in digs per game with 19.14 in 2004 and he coached a player who was ranked in the top 10 in Division I in digs per game during the 2003 and 2004 seasons. Also, 24 of his players were named to the all-independent team from 2000-2006.

Thorn’s leadership qualities carried over to an emphasis on the classroom as every athlete he recruited, who completed their eligibility, graduated or was on track to graduate. His teams had a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher for the last seven years at UTPA and 67 of his student-athletes earned a 3.0 GPA or higher.

Also at UTPA, 33 of his student-athletes earned a spot on the Dean’s List, while 22 players were selected to the athletic director’s honor roll. Thirteen student-athletes were United States Achievement Academy All-American Scholars and 10 volleyball players made the Academic All-Independent Team for the last six years there.

Prior to taking the head coaching position at UTPA, Thorn served as an assistant for two seasons (1996 and 1997), in which the team posted 19 wins one of those years. That team qualified for the Sun Belt Conference Tournament for the first time in school history in 1996.

Thorn was assistant volleyball coach at Whitworth College (Wash.), for one season and was the head coach at Riverside High School near Spokane for two seasons. He led the team to the postseason both years in 1993 and 1994. That 1993 campaign was the first time Riverside had ever advanced to the postseason.

He received his master’s degree in kinesiology from UTPA in 1998 and received his B.A. from Whitman College (Wash.), in 1992. He is a 1988 graduate of Mead High School in Spokane, where he participated in basketball and track.

Thorn’s wife is Beatriz and they have an 11-year-old daughter, Sara.

Essix begins her first season as a graduate assistant coach after a four-year playing career on the ECU squad. She also takes over the GA position from her older sister Yakira.

As an outside hitter, Essix had a standout career with the Tigers. She finished her career ranked in the top-10 of 11 statistical categories, including seven spots in the top-5. Essix ranks second in points (1122.5), third in matches played (123), second in attacks (3,062), second in kills (961) and second in digs (989).

In her senior season she led ECU with 275 kills and 340 digs and was named to the All-GAC Second Team.

Before joining the Tigers, Essix was a TWSA All-State selection and was named district MVP at Commerce High School.

Essix earned a bachelor’s degree in athletic training from ECU in May 2014 and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in sports administration.

2014 TIGER VOLLEYBALL 13

Losing seven seniors, returning just one starter, having two returners with significant playing time and adding six newcomers may sound like a rebuilding year, but the East Central University volleyball team is excited for the season. That excitement is due to the depth that team has in every position on the floor.

“This year we have a lot talent in the gym,” said head coach Dave Thorn. “We have a lot of depth and I am excited to not only see what we can do now, but where we will be at the end of the year.”

The Tigers had their best finish in conference play in 2013, with an 8-6 record and then lost five starters and their libero. However, after a few days of camp the returners who saw limited action and the new additions are all coming together well and coach Thorn is hopeful for a strong season.

“With no seniors I am counting on our juniors to step up and lead this team,” Thorn added. “But I expected to see everyone improve daily and make this one of the best seasons that we have had at ECU.”

Middle BlockersECU’s lone returning starter is junior Hayley Gerken, who led the team offensively with 267 kills and a .222 hitting percentage in 2013. This season she will be challenged for playing time by sophomore Jessica Sullivan and freshmen Mackenzie Davis and Madeline Mayer.

“This is a deep position for us,” commented Thorn. “Not only do we have Hayley Gerken, who has been a key player for us for the last two seasons, but we also have Jessica Sullivan who has made great strides over the spring and summer. Plus we have a couple of freshmen that are already working hard in practice.”

Outside Hitters/Right SideThe hitters on the outsides make up close to half of the 2014 roster, with four returners and two newcomers. Of the four returners only junior Sarah Simpson has seen any significant playing time. Simpson tallied 65 kills, 71 digs and 10 block assists in 24 matches last season.

Sophomore Bria Gambrell saw time in just six matches in 2013, but along with redshirt freshmen Kaci Harrison and Chelsea Stevens got valuable experience in the ECU system during practice a year ago. They will all be challenged by newcomers Madyson Gill and Alex Campbell for a spot in the rotation.

“We will be expecting a lot from Sarah Simpson,” said Thorn. “But I expect the rest of the group at this position to be able to step up and help us out as well.”

LiberoThe defensive specialist position will be a key for the Tigers with two new players fighting for the starting role. Redshirt freshman Dahyana Essix trained for the role last year, but true freshman Lily Porsa will challenge her for the role this year.

“This is one of the most overlooked, but important positions on the floor and I am really excited for it this season,” stated Thorn. “It is our youngest position, with a redshirt freshman and a freshman, but talent level is one of the best I have ever had on a team in the position.”

SetterThe player who runs the floor is the second area where ECU has experience returning in junior Madison Seiler. Seiler was one of two setters in a 6-2 system last year and is expected to start in 2014. However, she will be challenged by freshman Taylor Turner, one of the top recruited setters in the State of Oklahoma for 2014.

“We have two setters this season,” Thorn added. “Madison Seiler got some great experience in the past few seasons before getting hurt last season, but she has made great strides and worked hard on her leadership role on the floor. Taylor Turner will also be a good option for us since she is taller and we could use that in the front row.”

Whoever earns a starting role will be put to the test immediately at the Rockhurst Tournament. The Tigers will face strong competition from teams from the MIAA and GLVC, two of the top volleyball conferences in the nation.

ECU will continue to prepare for the challenging GAC schedule when they host the second-annual South Central Classic, Sept. 12-13 at the Kerr Activities Center. The tournament is again being co-hosted with Southeastern Oklahoma State and will feature teams from several states across the region.

“This tournament is a great way for us to showcase volleyball talent from across the region and from the surrounding states,” added Thorn. “This gives our fans an opportunity to see us play some quality competition right out of the gate.”
