ABOUT BLOOMSBURGBloomsburg University, a member of Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education, is a four-year coeducational public university founded in 1839. Through the stages of its development from a normal school to a teachers college to a multipurpose state college and finally to a university in 1983, the institution has retained its emphasis on liberal arts and career education.

Bloomsburg is recognized as one of the best 100 public universities in the United States, and excellence, ranging from its 18 national championships to its international reputation in a number of its academic programs, is an attitude found throughout the faculty and staff.

About 90 percent of Bloomsburg’s students come from throughout Pennsylvania, creating a diverse mix of cultures and ideas. It’s a place where friendships that last a lifetime begin. And it’s a busy place — with more than 200 student organizations and activities, NCAA Division II athletic programs and a popular recreation center.

The university’s Division of Continuing and Distance Education serves students through nondegree credit courses, noncredit minicourses, off-campus classes, credit for life experience and distance learning courses on public television.

The Town of Bloomsburg, located in the Susquehanna River Valley, has a population of about 12,000 people. The central business district is just three blocks southwest of campus, and includes more than 80 retail stores, restaurants, and the Bloomsburg Fair in September. More stores, restaurants and theaters can be found along nearby Route 11 and at the Columbia Mall, northwest of town.

The university is within a one-hour drive from such cities as Hazleton, Williamsport, Wilkes-Barre and Scranton; 1.5 hours from Harrisburg; 2.5 hours from Philadelphia; 3 hours from New York City and Baltimore; and four hours from Pittsburgh and Washington, DC.

2014 SEASON PREVIEW

By Scott Eddy, Assistant Sports Information Director

Last fall brought marked improvement for the Bloomsburg University women’s soccer team – the Huskies added three victories to their win total from the previous year, more than doubled their goals and shots on goal and finished the cam-paign with three straight wins. The hot finish to the year pro-pelled Bloomsburg into the top 10 of the final NCAA Division II Atlantic Region rankings of the regular season and has the team looking to take the next step in 2014.

Bloomsburg lost seven seniors from last year’s squad, includ-ing one of the school’s all-time leading scorers in Tara Huber, but returns a veteran roster with experience implementing the system of third-year head coach Stephanie Anderson.

“Eligibility-wise we only have four true seniors, but we have a lot more experience than our roster would suggest on paper,” Anderson said.

The Huskies finished the 2013 season at 9-9 overall, but that record doesn’t tell the entire story. Included in the season re-sults were several near-misses – most notably taking national-ly-ranked East Stroudsburg to overtime as well as watching a goal in the 71st minute against also nationally-ranked Califor-nia (PA) be the difference in that contest.

“You could see us building throughout the year. We played top tier teams within a goal or took them to overtime,” Anderson said. “Now it is breaking through that wall. Some of those games where we lost in overtime because we didn’t believe we should win them – we believe that we should win those games now.”

FORWARDS

The Huskies were much better at generating pressure a season ago, ranking third in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Confer-ence in shots on goal per game (8.11) which led to scoring 16 more goals than the previous year.

Bloomsburg aims to feature a multifaceted attack with scoring threats from around the field. The core of the attack returns this fall, led by all-region selection Jenna Fisher. Fisher enjoyed a tremendous debut in maroon and gold, ranking sixth in the PSAC in goals (9) and ninth in points (21) and was second among all freshmen in both categories.

Junior Ashley Sanchez tallied three goals and seven points last year and will add another scoring option for the Huskies.

Maureen Leis returned to the team last fall after missing 2012

due to injury and now is at full strength. A holding forward in the Huskies system, Leis could be one of the key figures in the attack this fall now at 100 percent for the first time since join-ing the program.

Freshman Michelle Kinka joins the team and could be an impact player this fall.

Anderson hopes the quartet of Fisher, Sanchez, Leis and Kinka will be enough to keep opponents on their heels.

“In the past we haven’t had enough threats on the field at once to take pressure off of anyone,” she said. “Between those four it will be tough for teams to shut down one player because they will have to worry about someone else who is just as danger-ous.”

Another source of leadership comes from senior Brooke Mohney, whose return came as a pleasant surprise to the

2014 SEASON PREVIEW

Huskies coaching staff after starting 17 of 18 games last year. She decided to use her final year of eligibility following the year and returns this fall. A former forward, she spent last season playing 90 minutes as a center back and gives the Huskies sev-eral options with her versatility.

Another freshman, Kate Rockhill could become an attacking forward this season and could also feature into the equation

as an outside back or defensive midfielder. Junior Julia Rios was off to an outstanding start last fall with two goals and five points in six games before suffering a broken leg. Still working her way back from injury, the Huskies hope to receive addition-al production from Rios as the season progresses.

MIDFIELD

Bloomsburg boasts veteran leadership in the midfield, return-ing nearly all of its rotation from last season.

Senior Sierra Fortunato has seen action in 42 games includ-

ing 25 starts during her time with the Huskies and Anderson hopes that veteran leadership will make her be an anchor in the middle.

Junior captain Stephanie Tuccio played in all 18 games last year with a pair of assists, bringing the ability to defend and become involved in the attack.

