NCAA DIVISION III

In 2013, Covenant became full members of the NCAA Division III following a four year transitional period from 2009-2013.

The largest division, in terms of number of schools and number of participants, is Division III comprised by more than 170,000 student-athletes at 444 mostly smaller institutions.

Academics are the primary focus for Division III student-athletes. The division minimizes

the conflicts between athletics and academics and keeps student-athletes on a path to graduation through shorter practice and playing seasons, the number of contests, no redshirting and regional competition that reduces time away from academic studies. Student-athletes are integrated on campus and treated like all other members of the general student-body, keeping them focused on being a student first.

The college experience is a time of learning and growth — a chance to follow passions and develop potential. For student-athletes in Division III, all of this happens most importantly in the classroom and through earning an academic degree. The Division III experience provides for passionate participation in a competitive athletic environment, in which student-athletes push themselves to excellence and build upon their academic success with new challenges and life skills. And student-athletes are encouraged to pursue their full passions and find their potential through a comprehensive educational experience.

The Three D’s:

DiscoverDivision III student-athletes are encouraged to pursue their interests and passions beyond the classroom and field of play…to discover themselves.

DevelopDivision III institutions provide an environment that encourages student-athletes to develop into well-rounded adults. Small class sizes, the ability to participate in more than one sport, and an emphasis on participating activities outside of the classroom are all hallmarks of the Division III experience.

DedicateDivision III institutions expect student-athletes to dedicate themselves to achieving their potential. Student-athletes must manage their busy schedules, keep up with class work and face the same challenges as the rest of the student-body.

All told, the USA South has 13 full-fledged members along with one associate member in football.

In volleyball and women’s basketball, the conference is split into two divisions (North and South). Covenant plays in the South division in those sports with Huntingdon, LaGrange, Maryville and Piedmont.

SCOTLAND YARDHOME OF THE SCOTS

Built in 1989, Scotland Yard is home to both the men’s and women’s soccer programs at Covenant. The field, located in the southern part of the campus just past Ashe Activity Center, is of maximum regulation dimensions (118 yards by 70 yards). Scotland Yard boasts cement bleachers, along with two newer sets of metal stands, and a retaining wall which provides additionalfan seating.

Across from the north-side bleachers, are the team and press areas on the south side of the field. Both teams sit in covered bench areas. During the summer of 2008, the field was completely overhauled by installing a drainage system and sprinkler system. Also a crowning of the field was performed and a sand base was put in place for better drainage. Lights were installed for the first time before the 2010 season.

The inaugural match held at Scotland Yard pitted Covenant against Indiana University-Pur-due University at Indianapolis (IUPUI) on September 2, 1989. The Scots came out with a 1-0 victory over the Metros on that day and would finish the opening season at Scotland Yard with a 7-1-1 home record.

The field has seen some historical matches as well. Former men’s soccer head coach Brian Crossman, a future NAIA hall of famer, registered his 300th career victory at Scotland Yard during the 2004 season. Current women’s soccer head coach Mark Duble recorded his 200th coaching win in 2012 at the Yard. Scotland Yard has played host to numerous conference tournament and regional tournament matches in its 24 years of existence.

Mark Duble Head CoachMark Duble will enter into his 21st season as the Lady

Scots’ head soccer coach in the 2014 season.

He began coaching the Lady Scots club team in 1993

before the program became varsity in 1994. He “grew

up” at Covenant, as his father was a Vice President for

Advancement at Covenant College in the 1960’s and 1970’s,

and he played for, and captained, the Scots soccer team as

a player.

In 20 seasons with the Lady Scots his squads have

compiled a 215-129-28 record. The 2006 team won the

NAIA regional to advance to the NAIA national tournament

for the first time in school history. Duble has earned the

Conference Coach of the Year award six times, and the

Regional Coach of the Year award in 2004-05.

All told, during Duble’s tenure as head coach, the program

has produced nine all-americans, two national tournament

appearances (one in the NAIA and one in the NCCAA),

nine conference regular season championships, and four

conference tournament titles. His 2010 squad placed

fourth at the NCCAA national tournament.

In addition to the tremendous on-field success, 40 players

have earned national scholar-athlete awards from either

the NAIA or the NCCAA.

In 2012, the Lady Scots posted a 15-5-1 record and 9-1 in

GSAC play which earned them a share of the conference

regular season title, a first at the NCAA Division III level.

The 15 wins was tied for the second most in school history.

Covenant placed seven players on the All-Conference team

and had one NCCAA All-American (Kathryn Allison).

