Ornbau: 91737 Ornbau is ca. 17 km / 11 miles south of Ansbach.

Saturday, 29 November: in the Altstadt = historic town center. This proud little town is a favourite with visitors to Franconia, as it still has an intact wall with moat surrounding the Altstadt, and a truly historical center with lovely old buildings and two city gates.

If you visit, do walk along the Stadtmauer (wall) and exit it at the open wooden doors - into a tiny paradise. A local artist has installed a "Bicycle Rapunzel" (true!) and a couple of other artefacts. Cross the bridge over the moat and turn left where the moat ends, and you'll be walking along a path lined with rose bushes and other plants. The path takes you past some goats who keep the grass in the moat short, and around to the south side of the city wall where you'll be passing between the river and lovely allotments that line the outside of the wall. You can then re-enter Ornbau via the southern gate. Don't worry, Ornbau is not very big so it's only a short walk. Note: Please park your car along Weidenbacher Straße as there are hardly any parking spaces in the Vorstadt or the Altstadt. From this car park, it's only about 500 yards to the Altstadt.

Grand Opening on Friday, 28 November, at 5 p.m. on Marktplatz; Opening hours: Sunday - Thursday 11 a.m. - 7 p.m. | Friday and Saturday 11 a.m. - 8 p.m. Every year Rothenburg is transformed from a summer's dream into a winter wonderland. Experience the enchanting atmosphere at the Christmas Market, the so-called "Reiterlesmarkt". This Market dates back to the 15th century and is therefore one of the oldest in Germany. Its name refers to an old Teutonic legend: In pre-Christian time, the Teutons believed in a rider who would take care of a deceased person’s soul. While the Teutons were afraid of this mystic figure, people in the middle ages changed their attitude towards this rider, eagerly expecting him to appear because - according to the legend - he changed from a wild, rude man to a friendly messenger who brings gifts to all men on earth. A painting of this famous rider can be seen on the facade of the city hall. But on several occasions, he “becomes alive” again. For example, when the market is opened or when the children of the town go on their candlelight procession. The Reiterlesmarkt (in English) is always held from last Friday in November to the day before Christmas Eve.