Sophomore Allie Camp played in all 18 matches with 11 starts a year ago and helps set the tone for the Huskies with a physical style of play. Redshirt sophomore Megan Carroll returned from a knee injury last fall after missing her freshman campaign. Now healthy, Carroll brings the ability to switch the point of attack and create scoring threats. Another player working her way back from past injury is Hailey Vonasek who played in nine matches last year.

Also returning is sophomore Olivia Falko, who had an assist in five games last year, and junior Shelby Koch. A converted goal-keeper, Koch played defensive mid in high school and could play a similar role this fall.

DEFENSE

Where Bloomsburg will feel much of the impact from last year’s departed senior class is on the back line where it lost nearly its entire unit from a year ago.

Junior captain Taylor Gerstenfield is a leader of the group. She started 10 games a season ago and has 20 total during her two seasons with the Huskies.

Junior Chrissy Hollan started 11 matches last year and has looked to improve her skill set over the summer while playing in the Women’s Premier Soccer League. Senior Nicole Upde-grove has impressed the coaching staff with her work ethic and will fight for time at outside back while redshirt junior Brooke Etter is in her second year with the team as a center back, bringing defensive skill to the back line.

Sophomore Shannon Cessna aims to battle back from injuries last fall while fellow sophomore Carrie Kupferschmidt has made great strides from her freshman campaign.

A pair of freshmen also could see minutes – California native Hannah Miller is a converted forward and played against many high-Division I players in the Elite Clubs National League. Ra-chel Yenney also played with some of the country’s top players in the ECNL and will compete for a starting spot.

GOALKEEPERS

Senior Danielle Fiorelli brings a veteran presence to the net, starting 17 matches with over 1,500 minutes in goal for the Huskies last year. Her 74 saves a year ago were sixth in the

Julia Rios

Page 10: 2014 BUHuskies Women's Soccer Media Guide

PSAC and she finished the year with a 1.31 GAA, now boasting nine shutouts for her career.

Fiorelli’s backup last year, sophomore Victoria Albert will miss the season due to injury. That opens an opportunity for freshman Megan Deak who will fight for playing time this fall.

“We have two very different goalkeepers who should hopefully push each other to expand their games,” Anderson added.

OVERALL

While the Huskies look to improve and reach the postseason in 2014, the task will be a tough one – the PSAC figures to again be one of the top conferences in the nation after sending six teams to the NCAA Tournament in 2013. Bloomsburg has high hopes of

joining that upper echelon, however.

“We’re in a position to do the things that are needed to get to that level and are closer than we’ve been in the past,” Anderson said.

“We’re going to push numbers into the attack and be tough for teams to deal with.”

The Huskies hope it all adds up to taking yet another step forward in 2014.

“These players are really starting to see what they’re capable of and how working together will help them achieve their goals,” Ander-son emphasized. “We will be figuring things out as we go, but I really believe this team can make it to the national tournament.”

Stephanie Anderson enters her third season at the helm of the Bloomsburg University women’s soccer program in 2014.

Anderson led the Huskies to a 9-9-0 record in 2013, a three-win improvement over the 2012 season while the Huskies also picked up three additional PSAC victories over the previous season. Bloomsburg finished the season by winning its final three matches to jump into the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region Top 10 rankings.

Under Anderson, the Huskies greatly improved their offense in 2013 by scoring nearly 1.0 goals per game more than in 2012. The Huskies also had three players receive All-PSAC honors as forwards Tara Huber and Jenna Fisher along with senior defender Kelsey Holtz all picked up all-conference honors. Both Huber and Fisher also earned All-Atlantic Region accolades from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), marking the first time since 2010 that multiple Bloomsburg players picked up All-Region honors. Huber received a spot on the Daktronics All-Region team as well.

Anderson’s teams have received the NSCAA Team Academic Award for the past two seasons with the Huskies earning a cumula-tive team GPA of 3.36 in 2012-13.

Anderson came to Bloomsburg after serving as the assistant coach at Bucknell University in 2011. She previously served as a gradu-ate assistant at Drury University in Missouri and as an assistant at her alma mater, Nebraska Wesleyan University.

Stedman served as a midfielder and defender as a player and was a Scholar-Athlete during her career. She tallied three goals, three assists and nine career points.

She graduated cum lauder with a Bachelor’s degree in History and is currently working on a Master’s degree in Counseling.

2012: Posted five saves for the Huskies against East Stroudsburg (10/27).

From the Coach: A converted goalkeeper, Koch’s foot skills are tremendous and she is really good playing in tight spaces. We have to see if we can translate that to a big field. When you’ve been a goalkeeper sometimes the field seems three times as big as it really is. She scored for us in the spring. We’re probably looking at her to be a defensive center-mid because she has the ability to read the play in front of her and is good at holding some space and playing quickly in the other direction.

Tallied 53 goals during varsity career and finished high school career as second-leading scorer in school history. Was named the team offensive most valuable player the past two seasons and was also named to the All-Main Line first team in 2012 and 2013 as well as was an All-Chester County first team pick in 2012.

From the Coach: Kinka reminds me of Jenna Fisher. She’s fast and is very vocal. She broke all the records at her high school for goals. In the past we haven’t had enough threats on the field at once to take the pressure off of anyone and she is one of the players we will be looking to to change that this fall.