In 2013, the program’s first year as full members of the USA

South Athletic Conference and NCAA Division III, Duble’s

squad battled through injuries to compile a 10-9-2 overall

and a 7-3-2 mark in conference play. The Lady Scots advanced to the semifinals of the USA South Tournament

before falling to eventual champion Piedmont.

Healthy Lady Scots Ready for 2014 Season

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Boasting 18 returning players, including eight starters, the Covenant women’s soccer team

is ready for the 2014 season. Under longtime head coach Mark Duble, the Lady Scots look to have another solid

season and make a run in the USA South tournament.

Last season, Covenant was plagued by injuries but still managed to post a successful campaign. The Lady Scots

finished sixth in the USA South during the regular season with a 9-8-2 overall record, including 7-3-2 in league

play. In the first round of the conference tournament, Covenant pulled off an upset of third-seed, and defending

champion, Averett before falling to Piedmont in the semifinal round.

This season, Covenant has been picked to finish sixth by the USA South’s coaches in the league’s preseason poll.

“We are returning four freshmen defenders from last year, so we will still be good back there and more

experienced,” said Duble who will enter his 21st season as the only head coach in program history. “We’ll be a

dangerous team once again this season.”

The key to the success of the team last year was its ability to win close matches and play defense. Covenant won

six matches by one goal and five by 1-0 scores. Defensively, the Lady Scots were stout as they allowed 24 goals and

posted nine shutouts. Within a stretch of four straight shutouts, the team did not allow an opponent to score for

432 game minutes.

All-USA South performer sophomore Andrea Hunt, along with fellow sophomores Natalie Smith, Kaitlyn Winking

and Rachel Setzer make up the strong backfield for the Lady Scots. Senior goalkeeper Lucy Johnson will be

counted on at the net after allowing 14 goals in 16 matches last season. Johnson compiled a .829 save percentage

with a career-high 68 saves a season ago.

“She runs the show from the back,” noted Duble about his senior keeper. “She played great last year and we look

forward to her continuing that strong play this season.”

Offensively, senior Bethany Logan was the biggest scoring threat a year ago. Logan had a breakout season with a

career-high 11 goals, including five game-winners, and was named to the USA South All-Conference third team.

Three of her game-winning scores came in 1-0 contests.

“Goose (Logan) is just a goal scorer, especially in big spots,” said Duble. “She has a great ability in finding the back

of the net. She plays hard when she is on the field.”

Duble also hopes to have a few of his injured players from a year ago healthy for at least a portion of this season.

Sophomore Gabby Powell and junior Anne Charlotte Strawbridge are returning from injuries that hampered them

last year. Junior Jessica Rowe is also healthy and could provide another scoring threat for the Lady Scots. USA

South All-Conference third teamer Ruth Terry is currently recovering from an injury and hopes to be able to play in

the next few weeks.

Other key returners include juniors Jenna Vreeland, Rachel Bernard, Mary Claire Roberson, Annie Sostok and Bekah

Kanoff, along with sophomores Anna Porch, Sophia Gianis and Katherine Keller.

Duble’s recruiting class netted four freshmen this season. The newcomers include Christy Barton (Franklin, N.C.),

Rebekah Gravitt (Sharpsburg, Ga.), Landry Jenkins (Nolensville, Tenn.) and Kayla Bailey (Locust Grove, Ga.).

“Christy Barton is a very dangerous player on the outside,” remarked Duble. “She is fast, strong, tall and comes from

a great high school program. Rebekah Gravitt is similar to Bethany Logan in how she can score. Landry Jenkins is a

very effective outside back and has played against tough competition with her club team in Nashville. Kayla Bailey

is a strong, smart defender.”

Duble has put together another tough non-conference schedule which begins on Friday at Rhodes and a contest

with UT-Dallas on Saturday in Memphis. The Lady Scots will also play Emory and Birmingham Southern in non-

league action.

“My idea is to play as tough a schedule as possible, so the team is ready for October,” said Duble. “I am excited

about our non-conference schedule.”

Inside the USA South, Covenant will travel to four of the top five teams in the preseason poll while hosting Averett,

who was picked to finish fifth in the conference.

“I think we can compete with anybody in the conference and that is where you want to be,” added Duble. “Any

given day, the top five or six teams can beat anybody in this league.”

40 WOMEN’S SOCCER MEDIA GUIDE 2014 COVENANT COLLEGE

Coming into the first year of full Division III member-ship and the USA South Athletic Conference, the Cov-enant women’s soccer team was expected to compete in the top half of the conference.

