Our Church Our church was organized in 1875. Through the years God has truly
blessed this church. We have come from bushes to bricks and a handful
of members to hundreds. To better accommodate our members, we have
Contemporary Worship Service, Traditional Morning Worship Service,
Teens/Children’s Church, Bible Study, Prayer Service, and Church
School. In order to Minister to the Masses, our disciples have organized
over thirty-seven ministries to uplift God’s Kingdom work. Our Sunday
worship services reach far beyond these four walls. We now reach across
the county and state through radio land. Our heritage is truly rich; we
have received a legacy that causes us to beam with pride. Chesterfield
Missionary Baptist Church was born out of faith, purpose, and true
dedication to the will of God. The history of our church is unending and
is continually being researched. Our history was obtained from our
church records and from the recollection of our seniors’ memories.
Our Mission We are a Bible believing church
and we follow the principles set forth by God.
Our mission is to lift up the Savior,
witness to the lost,
perfect the saints,
support the community,
and secure spiritual liberty for humanity,
therefore, developing disciples for Christ.
“ So built we the wall; and all the wall was joined together unto the half thereof: for the
people has a mind to work.” Nehemiah 4:6
“Even as the Son of man came not to be
ministered unto, but to minister, and give his life a ransom for many.”
Matthew 20:28
Our Pastor Reverend James Renard Matthews was born July 16, 1963 to Reverend Amos Matthews, Jr. and
Mrs. Thelma Smith Matthews in Lane, South Carolina and is the youngest of seven children. He
graduated from C. E. Murray High School in Greeleyville, South Carolina and Columbia Junior
College in Columbia, South Carolina. He attended Gupton-Jones Mortuary School of Science in
College Park, Georgia and Morris College School of Religion, Sumter, South Carolina. Pastor
Matthews graduated from Mt. Olive College, Mount Olive, North Carolina with a B.A. degree in
Church Ministries. He is presently attending Erskine Theological Seminary (Columbia Campus)
pursuing a Master of Divinity Degree.
Pastor Matthews’ career includes serving in the United States Army and he also served
as a South Carolina State Trooper. He was employed with the Horry County Commission on Alcohol
and Drug Abuse in Conway, South Carolina as a Prevention Specialist. He is currently employed with
the Columbus County DREAM Center, Inc. of Whiteville, North Carolina as a Health Educator.
In 1994, Pastor Matthews founded the Boys 2 Men Community Club ( ages 8-20) in Brunswick
County (Pleasant View Missionary Baptist Church), Sunset Beach, North Carolina. He is also the
founder of AMEN (Association of Ministers Empowering Neighborhoods) that was organized in 2003
in Columbus County.
Pastor Matthews accepted his call into the ministry and was licensed to preach the
gospel on July 3, 1994 while a disciple of his home church, St. Asia Baptist Church, Greeleyville,
South Carolina. He later became a disciple of Pleasant View Missionary Baptist Church, Sunset
Beach, North Carolina and was ordained on June 18, 1995. He began his pastorate in 1995 at New
Bethel Baptist Church (Sandy Island), Pawley’s Island, South Carolina where he remained until 1997.
He also began his pastorate at Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church, Chadbourn, North Carolina
in November of 1995 where he served as a faithful and dutiful called leader of God’s Disciples until
July 2004. Pastor Matthews is currently the pastor of Chesterfield Missionary Baptist Church, Longs,
South Carolina.
He married the lovely Vicki Jenrette and they reside in Sunset Beach, North Carolina. They are
the parents of three children: Tony Gantt of Columbia, South Carolina, Journee Rebekah, and Joshua
Reid (J.R.), all of whom are the joy of their lives.
Reverend Wallace Evans Jr., is a native of North Myrtle Beach, SC. He is married to the former Valeria Colbert and they have four children. Reverend Evans has co-owned a successful business within the community where he mentored many young men and fathers in the community. He graduated from North Myrtle Beach High School in 1989 with an honors diploma. Reverend Evans attended Clemson University on an academic scholarship and transferred to Coastal Carolina University where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Interdisciplinary Studies. Reverend Evans is currently the Executive Director of A Father’s Place, Horry County’s father engagement initiative. He joined the Board of Directors of A Father’s Place in 1999 and was a member of the grant writing committee that secured funding for the initiative. When the program was funded in 2000, Reverend Evans was hired as an Intervention Specialist and later was promoted to Executive Director in September 2004. He continues to participate in trainings to certify him to equip fathers to meet the challenges of fatherhood. Since becoming the Executive Director, Reverend Evans has helped the initiative to flourish. He coordinated the first strategic planning session held in January 2005 and represented the SC Centers for Fathers and Families (SCCFF) at the Smart Marriages Conference in Dallas, TX also in 2005. He has served on the SCCFF social enterprise workgroup, which created the program/employment integration plan that was adopted in May 2006. Under his leadership the initiative has received several awards. They received the Pat-On-The Back Award from DHEC, Head Start Volunteer Award, and the Outstanding Service to Community Award from Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Reverend Evans also serves on the Horry County Community of Character board, the advisory board for Positive Voices (a youth serving organization) and is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Reverend Evans has accepted the call and challenge of fatherhood by constantly striving to overcome the many obstacles of being a non-custodial father and is a model of what the fatherhood initiative is accomplishing in Horry County. The realization that children need the nurturance and guidance of a father is the fuel for his desire to be the best father and help other men to be the best fathers that they can be! Reverend Evans as the Youth Pastor at Chesterfield Missionary Baptist Church has established a Waist-Deep Bible Study for the youth. This bible study is for children who want to deepen their relationship with Christ without being pressured to come out to fellowship. He is rebuilding our families and our community one youth at a time.