The Lady Scots accomplished that, but in a much dif-ferent way than some might have expected.

Covenant finished 10-9-2 overall and 7-3-2 in the USA South, good for sixth in the final conference standings, and made a run into the USA South semifinals before being ousted by eventual champion Piedmont.

A season after graduating 10 seniors, head coach Mark Duble put forth a lineup that consisted of multiple fresh-men for most of the year. The young players rose to the occasion, especially in the backfield, as the Lady Scots finished the regular season winning four of six contests.

The defense was the key reason why the Lady Scots had a strong finish. From the final minutes of a match against Maryville on Oct. 2 until the first few minutes of a contest at Averett on Oct. 25, Covenant did not allow a score for 432 consecutive minutes of game play, span-ning six matches. During that stretch, Covenant won three matches by 1-0 scores.

1-0 scores were a normal occurrence in 2013 as the Lady Scots won five matches by that score. Additionally, Covenant won six matches decided by one goal and three contests in overtime.

After a loss to Averett on Oct. 25, the Lady Scots rout-ed William Peace on the road 5-0 behind a hat trick from Bethany Logan and the first two collegiate scores from Ally Jennings. Covenant wrapped up the regular season with a 1-1 draw on Senior Night against Piedmont.

Entering the USA South tournament with the sixth seed, the Lady Scots had to travel back to Danville, Va., to face Averett once again. An early goal by Logan gave Covenant a 1-0 lead and that was all the Lady Scots needed to upset the defending conference champions.

“That was tooth and nail defending by 11 players,” said Duble of the win at Averett. “Second half we were under relentless pressure. They are certainly a very dan-gerous team. We were forunate to win, but very happy to do so.”

After just a couple days off, the team headed back to Virginia, this time Martinsville, for the USA South semi-final round. The Lady Scots ran into a tough Piedmont squad once again and the Lions eliminated Covenant

3-1. Piedmont would go on and capture the USA South title a day later.

Having to battle injuries to key players throughout the year, Duble and his team persevered with a strong team effort. Keeper Hannah Bales had strong junior season as she allowed just 10 goals in over 866 minutes at the net (1.04 goals against average). Fellow keeper Lucy Johnson also performed well as she started 10 matches and had a 1.17 goals against average in 1074 minutes.

Logan had a breakout year with 11 goals to lead the team and finish seventh in the conference. Rachel Ber-nard, Anne Charlotte Strawbridge, and Ruth Terry all had three goals apiece while Terry led the squad with four assists.

Defensively, freshmen Andrea Hunt, Kaitlyn Winking, Rachel Setzer, and Natalie Smith all performed well in their first years. Together, the group started the final six matches of the year and allowed just six goals total in those contests.

On Senior Night, Covenant said farewell to seniors Mary Buys, Beth Wilkening as well as transferring junior Ally Jennings.

Parents/Boosters/Alumni/FansAre you a Booster?

A booster is an individual that:

• Promotes Covenant athletics program.• Makes a financial contribution to Covenant athletics or its booster organizations.• Assists in the recruitment of prospects for Covenant.• Provides benefits (e.g., jobs, occasional meals) to enrolled student-athletes.Once a booster.....Always a booster. It is important to remember that once an individual has been identified as a booster, he or she retains that status forever.

If you have questions whether you are considered a booster of Covenant Athletics or if you have questions about what you may or may not do as a booster, please feel free to contact the Compliance Office at [email protected].

What is an extra benefit?

Fans and boosters may not provide anything to prospects or currently enrolled student-athletes (or their families) without prior approval from the Compliance Office. If a student-athlete and/or his or her family accepts any benefits of special consideration (e.g., transportation, clothing, money, meals, etc.) based on his or her athletic skill, the student-athlete will lose his or her eligibility and Covenant will be subject to NCAA penalties.

Extra benefits can include, but, are not limited to:

• Money, gifts, clothing, tickets for entertainment, haircut, and use of a car.• Free or reduced-cost room or board anywhere.• Free or reduced-cost merchandise or services.• Use of Athletics Department copy/fax machines, long distance telephone services or free use of a cell phone.• Typing or editing reports, papers, letters, etc. for a student-athlete.• A loan of money or the consigning of a note to arrange a loan.• The sale or trade of complimentary admissions for merchandise, services or debt repayment.• The sale or trade of ANY items a student-athlete has received for his or her participation in athletics (e.g., gear, clothing, awards). This list is not exhaustive. Please refrain from offering prospects and/or current student-athletes and their families and friends anything that is not available to all students or the general public.

Any questions or concerns should be directed to:
